"33 No reputable study has ever shown sea level to be rising in any ocean. The latest is a study of the Indian Ocean and it has not risen either."
With one qualification; sea levels have been rising gradually since the end of the last ice age, when they were approximately 400 feet lower than today. About 7000 years ago the rise slowed, when most of the great glaciers were finally melted. What hasn't changed is the slow, slight rise that has been constant for about the last 7,000 years or so. Although there's good reason to believe that sea levels were actually about 3 to 4 feet higher in Roman times than they are today. The mutants in the other room are obsessed with Christmas and seafood, so they forced this poor girl to put on a Santa costume and eat oysters. Unbeknownst to them, however, the girl is a professional poisoner and brought her bag of poisons with her when they kidnapped her. Thus, when they finish their conversation about how they will force her to decorate their tree against her will and then eat their fill of oysters they will have a nasty surprise.

This is a nice example of the amount of detail you get in a Dutch Baroque painting. Zoom in, if you can, and take a good look at it. Everything is rendered to feel the fabric and textures, and taste the food. Near the visual center are those eyes. They hold your stare and then the smirk reveals the playful, suggestive mood of the piece. For the full effect of Dutch Baroque detail, I'd go with a vanitas still-life. Those are fun to interpret.

Slight chance of light freezing rain for the morning (20% chance) with us warming up to 41. There hasn't been one drop of rain this morning, and the cloud cover is only partial. They closed down all the schools last night. Absolutely ridiculous.

Mark Steyn brings a new perspective to shootings by police: 'standard police procedure' must change.
https://tinyurl.com/ycmjfga9 Excerpt: In 2011, German police fatally shot six citizens. In Denmark, police shot 11 people in 11 years. In Australia, 41 people were shot by police in eight years, and the then Justice Minister thought that that was too high .In Iceland, police have fatally shot thoone suspect. That's one guy in the entire history of the country. He was killed by police last December. In 2011 the German police fired 85 bullets and 40 were warning shots. That's all of them. The entire police force. The whole country. Eighty-five bullets in one year. That's seven bullets per month. One bullet for every million German citizens. The same year - 2011 - the Miami Police Department blew through the German Polizei's annual bullet allowance on just one traffic incident: Police killed Raymond Herisse, 22. of Boynton Beach in a barrage of gunfire after they said he refused an order to pull over while speeding down crowded Collins Avenue in his Hyundai... Twelve officers -- from Miami Beach and Hialeah -- unleashed more than 100 rounds at Herisse, police said. The hail of bullets also struck and wounded three bystanders. In short, 'Going by The Book' is getting too many Americians killed. Posted by: Smilin' Jack at January 08, 2018 09:48 AM (zMj9Z) 104

And what the hell is a cockle?
******* A cockle is a bivalve ocean creature that bears a passing resemblance to the two-leaflet structure of the mitral heart valve, hence the term "the cockles of my heart". In reality however, the mitral valve was named because it carries a passing resemblance to the mitre hats worn by high officials of the Roman Catholic Church. Coming full circle, the secluded domiciles of Catholic nuns in training are called cloisters, which rhymes with oysters which are bivalves, much like cockles. Thus endeth today's lesson. Naturalfake, look at what the charges are, what the maintenance fees are, and if you are planning on doing funds, keep an eye out on what sort of cut the house gets, and if they charge you for the buying and selling they do.

I'm currently reading a very interesting book on the relationship between Reagan and JPII. One takeaway I had is that Catholicism is to Reagan what Islam is to Obama. I'm late to the party, as usual, but.....
In 2011, German police fatally shot six citizens. Posted by: Smilin' Jack at January 08, 2018 09:48 AM (zMj9Z) I really lose patience with comparisons like these. I generally like Steyn, but this is lazy journalism. He is drawing comparisons between cultures that are vary much at odds with each other. For example, he sites how may police officers have fire rounds in Germany, Australia, and Iceland, and then claims that because they have fired fewer rounds than JUST MIAMI BEACH AND HIALEAH!!!!! that American cops are just trigger happy murderers. This ignores so much of the cultures of these places as to strain credulity. How many German cops were shot last year? How many German cops were shot and killed last year? How many Icelandic cops have ever been assaulted? Do you suppose that the public attitudes between cops and the public over here versus over there have anything to do with how skittish cops over here might be? Stop comparing us to Europeans for anything. We have different mindsets, different experiences, and different ideas about politics, freedom, economics, damn near everything. As much as I detest Obama, he has solid political skills. The fact that he also had the media acting as cheerleaders shouldn't obscure the fact that, like Billy Jeff, he's a very smooth operator. Hill also had the media working to elect her but they couldn't hide the fact that she is a terrible, unlikable candidate.
I can't stand Choom but the truth is that many people like him. Hell, they love him. And not just the free Obamaphone people. As for Liz Warren, just swap out her name and you get the same result. The democrats have big problem, that they created. They've polarized the vote. Once you polarize your vote, you can't win. You have no path.
You have to find a way to appeal to a broad section of the country to win. Identity politics prevents that. If they run anything less than moonbat crazy left, they will lose all their moonbat voters. If they try to run crazy moonbat to please the crazy far left, they lose the moderates. If you run on supporting BLM, you lose middle american white voters, and just about anybody else who realizes how nuts they are. If you say you don't support BLM, you lost the urban black vote. If you campaign on amnesty, you lose the working class vote. If you campaign against, you lost the hispanic vote. If you campaign on crazy LGBT issues like shared bathrooms, you lose average every day people with kids. If you go against, you lost the LGBT urban vote. I really believe the environment of identity politics they've created will sink them no matter what they do. Posted by: Agent Cooper at January 08, 2018 11:00 AM (oyCqX) 372

