I think it was the Crimean War. But in the Great Unpleasantness of 1861-65, as I recall they added telegraph for real-time reporting to the officers on the ground.

The last Canadian aircraft carrier was HMCS Bonaventure, which was decommisioned in the 1960's. Ironically, that was immediately after an expensive refit. It was used with fixed wing jet aircraft, even though it was under-sized for the role. I believe that France is the only country besides the US that curently operates a catapult equipped aircraft carrier (the Chuck de Gaulle).
I believe that the phote shows a snow goose rather than a Canada goose, so the symbolism it a bit watered down.

I think the reason it's struggling at the box office is, at most, only partly because of the SJW messaging. I think it has more to do with 1) there's no "the wait is over" hype this time, as there was with The Force Awakens, 2) apart from Luke, neither the characters nor the plot are that memorable, which is really eating into repeat viewings. The SJW stuff is there, but I think people would be overlooking that and continuing to watch if the characters and the plot were better.

Went to the concert. It was incredible. They took a giant tuning fork, hit it, and put the base of the tuning fork on the stage. The whole building vibrated. Of course, a few years later, they found stress cracks in the arena. (no idea how they got the whole building to resonate like they did, but it was a hoot)

There is a yuuge Amazon warehouse near me. They pick, box and load the orders as they come in and, as quickly as possible, load them into either one of their own semi trailers, or directly into a UPS/FEDEX 53 ft trailer (or a USPS trailer). In the case of UPS, as soon as it is full, the trailer is driven to the UPS distribution point on the other side of town where it is unloaded, sorted, and reloaded onto the appropriate UPS trailer to move the packages on down the line. There are dozens of trailers Amazon has loaded every day that are driven over to the UPS facility.
We are a mid sized city - but to give you an idea of the volume, UPS handled over 500,000 packages, from our mid sized distribution point alone, two days before Christmas.

In fairness to the Founders, I don't think anyone in their generation, at the national, state, or local level, anticipated the possibility that the judiciary could become the most powerful branch of government. The assumption back then was that the federal government's duties would mostly have to do with defense, revenue, and arbitrating disputes between member states, so there was no conception of a Court ruling on the things it now does. It was our great misfortune to get saddled with John Marshall as Chief Justice.
It's been my opinion for a while now that our only real recourse with the judiciary is to elect state and local officials who will refuse to comply with their orders. Private individuals should obviously get that into their head, too, but that will only go so far if their elected officials aren't also shielding them. If the actual impotence of the courts could be put on display, that would change a lot.

The fundamental problem is to reign in the courts would take congress restricting the jurisdiction of the inferior courts and the legislative and executive teaming up and telling the SCOTUS to go pound sand or an article V convention and adopting Levin's amendment suggestions.
Both of these scenarios are unlikely.

If Amazon, or their shipping contractors, are concerned about packages rolling around loose in the back of cargo vans, why not equip the vehicles with huge airbags attached to the inside of the roof, and provided with two-way blowers to inflate them to gently restrain the cargo while under way, and to deflate them when stopped to take on or discharge cargo?

If Amazon, or their shipping contractors, are concerned about packages rolling around loose in the back of cargo vans, why not equip the vehicles with huge airbags attached to the inside of the roof, and provided with two-way blowers to inflate them to gently restrain the cargo while under way, and to deflate them when stopped to take on or discharge cargo?

I think it's pretty obvious what's going on. This Imam was pro-Jewish pro-Israel until Trump turned him into an anti-semite. Trump's ability to create and spread toxic hate is alarming. Something must be done about this man before he incites Muslims to commit another terrorist attack.

Swimming weather!
Did the Penguin Plunge when I lived in Rhode Island. Hung over on Jan 1st, getting down to a swim suit and a bow tie, squawking like a penguin as you waddle into the bay. Good times ... Everything was okay as I went in waist deep. When I dove in fully, though ... whoa Nelly!
Yeah ... it was cold. But it was fun.

