Quotes of The Day

Quote I

The Democrats circle the wagons around their perverts, do everything they can to protect ’em, and the Republicans can’t wait to throw ’em all overboard. The simple fact of the matter is the Republican Party wants this guy gone, but he’s not gonna leave. Rush Limbaugh

Quote II

We have a Navy that can't sail its ships; we have a United States Army Military Academy that is graduating people who are openly communist and anti-American. And now a man who betrays his country, who deserts his men in the face of the enemy, who gets men killed and wounded, gets no jail time! Our military is more broken than I ever feared possible. I'm stunned and disgusted. Col. Kurt Schlichter

Quote III

Taxes have an effect, and it isn’t an accidental side-effect, it’s an ulterior but central purpose: To weaken and distort the messages that bind civilization together, that keep it functioning.

Civilization is made up of very few of these messages: “It is wrong to kill or hurt other people”; “If someone has something you want, you need to acquire consent from them before you take it and that usually means paying for it”; “If you help me get things done I want to get done, I will give you this money.” Liberals and democrats want taxes higher, higher, higher, all the time and they don’t have a set amount in mind, nor do they want to pay for “police, fire departments and park benches”; they just want the taxes to be high, so they can attack that 3rd message that keeps civilization working and functional. Ideally, for them, the tax rate would be 100% and we’d all be fed & sheltered by living on the dole. Then, dependency on the state would also be 100%. Then they’d reach the “fun part” — they tell the rest of us what to do, and we go do it. House of Eratosthenes

Quote IV

“We need a total, I might say, brainwashing. We need to wash our brains out and see a very different kind of world.” Gov. Jerry Brown (D-CA)

Bi-Partisanship be damned!

Sen. Ron Wyden (D., Ore.) is trying to put the brakes on a bipartisan anti-sex trafficking bill that is picking up steam and appears headed for all but certain Senate passage early next year.

The bill, which the Commerce Committee unanimously passed this week, would allow families of victims of sex-trafficking, as well as states, to sue websites like Backpage, a Craigslist competitor, that allow advertisements selling sex with minors to be posted.

17 Democrats agreeing with Republicans and this guy says, "Hold the damn bus!". It really is a swamp.

How to survive Thanksgiving! And we aren't talking about Aunt Susan's rotten ass cooking either.

Take the opportunity to listen to different viewpoints, suggested Weinraub.
"You might want to hear about why they voted for them or their analysis," she said. "People have different perceptions than you do, rather than convince them our perception is better than their's, we might learn something if we listen to them."

Ah, the age of innocence -- sort of like Ike Turner before he met Tina.

Second Amendment, your humble Cob went out and purchased one of those scary black things recently. Seems I'm safer with an AR-15 that without one.

The global history of mass shootings demonstrates that the vast majority of these crimes are perpetrated in places where citizen firearms ownership is close to nil. While people can argue about cause and effect, the facts are indisputable.

This might seem surprising to people who read a recent article in the New York Times claiming that the mass shootings in the United States are a direct consequence of the high density of gun ownership in the country. But the article is analytically flawed, as Robert VerBruggen detailed for National Review Online. For example, the Times article is based on a study by a professor who refuses to allow skeptics to see his data or his methodology. But let’s hypothesize that the assertions by the professor are correct. It is still true that mass shooting fatalities are heavily concentrated in areas where citizen firearms possession is prohibited.

Speaking of AR-15s. A regular commenter here wanted to pose a question to the Horde. The question is as follows, "Which of the big gun manufacturers makes the highest quality rifle in the $500-$600 range?"

No mention about optics or other accessories. But I bet you Morons can help this reader out.

November 14, 1960, Ray Charles went to No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Georgia On My Mind', a No.24 hit in the UK. His cover of Hoagy Carmichael's 1930 standard, became the first of three No.1 hits for the singer. via thisdayinmusic.com

Grammar police please turn away.

