Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Monmouth Poll: Trump Approval Rises; Approval of Tax Cut Soars; Democrat Advantage in Congressional Mid-Terms Falls to Just 2%It's like a train just collided with Bill Kristol's and AllahPundit's hopes and dreams. Sad!Donald Trump's job approval rating has bounced back from the record low registered in last month's Monmouth University Poll , as more Americans now see the president as having achieved some legislative success. The poll finds that support for the recently passed tax reform plan has increased and Republicans have made gains in the generic House ballot test. Pres. Trump's job rating now stands at 42% approve and 50% disapprove. While his net rating continues to dwell in negative territory, this is an improvement from his December low of 32% approve and 56% disapprove. The current results mark a return to the ratings he received in the late summer and early fall of 2017. Positive signs for Trump include an uptick in public opinion that he has been successful in moving his agenda through Congress and increasing support for the recently enacted tax reform plan. A majority (55%) of Americans say that Trump has been at least somewhat successful at getting Congress to pass his legislative agenda, while 41% say he has not been successful. This marks a reversal from December - before the tax reform bill was approved - when only 42% said Trump had been successful with Congress and 53% said he had not been successful. Opinion is currently divided on the landmark tax reform plan - 44% approve and 44% disapprove. But this marks a significant increase in public support from December, when just 26% approved of the bill and 47% disapproved. Perhaps more importantly, fewer Americans (36%) believe that their own federal taxes will go up under the plan than felt the same when the bill was in its final legislative stages last month (50%). Still, the number who believe that their taxes will go up (36%) outnumber those who believe that their taxes will go down (24%) or stay the same (32%) under the new system. ... In a look ahead to 2018, Democrats currently hold a negligible edge on the generic Congress ballot. If the election for House of Representatives were held today, 47% of registered voters say they would vote for or lean toward voting for the Democratic candidate in their district compared to 45% who would support the Republican. This marks a dramatic shift from last month, when Democrats held a 15 point advantage on the generic ballot (51% to 36%).Down from 15 points to 2 points. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

The Democrats achieved a huge tactical success on the messaging over the tax bill, but they never realized that it was going to turn into a huge strategic blunder.
They managed to convince a significant part of the country, who couldn't be bothered to really pay attention, that this tax bill was All for the Rich, that it lined fat cat profits, helped only Corporations, and would do nothing for them. It's what they wanted to believe, so it was easy to convince them of that. BUT now the real story is leaking out in their paychecks. And not only do they see that the Tax Bill is actually a pretty good deal, they also realize that the Dems and the MSM have been lying to them about this all the time. Same thing happening over "Net Neutrality". Got a lot of people up in arms, but what's gonna happen to that fervor when month after month goes by and nothing actually changes in their internet service at all? a) congressional seats are district by district, not nationwide or even statewide. Who cares if 100% of the people in DC would vote D? Gallup was SOO Bad that in 2016 they didn't even do polling for Prsidential Race
They announced on their website that at least national polling is worthless now, that you cannot do any real polling and get any statistically useful results, with several key reasons. The entire industry has turned into crap. News organizations use polls to create stories about what they want to write about, an opinion piece disguised as a news item by a poll. Pollsters either by design or ignorance weight their polls with faulty methods like over polling Democrats in a national election. People just don't like to talk to pollsters, so they're struggling to reach everyone but lonely cat ladies and leftist zealots. Fewer and fewer people use a land line and its harder to reach and poll cell phones. There's just a host of problems. Which is why in the last 10 or so major worldwide elections and events they keep getting it wrong. Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at January 31, 2018 02:18 PM (39g3+) 157

I mean, not that it would change the addled minds of the left come Nov. Swing voters care about their paychecks, home value and retirement. Championing illegals and making sure we have transgenders in the Military is not going to do it. I don't buy 55% disapproval. Not even close.
And the typical, lazy approach to mid-terms, exemplified by the GOP in 2010, was to sit there and let the election come to them thanks to a toxic WH/Dem agenda. Trump/GOP agenda is pretty popular now, Dems, to the extent they have one at all, is veering out into LaRouchean freakazoid territory. Well its a pretty safe bet that any speech given as a rebuttal to President Trump will be called a huge success by the left even if it was five minutes of making fart noises with his armpit.
Still, the number who believe that their taxes will go up (36%) outnumber those who believe that their taxes will go down (24%) or stay the same (32%) under the new system. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis is considering banning all cell phones and personal electronic devices such as FitBits from the Pentagon, defense officials confirmed Wednesday.
Mattis had considered banning the devices before last weekends revelation that data from smart phones and watches, such as FitBit, had been aggregated in a way that revealed detailed location and personnel data on bases worldwide. The security incident brought more attention to the review, officials said. I love Mattis but this is a stupid reaction. And unworkable. Being able track someone to a State Side Base where they work is NOT the problem. The problem is people using their mobile devises OCONUS and or in a Combat zone to track their movements. Come on guys focus. As far as the camera functions of phones, that is another issue but banning phones in most areas is not the way to go and it would bring gov work to a screaching halt. First line of defense - The FBI never used the Steele Dossier to get a warrant, that's preposterous! Second line of defense - Eeen if they showed the Dossier to the FISA Judge, it's no big deal, because they had other evidence supporting an investigation, too. Current like of Defense - okay, even if all they had was the Dossier, that still at least raised suspicions, and so it wasn't against the law to start an investigation, was it? It's a real low bar! Any suspicion at all justifies surveillance!!! How dare you question the FBI!!! Posted by: Tom Servo at January 31, 2018 02:36 PM (k1TUh) 286

Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at January 31, 2018 02:35 PM (39g3+) Because they have never had to budget at all. Ever. They pay for things and there is always money there. They have never had to say 'Well, I would really like this, but I need to hold off for a couple weeks.' $1000 over the course of the year might not be earth shattering, but it means you have to be less worried about picking up some extra food at the grocery store to make sure there is enough money in the account for rent this month, because your rent hits and then a week later your phone and electric bill hit so you do not have a huge amount of leeway. Can you wait to pay the car insurance a couple days, the penalty there is not too high. This is a foreign country to them. Posted by: Aetius451AD at January 31, 2018 02:39 PM (ycWCI) 305

The FBI has issued a statement on the Nunes memo. It was issued without reference to Director Wray or anyone else and no one is quoted. It does not say the memo contains any inaccuracies, but instead it says this odd thing:
As expressed during our initial review, we have grave concerns about material omissions of fact that fundamentally impact the memo's accuracy. Facts are missing, according to this anonymous statement, and those omissions somehow make the memo fundamentally inaccurate. This is a tightrope statement, not exactly disputing but disputing nonetheless, and not quoting anyone as to what their problems are. Bizarre. Boy, with that generic ballot the trend is not someone's friend.
FYI Oct '09 the Dems had a 12 pt advantage in the generic ballot, and the Repubs had a 2 pt advantage by Feb '10. How did that election turn out again? Posted by: Joe, no that other one at January 31, 2018 03:03 PM (7pOq5) 455

Family, neighbors, and country curb store neighbors are all in agreement that the truck accident was on purpose but it fizzled and did not cause the damage that the criminals expected. But it was a signal to everybody that it's open season on Trump and Trump supporters.

I have totally dropped Hot Air and Red State from my even occasional browsing. They are in the same boat as the NFL, I have more free time thanks to their buffoonery. Speaking of NFL, it looks like Fox sports fvcked up. Big-boobed Liz Claman was giddy that Fox Sports got Thursday night Football for the next five years. She is wearing a nice snug blue top, but the cameraman is not cooperating. It was nice to see, once again, the mention of medical personnel in the GOP who were able to provide medical assistance at the train wreck. Probably the same medical personnel in the GOP who were able to provide medical assistance at the softball shooting. I like being able to identify with a party with people like that. $1000 is meaningless if the middle class gets to keep it, but is everything if liberals get to take it and buy votes with it.

"Example: I worked in a video store in college. If someone came to me now and said "I have incontrovertible proof that you stole $200 from the cash register in June of 1998!" I know it is false, but how would I refute other than to say "I didn't do it!" Tax records are no help. Bank records would be hard to get to and hardly clearing. The damage as they say would be done regardless."
That's a serious problem, and it's EXACTLY why we have Statues of Limitations built into most of our criminal laws. (none for murder and other heinous crimes, of course) Many people think of Statutes of Limitations as some kind of technicality, but they exist because after a certain amount of time goes by it has been long recognized that it is IMPOSSIBLE for a defendant to put up a competent defense. And that's why we should always be very, very suspicious when anyone comes up with claims of malfeasance many, many years after the fact. It doesn't mean they're not true, but it does mean that they are always very, very shaky and could never be proven in a court of law. Posted by: Tom Servo at January 31, 2018 03:06 PM (k1TUh) 469

$1000 more a year means the difference in being able to fly out and attend my nieces wedding, instead of having to just see the pictures. Or being able to replace my 1984 refrigerator that is surviving mainly on prayer. Or finally fixing the annoying leak in the roof. No, none of those are very dramatic. But they mean the world to me. I'm so resentful of people telling me I'm selfish for wanting the money to do those things.
