Quote of The Day

Quote I

“Most mainline Protestant churches are, to one degree or another, post-Christian. If they no longer seem disposed to converting the unbelieving to Christ, they can at least convert them to the boggiest of soft-left clichés, on the grounds that if Jesus were alive today he’d most likely be a gay Anglican bishop in a committed relationship driving around in an environmentally friendly car with an “Arms are for Hugging” sticker on the way to an interfaith dialogue with a Wiccan and a couple of Wahhabi imams.”
Mark Steyn

Failing to study Greek and Hebrew Swedish religious muckity-mucks continue to drag Christianity into the depths of political correctness. The Swedes want to be inclusive.

The Church of Sweden has voted to adopt a controversial new handbook which says masculine references to God, such as “He” and “Lord” should be scrapped so as to be more “inclusive”.
Despite heavy criticism from organisations including Royal Swedish Academy, on Thursday the church approved the new handbook with a large majority.

I guess the "Father, forgive them for they know not what they do" (Luke 23:24) was a mistake on His part.

Seriously, is it time, to bring back the good old fashioned Insane Asylum?

Jennings-White suffers from a rare psychological disorder called body integrity identity disorder, or BIID. People with BIID feel that their physical characteristics do not match the idea of how they are supposed to look. The condition is not dissimilar from gender identity disorder, which occurs when people feel that their physical sex does not correspond with the gender they identify with. In the case of BIID, most patients desire to have a specific body part amputated so that their bodies can match how they feel on the inside.

This woman is f*cking nuts.

Doesn't Justin Trudeau have more to worry about like Canadian bacon, Canadian Football and hockey than the US Net Neutrality act.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says President Donald Trump’s plan to roll back net neutrality protections for the internet “does not make sense” and that he’ll be looking into what he can do to defend net neutrality for the whole internet.

“I am very concerned about the attacks on net neutrality,” Trudeau said in Toronto on Wednesday, in response to a question from Motherboard about Trump’s plans. “Net neutrality is something that is essential for small businesses, for consumers, and it is essential to keep the freedom associated with the internet alive.”

The less government interference in our lives, the better.

Dammit! The earth is flat and Mike Hughes plans on proving it.

Seeking to prove that a conspiracy of astronauts fabricated the shape of the Earth, a California man intends to launch himself 1,800 feet high on Saturday in a rocket he built from scrap metal.

Assuming the 500-mph, mile-long flight through the Mojave Desert does not kill him, Mike Hughes told the Associated Press, his journey into the atmosflat will mark the first phase of his ambitious flat-Earth space program.

Here's hoping his life and health insurance premiums are paid up.

Do you like to bake? Do you like to taste test while you are preparing your baked goods? Raw flour may cause health problems.

Spoiler alert.

If you are already elbow-deep in holiday cake and cookie batter, you may just want to take your chances and stop reading here.

But to become wiser and safer, though indisputably annoyed, step away from that bowl and read on.

Tasting uncooked foods made with flour can make you dangerously ill, according to a study published Wednesday in The New England Journal of Medicine. The report, which recounts the detective work that led to a recall of more than 10 million pounds of flour in the summer of 2016, confirms that a type of E. coli bacteria previously discovered lurking in wet environments like hamburger meat and leafy vegetables can also thrive in arid hosts.

Well. That news certainly sucks.

The ONT has added another 'ette to the Moron Horde roll. Don't ever mess with a woman who is hunting.

And at one point, one of the saboteurs got a bit too close for comfort to a woman hunter on horseback. Way too close.

Video shows the saboteur grabbing the woman’s horse by the reins — but she wasn’t about to take one bit of his antics.

As she ordered the man to “get off my horse,” the woman repeatedly whipped the saboteur with her riding crop — a total of 17 vicious whacks.

The ONT Musical Interlude

November 26, 1976, The Band made their final performance; 'The Last Waltz' held on American Thanksgiving Day, at Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco. The show also featured Joni Mitchell, Dr John, Neil Young, Van Morrison, Neil Diamond, Eric Clapton and others. The event was filmed by director Martin Scorsese and made into a documentary of the same name, released in 1978. via thisdayinmusic.com

I think they are all dead now, except Robbie Robertson.

