For those who do so, please pray for my grandmom. She's my last living grandparent, any the littl'un's last living great-grandparent.
She's in her final hours, and received Last Rites already. It's going to be hard to sleep, but I'll probably turn in in less than an hour so I can be up to get my brother's call. He'll visit her tomorrow if she makes it through the night.
Sorry for the bummer, but I've no one else from myside of the family here in town.

Turns out we're not like other attorneys who use the answering service to pick up the phone when no one is in the office, oh no. My boss (who is an underling to the big boss, who has her name on the door) let me know we DON'T CARE if the phone never gets picked up while we're closed. We only use the answering service when no one can pick up the phone, during *regular business hours* it turns out.
She couldn't believe I didn't already know that. Yeah, I understand. EVERYTHING I KNOW IS WRONG.

They're good for arid conditions where other types may not flourish. They're built for growth in very dry conditions, so you can have a forest/cover/shade etc where otherwise you wouldn't. But they have no "off switch" due to their make up. Put them in a fertile zone with reliable water and they'll go crazy. They're kind of like the weeds of trees.

The good things? I got to watch the movie while seated in a leather recliner and not a single little kid acted up during the whole movie.
The bad things? If I took a shot every time they reused a line from the first three movies, I would have been drunk by the halfway point. If I had taken a shot every time they had recycled a scene from the original trilogy, I would have been dead due to alcohol poisoning halfway through the movie.
I do not plan to see Episode IX because of one simple reason. When it comes to this franchise you are very much like the current crop of Star Trek writers in your conceit that as long as the story babbles what the audience is used to experiencing it will be a success.

Sith apprentice turning on Sith master, again the second Death Star.
Once again AT-ATs plus other toys assaulting a Rebel base. Hoth anyone? Instead of snowspeeders, rickety skimmers. Turrets and trenches? Again Hoth.
Amazing how many troops the Rebels had at that base when they only had 400 at the start of the pursuit.
On the plus side I guess, the ice Fennecs of Hoth II don't smell like Tauntauns.

They've relaunched used first stages and used Dragon capsules before, but this was the first time they've launched both a used first stage and a used Dragon capsule on the same flight.
It was the first launch from SLC-40 at the Cape since that little oopsie in Sept. 2016.

The pad infrastructure has been rebuilt and improved since then. It has also been hardened so that a similar accident today would only take about three months to repair instead of over a year.
There were some gorgeous visuals in today's flight. It was a perfectly clear sky, so ground cameras could follow the first stage continuously from launch to landing.

This was also the 20th successful landing of the Falcon 9 first stage. The first one was on December 21, 2015, less than two years ago. It made headlines, and it was compared to 1950s science fiction come to life.

Space bombers where they pretty much all blow up, if any ONE of them blow up, no less. Pretty hilarious. And that's without thinking too much about the Physics of bombers (which DROP bombs) in a medium that has no gravity. It's easily the stupidest part of the movie - and really none of the movie made any sense.
SPOILERS...
But notice how desperately stupid they had to go, in order to discredit super-pilot guy ("Poe", maybe?), after he single-handedly launches an assault against a massive fleet of the bad guys, alone in his puny little fighter, and succeeds.
This Star Wars went totally feminazi. The bad guys are white males, generally older. The good guys are female/diverse. When the few males on the good guy team do something heroic, they're literally either stopped by a woman on their own side (who Knows Better), or derided for being some sort of a loose cannon. In one instance one of the women does the self-sacrifice thing, but when a man tries to do the exact same thing he's stopped - like he's being some macho idiot. There are entire sub-plots completely devoted to having the male good guys try some desperate thing - and fail - just to make them look bad! In any normal Star Wars movie, these crazy little schemes always run into trouble, but then miraculously work.
These brilliant women (who decline to even tell the men what's going on - for no reason) manage to get so many of their people killed that what's left of the entire Resistance easily fits inside the Millenium Falcon as passengers. The only male hero that gets a big moment is Luke, and that turns out to be a scam - then he somehow dies for no real reason. The whole plot surrounding HIM is idiotic, and even HE is lectured by our new female heroine for basically being a complete idiot.

I was diagnosed 6-7 years ago. Ablation shocked the A-Fib out but came right back. Cardiac catheterization luckily showed no blockage.
I can honestly say it has no noticeable impact on my life. Cardiologist says on bi-annual visits to stay as active as possible, keep weight under control, and all looks good.
I'm sure it is different for everyone, but I sincerely send all good wishes to you for great results. I stay very active and Have two friends in the club. One regularly bikes 40-50 miles and the other is my former masters swim coach who is like a shark in the water.

