Trump Opens Nearly All US Waters to Offshore Drilling

High energy.

The Trump administration will allow new offshore oil and gas drilling in nearly all United States waters, it announced Thursday. The plan would give the energy industry broad access to drilling rights in most parts of the outer continental shelf, including Pacific waters near California, Atlantic waters near Maine and the eastern Gulf of Mexico.

The proposal lifts a ban on drilling, imposed by President Barack Obama in his final days in office, that protected more than 100 million offshore acres along the Arctic and Eastern Seaboard. Such a reversal deals a serious blow to Mr. Obama’s environmental legacy and signals that the Trump administration is nowhere near done unraveling the environmental restrictions of its predecessor in an effort to promote domestic energy production....

"We're embarking on a new path for energy dominance in America, particularly on offshore," Ryan Zinke, the interior secretary, said Thursday as he unveiled the plan. "This is a clear difference between energy weakness and energy dominance. We are going to become the strongest energy superpower."

Trump may not be a "real conservative," whatever that means anymore. (It seems to mean rather little.) But he's doing things that the establishment-credentialed "real conservatives" would never, ever do.

Trump is not a political person in the traditional sense. When you realize that conservatism is not a political ideology but a way of life, i.e. human nature lived with enlightened self interest, Trump is only doing what all human beings do instinctively.

You can perhaps argue about the particulars here and there, but he is a conservative by nature.

You have nearly no idea.

Just to build the TAPS, it took over 15 years of litigation and filing of an "environmental impact statement," which was itself the target of lawsuits. They feared that the pipeline would destroy the caribou herds, among other idiocies.

The caribou like the pipeline because, some parts of it keep the ground a few degrees warmer, so the ground cover comes up a couple of days sooner in the spring.

But that, of course, was not the point.

ANWR has been locked up for years (not anymore, thank God).

My step-dad, a couple of years before the election, kept pounding away at how Trump should run for President. Then when Trump got into the race, my step-dad told everyone and anyone that ONLY TRUMP CAN FIX THIS!

I was not on the Trump-train and often told my step-dad that Trump was going nowhere. We'd get into heated conversations. Still, step-dad insisted.

By the time Trump won, my step-dad had slipped into Alzheimer's, and never realized Trump had won. He doesn't even know who the president is.

For one moment, just one - I wish he could know that he was right. I could slap myself.

People who forecast doom for 2020 because of all the leftist millennials forget that people's viewpoints can change - especially as their memories of what Professor Commie said in Racism 101 grow dimmer. This is embarrassing, but my first presidential vote was for Carter - in 1980, when I was still in college. If someone who was as knee-jerk liberal as I was then can end up doing a 180, there is hope for the millennials. Their POV has been shaped not only by their profs and creatures like Stewart and Colbert, but by their fact they were told for 8 years that their poor prospects were "the new normal." If they start to realize that that was wrong, they might just have an awakening. (Well, the smarter ones will. The diehard SJWs will probably be as commie at 70 as they are now, just as there are baby boomers who never got over 1968.)

You have no idea. The Russkies are even more dependent on oil than the Saudis. Drive the price of crude low enough (around the level it bottomed out at not long ago) and the Russians can't break even and their economy collapses. Reagan did basically this in the 80's.

AK fishermen got a yuuuuuge payout settlement, of course. There was a fair amount of hand-wringing and whining. So, the fisherman all got to do that. And the media had a field day, but you will notice that the videos of birds stuck in goo amount to about three separate items. There just weren't enough to photograph.

Oil seeps out of the sea floor around here. Not in huge amounts, but enough. You see an occasional tar ball on the beach. It always has. One good winter and it all scrubs back down, naturally.

Nobody can point to a single thing that has been destroyed in Prince William Sound. They couldn't find evidence of the spill two year out from it.

As it turns out, oil is a naturally occurring substance, defying the cries of the environmentalists, because nature deals with it just fine.

I mean I don't remember Trump following through on his legal threats against Allred's actresses, so there's probably some reason for the disparity in his response.

376 tcn, exactly. The Santa Barbara spill was very similar. Lots of natural oil seeps there, too (at UCSB the dorms have buckets of mineral spirits and rags at ever door - when you come back from the beach, you have to scrub the tar patches off the soles of your feet). The non-native Native Americans (Chumash?) in the area, of course, incorporated the tar as a binding material in building and crafts for generations, long before the oil age.

As I noted during the horrendous Ventura fire, the state hwy (150) along which it all started, up near Santa Paula, has seeps of oil coming out of the road cut, and oil flowing down gutters on the hill-side of the road. Only place I've seen that.

417 NCJ, I think SCOTUS has to be the main player on gun nonsense.

As it stands today, the circuits are in revolt, and have over-ruled Heller/SCOTUS. Pretty astonishing situation. I don't think the language of the 4th circuit ruling on the MD gun law could be described as anything other than a rejection of Heller. The SCOTUS decision not to hear the appeal surely must be based on internal political/vote-counting considerations.

But CA is nearly certain to leap through the gap created by the 4th's mutiny, and SCOTUS's acquiescence, soon. And probably up the ante (I'm guessing full ban on *all* semi-auto rifles).

The situation with the 2A is really a scandal, and makes the constitution kind of farcical, along with the judicial branch. Ridiculous, make-believe "rights" have been imposed on society by SCOTUS for years - in the process shredding the central values and precepts of the constitution - yet clear violations of a key express right are simply ignored. Heller and MacDonald put a stop to that - of sorts.

But now the lawless federal judiciary is saying "hold my kombucha, and watch this" by defying SCOTUS, with impunity.

There are no longer courts, there are just mini unaccountable super-legislatures. So, all that matters is getting your "votes" on them. Until SCOTUS has at least one, and probably two, new "votes", er, "justices", the jaw-dropping lawlessness WRT the 2A will continue.

Eh, just heard on radio news Trump saying "DACA deal *must* include end to chain migration and visa lottery" (in addition to funding/building the wall, which he has said repeatedly) - think he would veto if the GOPe screws him over on all three demands?

I think he might, given how many times he's said he will build a wall - no way he lets them take that away.

Posted by: jsg at January 04, 2018 03:11 PM (yczzc)

My guess is probably not all that much.

Fracking supplies natural gas mostly, mostly for energy production (power plants) and a little bit of petrochemical.

Offshore i think is mostly for gas/diesel liquid fuels, mostly for transportation networks, again with a little bit of petrochemical use, but more from the byproducts of distillation.

Different products for different markets, even though it's all "petroleum".