Robbie's a good guitar player, but he was about the most pretentious of the group.
In a Clapton documentary, Clapton actually approached Levon Helm about joining The Band, after Cream had broken up. He really liked their sound, and wanted to be a part of it.

28 Researchers have determined that the only safe way to prepare beef is for it to be flash frozen directly at the slaughterhouse, and then kept in frozen conditions until ready to use.

After much testing, researchers state authoritatively that food safety can only be assured if the beef is taken from the freezer, placed in a cold skillet and then heated until the internal temperature reaches 212 degrees Fahrenheit and held there for a minimum of 15 minutes. Should the internal temperature fall below 212 degrees Fahrenheit at any time during the cooking process, the timer should be reset and the meat held at or above that temperature for the required time.

Next week, there will be released the definitive study on cancer risks of overcooked animal protein and fats.

33 We're going to have to wait on finding out if the earth is flat or not.

Hughes was originally planning to conduct his experiment over Amboy, a ghost town situated along Route 66 in California, that has a population of 4. However, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) reportedly informed him that he cannot launch his scrap metal rocket on public land.

According to Hughes, the federal agency told him his experiment was a no-go, but Samantha Storms, BLM spokeswoman, said she was unaware of any communication between the self-taught rocket scientist and the agency.

94 I missed the movie thread as usual, but got a good nap in.

Interstellar is maybe the most ambitious movie in recent years. Christopher Nolan decided that Kubrick was the giant on whose shoulders he would stand. I admire his ambition and his sensitivity to make movies that will be remembered. The guts of a guy who wants to riff on 2001 A Space Odyssey.

Luc Besson I guess suffers unfairly for the comparison. He is entertaining and quite good. When I saw Lucy I reflected on the fact that Besson was about 13 when 2001 A Space Odyssey came out. Now he comes to the twilight of his career, and maybe he wants to come back around to the thing that inspired him.

Always had heard of him and heard some of his music but had never seen a

Posted by: cfo mom at November 25, 2017 10:10 PM (RfzVr)

No "was" about it. He is still alive and performing. I saw him, circa 1980, one of the first concerts in the then brand spanking new Max Singer Concert hall in Calgary, Alberta. Friend had connections, and we got front-row seats. Dr. John, on stage, him and a grand piano. The sound system breaks down. He comes to the edge of the stage, and says, "They tell me this hall has some amazingly good acoustics (it does), would y'all mind if I just play and sing without the mike? Crowd: cheers wildly. So that's what he did, sat at the piano and played and sang, and smiled, for two full hours. It was awesome.

Can I recommend an album? Look for "Dr. John plays Mac Rebennac". It's a 2-CD all acoustic set, with many purely instrumental tunes on it.

241 As a former Crown Vic owner, I can attest to the copious volume of trunkage in said vehicle.

CAFE standards be damned, that's a car that should've been updated and remain on the market.

Sure, they'd have to ditch the body-on-frame architecture and modernize from bumper to bumper, but that wouldn't really be tough to do.

Take the Mustang platform, stretch the wheelbase to 4-door proportions. The Mustang is about as wide as a Vic, so that's not a worry.

Styling could be pretty much traditional, late version Vic, but with more modern, angular lines. Would want it to look nothing like it's Mustang core though.

Power? 3.5 Eco-Boost, twin turbine power. It's a MONSTER engine, but still good on gas. Put one of the newer seven or eight speed automatic transmissions behind it. Keep the Mustang's Independent Rear Suspension.

Do the Uni-Body in High Strength Steel with some Aluminum panels such as the hood and trunk lid.

You'd end up with a +30 mpg, five or six seat sedan, with state-of-the-art power, handling, brakes and safety features.

Betcha it'd sell like hotcakes. And be a Mercedes-Killer in the bargain.

315 Here's what I think is a pretty ideal wedding: In a couple of weeks am performing a marriage for a couple in their 50's. They are getting married at the house they will be living i., There are going to five people at the wedding-the bride and groom, two friends who are witnesses and me. Afterwards we are having lunch. They are Christian Scientists which don't have clergy. Mary Baker Eddy wanted clergy to perform the weddings so they wouldn't seem like fly by night things, and the bride was at a wedding service I conducted for another Christian Science couple several years ago. They are having readings from the Old and New Testaments and "Science and Health" which is the book of readings for their church.

