Doctors To Begin Fighting Cancer With RUSSIAN BOTS and Gene-Editing, But Mostly Gene Editing

They'll use CRISPER genetic scissors to edit gene sequences to turn a patient's cells into "expert cancer killers," this RUSSIAN BOT is paying me in rubles and hookers to tell you.

Actually he just paid me three more hookers to say he's not a RUSSIAN BOT. He says he's a Real Down-Home Country Coca-Cola All-American Buckaroo who likes Trucks with Heavy Metal Bollocks and Tackle Football Pastimes, and I believe him, because man, these hookers are sure swell.

They don't speak any English but together we speak the international language: anal.

Doctors at the University of Pennsylvania say they will use CRISPR to modify human immune cells so that they become expert cancer killers, according to plans posted this week to a directory of ongoing clinical trials.

The study will enroll up to 18 patients fighting three different types of cancer--multiple myeloma, sarcoma, and melanoma-in what could become the first medical use of CRISPR outside China, where similar studies have been under way.

An advisory group to the National Institutes of Health initially gave a green light to the Penn researchers in June 2016 (see "First Human Test of CRISPR Proposed"), but until now it was not known whether the trial would proceed.

"We are in the final steps of preparing for the trial, but cannot provide a specific projected start date,” a spokesperson for Penn Medicine told MIT Technology Review.

Good news, fellow Americans and RUSSIAN BOTS, obviously. However, if you're worried about the slippery slope of genetic modification, this is the perfect foot-in-the-door: hardly anyone can complain about using CRISPER to turn cells into cancer killers.

But once we prove we can do that, why not start modifying cells to be better at fighting viruses? And then -- why not modify them to burn more fat? Or to turn normal fat capitalist-swine Americans into SUPERIOR NEW SOVIET SUPER-MEN, my Real American Friend just paid me one new hooker with a very full bladder to say.

BTW, I have no problem with this -- hookers with full bladders or genetic modification -- but I know some people do.

At some point we might have to start tinkering with the cells' self-destruct countdown clock, which causes aging, but doesn't have to.

What can be created from these sorts of treatments is entirely unknown. Could some weird new sort of virus emerge? It sure could. Or something even worse. But we know pretty much nothing about any of that so care is called for.

Editing the genetic code of cells is a very dangerous business. It is something that should only be done with the strictest of precautions.

Its like the paranoid people claiming oil companies are suppressing alternate energy. No, if someone came up with something better and cheaper than petroleum, then the oil companies would instantly buy into that to get rich of it, too. They aren't religiously wedded to the product they love the money they make from whatever they are selling at the time.

True Story! Bull nettles, grow pretty prolifically in East Texas, have fine spines on them which will burn you straight through a pair of jeans if you brush up against them. Nasty, nasty, plants, grow about 3' high. The poison in them is a base, can be neutralized by an acid. Like Uric Acid. Had a friend who was dirt biking years ago, flipped the trail bike and rolled through a big patch of bull nettles, his skin was burning all over, and they were miles out in the woods.

So guess what his buddies volunteered to do for him out of the goodness of their hearts! And they did, and it really did end the burning.

containers of urea were also used to quench a newly forged sword by medieval swordsmiths, it has some chemical action which specially hardens the hot steel. Interesting stuff.

342 But once we prove we can do that, why not start modifying cells to be better at fighting viruses?

Is a CRISPER like a virus? I'm no biologist, but if IIRC, viruses are minimalistic - all they do is restructure the DNA in the cell's nucleus so that it makes only viruses. Then the cell breaks apart, and the newly formed viruses go on to repeat the process. So a modified virus that just changed one gene in the nucleus and did nothing else could fix a lot of cells, perhaps cure genetic diseases like Kleinfelter's or peanut allergies.

Looks to me like the genes the Native Americans had, or didn't have, which left them susceptible to Euro/African diseases. The genes which lead men (and women) to go pork anything that moves will lead them to perverts, at an early age.

471 Oh yeah, it can cure stuff. It'll be great, so great that the CRISPR treatment in childhood will be the new immunization. You'll have to have it early on of course, take care of some of those nasty things that could crop up otherwise, like diabetes or various cancers. And it will of course be mandatory, but who would be against getting rid of cancer or diabetes?

They won't mention about the parts that reduce aggression and increase compliance, of course.

472 Cancer can't be "cured" because it's not one disease, but hundreds. Some are environmentally caused, some genetically, some a combination.

474 342 Is a CRISPER like a virus? I'm no biologist, but if IIRC, viruses are minimalistic - all they do is restructure the DNA in the cell's nucleus so that it makes only viruses.

the Wikipedia page is pretty informative. It's spelled "CRISPR", though.

CRISPR looks to be part of a bacterium's immune system. A protein recognizes invading DNA and makes a snippet, which is then inserted into an array held in the bacterial DNA. Copies of this array are made during an invasion, which guide other proteins to locate the snippet on the invader and break its DNA there, thus inactivating the invader.

Naturally, people are using the various bits of the system to build DNA snippenators that target specific bits of DNA and can coerce the victim to insert specific sequences as part of the repair process.

At least, that's what it looks like to me.

Bejeebus Jane and here I thought you were the model of propriety. I'm shocked I tell you, just shocked.

476 I'll add one thing about Freddie Mercury - there have been several very good vocalists in Rock music, men like Justin Hayward, Greg Lake, Roger Daltry, a good list.

But in terms of range, power projection, and vocal quality, there is nobody in almost any musical genre who had the astounding vocal abilities that Freddie Mercury did. You'd have to go to the Metropolitan Opera or La Scala in Milan to find his equal. Casual listeners never quite grasped just how incredibly good his vocal skills were.

477 Think it's probably the same guy who used to comment here - on Schlichters twitter there's a comment of JeffB that is one of the most breathtakingly clueless in recent times (which is saying something), if it's not sarcastic, and it doesn't appear to be.

Calls the whole FBI mega-scandal about texts a "partisan muddle". WTF? How can anything involving the FBI be partisan, much less a muddle? Unless the FBI is completely off the rails, acting as a political agent. Discussions of trying to affect presidential campaigns, and dark hints about further actions if the voters do the wrong thing. Mind-blowing, historic, Third World criminal corruption at the very top of the FBI and DOJ - but to JeffB, it's a "partisan muddle". Guess I missed all those past instances of FBI counter-intel operatives and senior DOJ/FBI management jumping in to influence political campaigns.

It gets worse. He suggests Strzok's comment implying that there's unlikely to be anything to the "Trump/Russia collusion" nonsense (gee, ya think?) somehow removes the "partisan" or biased label from Strzok.

Words fail in response to this.
