#Concerned: "Meeting of the Concerned" Ultra-Pure Conservatives Have Strangely Hardcore Progressive Instincts on So Many Issues

"Radio Free" Tom Nichols, who decries a culture in which everyone thinks he's an expert and yet whose own expertise expands to encompass whatever he's ranting about on Twitter today, is especially fragrant today on the "irrational" belief that a law-abiding citizen carrying a gun can actually defend himself in a violent confrontation.

This puzzles me. The idea that only loser criminals -- generally people with poor executive function and hence a low tolerance for learning and practice -- are "good with guns," and meanwhile people who have their shit together (high executive function = greater capacity for practice and learning) just can't hit shit with a gun is strange.

Let's examine this. Idiots like Radio Free Tom make fun of "Murica's Gun Culture," but what are people in "Murica's Gun Culture" doing once a week (or even more)?

Why... they're shooting. Practicing. Getting comfortable with a gun. Turning shooting into muscle memory (and thus hyper-fast and automatic as far as brain function -- very practiced actions result in a neuron pathway that's sheathed by myelin, turning that action into a reflex that bypasses the very slow mental processes of deliberate conscious thought).

Most criminals -- I speak now of street-level criminals -- do not practice with guns very much. Even if they have a higher executive function and have the discipline to practice and learn, they can't do very much of it, because they're usually prohibited by law from even touching one so gun practice is a crime in itself they will generally limit.

Now, one advantage criminals do have, assuming they are habitual violent criminals, is that they're accustomed feeling the rush of adrenaline that comes from violent confrontations. Adrenaline boosts strength, but it demolishes fine-motor coordination. The "Fight or Flight" response supercharges gross physical movements like running or hitting. This system evolved when explosive muscle power, and not fine motor coordination and near-immobility, was the key to fighting your way out of danger.

People like our troops have to train an awful lot in simulated battle scenarios to get tolerant to this side-effect of adrenaline and dull the jitters.

So, edge to the criminals on not being as negatively affected by the rush of adrenaline than the law abiding citizen.

Citizens in "Murica's Gun Culture" will have some tolerance to the adverse side effects of adrenaline, just because they're practicing a lot and at least imagining a true adrenaline-rush situation, but still, I think, edge to the habitual violent criminal here.

But in the other area -- aim, discipline, comfort with the weapon -- the citizen has the edge.

What convinces these "Experts" with nigh-religious certitude that only "Bad People" are capable of effectively firing a gun in a stressful situation?

They seem to think that decency and morality are fundamentally incompatible with composure and accurate aim?

They must not think much of our military and police officers, eh?

#TrueConservatives -- the only conservatives with intellectual integrity enough to embrace every assumption and agenda item of the progressive movement, and the #Eliteness to give away their valuable #Expertise yammering away on Twitter like, you know, morons and lunatics.

Oh By The Way: You'd think that an #Expert who teaches at the Naval War College would know something rather elemental about shooting -- you don't have to hit your target to keep him from shooting effectively.

Just pumping bullets in his direction will cause him to scramble for cover, or flee, or start firing back ineffectually -- panic fire. He'll also be forced to shoot at you, rather than the crowd of unarmed civilians he's currently slaughtering. And you've probably had the good sense to get behind cover before shooting at him.

It's the idea of suppressive or covering fire. Not every shot needs to be a hit to be effective in combat.

But I guess #TheExpert doesn't know that. Unless it's a CNS or heart hit resulting in an instant incapacitation, it's pointless.

One More Thing: I saw a martial arts guy on YouTube demonstrating an unarmed defense against knives. The guy playing the "knife attacker" was using a red felt-tip pen as a "knife," so that each hit would be marked on the defender in red.

The martial arts guy had a lot of red on him post-demonstration. But most hits were to the arms and hips and such.

His conclusion was that even if you're trained, your odds of winning -- or at least not going to the hospital with a large number of wounds -- are low.

However, he pointed out something very important. What's the mindset of the knife blitz-attacker? The knife blitz-attacker is probably imagining he'll just cut people down as if wheat before a scythe.

What happens if a trained defender gets even one decent shot in at his face?

Suddenly that guy is not the situation he imagined -- just murdering unarmed, defenseless people -- but in a real fight in which the outcome is no longer certain, and he might just wind up getting killed himself.