In the course of ONT research one comes upon some interesting items. Some are maddening. Some are thought provoking. And some are just downright funny.

Let me wind this up by telling you I have been determined by the cashier at Walmart to be sexist.
You guys know me. I’m a nice person. I’m never one to stir the pot, rock the boat, start the proverbial shit. Okay, then pretend, if you have to. Bottom line is, I call almost everyone “sweetie.” It’s reflex. I’ve always done it. My mom called everyone “honey”, except my dad who was justifiably called “shut up, Rob.” It’s a tradition.
So after being given my change, I said, as usual, “Thank you, sweetie” and prepared to go attempt to find my car, because I lose that junker every time I go anywhere.
Cashier With Huge Hair And False Eyelash Addiction: You know, that’s a sexist thing to say.
me: Huh?
CWHHAFEA: Calling me “sweetie”. It’s sexist.
me: Sweetie, I don’t know what you’re talking about.
CWHHAFEA: You can’t call me that. It demeans me. It implies you think of me in a sexual way.
me: *long blank stare, what Sheri geniusly calls the 404 look*
CWHHAFEA: I read it on the computer. So it’s true.
me: *continued long blank stare, mainly because I wanted to see where this would lead*
CWHHAFEA: Well?
me: Well what?
CWHHAFEA: You gonna apologize?
me: Hon, I was just being nice. I don’t want to fuck you.
Then I wheeled my cart away, leaving CWHHAFEA sputtering in fury and suppressed desire.

It only took 19 minutes to find my car. So yeah, I’m still a goddess

If she isn't an 'ette, The ONT is offering a cardboard subscription.

20 Baby Sister Update

So, Joyce and Jessica spent Saturday together:

"Joyce and I put a new twist, stretch, balance & bounce into our YMCA workout. The pictures tell the tale.

At the beginning of our workout she had the usual, *what are you getting me into? ... look on her face.* As usual, it didn't take much time and/or acknowledgement of her own strength, coordination, alignment and balance before she was saying "Thank you, thank you, this feels amazing ...thank you."

Then a well-deserved "spa time". SHE LOVES THAT SO MUCH! WHO WOULDN'T? Our date didn't stop there. After the YMCA we went to Ace Hardware to purchase a few supplies for a fun project we've been working on. Between walking into & through Ace H, then through the parking lot to a hipster clothing store (was just looking), back through the parking lot to the van and then finally through my yard (to said project) and back. Joyce got a FYI.. Walking through my yard could be compared to four wheeling. All the more reason for her to stay tuned into her own thought process and fine-tuned body."

Thanks, Jessica!

Joyce's birthday is Saturday, and she's really looking forward to having her Minnesota friends in to help celebrate.

[Horde: To my fellow Hordelings, thank you all in advance for your prayers and well-wishes for my sister and her family]

(HARARE, Zimbabwe) - At least three explosions were heard in Zimbabwe's capital early Wednesday and military vehicles were seen in the streets after the army commander threatened to "step in" to calm political tensions over 93-year-old President Robert Mugabe's possible successor. The ruling party accused the commander of "treasonable conduct."

Mugabe last week fired Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa and accused him of plotting to take power, including through witchcraft. Mnangagwa, who enjoyed the military's backing and once was seen as a potential president, fled the country and said he had been threatened. Over 100 senior officials allegedly supporting him have been listed for disciplinary measures by a faction associated with Mugabe's wife, Grace.

Maddox has been mentioned here a time or two, but just as a refresher, he gained a bit of Internet fame back in the late '90s and early 00's for his edgy online personality and decent jokes/observations. That changed somewhere from then until now...fame's a hell of a drug, I guess.

What happens when driver's license becomes Real ID compliant? And, you ask for the old form license that is not Real ID compliant. Do you still get registered to vote, because, apparently, one does not have to get a Real ID compliant license? His first two terms were before term limits were enacted in 1990, and those limits were not retroactive. The only other person now who could hypothetically serve more than eight years is Deukmeijian.

