back in 2009ish, live-in neice convinces absetnt-dad to give her enough(7K) to buy a used car. She winds up with a used BMW. I take her to Wawa for first time loading gas.
Takes us 10 minutes to open the gas-tank cover. We keep looking in the car for the release, but turns out you just push on it and it pops open.
Next bay over is three 20ish guys from NJ. They have to ask for my assistance as they don't know how to pump gas.
Nice to know I was only the 2nd biggest dummy there that night.

The left is centered around the notion that the government must control enough of society to implement perfect "fairness". That requires, in theory, infinite government. In practice of course it is just an excuse for those in power to increase their power. But even in theory it can't exist.
Imagine, if you will, a little communist village, where one man goes off and builds his own workshop. Is he allowed to keep it to himself, or must he share it with the rest of the village? And the village leaders, will incur enough power to itself to force him to do so - because if they do not everyone else will do the same...creating what we call 'capitalism'.

But, then the bottom numbers should be the lows, which doesn't make sense.

Nah, outside of Portland Metro, Salem, Corvallis, Eugene and Ashland it is pretty decent.
There is a lot of poverty and meth in the old timber towns since there is nothing there, but there is a lot of decent people too.
The clerk at the city court in Falls City in Polk county was interviewed by the local paper when she retired. Falls City is known as a rough place and has a reputation of being the sort of place where they pick their teeth with their belt knives. She said it was a wonderful community, a good place to raise kids, people are very nice and helpful, but you really should have a locking gas cap.

Regarding jar opening from a long ago thread, there is a sure fire approach.
- You can use a knife, fork, spoon or screwdriver. Pretty much anything similar.
- slide utensil between the jar and the lid.
- wiggle it around, slight outward lift, until you hear the "pop" of the air tight seal break.
- jar lid twists off pretty easily after.
Only method I use. Has never failed me.

Caesar Milan being the 'masculine' theory of dominance, and the 'no force' theory of dog training being the 'feminine' theory.
And it includes a bit of video from Buck Bannaman with a problem stallion.
It leads into politics and the difference between dominate patriarchy and feminine 'training.'
The videos are fascinating to watch, at least for me.

Yeah i think you can get a dog in a breed that's different than they usually are (a lazy shepherd, a bloodhound that can't track, etc) but in general, the dogs bred to be a certain way, will be, no matter how they are trained.
Its like having a panther for a pet. They may love the hell out of you and be gentle and kind... but they are one whisker away from being that monster in the jungle and fear, surprise, or just a person they don't know can make them that way suddenly.

I have seen some of his shows. His dominant theory and pack leader would be better for pit bulls. But unless someone was an expert, and there were no children around, I wouldn't chance it.
They were bred to fight, it's in their dna, not totally their fault. It's like pointers or border collies, or other specific breeds that will display the behavior even as puppies; whatever they were bred to be.
Have read too many stories to take the chance, personally. That Virginia story soldified my fears. The stories are always the same, the dogs are loving, and then something happens, and they just snap. Seemingly out of nowhere something triggers them, and they go into kill mode.

There will always be a system of government, that is what people do. And the systems get complex when more than a hundred individuals are involved. That is just people. But liberty is gained by cooperation and it is defended by society. However freedom is something owned by the individual, granted by God, not doled out by a government or state.
Breaking the bonds of a coercive state is OK, but shattering society to ensure freedom is counter-productive and wrong-headed since you wind up with out freedom and without liberty since there is no-one to back your claim and no way to defend your rights.
The secret is that the government must serve the needs of the people, not that the people serve the state.
Anyhow, I do suggest everyone read Lysander Spooner. He always has something insightful to say, for all that he has been dead these 130 years

Cold. A couple of years ago, I had a chimney cap put on the chimney. Not a flue cap, but full chimney cap, as there are a couple of flues in the same chimney.