one thing everyone is forgetting about the prospect of an Oprah (or other unknown) candidacy - the unknown ALWAYS looks fantastic on paper; they have never said anything to irritate anyone, they have never taken any positions anyone can oppose, they have never gone out on a limb, their statements have been carefully parsed and written for them so as to seem non confrontational; it's easy.
Once anyone actually commits to taking real positions, the shit starts to hit the fan. Posted by: Tom Servo at January 08, 2018 11:02 AM (k1TUh) 377

He was helped along by quite a few other professional liars and word twisters. His so called education was paid for his way through the institutions was greased. Don't make the mistake of substituting your bias for what the real environment in the country was and who the candidates were. By pretty much everyone's assessment Hillary was an awful candidate and Trump won by winning 3 states by a total of 77,000 votes, states Obama carried twice. And Obama energized the black and younger votes that Hillary did not. And Obama had the power of incumbency in his pocket. I'm as happy as anyone that Trump won and even happier the way he is governing but I'm under no illusions that we didn't get incredibly lucky by having Hillary as the opposition. "I really believe the environment of identity politics they've created will sink them no matter what they do."
That's what has happened in Texas, that's why no democrat has won a statewide race in 24 years now. It's not that the state is really all that hard core republican, these are the same people who were conservative democrats 35 years ago. What happened is that the Texas Dem Party thought they could grow through the mexican vote, so they went full Open Borders Activist, and then they realized they had to have 100% black city vote, so they went all welfare - anti law enforcement, every candidate. Problem for them, anyone they nominate who isn't Open Borders loses the Mexican vote they've been working to cultivate, anyone who isn't anti-LEO and pro-welfare loses the urban black vote that they need. And so Democrats have no chance in Texas, because they work so hard to alienate about 60% of the population. (and when they do run a pretty white girl like Wendy Davis, of course she is All In on Planned Parenthood and Abortion for All!) Posted by: Tom Servo at January 08, 2018 11:07 AM (k1TUh) 402
I called that election back when the MFM had Scankles up by 15 points. They way oversampled Democrats and failed to take into account black males staying at home. Blacks simply will not turnout at Obama levels for a white candidate. In those cloase southern States that Trump won is Scankles had been black she would have won and that would have been the election.

I didn't say everyone loved FDR or JFK, Zod. All presidents have some bitter opposition. Not everyone loved Reagan either. But there are presidents you can build a cult of personality around and others you can't - Nixon might have won in a landslide in '72, but even if Watergate had never happened, you could not have built one around him. That's not just because the media hated him. Nixon just didn't have that sort of charisma. People respected him and believed him to be smart and capable, but he didn't inspire love.

According to the IG report, Gonsalves' pending nomination for a third star prompted an angry reaction from a staffer of Rep. Jim Langevin, D-R.I. The Army IG report redacted the names of the female congressional staffer and about 10 other people who were present during the October 2016 meeting at Fort Carson, Colorado. The report included testimony from members of Gonsalves' staff who took part in the session. The complaint cited accusations that Gonsalves took issue with the female congressional staffer's youth, and that the general said she should take detailed notes on why the military needed funding "since she was a Democrat and did not believe in funding the military," the IG report stated. Oprah Winfrey is shrewd and capable. She also has all of the retail politicking skills Hillary Clinton noticeably lacks. It would be a serious mistake to dismiss her as a celebrity novelty candidate.
She's shrewd and capable of giving ingratiating, kiss ass interviews with her guests. That is not a skill that translates well when it comes to debating a political opponent. I think she was so popular because her female fans suffered from soft Biden bigotry "Oooh look! She's so well spoken! I guess if I'm a gushing fan, that means I'm not a racist". Ie. her popularity is due to virtue signaling. That may not translate into votes any more, given the current shift. Posted by: Steve and Cold Bear at January 08, 2018 11:23 AM (/qEW2) 453

Saw a piece on how Obama got where he got. Basically, Obama is the scion of two generations of CIA backed leftist operatives - his grandparents and his mother. The CIA wanted to soak up all the non-Soviet aligned leftists in places like Indonesia and Kenya to deprive the Soviets of available tender. To do so they needed agents with available cash to bundle the kindling. Seems Obama's grandparents were a Hawaii based hub where third world leftists would feel comfortable at UofH with grand dad doing the meet and greets and grandma becoming a Bank VP to move CIA dollars overseas. Momma was in the family business and seems to have had a thing for dark meat - ergo Barry. She and Barry were stationed in Indonesia. On their return Barry was awarded a full scholarship at Punaho, then Occidental, then Columbia then Harvard Law and was made editor of Harvard Law. The reason all these academic things seemed to go Barry's way was the CIA would move their leftists into academia. Basically, Obama is the blowback on America's counter intel ops to deprive Soviets an easy target in the third world. Not surprisingly, Obama saw the CIA and NSA as his patrons while President.