Yeah, when I was young the cold never bothered me. I rarely wore gloves and could be outside in winter in a t-shirt with no problems. Now ... I bundle up like Nanook before I step outside in sub-freezing temps and I try to get back inside as quickly as I possibly can.

I was in New York in the winter and it was 20 degrees. I have never felt so cold in my life. I don't know how anyone deals with that. I was freezing. Then when we arrived at wherever we were going I kept dropping my glove, I had a heavy coat, hat. Also, I was hot in the museums.
My husband says I'm high maintenance, I kept dropping my scarf or a glove, he always found them though.

Not really, no. Was disappointed. He lost what made Reed for me. From 85 on, he just didn't rock anymore. Lyrics still good, but he mellowed too much. Plus, he started to lose his voice. My humble theory is that while he was fucked up, he rocked. When he went straight, he got a rush of creativity and energy producing arguably his best work, from The Blue Mask to New Senations... but, that ebbed away and he got bored or something.

Was watching a TCU home game on TV a few years ago. It wasn't a Chamber of Commerce day in Ft. Worth. Cold, windy, and a combo rain/sleet/ice. Those TCU cheerleaders still looked gorgeous and they had been in those elements the whole game.

There was already a very similar word in Spanish, too - which is the one that Edison allegedly transformed for "hello".
But "hello" was an entirely new word and usage. It was a new situation in which people needed to have a verbal greeting for someone they didn't know and couldn't see - which had not been an issue for any culture up through that point (since nothing like the telephone existed).

I've told this story before, but I'll tell it gain because I'm annoying that way and I think the story is funny. I was at a clergy Conference with a Bishop who came here from Southern India. He was a Bishop in Western NY. He said ( (imagine an Indian accent here) "When i was a pastor in Western NY one of the Congregation members said, "Would you like to come out on the lake in the hut for some ice fishing?" and i agreed. It was not a good experience. I am from Southern India. We do not have ice or ice fishing in Southern India. I did not go ice fishing again." He said it in such a deadpan way I laughed so loudly that people around me turned to stare at me.

When it's *reeeaaaallly cold* out, I LOVE fleece-lined leggings. Nice and toasty. Plenty of colors and patterns!(They're also great under jeans for casual wear and working outside. Better than "long johns" imo.)
I buy the cheapo stretchy knit gloves (black) by the dozens of pairs-- they're ambidextrous, so when they wear out or get lost, just grab another one and you're good-- also good for insulation under another pair of gloves, even can wear one pair over another pair... can put a 'heat pack' between them if ya want...
Yeah, it's been cold here lately with lots of snow. Had to shovel every day this week.

Absolutely. Back when I was a mere teen in a garage band, we took that whole thing on as a cover and worked and worked on it... with 3 guitars. Don't know of anyone else that attempted it (well, way back then in the 70's). Always remembered us as being pretty amateurish and patchy, but listened to old recordings recently for the first time in 30 years. We Crushed it. No wonder we made the jump from garage to pro so quickly. Hard work pays off, even if you suck!

- I had forgotten the early 80's thing of doing a short preview of the plot of the episode at the beginning of the show. It is annoying.
- Why do so many shows, when they want to show something taking place during the 40's, play Moonlight Serenade? And I love Moonlight Serenade, but there was more music from then that was just as good.

WD (long gone to bed), didja know that just today, I received probably my last online ammo shipment evah (long as I live in the PR of Kalifornistan), and ..... it was two lonely little 50-round boxes of .380 - in a box that could have held a case thereof (20 50-round boxes). As if to mock or torment me.
But it's "self defense" ammo, and already have some, so 100 rounds is plenty for my purposes.
Reasons for "last evah" is new, ridiculous harassment, er, "law" that takes effect next Monday, making online ammo purchases a hassle. And I reload most everything anyway.