Also, remember that before Jerry Brown was Pat Brown, who lead the landslide for Dems in 1958 for California. California when from GOP legislature, GOP governor, two GOP U.S. Senators to Dems winning the governorship, the state Senate (which they've held for all but two years since), the Assembly (which they've held for all but three years since), and also picked up a U.S. Senate seat.

California when from GOP legislature, GOP governor, two GOP U.S. Senators to Dems winning the governorship, the state Senate (which they've held for all but two years since), the Assembly (which they've held for all but three years since), and also picked up a U.S. Senate seat.

Two points.

First, before Jerry Brown was ... Ronaldus Magnus. (That - i.e., 1975 - was when the liberal infestation of my beloved California really began kicking in, when every shithead from every liberal shithole in the Northeast and upper Midwest decided to move here and "wear flowers in their hair." )

Second, Pat Brown was a conservative Democrat, and only the second Democrat governor in California history, his asshole son Jerry being the third (turd?).

Tonite or before the call, look up all the psych 101 questions that HR people like to ask and have answers ready.

Trust me on this. I didn't and lost out to some HR bimbo while applying for a job that required mechanical and electrical aptitude and manual dexterity.

She asks me " where to you see yourself in 5 years?"

I go "HuH". I knew I wasn't getting a call back at that point.

Touchy feely crap for a blue collar job.

So go on the internet and google the questions that HR people ask and note them and have answers ready.

Cause the person doing the interview most likely has NO idea what the job really entails. He's just got a list of items to check off for the type of person they want. They probably don't care about your actual qualifications. They're more interested in the kind of person you are.

And if that doesn't explain the problem that this country has nothing will.

Spend the extra money on a Holosun HS503GU which turns itself on at the slightest movement so battery life is counted in years. Has a circle + dot reticle so that the circle is useful for stressful home defense situation while the dot is used for longer distance range targets.

Not that I thought they'd be worth a fortune or the like but I was hoping for something like a buck or so apiece but no-go.

Took 'em to the bank the next day to get the $10 for the roll. I wonder if whoever bought the roll for change ever wondered at the incredible coincidence that he'd bought a roll of quarters and every single one was a Mountie quarter?!

6.5x50 or 7.7x58, the bulk manufacture of both calibers were abruptly discontinued around August of 45 so if you want to fire it you will want to get into reloading. On the plus side, if the bolt cycles and the barrel is straight it's probably a shooter. You should check to see if the serial numbers match (chances are they don't, most of the war bring-backs were picked up off the docks, the rifles were in one pile and the bolts were in another, you pick up one of each and give it to the ship's armory for the trip home).

389 365 Bicentennial quarter. My mother has collected around 10,000 of them or so.
I had collected a whole roll of 1975 R.C.M.P. Anniversary quarters through the years but when I went to look up values online and talked to a numismatist about them, he told me that they were worthless unless they were mint and bought uncirculated from the Mint.

Apparently one office thought the mums should be ground out and everyone thought it was a general order.

They shoot the same, just there is a premium on the ones with the mums.

I did that as a kid. One of my buddies' father was a dentist, and so we got access to mercury.

As a practical matter, mercury poisoning isn't a big deal. The biological half-life is (IIRC) 30-60 days, so if you're not exposed to it constantly, you pee it out.

Now that refers to inorganic mercury. Organic mercury - e.g., dimethyl mercury - is another story entirely, and extremely bad news.

423 Speaking of WWII rifles, just finishing a short book that is the story of a young Austrian in a mountain division of the Wehrmacht who ended up being one of the premier snipers on the southern part of the eastern front. He used a Mosin sniper pick-up for most of his time, then - ??? - have to go check, but he was issued a new German sniper rifle after doing training back in Austria that was really just an excuse to get him home leave.

