This reminds me of something a tour guide said, I think it was at Colonial Williamsburg or something like that....that oysters were considered trash food, real low cuisine back in the 18th/early 19th century.

With one qualification; sea levels have been rising gradually since the end of the last ice age, when they were approximately 400 feet lower than today. About 7000 years ago the rise slowed, when most of the great glaciers were finally melted. What hasn't changed is the slow, slight rise that has been constant for about the last 7,000 years or so.
Although there's good reason to believe that sea levels were actually about 3 to 4 feet higher in Roman times than they are today. (See history: Pevensey Castle for one example)

I think I've seen unbiased data that indicates a 1mm per year rise in oceans. In 100 years as much as a really long cigarette.
So I can appreciate the hand-wringing concern and hair-on-fire outrage as high tide moves 1mm higher every year.

About two miles from our vacation land in Central NY, there's a seafood wholesaler. He's the main supplier for the region. Every year we go camping and get 5 pounds of bottleneck clams for ~$5.00. They're still salty from the ocean. Just start a camp fire and throw them on the skillet. Wait a few minutes and *yum*.

In one of the books I've read on the subject, the author noted that most locks are meant to serve as notices, more or less, that the contents of whatever's inside is personal property. Breaking or bypassing the lock constitutes a crime.

If someone really wants to get in your shed when you're not around, they can just as easily take an axe to the wooden door. I've observed Grandson the Younger (age 13 months) regarding phones. He sees adults using them, so they are items of great interest, of course.
In the flip phone era, toy phones needed buttons and sounds and that made for a good toy. But smartphones have few buttons and a huge, visually rich display. The current toy phones just don't cut it.

I really lose patience with comparisons like these. I generally like Steyn, but this is lazy journalism. He is drawing comparisons between cultures that are vary much at odds with each other. For example, he sites how may police officers have fire rounds in Germany, Australia, and Iceland, and then claims that because they have fired fewer rounds than JUST MIAMI BEACH AND HIALEAH!!!!! that American cops are just trigger happy murderers. This ignores so much of the cultures of these places as to strain credulity.
How many German cops were shot last year?
How many German cops were shot and killed last year?
How many Icelandic cops have ever been assaulted?
Do you suppose that the public attitudes between cops and the public over here versus over there have anything to do with how skittish cops over here might be?

You have to find a way to appeal to a broad section of the country to win. Identity politics prevents that.
If they run anything less than moonbat crazy left, they will lose all their moonbat voters. If they try to run crazy moonbat to please the crazy far left, they lose the moderates. If you run on supporting BLM, you lose middle american white voters, and just about anybody else who realizes how nuts they are. If you say you don't support BLM, you lost the urban black vote.
If you campaign on amnesty, you lose the working class vote. If you campaign against, you lost the hispanic vote.
If you campaign on crazy LGBT issues like shared bathrooms, you lose average every day people with kids. If you go against, you lost the LGBT urban vote.

Don't make the mistake of substituting your bias for what the real environment in the country was and who the candidates were.
By pretty much everyone's assessment Hillary was an awful candidate and Trump won by winning 3 states by a total of 77,000 votes, states Obama carried twice. And Obama energized the black and younger votes that Hillary did not. And Obama had the power of incumbency in his pocket.
I'm as happy as anyone that Trump won and even happier the way he is governing but I'm under no illusions that we didn't get incredibly lucky by having Hillary as the opposition.

That's what has happened in Texas, that's why no democrat has won a statewide race in 24 years now. It's not that the state is really all that hard core republican, these are the same people who were conservative democrats 35 years ago. What happened is that the Texas Dem Party thought they could grow through the mexican vote, so they went full Open Borders Activist, and then they realized they had to have 100% black city vote, so they went all welfare - anti law enforcement, every candidate. Problem for them, anyone they nominate who isn't Open Borders loses the Mexican vote they've been working to cultivate, anyone who isn't anti-LEO and pro-welfare loses the urban black vote that they need.
And so Democrats have no chance in Texas, because they work so hard to alienate about 60% of the population. (and when they do run a pretty white girl like Wendy Davis, of course she is All In on Planned Parenthood and Abortion for All!)

I think she was so popular because her female fans suffered from soft Biden bigotry "Oooh look! She's so well spoken! I guess if I'm a gushing fan, that means I'm not a racist". Ie. her popularity is due to virtue signaling. That may not translate into votes any more, given the current shift.

McCain tanked the race because he was pissed off that the base liked his VP pick better than him.
Mitt had been essentially running for POTUS for 20 years before getting the nomination. Yes, he wanted it. Badly. Look at how hard he fought during the primaries.
But he figured that it was his for the taking, that he deserved it, was entitled to the office and just needed to walk into the White House on angel's wings without fighting.
