Yes, I see the Can-can dancer with leprosy is asking the Old Woman in the Wedding Dress "How Are You?' as Father Time is about to sweep them both away with his Broom of Sweeping Timeiness. Of course! But, to make sense the Old Woman in the Wedding Dressing needs to be balancing a chunk of Camembert on her head. Goya went a little nuts in his later years... old, a widower, deaf, fatigued from witnessing years of war, and afraid of old age & death. His art went from beautiful to disturbing... in this painting he's more than likely showing the futility of fighting against the ravages of time, hence the grotesque characters.

"And yes, Goya seems to have been clinically depressed, as in carrying a pool of darkness in his soul depressed."
There's a very good reason for this, he lived through the complete destruction of what had been a very wealthy, powerful, and self entitled society. This shows up in most of his art (Such as 3rd of May, 1808, The Colossus, Saturn devouring his son) Goya was born in 1746, at what was arguably the peak of the Spanish Empire. Madrid was wealthy, comfortable, and cultured. Then came the Age of Revolution, and the Napoleonic Wars. Spain was invaded, it's government destroyed, and the Peninsular War devastated much of the Spanish countryside as some sided with the English, and some sided with Napoleon. With Spain's military power destroyed the colonies all revolted and Spain was left penniless and shattered. The old woman in the painting above may be, metaphorically speaking, Goya's depiction of Spain herself in 1820 (the date of the painting) Posted by: Tom Servo at January 17, 2018 09:49 AM (V2Yro) 106

Goya was fascinating. He was a court painter to the Spanish crown before the Napoleonic wars, he was pretty much a court painter to the pro-French court during the first part of the wars, was patronized by the French in a small way, and when he fell out of favor he then did his series "The Horrors of War" as a series of engravings, these are seen as pro-guerilla work and as patriotic works supporting the Spanish against the French. As such he was considered with suspicion by the restored Bourbons after Napoleon and the French were beaten.
In a way he managed to surf the changing tides of the Napoleonic era far better than his patrons, who pretty much all were exiled, murdered or died in exile. He was talented, and prolific, and though he did not do what would be considered photo-realistic work like Velasquez, he was very well thought of. His etchings and paintings of the Spanish war were both propaganda and a form of journalism. I would point out that most of the etchings have descriptions in Spanish, and a surprising number of the descriptions are misspelled. Posted by: Kindltot at January 17, 2018 09:49 AM (2K6fY) 110

What is art?
Discuss... That's a completely unfair question, but it's unfair in the good way so I'll jump in. I say that art is "what happens at the intersection of the work and the audience". So, it doesn't matter what the artist's motivations or politics were or what he was trying to provoke. What matters is what the viewer feels. Art moves you. But then you get the difference between art and beauty. A sunset also moves you. Catching a striped bass on a fly you tied yourself moves you, unless you're an asshole. So, is God beauty but not art? Does art require a human consciousness intending to provoke a human emotion? I'm going with that, for now, if we choose to debate this. It's not art. Most of Goya isn't art.
What is art? Discuss... I'm in the "if it reveals truth about the human condition, it's art" camp. I despise the "if it creates an emotional response" shock "art" camp. I could see how one might argue this is just meant to shock a response, but personally, I think it reveals truth about the human condition. Looks to me as if the aged woman there takes care of herself, but time has laid her low. She takes care to dress herself with class and beauty. She has a good friend beside her. Heaven is just over her shoulder. There's ugliness, sure, and maybe morbid humor, but the story it's telling me is beautiful. She lived a good life and is about to be accepted into heaven. That's what I see. Posted by: bonhomme at January 17, 2018 09:55 AM (iv0p7) 128