That changes his behavior. Even making the knife attacker consider defense and only attacking in guarded, "safe" ways drastically reduces the number of attacks he can make.

This same logic obviously applies to mass shooters who are suddenly, and unexpectedly, getting shot at before their slaughter is complete. Pinning a guy down, limiting his field of fire, making him only pop his head out occasionally to fire, making him flee -- all of these things reduce or even end his rampage.

Let alone outright disabling or killing him. Which does in fact happen, contra the #Expert belief on the matter.

The shooter in TX was a spousal abuser (violation of law).

He openly carried a weapon into a house of worship (another violation of law)

Murdered 26 people (violation of law).

So libtards, explain it to me like I'm a 3-yr old. Just how is it that laws are going to prevent evil like this?

I would say gun advocates recognize that the motivation behind the use of the gun for mass murder is the problem, not the weapon.

88 One of the reasons the Chicago body count is so high is because gang-bangers do not know how to shoot and spray bullets all over the street. 118 You have to understand that to self-proclaimed coastal elites, a gun may as well be a UFO. They're vaguely aware that they exist, and have some idea of their general purpose, but they have no idea how they work.

This is a really bad metaphor, but hey, I'm in the mood for some bad writing. Imagine that there was a single pill that perfectly managed Type-2 Diabetes. Everyone who has Diabetes takes this pill and it helps them lead a healthy, fulfilling life.

Except that, every year, about 25 or 50 people just explode randomly because they take this pill.

So someone with no need for this pill finds it quite easy to say "This is insanity! Why do we allow this pills that blows people up to be bought so easily!" Never mind that it's perfectly safe for 99.999% of people that take it, or that it's something they need for their quality of life.

So to these coastal cucks, to whom a gun is about as relevant to their everyday lives as a female orgasm, you can see why their first, second and only thought after tragedy like this is "BANBANBANBAN!!!"

159 re: "every other democracy blah blah blah"

a) they're way smaller countries then we are, both in landmass and population.
b) most of our "gun violence" is committed by and on young black men, and a large subset of that violence is gang related, a problem Europe has not historically had.
c) every other "advanced democracy" has the same fucking issues we do with schizophrenia and pyschopaths, but refer back to "a" as to why we seem to have more spree shooting / killing events then they do.

There is literally NOTHING the government can do vis-a-vis guns to change this scenario. You can't uninvent the firearm. You'll have just as much success keeping guns out of the hands of criminals as you've had keeping weed out of the hands of criminals, AND all these "common sense gun reforms" will do is
a) drive more otherwise law abiding citizens to break the law
and
b) disarm people who could otherwise be a huge asset in a violent crime situation -- the responsible gun owner who could possibly save some lives and/or stop a woman from being raped etc. etc. by just unholstering their weapon (must less using it.)

173 I think the left goes too far with the fears of backlash every time there's an event. But there is actually something to the idea that if you continually and without ceasing portray a certain group as the worst possible beings on the planet unworthy of even human rights, that there's a segment of the population that will say "yeah... hell yeah!!!" and pick up a weapon. It may be a bike lock, it maybe a baseball bat attached to a sign, it may be a truck, it may be a gun.

We've seen way too much lately of that happening. Cops shot in Dallas. A congressman shot in DC. A crowd shot in Las Vegas. Churches shot up twice now. Beatings at "rallies" and "protests." Cracked skulls, bloody faces.

People are responsible for this beyond the ones directly guilty.

196 The blood was still warm when Super Expert Man was mocking the notion that anyone would ever need a gun to protect from an attack in a church.

The gunman was stopped because a citizen, not an LEO, shot him. It was citizens, not LEOs, who chased the loser, causing him to either shoot himself and crash or crash and then shoot himself.

(That's not a slam on LEOs, those guys were right there when it happened and thus could react faster.)

Also, Super Expert Boy teaches at the freaking Naval War College.

Here's the thing on Nichols's and his how dare you not respect the authoritah of experts. Dude. I've done litigation work for over a decade and a half now. You can pay anyone enough money and they will come up with an expert opinion that says whatever you want it to say.

Experts are experts to and only to the extent that their knowledge comports with reality. Do I believe a structural engineer is an expert in, you know, stuff not falling down? Yup.