We had a great initial meeting (I had been corresponding to the woman by e-mail before that). I asked then, "Why did you decide to get married rather than just living together?r". They looked at me and said very seriously, "It's in our church laws. Yo are not supposed to have sex or live together before you get married." Imagine; somebody following their church laws! In fact they made a point of asking me about the license since they aren't telling anybody but the two witnesses that they are getting married, and they don't want anybody to think they are living together so they want to make sure they have the license so they can show it to anyone if they ask.

322 Probably 30 years ago I was saying I don't care if these guys want to teach other doctrines (gay marriage is fine, for instance) ... but there really should be a disclaimer on the "Christian" part when they start teaching doctrine that is clearly not from the Bible, and often very contrary to the Bible.

But now that men can compete in women's event just because they "identify" as a woman, I suppose there is not much chance they'll respect the "brand". I suppose they change a lot of the hymns as well.

It's a very interesting faith. There are things I don't agree with, but it's o.k. because I'm not a Christian Scientist. It has some very appealing things about it too. I was writing down some information for my records and I asked how old they are. They looked at me and said "We don't celebrate birthdays in our church. Hey, I've been to Ningbo. Went to visit a company there with some Chinese co-workers (salespeople) while in Shanghai (just across the bay). You have to go over this really long bridge crossing the bag to get there. The bridge was pretty new in 2012, but they were already working on it. China, were everything is made to be fixed again.

Too bad the place blew up. It's a big factory town. I think there is an LG appliance factory there.

That's actually pretty awful. The accident, that is.

Even without a direct strike, you can get some very weird induction effects from the strong EM (radio freq) pulse from a nearby lightning strike.

Standing next and touching metal siding can give you a noticeable shock.

I saw that phenomenon close up one time. I had just put a truck under an old shed years ago to get it out of the rain. When I got it under, it was too late, a bad storm was coming, and I didn't want to chance making a run for it. So I waited it out sitting in the cab of that truck.

There was a flash of light indicating a strong nearby strike. An arc jumped from the metal siding of the shed to the ground at the same time. I happened to be looking at just the right spot.

All that happened before the sound of the thunder, which was a humdinger of a boom, came through.

391 Rappin Trump, that would be Great. Starting with, you know, that one guy, Vaughn Meader, right? every hep Preezy has had a sort of official impressionist. Poor Vaughn didn't find it a career builder, but it was such an aw-shucks, we're all friends here stroke for most presidents. So of course, there will be none of this for the Trump era.

But if an impressionist could get that Trump rap down, oh baby. And you'd have to get his pacing/phrasing, which is so damn non-standard, with just an occasional pause in the wrong place, or a word mispronounced, or was it?, the actual art of a mimic...and then some truly Trump-quality material. You just know he already knows the people who could put this together. And I'm laughing already, just looking forward to it.

John Hendricks died the other day, only 96. Hale and hearty right up until, but, he missed his wife so what can you say. Many a time I shook my head wondering why rap fans didn't go nuts for his spiel, because damn could he spiel.

Lightening is crazy stuff. Our plant had a big lighting strike back in 2000. The charge hit the main building and blew out some electronic control units, ran down the underground line between the main transformer and the office building, and melted the fuses, jumped the gap and blew up one of the step down transformers. Left the other one untouched.

422 True fact. In a dry climate such as Colorado, you can drag your feet across the carpet, touch say a doorknob, get the crap shocked out of you and jump back. The DC voltage may be as high as 40,000 volts, but the amperage is minimal. That's why you don't drop dead on the spot. It's not the voltage that kills you. It's the amperage.

434 My climate sure as hell isn't supposed to be dry -- we're a former swamp bottom, and maybe 12 feet higher than the lake, a couple of miles away -- but, you get a piece of everything around here. When the heating season starts, and then sometimes when the commercial A/C units first come on, indoor humidity goes to a little under zero. It gets extremely trying to shop for groceries. The shelves are metal, the glass freezer doors have metal surrounds, everything is grounded. It can be like getting mildly beat up by the time you're done, and after the first couple zaps one's mood tends to sharpen.

Okay, this can not be true. But then, so much crazy in the world, I guess it could be.

As for Catholics, advice does vary. I know priests have told divorced people it is fine to take communion...and some who have said absolutely not. It seems dependent on the church you attend. For what it is worth.

