A life spent making mistakes is not only more honorable, but more useful than a life spent doing nothing. George Bernard Shaw

GO. AWAY. NOW.

The profound, negative effect of human activity on our environment is widely discussed, yet many continue to deny that we have a problem. In an attempt to remedy that, more than 15,000 scientists from 184 countries signed “World Scientists’ Warning to Humanity: A Second Notice,” an article published in the November 13 issue of BioScience.

Winston Churchill and medicinal alcohol during US prohibition.

On December 13, 1931, a car zipping along Fifth Avenue in New York City rammed into Winston Churchill. Churchill, in town to give a lecture at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, had looked to his right instead of his left while crossing the street (a habit—traffic in England came from the left). The accident cut Churchill’s nose and forehead, bruised his chest, and left him with a sprained shoulder. “I do not understand why I was not broken like an egg-shell or squashed like a gooseberry,” he later wrote.

The press described the injuries as minor, but for months following the accident, Churchill privately battled depression and pleurisy, a condition that causes sharp chest pains. And Churchill, a prodigious drinker on a lecture circuit in Prohibition-era America, couldn’t exactly guzzle the pain away. Buying alcohol was illegal—until he got a doctor’s note. His physician, Dr. Otto C. Pickhardt, wrote that “the post-accident concussion of Hon. Winston S. Churchill necessitates the use of alcoholic spirits especially at meal times.” Specifically, Churchill required a “naturally indefinite” quantity of booze.

Are these scientists mad? Scientists create a new mosquito.

Researchers at the University of California, Riverside have developed transgenic mosquitoes that stably express the Cas9 enzyme in their germline. The addition of Cas9 will enable the use of the CRISPR gene editing tool to make efficient, targeted changes to the mosquitoes' DNA.

Speaking of certifiable a$$holes, Elephants as "legal persons" No I can't make this sh!t up.

Yesterday, the Nonhuman Rights Project filed a petition on behalf of three elephants being kept at a Connecticut zoo. The suit demands that the court recognize these animals as “legal persons” and release them to sanctuary, but given that the same legal team failed to secure similar personhood rights for chimps in New York, it’s not immediately clear how successful the new effort will be.

The trio of elephants, Beulah, Karen, and Minnie, never asked for legal representation, but the lawyer in charge of the NhRP suit, Steven Wise, argues that they’re legal persons with the fundamental right to bodily liberty, or in the parlance of lawyers, habeas corpus. The three elephants, ranging in age from 45 to 50, were captured as wild animals when they were young

I found it on the internet, it has to be true. Amirite? Maine has more coastline than California.

This seems like a dumb question because obviously California is huge and beach-y and Maine is comparatively tiny and pretty cold.
But actually, the Pine Tree State has more beachfront mileage than the Golden one — at least, it does when you add up all the little curves.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), California boasts a grand total of 840 miles of shoreline. Officially, Maine only has about 228. However, it turns out there’s another kind of shoreline that can be considered.

Looking for adventure? Need an adrenaline rush? Just be very, very careful when you're tree skiing.

Powder stashes, no crowds, a silent forest in winter: Tree skiing can be glorious. But with trees come danger in the form of tree wells.

Experts claim tree wells are responsible for up to 20 percent of all ski deaths. Here are some pointers to stay out of harm’s way.

20 Moron PSA-

for grammie or anyone who missed it today:

This was a collaborative effort. I didn't work alone!

Thank: Weasel, Ben Had, Bluebell, Jane, Miley and 'Sarah'.

Here's the info for those that missed it. I'm sorry to keep posting this but not everyone sees every comment on every thread:

For those that don't know, rickl is beginning treatment tomorrow for
cancer. Several of us have been working on finding a service that will
deliver meals to him. We've found a service that is specifically geared
toward cancer patients, Savorhealth.com. In addition to having
nutritionist on call for the patient, they have gift certificates that
can be purchased that he can then use to order meals.

To that end, we have set up a bank acct. that will take the
donations for those wanting to contribute. The information to send a
donation is as follows:

Make checks payable to: Meals for Rick L

First State Community Bank

201 E. Columbia St.

Farmington, MO 63640

As money accumulates, I will use it to purchase certificates from SavorHealth.

The other option is for you to go online and purchase a gift
certificate yourself. They will keep a tally of incoming amounts and
issue rick a certificate once a certain amount is hit. If you choose to
donate via this option, please note in the field provided online the
recipient is "Rick L".

SavorHealth prefers that people don't send them checks as there will be a wait time for them to clear.

If you have any questions, you can ask here or e-mail me at moronettetami at gmail.

Thank you all!

205 Researchers at the University of California, Riverside have developed transgenic mosquitoes that stably express the Cas9 enzyme in their germline. The addition of Cas9 will enable the use of the CRISPR gene editing tool to make efficient, targeted changes to the mosquitoes' DNA.

========

Huh? Create mosquitoes with editable DNA. Then design supermosquitoes that would drive normal mosquitoes to extinction, but they'd also have genes allowing them to be killed off by some chemical the scientists produce, so that after the normal mosquitoes are gone, the scientists can kill off the modified ones and rid the world of mosquitoes.