Do I still believe that structural engineer is an expert in stuff not falling down when the stuff does, oh, say, this?

Yes Trump could be elected, but things like this mostly suggest to me that the mass disinformation environment the country marinates in continues, and may be getting even worse. Imagine, if you can, the hysteria and 24/7 coverage if two Dem office-holders were physically attacked.

Delusional, and pearl-clutching, sorts went on for days and days about 72 "white supremacists" of dubious authenticity at a rally in C'ville (US senators even stated that some views were not protected by the constitution). People who want to be in charge, maintaining their lifestyle comfortably with the rest of the nation subjugated to them, uneducated, servile, and obedient.

How could that guy settle for "whitelash" when "crackalanche" was just there for the taking?

See, now that would have cracked me the hell up. I would have laughed along with that one. Whitelash is just... dumb.

--You can't stop people from aborting their babies. Coat hangers, back alleys, underground medical clinics -- it'll happen one way or another. Making it illegal doesn't stop it from happening -- it just drives it underground and endangers those who get them. They only humane solution: Make it legal.

-- You can't stop people from taking recreational drugs. The demand for them is too strong. People can grow their own pot, make their own meth, con opioids out of doctors. Impossible to control. Trying to classify drugs as illegal only creates a violent drug culture. The only sane solution: Legalize all drugs.

-- Guns can totally be banned! Just ban them! Once they're banned, they will cease to exist and disappear from society!! It will totally work!!!!!

When I occasion to watch videos of armed robberies from security cameras, almost inevitably the proactive, armed clerk or the armed bystander give the criminal all kinds of grief. The criminal fires wildly and panicked with shots and barrels flying all sorts of directions. Those who have been trained yet have never (or rarely) experienced actual armed assault methodically draw and fire on target with extreme, admirable control. And they often advance on the target even while ducking.

Maybe its just the videos I've seen, but the trained seemed to have an enormous performance edge even after surprise. I'm almost always in awe of how well they actually do. That is not easy. And that is the reward for lawful, determined practice.

Guy was about 6'3", 250 pounds, easy. He picked me up by the throat with one hand and threw me one the ground. When I went batshit crazy and started trying to claw his eyes out every time he leaned over me, screaming my head off, kicking his ankles as hard as he could, the situation changed. I wasn't fainting or begging or going defensive. I was ATTACKING. Badly, to be sure. Wildly and without a lot of coordination. But it became more trouble (and screaming) than it was worth and he ran away. I realized he could have a gun or a knife and realized at the same time I didn't care. I was going to kill him if I could. If he shot or stabbed me I didn't care. That makes a HUGE difference in that kind of situation.

I'm not saying there should be a religious test, certainly not. But I do see this as representative of the general schism in what's left of the movement, where we have a dominant "thought leader"/political/donor class which is in most significant ways opposed to the desires of the voter base.

329 As foolish as the anti-gun nuts sound, my issue is really more personal than that.

These clowns tell me that anyone who has been hospitalized for mental health issues should never be allowed to own a gun. Having been hospitalized for depression (when I tried to off myself, there were no guns involved), I am apparently not allowed to own a weapon.

So, on top of dealing with mental health issues (which are firmly under control, thank you), I am now an open target for attack and/or rape.

Does that make even the slightest bit of sense? Or does it only matter if the person in question is the mom/sister/daughter of the gun control nut?

355 Short of whether we have an individual right to nuclear weapons, the issue is simple. It's my right as a matter of liberty.

Yes there will be casualties of liberty: drowning deaths, car accidents, smoking deaths, deaths from obesity. And, if you are pro abortion, there are millions of deaths from your "liberty" to abort your fetus.

We should never accept that the "gun control" debate (lecture) is to be argued on the basis of what "approach will save the most lives."

Yes its good to point out that most "gun deaths" are suicides, and long guns (including so called "assault weapons" ) are responsible for a minuscule portion of those "gun deaths" much less all homicides, but I will never accept the moar safest = best course premise.

399 A little side note: Apparently there were many people at the recent Colorado Walmart shooting who had conceal carry weapons and they brought them out for defense. In fact, there were so many, authorities had a difficult time reviewing surveillance tapes to figure out who was the real perp. I don't know if any of the conceal carriers actually used their weapons.