The general rule is that romance languages follow the use of syllabic meter in poetry, and Germanic languages use foot meter.
It is supposed to be because some languages have greater stress variation than others, but I suspect it has to do with what literary traditions the poetry looks back to. Romance languages and Japanese look to written forms in Latin and Chinese, and Germanic languages look back to oral traditions where the prosody and alliteration and rhyme was essential for memorization.
There are some indication that early Spanish epic poetry, like The Cid did use a form of foot meter, but it seems it is somewhat irregular.

I loved the original trilogy, read a ton of the books (sorry, "legends"), and was thoroughly let down by prequels 1-3.
I've seen one of the Disney Star Wars movies, and thought it was a more PC digitally re-mastered with new special effects A New Hope. Probably will get around to seeing the others, but... eh. I guess I'm back to "who cares?"

I must not remember the second set of movies very well, because while I did recognize certain lines, it wasn't like the last one where they literally had another Death Star, and literally blew it up (only this time without any one Hero using the force, or even not using the Force). Maybe I need a run-down on it. A lot of times I thought I was seeing some re-hash, it didn't go the way I expected.
But "hell, yeah" on the rest. I was going brutal on the feminazi stuff in another comment while yours popped up.

There is a series of books with a VERY strong Female Lead character..... that actually make SENSE as to why she can kick ass....
That will never be filmed by Hollywood... because the story is inherently pro military... and speaks coherently about the nature of Government...

Fantastic installment, that one. It featured one of the best "villains" the show ever had... Scorby with shifting alliances. Great foil for the doctor and Sarah and it was shame he was killed off. Could have been an excellent recurring troublemaker.

Levitation, which was kind of odd. They could have had the actors inside stick their legs through the bottom of the costume to walk up. They could be silver-spray painted to make them look like robot legs, although that might look too silly. In the Hartnell adventure the Web Planet, actors that were supposed to be giant ants (Zarbis) had their legs (painted black) clearly sticking out of the ant costumes. It was very hard to try to suspend disbelief there.

Fellow babies of the Horde, I can't believe this happened to me today, and it wasn't of the "Dear Penthouse" variety, but the "Dear 11 O'Clock News, Bleed 'N' Lead" type.
I'm still in a state of shock. But this afternoon, somewhere between 2 and 3PM, I was close to shooting man. Drawing and shooting. This ->
What happened. Well, long story, but my dear parents, bless their hearts, fell hook, line, and sinker for a classic bunko con man scam. It was the old "asphalt sealing" scam. Hey, we were just doing a big job over the way, had some sealant left over, noticed your driveway was in bad shape, and thought we'd just help you out.
The "sealant" is just diesel fuel/kerosene with some black shit in it. It will make the pavement look slick for a day or so, then wash off. They charge a big fee and run.
I got there, after running some errands, right in the middle of it. I realized what was going on. I called the sheriff and got some deputies on the way. I first tried the non-emergency number and got put on hold. I would likely still be on hold now. So, I went ahead and dialed 911. If they put in me jail for frivolous use, then so be it. I think to get the get the tag number of their vehicle, using binoculars.
I have to convince the gal that I'm "uneasy" and need to the law there. She gets them on the way.
I get my gun, my SandW 9mm. I stick it in the front of my pants, covered with my coat, which I leave unzipped.
The guy barges in the house, announcing he's through, and that'll be $1200, but he's gonna give dear old Dad a deal. $800 cash. And he'll ride with him to the bank.
I can't believe this happening. Long story, but it ends with me and him in a standoff of sorts. I'm getting ready to shoot him. He decides to leave. Thank God.
The cops get there after he's gone. Long story for the details, but I'm living a charmed life somehow.

Yep. For a one story character and not the main antagonist, he was very memorable. Partly due to the fantastic writing and partly due to the actor's chops. He was deliciously unpredictable... sometimes ruthless and dangerous, sometimes a life saver for the Doctor and Sarah. So much was great about that story, but they allwere back during that run.