The only problem is that the modified mosquitoes become hyperintelligent, and genetically modify themselves to become a gigantic, super race of mosquitoes, massacring the scientists, drinking their blood, and then leaving the laboratory in order to conquer humanity.

He was more of a wait and see than last night, but he then supported the mealymouthed notion of postponing the election for some indefinite period to wait for all the facts to come out.

Which is bullshit. You set the rules and date of an election, then you have it. You don't change the rules during the process because you don't like how it's going.

Also it's bullshit because anyone dumb enough to be fooled by the McConnell hunta isn't going to fess up no matter how much time you give them to try and save face before AL voters send a clear message that your opinion is invalid and worthless. Delaying only gives more time for McConnell's agents to find something new to throw at the wall, and decreases the time has to make the Senate a living hell (I look forward to him filibustering pretty much anything by reading 1 and 2 Chronicles).

True story. A colleague had a grad student, Emma Royd, who claimed an African grad student had molested her (I've forgotten exactly what she said, but it was of that ilk).

My colleague was shocked, and started to take action, but that wasn't enough to satisfy (?) Emma. She then proceeded to claim my colleague had ALSO abused.

Shit got real. Now the dean was involved, and he interviewed her. My colleague was sweating bullets. But fortunately, this crazy bitch then decided the dean wasn't doing enough, and accused HIM too of molesting her.

Which tore it. The whole thing then collapsed.

The bad news: the bitch still got her Ph.D., which was not a given beforehand, and may have been the entire point.

The very fact that ALL of the tale-bearers are called "accusers" is a problem.
As you point out, the last two are not describing a crime. But calling them "accusers" implies that a crime has been committed.

Who gives a shit what Europeans think?

What correct decisions of any import have the Europeans made in the last 100 years? I asked that of a German douchebag I ran into some years ago. After straining his brain he finally came up with an answer:

The Euro!

I laughed and asked him what was so correct and important about the Euro (forget that it was a failure, anyway). He said that it was important because it "attacked the dollar". Yep. That was, in his own mind, the only contribution that Europe had made to the world in the past 100 years .. putting together a loser currency to attack the nation that saved its sorry ass from itself.

Anything else is superfluous, as is the NPA and scalpel unless you expect medically trained folks on scene.

409 Civilization requires food surpluses, which itself depends on edible crops and sufficient population to cultivate them and transport them.

It also requires odd things like the organization and ability to do some sort of defense against the bastards that want to steal from you, and ideally some sort of bartering system in a widely accepted commodity.

444 And someone else suggested Hwy 395 in Cali, I don't think we have consensus. /i]

No way it's 395, for several reasons.

First, 395 runs north-south, as the numbering suggests. (Odd numbers N-S, even run E-W). In that part of the country, which I'm all too familiar with, geological folds lie east-west. Plate tectonics, and all that.

Second, I learned to drive a stick shift on the old 395. Sitting at a stop sign with the driver training instructor, watching traffic whiz by at 70 mph, looking for a gap in traffic, and then pulling out and having to power shift through the gears to avoid getting freigh trained, rather focuses the mind on the layout.

Third, the geography is all wrong for 395. That part of Cali is dry, but not THAT dry.

Fourth, and relevant to #1, 395 runs through valleys between coastal hills (to the west) and foothills of mountains (to the east). Neither are in evidence in the photo.

Good tip. Thanks.

I've explained this to (retarded leftist) colleagues, who "give their inventions to the world."

Assholes: would you build a house on land to which you did not have clear title? Why not? Because all of your effort and investment could go for naught, right?

So why should anyone invest in the requisite development of YOUR inventions, if afterwards anyone could use them? The guy who invested in development of your inventions would be in the WORST rather than the best competitive position, wouldn't he, because he'd have already sunk cash, unlike his competitors.

It's amazing how stupid academics can be. Further proof, if any were needed, that intelligence isn't a scalar, it's a tensor.

Posted by: Deplorable Jay Guevara at November 15, 2017 11:32 PM (Llmo+)

I have to point out that people do that all the time. All of Hong Kong was built on land that was only rented. Rockefeller Center was built on land on a 99-year lease.

The clear title thing isn't the best example because most building is not to merely occupy and hold but to generate revenue, and that can be done on land that isn't exactly "yours". The same thing happens when people or businesses renovate or remodel leased buildings to suit their particular needs.

493 #9. ONT-ological argument: this is the a thread than which no greater can be conceived. That's why it exists, even though I had my doubts a few minutes ago.

Sed contra: Not quite. I can think of this ONT-ological thread as not existing. Therefore, it is not the ONTO-thread than which none greater can be thought. A thread I can think of as not existing is not as great a thread as one whose non-existence I can conceive. Since, I can think of an ONT-thread which cannot be thought not to exist, while thinking of this thread as not existing. Thus, the one I conceive as greater. E.g. an ONTO-thread that discusses that being than which none greater can be thought. An ONTO-thread must pick out one necessarily existent thready-thing, whose non-existence is inconceivable.

Respondeo. Though this Onto-thread was certainly a great one, now that it contains the Descriptive Name--quis que nihil maius, etc.--perhaps now it IS that thread than which none greater can be thought.