I'm confused about your wife's prior marriage. I know that Catholics used to not recognize prior marriages if they were not preformed in the Catholic chuch. So should not count against you. Or maybe she is not Catholic, but her service was preformed in a Catholic church? None of my beeswax really.

443 publius, the Judge had a Cadillac, but no model given so that could mean anything. I had a Cadillac once, and it had some nice points to it, but Cadillac is most concerned with "ride quality" and they achieve that with weight. 457 The Punisher can absolutely work as a standalone character. Just dust off some of the old 'Mack Bolan' plots (P-man is basically an Executioner rip off anyway. And I say that as a fan of both).

You usually need to start with establishing your bad guys. Then you introduce the Punisher. Show him gathering intel, working is way through the organization and finally taking out the rest of the trash.

Handled badly, yeah, it can be boring. So can most superhero plots.

He does work well as a counterpoint to a Liberal or otherwise impractical character, though.

But Marvel hates him, they stopped giving him to good writers like Chuck Dixon. Garth Ennis has his...good points, I guess. But even he misses some core elements of what makes Punisher tick.

460 Good question from one of my FB friends:

What's the fastest you've ever driven?

My answer:
Maybe 110 mph. In, believe it or not, a 1998 Ford Escort 4-door. Was driving to Blythe on the I-10, the highway was only 2 lanes, and there was NO traffic. April 1997.

Posted by: qdpsteve at November 26, 2017 12:18 AM (eMKNe)

162 mph. Kawasaki ZX-11. Owned by a Texas Department of Public Safety State Trooper.

Who, might I add, operated the radar unit in his patrol car, to clock the speed.

The bike could exceed 180 mph, but *I*, could not.

My DPS friend then had me run the radar, and observed him at a sustained 184 mph.

Which paled at the ride of his other Trooper friend, on a Honda Blackbird, with a clean 191 mph run.

There are some long straight and deserted roads just a bit South of Castroville, TX.

480 Gotta' state a big thanks to all of the Horde:

Over the last month or so and for the first time in years, I've been able to read the threads and contribute some comments-- mostly my lame sock-shtick, but also with occasional thoughtful & sincere comments. it's all been very therapeutic.

Unfortunately for me, but certainly a reprieve for the Horde, my time will get limited again, soon. Gots to deal with the, you-know, mundane shit that is life-altering type thing.

Just wanted to state- before I am sucked in to the vortex- I genuinely appreciate the folks here that comment, the cobs and ace. I know there's many that are going through difficult times. Prayers and thought are extended to all.

Hopefully, I'll be able to sneak in and post a random, dumb-ass comment that is considered humorous to a few and maybe I can even place a well thought out, structured sentence with meaning...

484 @459 I learned about this stuff in school. All the dangers and downsides of these failed systems. So wtf is wrong with these people wanting socialism and communism? Did they learn nothing? If the media wasn't pushing this crap it would matter less, but they do. Which reminds me, time for my daily 'I hate the MSM' statement.
-------------------

The further we get from the Cold War, the less people are aware of. Nazis are the cartoon villains of the 20th Century. You can do anything you want to them, and as long as it's bad, nearly everyone will cheer you on. Communists are those weird misguided people that fought alongside us in World War 2, and got harassed by that jerk Joe McCarthy. There's also the communists who were just poor people trying to free themselves from European colonial oppression.

Several years ago, someone in an online conversation mentioned that a clan in an online game that he'd been playing got punished by the admins because they'd picked a name for their clan that linked back to the Soviet side of the Cold War. The guy mentioning it couldn't believe that the administrators of the game would be so mean as to do something like that. Then I pointed out that it was possible that the administrators were from Eastern Europe, and he suddenly got real quiet.

486 I guess laser pointers would work for that, uh, application.
Don't see why it would be illegal. Nobody in the sort of crowd that
would come to that show would be looking at the dancers' butts, would
they?
----

It's not looking at the lasers that's a problem it's the lasers being randomly pointed into someone's eyes.

There's a lot of complexity involved with laser usage and wattage. They're actually regulated by the CDRH, which is a division of the FDA,and you have to jump through a lot of hoops to use them legally in a performance. .