Sure, Piss Christ is a provocation and it pushes buttons so you get simple emotion. That doesn't make it art because the viewer knows that it's just a provocation. Something drove him to apply pigments to a canvas, with a great amount of skill unlike many contemporary numbnuts poseurs, and present it to the world as a finished product. Willowed:
When considering this, it's useful to consider events like Cromwell's takeover - everyone in that movement sincerely believed that they were curing the great abuses in their society that a corrupt nobility had taken for granted for centuries - BUT the solution turned out to be far worse. There are people who sensing the winds of change take the opportunity to brew up a storm. If you are bailing out a boat you will necessarily rock it some - there are people who will rock the boat in rhythm with you. Their purpose is not to bail the boat out but to use your bailing as an excuse to rock the boat. Just because somebody gets behind you in your cause does not mean they are pushing the same way you are - often they are there to stab you in the back. In other words you have to watch your allies harder than you watch your enemies. You would think people would have learned these things by watching the RNCe over the years. Some lawmakers would like to see the Justice Department prosecute former spy chief James Clapper for inaccurate testimony to Congress about domestic surveillance before it's too late.
Privacy-conscious critics say looming five-year statutes of limitation for perjury and making false statements -- establishing a March 12 deadline for charges -- make an urgent case for action, and that nonprosecution would set a dangerous precedent that impedes oversight and executive-branch accountability. Clapper, director of national intelligence from 2010 to 2017, testified during a March 2013 Senate Intelligence Committee hearing that the NSA was "not wittingly" collecting "any type of data at all" on millions of Americans. Months later, former NSA contractor Edward Snowden revealed secret court orders forced phone companies to turn over all U.S. call records on an "ongoing, daily basis." In an apology letter, Clapper wrote that he gave a "clearly erroneous" answer because he "simply didn't think of" the call-record collection. But in an MSNBC interview he offered a different explanation, saying he gave the "least untruthful" answer because he was "asked a, 'When are you going to stop beating your wife?' kind of question, meaning not answerable necessarily by a simple yes or no." Is this Ithaca or Peyton Place ...
The president of Ithaca College in upstate pleaded no contest to sexually abusing a patient when she worked at a psychiatric hospital nearly two decades ago. Shirley M. Collado, who worked at The Center at the Psychiatric institute of Washington in D.C., was accused of having a five-month sexual relationship with a female patient who was undergoing therapy for post-traumatic stress in 2000, The Ithacan reported. While Collado was convicted of one count of misdemeanor sexual abuse in August 2001 after pleading no contest, she has maintained her innocence, saying she didn't have the legal, financial and emotional resources to fight the case. The patient, who was receiving treatment at The Center after she suffered the abuse of another doctor, alleged she and Collado kissed after a therapy session on May 20, according to Assistant U.S. Attorney Sharon Marcus-Kurn. Collado fondled her on at least two occasions and the two kissed after most individual therapy sessions in the following weeks, according to the prosecutor. Collado resigned from The Center after her husband committed suicide on July 9, 2000, and the patient moved in with her "shortly after" she was discharged from the hospital, according to court documents cited by the Ithacan. Hit the nail on the head. It can only happen when there's a military force in the seceding area which is strong enough to repel any other force that wants to move in and say different. I guess I have a built in contempt for anyone who proposes any level of "revolution" without talking about the military force required for any such effort to succeed. If you're not willing to shed a lot of blood in the process, don't waste everyone's time by talking about it. Posted by: Tom Servo at January 17, 2018 10:35 AM (V2Yro) 272

Why is Sweden so afraid about being taken over by Russia but not Islam? It's not even a close call, for anyone who's sane. They get your elders information then send emails to a bunch of nursing homes, or assisted living locations. The different locations compete for placing the individual, the winner pays a referral fee to 'Place for Mom'. Whether individuals can get a 'better deal' by avoiding 'Place for Mom' and the kickback - I mean 'referral fee' - is debatable. It's not a small chunk of change. I heard a good theory about the Salem witch stuff which I wish I could remember better. The gist of it was that lots of Puritans went up to Maine (we say down Maine, but that's a wind thing) and some of the got really murdered by Indians.
Orphan girls and servants who had no one to serve anymore would come back to MA and tell the little girls in their care stories about what had happened in Maine, and those transmogriphied into the witch stories. Posted by: Bandersnatch at January 17, 2018 10:42 AM (fuK7c) 295
Vermont was once known as New Connecticut.
ISTR hearing once in a civics-like course in high school or before, the protocol for forming a new state. Required the permission of the legislatures of all the surrounding states. Did not require military force or rebellion. Interesting point, and hard to imagine outside the Missouri Compromise and following events: could the federal government force this judgment onto those states, or would it be limited to exerting pressure? There was a compromise once, and I hate to bring it up because it involves Toledo. Well, all of that part of the world has moved around a lot based on who lost the last war. What is Belarus was mostly Poland. What was East Prussia isn't. Poland has stopped existing a couple of times and its boundaries have not been sacrosanct. This Polish girl was saying that Gdansk had not been German, as in it didn't have a German post office, it didn't have German military draft, it didn't have German-speaking Gunther Grass grow up there and write the Danzig trilogy which led to a Nobel prize.