Well, it does, until it doesn't. 4WD helps prevent the wheels from locking, individually, because if one is turning, they all have to. So if you brake gently, short of locking the wheels, the 4WD acts sort of like anti-lock, and helps keep you from going sideways. If you jam on the brakes, they all lock, and you skid.
I find an automatic is better if you have to rock your vehicle out of a rut in the snow. The old cars with the PNDLR were aces at that.

I think your theory supports the Hungarian "I hear" thesis. When you are an early adopter of the telephone, "I hear you" is a good neutral way to answer a phone. As people use a noncommittal "Speaking" sometimes today.
As a side note, "Ahoy" did take in one place. In Czech today, "Ahoj" (in Czech spelling) can mean hello, but more commonly "cheers/bottoms up!".

Sure, someone might pick up the phone and say "Joe speaking" but that is very unusual. People don't tend to offer up their identities to an unknown. Now, with everyone having caller-id and phones listing names as they call, a lot of this stuff might change, but I would say that that initial anonymity was the situation for the first 100+ years of the phone.
On second thought I can see your point with answering a phone saying "I hear." but I have just never run into anyone who does that, or anything like that. My grandfather used to answer by saying "It's your dime." sometimes.

The person who picks up the phone says the first word. Before caller ID " I hear" is pretty logical. What do people say to let the caller know that the phone has been answered?

When I was in Israel we ran into a lot of South Africans and all the AMericans had problems understanding them, at first. When they said "just now" (which they used, a lot) they didn't actually mean "just now" ... they meant "pretty much never". It took us a little bit to figure this out.
That was also when I learned that the Brits and South Africans said "pissed" for "drunk". Before that I had only ever said "pissed" for "mad". There was a little confusion until this got ironed out, especially since we were all drinking quite a bit at the time (though the Brits drink quite a bit all the time, from what I could gather).

We saw "All the Money in the World". Don't do that. It's a very not good movie. You can't tell what it's about. You have no idea whose story it is. Things happen and they keep happening for 2 1/2 hours. There is no point.
It's edited with quick cuts except there are no chase scenes. It can't even make Rome look pretty, and it takes a lot to not make Rome look pretty.
It's a two and a half hour exercise in introspection: why am I here, why did I give these people money, do they have a point, any point at all with which I can agree or argue? Why am I here.
This is a very bad not very good movie that's worse because it's not even awful, it's just there.

That may have happened on its own. We know that a number of microscopic organisms can survive for extended periods in space. There's even microbes that live on the surface of the International Space Station. There's also the controversial "worm fossils" from that Martian meteor.
It's not impossible that life gets pushed from world to world, and system to system by such means.
We may find, once we get out, that all life uses the same chemical building blocks, due to this, and environments similar to ours may result in some remarkable cases of convergent evolution.

Linda Molton Howe had the humdinger of this alien stuff all compiled one time. I remember reading it. It's sort of an expansion of Sitchin. Same basic premise, but much more involved. Quite a doozy.

Not quite. The movie was based on the notion that the Gulf Stream would, essentially, disappear first (from melting ice lowering the salinity of the Atlantic, I believe) which is what set off all the dire events.
As far as I'm aware, the Gulf Stream is still alive and well.
The Day After Tomorrow was a horrible shit show of a movie ... but it had pretty nice effects and Emmy Rossum was cute as hell. Jake Gylenhall or whatever the hell his name is, was the most annoying, stupid retarded douchenozzle of a character. But I did get a kick out of the way the movie tried to portray lefties as being such rugged individualists and having such strong aversions to any sort of collectivism. LOL. That was a real hoot.

That movie was fun.
All disaster films are ludicrous, and all films require a suspension of reality. This one assumed a replay of sorts of the Lake Agassiz disaster and the climate event of 8200 years ago. That's the premise; it doesn't have to be realistic.
Heck, "King Ralph" had a silly premise, but once you accept it as the premise you can enjoy a fun movie.

I enjoyed "The Day After Tomorrow" too. Climate porn. I just had to see it to pick it apart. I loved the part about walking from Philly to New York in snowshoes in a blizzard in mere hours. Yeah, right.