Interesting tidbits were that the Germans originally had little use for snipers, didn't even a field manual on the subject until spring of '43 - they gained an appreciation for the technique after the Soviets had put so much hurt on them with their massive sniper forces (the book's subject once shot 17 female snipers out of tree-tops in one engagement during the long bloody retreat following Stalingrad - 17). Also, he fought as regular rifleman during the chaotic Carpathian engagements when the Romanians suddenly switched sides - using the freshly issued Stg-44.

And there was a true, hilarious incident at a Geneva meeting of global trade talks, back in the 90s, wherein the then JOOONIOR Senator from South Carolina (as he used to love to say), Fritz Hollings, made comments about some of the African leaders there seeking commodity trade concessions. Involving dining on homo sapiens.

At a press event. Fritz didn't mess around. Not sure there was video, but the faces on the Senate delegation and others must have been priceless.

After the "Roy" the ink changes to blue and the word "Moore" is written looking like someone tried copying from the "ore" in the word "more" in the top part and the capital "M" from the word "Merry" then it all changes to printed words but the "77" in the top, black ink, part is different from the "77" in the blue ink bottom part.

Moore has had a handwriting expert say that Moore's handwriting is not the same as what is in the yearbook.

The blade of a slot screwdriver should be ground to a slight, but visible convex lens profile when viewed end-on.
Like this: () much exaggerated, of course. The edges of the blade should be maybe 60% of the thickness of the middle. A screwdriver blade, so ground, will engage the slot of the screw on the flanks of the curve, instead of just on the corners of the blade. You can apply a lot more torque without morking up the screw slot, and there will be less chance of the blade "camming out", and marring some fine woodwork.
The exact same principle is at work in Snap-On's "flank drive" wrenches and sockets, which do work better than true hexagons.

And to answer your earlier question, yes most of them were ground or struck through to deface them. The ones that are not so marked are more highly prized, and if the numbers on the bolt, barrel and receiver all match even more so. If it's a 6.5x50 it's most likely a type 38, in which case it should have the dust cover over the receiver. Don't believe the stories about the Japanese soldiers removing them because they made noise. Those rifles were all property of the Emperor (hence the mum), who was regarded as a god, and a simple soldier just does not deface the property of the gods. In most cases where the dust cover is gone it's more likely one of those dockside retrievals that I was talking about. After the war they were disassembled and interred in Tokyo Harbor. Probably a lot of them still down there.

504 I was gifted an old single-shot pistol. The barrel screws off and I guess that's how you load it. It has an open sear which doubles as the rear sights. It was jammed up, maybe misassembled, and I could find no markings. So I took it apart. No markings anywhere. And my dumb as didn't think to take pictures of it first so now it's pretty much a mechanical jigsaw puzzle.

505 CB, I don't think building an AR is that difficult. The only part that gives me any pause at all is installing the barrel into the upper receiver, and I don't think that will be that hard with the proper tools. Most of it looks pretty simple. Getting all & the right tools would be another problem.

It's kinda like why I don't bother trying most new cooking recipes I read here on the weekends. It would take me so long to find all the right stuff to put the thing together, I'm sure I'd keep forgetting something. Same with the parts.

Then you add in the time it would take me to put it together, which I'm sure would be months all by itself if I could even do it at all, and I'm just better off going out and buying one.

I have zero mechanical ability whatsoever.

521 CB that's fine, to each their own, if you want one and can go buy one - no problem I can see. I decided to build one mostly to learn. Have basic mechanical ability, but limited mechanical ambition. Like making things, but the only thing I make outside the kitchen is ammunition. Reloading is easier and more fun than most seem to think. And right handy in that you can customize your loads to your own needs.

533 if you can follow a recipe, you can reload ammo.

as for building an AR-15, the one really sticky part, as i grok things, is head spacing the barrel to the BCG. everything else is straight forward, except for the occasional small part or spring that wants to go sailing off.

simple solution, even if you aren't mechanically inclined, is to buy the assembled lower of your choice, then buy the assembled upper/uppers of your choice, pin them together, which ANYONE can do if they can tie their shoes, and go shooting.