And, even worse .... it's not really the state but just the schools that you are renting your property from. Around here, school taxes account for something like 85% of the property tax burden. It's insane. They spend an unimaginable shitload on the schools ... and they all suck, anyway - at least in terms of educating.

That's a really good point. But what are the critical distinctions?

First, Hong Kong and the Rockefeller Center are pretty much guaranteed to generate revenue, so it's not that much of a risk.

New inventions, OTOH, are pretty much guaranteed to be worth shit. "Hey, I've got a great idea for foreskin transplants, and you can get in on the ground floor!" is more the norm.

Second, the other critical distinction: for both Hong Kong and the Rockefeller Center, there is a limited amount of land, and at least for a time the investor has the exclusive right to that land.

In neither case does an investor face the prospect of investing in an expensive building, and when the ribbon is cut, being turfed out by someone else who claims to own the place.

Let me clarify. By "clear title" I meant that no one can dispute your right to be there, or your ownership of the improvements. When you finish the improvements, no one can (legally) tell you to get out, at least for a given period; if you put money into the property otherwise, you're an idiot.

"Full use" is more of what you meant. Sure.

ANd even in the cases of leased property the lessee still has some leverage. He builds a beautiful 75 story skyscraper on the leased land and then, as the lease comes due, if the owner isn't willing to extend it or pay what the building is worth at that moment the lessee simply razes the building a week before the lease expires.

Such property may not be "owned" by the developers, but they do have the reasonable expectation of having the use of it for a certain amount of time.

Most of the US was settled by folks who pushed outside the borders of the settled regions, from before there was a USA until the closing of the frontier in the 1890s. These settlers learned to expect that the US would expand its borders to include the land on which they had settled, and were productively using, and they would eventually get title to that land.

565 Don't know 'bout the skeeter article didn't read it but

They have the gene to make all skeeters of the not-carrying-diseases type.

The trick was to engineer a super-dominant type which would take over the population instead of being diluted with each generation.

The combination is a simple, an effective technique which could END skeeter-bourne diseases.

The same super-dominant aspect has incredibly powerful potentials for every other DNA mod, including humans, so it's scary. H-Bomb level scary powerful, but, boy, if we could harness fusion...!

589 "One day I would like to drive the entire State Route One."

About 15 years ago, we travelled from VA to CA for my BIL's 70th, and my husband swore that while we were there, we would drive to Big Sur and back on the coast road in a convertible, so he rented a Solara for the occasion.

He drove south from Salinas and I drove back, and we both had a great time going across the Bixby bridge and having our Clint Eastwood movie moment.

The other thing I remember is while we were going south, I started to see these evergreens like I had never seen before, like thick-trunked pencils with minimal branches, sprouting from the ditches and the berms, and gradually getting bigger and thicker until I had a v-8/thwock-myself-in-the-head moment and realized they were redwoods.

I felt so stupid, and so excited, at the same time!

Was he an alcoholic, or just an accomplished drinker? I sort of thought the defining characteristic of "alcoholic" was that the subject's alcohol consumption brought about bad changes in the subject's life. Like loss of job, or family. Winnie managed to run an entire country, and a war, too.

evaluate them just kept threatening us. main complaint was literally
that we were walking in our apartment after 9pm. my thought was lawyer
up and let them have it hard. no way corporate was going to condone the
building behavior. never even once stopped by to listen to us walking
in the floor.

Everything democrat have done for eight years has been wealth transfer from red states to blue states. I'm done with hoping to get back to zero karma. We would fall short, and the wrong lessons would be learned from that.

I want to ruin motherfuckers so that they aren't one day replaced by a new generation of thieves and parasites. What did they say about Mugabe? "He is being detained for his own protection and security." That. I want that.

639 Churchill wasn't such a great leader nor a great military strategist, though he thought himself one, and was a bit of a perv if the rumours are true... He was a great a great orator -- he had a lot in common with that other fellow in Germany that way! But that other fellow had none of Churchill's vices!

Add one provision-that 50% of any loan that goes into default becomes the responsibility of the school that took it. The number of Departments of Grievance Studies would plummet.

Also, the proposed excise tax on income of large endowments (and all well funded non-profits) should be on those endowments themselves.

Finally, distribution rate-the amount they have to use each year-should be raised from the current 5% to 20%.

749 We had a road like that right here in Jersey, although it was only just under a mile in length. Then the county came and lopped off the hills and filled the valleys. Wasn't nearly as much fun after that, but then again, that's what government does, right? Ruins everything.

751 I won't believe Mugabe is gone until he is really gone. I have followed him for years reading the newspapers from that area of Africa. Ida Amin retired to Saudi Arabia in the end and still lived life in luxury until his end. The decrepit old Zimbabwe airlines might actually get Mugabe out of the country safely.

754 whenever Stirewalt or Rove are on explaining how Bannon and the tea party were evil forces that must be put down (generally my interpretation of their establishment convictions ... the Darth Vader Imperial March music should play in background

"this rebel revolt must be put down ... Bannon has caused a disturbance in the force ... we must show him the true power of the dark side"