The system of government in the US got weaker the further you got away from the people. Townships had the most power, counties less, states less, regions less, and federal the least. And that was the best system for maintaining liberty.
Now its reversed and liberty is basically rotting away. One of my favorite essays ace ever did on this blog was one where he realized he was amazed anyone could build a fire on the beach. He'd become so used to the tyranny of government limiting our lives and behavior he was surprised when people weren't so limited. And it was enlightening to him, one of those fish-in-water moments.

At its worst, it results in people making gigantic sums of money by working people in horrendous conditions they cannot get out of, producing overpriced things that people need.
Consider gasoline: everyone needs this stuff, enormously. If, say, one man owned all the collection, production, and distribution of all petroleum in the USA, he would be so rich the US Government would get loans from HIM and be a large chunk of the whole nation's GDP (as Rockefeller was).
Further, large areas of the nation would be so dependent on his jobs and work that they would have no choice where to work or what to do, and he could set his wages however he wanted. Hours however he wanted. Benefits however he wanted. Now you work 6 days a week, 10 hour days, for 35 cents an hour without vacation time or health benefits. And you work in ghastly conditions that are killing you. And your 10 year old son who works by your side.
That's the worst of what can happen in capitalism. And you can make whatever scenario you want but the truth is, people can and do get locked into jobs in areas where they are literally unable to escape. Cannot afford to move, cannot find any other work.
Capitalism can do terrible things to people. But its less terrible still than the alternatives. We live in a terrible world, often.

There's no record of Prima Noctu actually having been taken advantage of, that's one of those myths. But yes, life was terrible and dangerous.
As I noted repeatedly. But generally speaking, because of the low level of technology and travel, you were usually ignored by government and rarely had any contact with it. You have a lot of contact with the church, but the state was largely theoretical for many peasants. So freedom was a lot more widespread than it may seem based on the system. It just could unexpectedly and without pattern or reason end suddenly.

Sure, eventually. But it could take decades. There's a possibility that the Rockefeller monopoly could still exist today, shutting out and crushing all possible competition. He wasn't done buying and ruining everyone in his path to own it all yet, either.
Capitalism does eventually correct, but it can take a long time. And that's the kind of bad side that it carries with it. And yet, as I noted... less than other systems. Capitalism doesn't result in government purges jailing and murdering swathes of people on the path to utopia, for instance.
So its the worst economic system on earth... other than all competing systems.

There are some older films I've watched recently where it is surprising what they got away with on women. Clearly nipping in some scenes, when I'd have expected the Hayes code to shut that down. Some slightly see through outfits, too, especially in noir films.

I think that's probably true. Movies and shows romanticize the past, but people didn't have good dental care, so a lot of teeth missing. And healthcare was pretty early days. And no showers or plumbing or electricity! Ugh.
I was watching a Brit thing over the holidays, took place in late 1800s Imthink, and the maids had to empty the chamber pots of the household.
And I thought...what happens at big parties? Or restaurants? Did they have rooms full of chamber pots? Or banks of outhouses? They never show that.