It was high anxiety, that's for sure. This son of bitch was classic con man, good. I saw him using classic con man techniques.
When he was literally, as they say, going to take a near 90 yr old man "for a ride", well, it was a shitting your pants type of moment for me.
This was bad dude. Bad dude, as TGE would say, indeed. At that point, I thought about dropping all pretense, and ordering him out, or I was going to shoot him.
But, I wondered if he would the type who would take that as a challenge and see if I was willing to actually do that.
It was surreal. When he did the "take you to the bank thing", I just dropped into dumb, stupid, naive "good boy, but not swift in the head" mode. I said, "Nah, he can't go, but I'll go to the bank, but traffic in town is bad this time of day, so we'll wait a little bit and then go". Again, deputies were on the way, wait it out.
He'd said something about "Well, I've got something else I need to do, so let's go right now. Love to wait, but ain't got the time".
I said, "No, we're going to wait". That was the last words that were spoken. For a while. I never said another word to him, I don't think.
At the point, I was sizing him up, and he was sizing me up. I was standing a couple feet away from him. Again, this is surreal, and I'm trying to sort of pinch myself, "Is this real?".
I'm holding my right hand at about belt buckle level, inches from the pistol. At that point, I'm trying to calm myself, thinking I may have to shoot this son of a bitch. And I'm trying to keep myself calm, and trying to steel myself to do it if need be.
It would take me pages to describe the details, but I was in "line up the shot" mode. I was thinking about were the bullets were going to go in the house, and what might be damaged. There's a sub panel and some other shit around the den and closets I don't want to shoot.
I've never shot a man and am wondering what it's going to be like. Will these bullets go through, I think their hollow points (they were). I'm slowly moving trying to put the line of fire out the sliding glass door.
At that point, I'm sure I was giving off an intense vibe. I was wondering if he might he armed, hiding a gun somewhere. I looked him up and down.
If I had seen what I thought was some gun bulge, I would have pulled the trigger with the plan I'd made. But I didn't see it, and just stood there.
I wonder if he knows I'm armed. I guess it's obvious to him, with the odd moving slowly with hand right at the belt buckle.
I'm wondering if I can actually do it, or will I just shit my pants and pass out or something.
Again, I'm sure I was giving off an intense vibe. He was too. We were just staring at each other.
I was making the plan in my mind. I had picked out the point on his chest I was going to aim.
I was going through the firing procedure in my mind. Could I do this calmly or would I lose it. I was sort of close and I wondered if I made the move, would he jump and grab it. Could he.
So, I was going to, if I made the move, step back with my right leg, draw, fire, and then walk into him, firing some more.
At the point, he backed out. He said, "Oh I forget something, I'll be right back" -- something like that. He then backed out the door, jumped in the truck and high tailed it.

Yeah, it got a bit dicey even before T. Baker's run ended, though there were some good ones in there. Douglas Adams was doing some at that stage, IIRC. But that 75 to 76 run, in particular, like the 67 to 69 run, was an uninterrupted batch of awesomeness.

They had the license plate, and they were going to run it and see. It was Georgia plate. Who knows. It could've been fake, but it could be they were from Georgia, and came up here, far away from home, to run the scams.
This asphalt sealing/paving thing is a classic. From time to time, there's a rash of them. They move in, run it a few days, then get out. Sometimes they catch them, sometimes they don't.

But, having other non-lethal "tools" is a good thing. I'm reading parts of Branca's "LoSD" book ... he recommends having such "tools".

However justified you would have been drawing your weapon and shooting the con, by the time it's all said and done, you would, without question, have rather paid the $1200.

Imagine pacing, night after night, looking out the window of your parent's home. Again, I'm assuming you would have been justified in shooting . . . Do you want to defend yourself for years, in litigation, if the con were wounded? (You know he would sue, however much in the wrong he would have been. He would want an insurance settlement.)

Amen, brother. My behavior was based on having the following burned into me by older and wiser men, who had been there: "Don't show a gun unless you're going to draw it, and don't draw unless you're going to shoot."
My poor mother was bug eyed during that. She said she had realized it was a scam, but wasn't really scared until that "take you for a ride" thing. But she said, "My god, [publius], you were about to shoot him, weren't you?" She then hugged me, and said she was glad I was there to take care of them.
That sort of choked me up. My father, well he's not exactly hitting on all 8 cylinders, and I don't know if he knew how intense it was getting.
Again, I don't know if the SOB was armed or not. He had two 20 something yr old flunkies. I was wondering if they were armed, had he given them instructions, etc.
But they decided to run, it's over, and that's it. I'm still sort of in hyper-vigilant mode. In the back of my mind, I'm worried they might try to come back and retaliate.
Deputies said that wasn't likely, they didn't think. It could happen, but they didn't think they would. They're probably getting the hell out of Dodge, knowing the cops are looking for them.

The "bad dude" guy was likely about 50, my age. His two flunkies were in their '20s. I mean, rough guesstimate.
It's all over now, no sense in wondering, but I'm wondering if I should've gone the "drop the pretense" and ordered him the fuck out.
But I don't know. My gut was just to do nothing and wait until the cops got there unless he made a move.
And that's the thing, he seemed like he was happy to get in the stone cold staring contest with me.
I wonder if he was armed. Maybe it's better if I don't know.