550 Hat - I suppose my answer is off-point, but since I don't anticipate SHTF, am not prepping in any way for SHTF (earthquake/short-term disruption preparedness yes, extended SHTF stuff no), I don't anticipate improvising my own primers.

And of the components (brass, primers, projectiles, powder), primers are the second cheapest and smallest, so stockpiling those makes as much sense as stockpiling the others. And if you have the others, you'll have primers.

But since you "know stuff" about chemicals, are there household items from which one can McGyver primer materials? (reconstructing the anvil, the mechanical portion of the primer, seems impractical, so it's academic, but curious).

Have no idea, but are primer compounds all that volatile or dangerous to produce/handle? Seem pretty stable to me, at least compared to propellants.

Primer is far more volatile than smokeless (or even black) powder. They seem stable as is, but making the chemical and manufacturing the primer is far, far more difficult.

This is why more basic knowledge such as being able to extract metals from ore, handle glassblowing, making lambic ales/ciders from wild yeast, &c. are the basic of basic skills one needs in order to secure a place of importance in any true post-apocalyptic scenario.

My post-apocalypse practical skills are limited - though probably decent in comparison to most of the population - but since I'm gunned up maybe the best approach is aggression, conquest, dominance, and theft, as opposed to trade.

Speaking of conquest, time to go finish the book on the Wehrmacht sniper, the part where he retreats from Romania into Czechoslovakia and then (presumably) Germany or Austria. Time is September '44, so Ivan is rampaging and Fritz is thinking "hmm, maybe this wasn't such a good idea".

Earlier in the Roy Moore thread ace put up, there were several (at least 3) that cited & linked to Thomas Wictor debunking the Moore accuser. Finally, ace answered one of the commenters.--I'm paraphrasing ace:"Please, Wictor is not a reliable source").

I started following Wictor's twitter-feed back in August because he was linked in one of the morning threads on this site. Wictor had debunked some sjw quite well, it seemed. Although I find some of his tweet-storms reaching in areas, on most things he presents very credible evidence. On the Roy Moore issue, his research presented looks factual to me.

Now, it appears ace and other conservatives such as Kurt Schlichter (not the #SalonHot25! variety) seem either silent on Wictor or as ace has stated "not reliable...what gives? anyone?

I completely mistrust American journalism. I also mistrust 'third wave' feminists who have been running around with their hair on fire since November of last year. Put the two together in one story and I doubt every single word.

Yeah, it's come to that. It's war and they know it. They think that any lie in pursuit of their goals is worthy. Also know as Taqiyya.

Moore may very well be the kind of man who does not like 'used merchandise'. I'm not saying that's right -- nor am I saying it's wrong. The only way he was going to find that type of young woman in the 'free love' culture of the 70's was by pursuing the very young. Once he married there have been no reports for 40 years of any pattern of continuing behavior. That says it all.

Ceiling, no. But when we moved into this house there was wallpaper in every room, covered in yellow because of the heavy smokers who lived here. We scraped room after room after room.

The only remaining bit upstairs is some in the hallway we covered with wainscotting.

Epoxy strips of screening into gaps, then spackle.

I have a smaller room, probably 16 X 14 where all the walls were done in a texture -- not sure if 'popcorn'. I got out my 16" drywall knife and a five gallon tub of drywall compound and leveled it all off. Light sanding and two coats of paint. You'd never know it had once been textured.

676 Thank you all for the removal advice. It turns out that at least in this room, scraping it dry gives the easiest results. Then a light dampening of the remaining adhesive softens it, and a taping knife takes it right off.

Gonna need to use plaster buttons to secure the panels, but I take a Dremel with a carbide tip, and an attached depth guide.

Then I score out a circle for each of the washers in the plaster to allow the washer to be recessed into the finish, instead of on the surface with a heavy coat of mud to cover the buttons. Slow, but it works.