you are referring to a monopoly, and generally monopolies are enforced by governments. Such abuses occur when the state sticks its thumb on the market to exclude competition through regulation seizure and taxation.
Such intervention is everyday and inescapable under Socialism by the way.
In a market or economy, generally what happens is that in the face of such massive potential for profits an entrepreneur (usually a whole class of them) finds another way of satisfying that need for whatever the product is. Barring government intervention to prevent it.
However you touch on a lot of interesting things here.
First of all, Rockefeller was asked for loans because, unlike the Federal Reserve he didn't mess up his accounts trying to keep the value of gold and silver even by legislative fiat, and so he had the ready cash and was in a position to bail out the Federal Reserve. That wasn't caused by capitalism, it was caused by populist push to inflate and support the inflated value of silver against gold.
Second, though oil, kerosene and gasoline were important, they were never a large section of the economy up through 1911 when Standard Oil was broken up. Very valuable, yes, but not essential like Maduro's control of the Venezuelan state oil company today. There was no real economic slavery going on, just better wages for areas that may not have had good local wages. I would expect that some of the company towns for the mining and lumber companies (and sharecropping farmers too) were more restrictive, but even then, it was better wages than could be found elsewhere opposed to actual economic slavery. Per my sources, Standard Oil actually decreased the price of oils and fuels while it was a "monopoly"; as a side note he single-handedly did more in twenty years to reduce the hunting of Sperm whales than Greenpeace has done in 50 be ending the demand for whale oil for illumination.
Now, for the hours worked, though such hours were not unusual in the last half of the 1800's, the heyday for such things was passing. Working your employees like that will cause you to loose them if there is anywhere else to go, or if they can get paid better doing the same work. In a period of minimal capital investment, in that there are only a few factories or there are barriers to workers traveling to better employment such hours are typical, but when factories are competing for limited labor, the conditions hour and pay get better.
As an aside, sweat shops are considered an anathema because of the dangerous conditions, hard work and long hours worked. However, I have heard of researchers going to sweatshops in Central America and asking the workers if they would go to another factory and work for less money for better conditions, and the workers almost always said they wouldn't since they wanted the money. To reduce their hours and so reduce their wages would have been considered a punishment or undue restraint on their earning power.
And you also mention child labor. And I will guess you didn't pick beans any more than I did as a child, but you probably picked strawberries. I know you didn't work in a factory at the age of because as a 10 year old you didn't know how to weld or sweat couplings and use a press-break. If we were born in the 20's we might have found work in a cotton mill or a brewery, but that time has long passed.
Child labor is considered low quality labor, and is preferable only because it is incredibly cheap. Throughout history children have worked on farms, in harvests, in mills and in industry when there is a high need for untrained labor; every hand was needed and wages for untrained labor is low. As such the child laborer also acted as part of the income of the family. This generally happens in societies with low capital investment: fewer machines, less technology means greater need for untrained or unskilled labor, and such labor is poorly compensated. As investment increases and manufacture becomes more advanced there is a greater need for trained and skilled workers, and less for untrained, unskilled labor like children. This is why child labor disappears, not because it is good, but because there is a reduced need for that sort of labor, and there is greater incentive for children to stay in school and get trained for the increasing number of higher paying, skilled labor positions.
I would also point out that in the societies that use lots of child labor in manufacturing the difference between the child working and the child not working is the margin of economic survival for the families. These are marginal people in a marginal society. Without factory jobs the children might have to find other ways to make money. Crime is one of the options.
This also begs for someone to ask the really important question that Marx and Engels never got around to: If the factory work is so dirty, dangerous and degrading, why do those deplorables all flock to do it, and live in horrible urban slums to boot?
Generally it is because this work was better paying, more regular throughout the year, and less demanding than working in the country. Also it provided better options for your children through specialization of trades, increased opportunity and breaking down of traditional roles. Piers the ploughman's kids probably were also ploughman, generation after generation. They guy who worked a spinning jenny had kids that could become firemen on a train, or work in a brewery, or learn to make shoes, or become a manager in the woolen mill.

And I never notice it. The trouble is you know what you want it to say, not what you've actually typed. Best thing is to put it away for a while, then come back. I'll catch more errors that way.

We put beautiful people in movies, and directors talk about authenticity, but women wake up in the morning with full faces of make-up, and in the old Westerns and European period pieces, everyone has teeth.
Same with the Middle East movies. Those people didn't have good chompers b/c the sand was in everything, like the food, and ground them down. But the movies show even the slaves with full sets of teeth.
I guess I'm becoming more aware of how much we don't get shown and how it colors our view of the past subconciously.

The more the left runs around with their hair on fire over Global Warming!!! the more I prepare for colder, snowier winters. I bought an inexpensive 46" plow blade and chains for my garden tractor a couple of months ago. Five snow storms later and I love it.
One pass down the driveway, turn around, come back and that's sufficient. It could be done in five minutes, but it's kinda fun. So I spend more time than necessary.
Not sure it would work so great on a thirty degree grade. You could push down, but it might be a battle to push back up.