Brother, in my Jeep, arrives home 'bout 9 P.M., and comes in the front door, only to meet me and my S&W Model 28, .357 Mag. Highway Patrolman, with a bead on the bridge of his nose.
Having proned him out on the living room rug, I withdrew the heretofore missing Charter .38 from his waistband, and instructed him to start packing, NOW.
Shortly thereafter, dropped him off just East of San Antonio on I-10 East, with his Springer Spaniel, to hitchhike to "wherever".
He ended up in Orlando, where he delivered untold grief to my Dad and Step Mom for a couple of years, before he disappeared Northward, out of the State of Florida.
Three years after, I was visited by agents of the FBI. They were looking for him for a series of bank robberies a bit North of San Antonio, in Austin.
Yep, he'd used my Charter for the deeds.
I helped them to find him, and he served eight years in Club Fed for the crimes.
And I won't narrate the other bank job that got him a second ride in the Club Fed Hotel. But, he did.
Point is this.

These scammers are organized. It is a known racket. And one of the the things they know, and are taught, is not to make big waves. Law enforcement is not really too concerned with scammers that "do some work" take cash, and vanish again. It's hard to prove fraud, if some work, regardless of how shoddy, was done. But if they resort to violence, or threats of violence, to collect payment for their "work", that crosses a line.
For them, why waste a day trying to collect from a family that won't be intimidated, when another two or three driveways can be "sealed" at $800 a pop, with risk of trouble?

I think it's clear that people like this have plans & contingencies. If you had had to shoot, at a minimum, the 2 youngsters would have lied their asses off, and you would be facing all sorts of legal trauma (see one or two previous posts by other commenters)
A couple of non-lethal tools, just in case, is not a bad idea.
I spent 2011-2016 (ended start of August) living next (i.e. separated by one (1) 2x4 stud wall from a clown selling weed. Nothing ever came through the wall, other than occasional noise and the smell of weed. The carport was another matter; he and his posse drank, smoked & transacted business there, essentially 11AM-11PM, every day.
No violence or overt threats, but many of his friends (expensive cars owned by unemployed 20-somethings with no visible means of support ... how?). Apparently, I've been living in a slum since at least 2011.
However, I had many "tools", "apparati", etc., strewn about my place, just in case one of them decided to accidentally forget to knock. Never happened, but now I (and many neighbors too, I found out) sleep better, as they are gone, and the situation is now only in my log book.

Years back when I was dating Mrs. Krebs, our son (actually my stepson, to be technically correct although I love him dearly as though he were my own flesh and blood) and I were visiting a store. He was a fifth or sixth grader and he triggered an alarm as we walked out. He went through the motions of saying he was clean and both the store staff and I bought the story. We get home and shortly thereafter, I notice that he has one or two brand new "Magic, the Gathering" booster card decks that he had opened but I knew he not been purchased by him during our excursion. I corralled the future Mrs. Krebs and we confronted him. Turned out he had shoplifted the cards and the triggered alarm had been for real. We had him bundle up the purloined items and I drove him back to the store to confess his guilt and return the cards. The store staff appreciated the gesture and declined to press charges, much to the youngun's relief. On the way back home I told him that had they searched him, found the cards after the alarm triggered, I would have had no legal standing to assist him at that time and he very well might have been hauled off and, in fact, I would have applauded the move. Wide-eyed, he promised me that he would never do such a thing ever again.
And he hasn't.
I'm thinking, now that he is a father himself, of revisiting this story with him during one of our lunches together, both to see what he remebers as well as to remind him, gently, of what lessons he is responsible for imparting to his own offspring.

That's assuming you were justified. 1. When you shoot someone, do not wound him. That scenario--wounding rather than terminating--will be even more of a nightmare, in every respect. You must assume that you're shooting to kill. 2. The legal fees you would have garnered, in explaining to the police, let alone justifying, a homicide, would have surpassed $1200 on day one. Even if you simply discharged your weapon, without pointing it at anyone at all, you would have imperiled yourself with law-enforcement. And shooting someone is thoroughly traumatic, and complicated, and involved, and relentless, and EXPENSIVE; it's a horror. That's assuming the police are on your side. 3. Had you shot the con, you would have had the decedent's relatives, friends, family to deal with, and a conman does not live with saints.
Imagine pacing, night after night, looking out the window of your parent's home. Again, I'm assuming you would have been justified in shooting . . . Do you want to defend yourself for years, in litigation, if the con were wounded? (You know he would sue, however much in the wrong he would have been. He would want an insurance settlement.)

Ain't never pulled a gun nor had one pulled on me.
I did have a thing where I had to rush into a dark stairwell where what sounded like child abuse was happening. (There were neighbors yelling down "what's happening, is a child being abused down there", which was of course very helpful).
It was a guy abusing his wife, the kid was just screaming, and he was big but kind of doughy and there wasn't much drama in holding him until the cops came, but I didn't know that nor what I was facing when I ran down the stairs.
So, the adrenaline hook...on the night of it was just a thing that happened. About three days later the cops called to get my story and I went through it and they said something about how most people wouldn't have done that and it was only after I hung up the phone that it all hit me and I started shaking.
