Why should we give a flying fuck what the rest of the world thinks? The rest of the world hates us mostly for the following reasons:
We're richer than they are.
We're one of the few places in the world where a person can get rich by working harder and smarter than others, without having to suck government bureaucrat cock.
We can live anywhere we choose within our own borders, up to the limits of our pocketbook, without a residence permit (90% of Europe, I'm looking at you).
Our military could crush any other nation on earth if we chose to do so (even after 8 years of Chocolate Fonzie dorking the military in the squeekhole).
Virtually every important technological innovation in the last 50 years comes from the US.
We have more freedom than any other nation in the world (I don't give a fuck what those various Freedom Indexes say).
We're mostly a Christian nation (which is WHY we have more freedom than anywhere in the world).
For good or ill, virtually all popular culture in the world comes from the US (to be fair, they might have a point here).
They hate us because they are NOT Americans, and because they're too lazy, bigoted and uncivilized to embrace the strengths of the American System and pull themselves up by their own bootstraps.
Envy, in a word.

Yes, let's just sit on our hands and let the world's #1 sponsor of terrorism, on the road to developing nukes and exporting that tech to the NorKs, who believe and want Armageddon against us stay in power and crush a population that hates Islamic fundamentalism.

Two years ago this coming January I was at a trade fair in Dubai that had attendees from all over the region including Iranians. Virtually all of them were dressed in western clothes and were quite personable even with us Americans.
They were practically begging us to do business with them and we had to keep telling them that it was illegal for us to do so. They weren't angry at us, they were angry at their own government for making that the case.

Let me refresh your memory. The wars in Iraq had nothing to do with locals protesting against their governments. It had to do with Islamic nuts flying planes full of Americans into buildings and killing thousands of Americans.

You touched on something important there. Back when Hollywood was making Jimmy Stewart and John Wayne movies, they made plenty of people in foreign countries want to emulate Americans. Jazz music became popular around the world, including behind the Iron Curtain.

Getting a patent with meaningful coverage* is not easy. It generally entails multiple go-arounds with the patent examiner, who typically will reject all claims out of hand, and has to be talked into granting some smaller subset of them. Think audit by IRS, with the IRS auditor playing the role of the patent examiner, and you've got the idea.
* re "meaningful coverage" I mean something non-trivial. It's easy to get a patent if you narrow the claims to the point of insignificance, e.g., claiming the process X after having eaten a pastrami sandwich on rye and washed it down with root beer.
To infringe a claim, you have to meet every limitation of the claim, so you could practice process X after eating a pastrami sandwich but washing it down with Coke, and you do not infringe.
That's what I mean by "meaningful coverage."

Not quite what I meant. The number of claims is irrelevant. Claim structure is typically an inverted pyramid, starting with the broadest claim you think you're entitled to, and concluding with the narrowest claim(s) you think are worth bothering with.
In infringement litigation one or more of the claims may be asserted. Broad claims catch more, but may inadvertently read on the prior art, and thereby be invalidated in litigation. Ideally the patent examiner would have caught the relevant prior art, and asserted it against the claim, but they're human, working under time pressure, and sometimes miss things.

Re enforcing them, some litigators will take some infringement actions on a contingency basis (obviously if they think you have a very strong case).
And some corporations, etc. will take a license when threatened just to avoid the hassle and expense of litigation. David v. Goliath tends to engender sympathy for David by judges and juries unless David does this kind of crap routinely ("patent troll").

He had a responsibility to stop their nuclear expansion yet did nothing. I can understand if he didn't want to do anything during the 2008 presidential election campaign but once that was over he had more than two months and did nothing.
W was ultimately a huge disappointment.

It looked pretty clear to me at the time. Iran was supplying, and sometimes planting, the EFP that killed hundreds of our men. Bush knew where they were built and by who and did fucking nothing. Nothing.

I see your point. Just not sure what could have been done. We enjoyed 27 seconds of national unity following the attacks of September 11. After that, it was all, "Bush is Hitler!" b.s. for the next eight years. Democrats who voted in support of the Iraq War simply revised history through their lying MFM mouthpieces, proclaimed Bush a bigot and warmonger, indicted America, slandered every American soldier in harm's way, and mouthed whatever propaganda necessary to bolster America's enemies.
We are not one nation. Half of us absolutely HATE the other half, and wish to witness the complete destruction of the "United" States.

With the Patriot Act, I learned a hard lesson about giving government this kind of power. The Patriot Act may not have been as malevolent under Bush, but in the hands of the completely unscrupulous, it has been.

Yes, we had long occupations of Germany and Japan, but that was after we had flattened them and dictated peace terms, and what their new governments should look like. Both Iraq and Afghanistan adopted constitutions which respected sharia law. That should never have been allowed, any more than letting the Nazis have a voice in the Bundestag in 1948.

Wasn't a question of a "3rd war" being "started". Iran has been at war with us since '79 - but that's not even the sense in which I mean it. The war was on in Iraq. Much could have been done that wasn't. Without a "new", or recognized, war.
Iran was operating totally covertly, that is to say quite brazenly in a "badly kept secret" sort of way. They were, and would have been, under the same muzzle if we had hit them hard - discreetly - back over the border.
But - not the case that nothing was done. Task Force Black was out hunting down "special groups" - Iranian/Pasdaran advisors/operatives - every night. Had some success. But it was a half-measure, and a squandering of the perfect opportunity to ramp up the pressure on Iran even more, and hurt them. And some here might even have had first-hand experience with the fury and frustration resulting from the lack of dramatic escalation following confirmation of Iranian fingerprints on the deadliest IEDs.
And it's pretty simplistic and unserious to blame Bush for the nuke program. His administration, as I noted earlier today, ramped up and improved the sanctions regime, and did other things, that were the most effective steps to weaken and isolate Iran since they started the war in '79.
A military solution to the nuke program was very uncertain on the practical level, obviously very dicey on the geopolitical level. So a possible path not followed, but not some obvious or easy solution that was simply ignored.
So, in summary - yes, the response to Iranian intervention in Iraq was woefully inadequate; no, it wasn't "nothing", not even close; no, doing a lot more would not have meant a new war, either politically or practically; and no, the Bush admin. cannot be reasonably blamed for the Iranian nuke progress simply because the ultimate option of a military strike was not used.
But the lights over the reloading bench need fixing, and I am not up to the quixotic task of battling a blizzard of (slightly, sometimes) erroneous premises from every possible angle, so, off I go.

I was a member of the Libertarian Party back in the late 90s. The Patriot Act was a collection of measures the Libertarians had been opposing for years, all rolled up into a ball, tied with a bow, and rammed through Congress in one fell swoop because "crisis".