A laser pointer and a laser used for laser eye surgery is still a laser.

Using certain lens systems, lasers can be focused over an audience. The rest of the time they have to terminated on a point like a ceiling or a wall.

/oh God, who am I? Why do I know these things?

Cars built without power steering usually have enough mechanical advantage built into the steering gear that it is manageable for a slightly-built woman. Even when parallel parking. Going down the road at speed, steering takes very little effort. Now a car equipped with power steering, if the power assist fails, a lot of muscle is needed. But you can steer. (Despite all the crapola you've heard about the engine failing in somebody's Owwie 5000, and they drove off a cliff because they couldn't steer. Allegedly.)

The weight of the car has lot to do with it. Try driving a sports car, or an old VW Beetle some day. Their steering is manual, and very easy. I had an Austin 1100, once, it steered like a go-kart. You simply didn't have to lift the accelerator to make a 90-degree corner. It was like it was on rails.

506 Just imagine a late 1940's vintage Mack Truck.

Hydraulic nothing, no power assist anywhere.

Can you imagine Pajama Boy at the wheel of such an intimidating conveyance?

No, neither can I.

For that matter, P.J.B. couldn't even snap-down a load binder on a modern flatbed load.

Oh, hell. P.J.B. couldn't even property tarp the load.

Worse. P.J.B. couldn't run a simple Bobcat skid-steer loader without pissing his jumper in the first 90 seconds.

And a 1973 Ford Pinto Runabout, with a 4 spd. manual, and manual rack & pinion steering?

Bricked, as the kids say. He'd never even get it away from the curb.

Check that. He'd not know how to even find neutral, so that he could crank the engine in the first place.

We need to make their cel phones operate on a manual transmission and with manual steering.

510 texcat, yo. Hey, buddy, the randomer and dumber, the better!
Make sure you make a big noise whenever you come in, get noticed.

AOP, first place I ever read the "remaining eye" warning was in a research lab at the Air Force Academy.

Some motorcycle reviewer noted one time, there will be this one smart-ass pre-teen boy in every crowd, when you' just as soon impress the chicks, who asks you, in front of people, not "How fast will this thing go?" but "How fast have you ridden it?" And often there is quite a difference, like Theory and Practice.

Now your Z1 Kawasaki was a powerful machine, if a little (little?) heavy, and if you could find a clear stretch of road and clamp down the triple-tree you could turn some impressive numbers. But at the bar, of course, every one of them did 155 shifting into fifth, in the middle of a corner, poppin a wheelie. That's just how things are.

I never had more than 75 HP to work with, riding essentially brand new antiques. I tend to think that if you're going 125 on a 400 pound machine, that's damned fast. British twins that didn't have the hysterical rubber mountings for the engine would give off a buzz, each size and make different, that would put your feet to sleep on a long run.

But the BSA 750 triple, which was not really a fast bike, would run right up to 110 and stay there for an hour, solid as a rock and making a Ferrari-like hunting moan through those weird three-nippled "fish pipes." Really fun to ride at that speed. And you could park it in front of a bar with the key in it, and nobody would steal it.

535 Zettai, I think you're talking about the 2-stroke triples, 500 and 750.
The Kaw I mean is a 900cc transverse four, 4-stroke. They were sumpin'.

AOP can relate, Studebaker offered an "interesting" option on the Avanti, the so-called quick ratio steering. What you got was the normal steering gear, but with the shorter arm from the power steering package. This, coupled with Studebaker's really logical but extremely odd Studebaker-Ackerman center-pull geometry, gives you a stable high-speed feel that just wants to "hunt over center" the teensiest bit when you're dead-nuts straight. Fast and easy steering action on the track, BUT, big butt, you'd better have the wheels rolling just a bit at parking speeds or you will NEVER move that steering wheel.

Fierce, manly clutch, too, which you come to appreciate, but letting somebody just tool around the lot in it is sort of like handing a magnum 12 gauge to a first timer and having them hold it an inch from their shoulder.

Honestly, Thanksgiving was terrible. My sister and dad were fighting, i am still sick, mom is dying, and my heart is broken. This is one of the worst holidays i have ever had including the great clusterfuck of 07. Thats the one i ate japanese curry made from leftovers alone. At least rthday one was quiet, AOP, and Howco kept me company online.