467 Actually Aetius the only two-sided playing the Saudis have done was external, and masterfully pulled off - being passionate anti-Israel stalwarts (well, by donations and rhetoric), while simultaneously entrusting their external security entirely to Israel's main post-'67 patron, us. Other Gulf states did exactly the same. And we of course we masterfully played our side of that. One of the best foreign policy performances (spanning many administrations) in history, if not the best.

And now comes the part of the program where we launch into lurid but mostly incorrect tales of the Saudis creating the violent crazy jihadi currents that existed long before al-Saud rode his first camel, and in which the Egyptian-sourced Brotherhood and its offshoots has always been the leader (including in AQ itself). Bottom line: foreign policy is broken field running, and in the world's worst snake pit - the MidEast - even doing "OK" is a massive accomplishment.

SA is a primitive tribal kingdom, established through conquest and held together by intrigue, power, fear, and $$$$ - so of course there are currents and elements there inimical to us and our interests. But short of literally occupying the place a la WWII Germany, there's been little alternative to playing the flawed hand we were given, and it's been played very well.

Very little-known historical trivia:

One of the very worst -- if not the most prolific of all-time -- serial killers in American history was active in the 1790s. Not a typos -- shortly after the Revolutionary War. Forget they guy's name, but he went around raping and killing women, and his specialty was killing their babies by bashing their heads against trees. It was actually a team of two brothers, with one being the main killer.

This was 200 years before most people even knew what a "serial killer" was, and long before when people think they first appeared (1960s/'70s).

well, currently, anyone can. But unfortunately most people don't seem to.

You can get an annulment of your record (even if you served jail time for murder) if you petition the court. In my state, they are always (or every one I ever saw) granted.

Depends on the state, but its usually like 3-5 years after a misdemeanor conviction or 7-10 for a felony. Assuming you have not been arrested since then (or the clock starts over again)

Again, ask one of the survivors of their attacks whether they think restoring that right is a good idea.

many people lose the ability to drive, fly or be in the military through no fault of their own.

If you violated the social contract, then letting you loose is a calculated risk that society takes. Restoring gun rights is an incredibly stupid risk.

California briefly turned loose some vermin referred to as the 'pillowcase rapist'. He's linked to over 100 attacks, and they had to let him out (though he appeared to violate something). Even if he had not done so, giving him legal access to guns is insane.

CA law effective Jan. 1 will outlaw internet ammo purchases (without C and R, and special state certificate), and require a state ammo ID to buy in-person.

Barring good market responses (there are some possibilities, so far don't see much action), this is the biggest blow against firearms ownership so far in CA (up there with the handgun roster, another major infringement). Was waiting to check and see if the usual suspects were going to try to get a court injunction against the law before, or after, Jan. 1. Assume they will go all-out against the law, which is of course ridiculous (and was passed by a hefty popular vote, as a referendum item, BTW, and FFS!).

Ah, found them!

The Harpe Brothers:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harpe_brothers

Micajah "Big" Harpe, born Joshua Harper (before 1768 (probably, c. 174 - August 1799) and Wiley "Little" Harpe, born William Harper (before 1770 (probably, c. 1750) - February 8, 1804), were serial killers, murderers, highwaymen, and river pirates, who operated in Tennessee, Kentucky, Illinois, and Mississippi, in the late eighteenth century. The Harpes' crimes appear to have been motivated more by blood lust than financial gain. They are most likely the United States' first known serial killers, reckoned from the colonial era forward. Posted by: Blue Hen at November 06, 2017 03:28 PM (326rv)

Okay, but then we're back to my original point -- I don't think someone who has served their time should be a second class citizen.

If they are truly dangerous to society, then they should not be released on parole and should serve the full sentence. That's not for me, you, or the victims to decide -- it's for a jury of the accused (convicted)'s peers to decide on the length of sentence, and a parole board (with victim input if they so desire)'s decision if the person gets released early.

Once they are released and off parole, they are considered rehabilitated by the judicial system. They served their time.

"Gun advocates" as such have no position on prayer.
Many defenders of the 2nd A ---(I assume that's what he means by "gun advocates")--- are agnostic or atheist.
Many others, myself among them, would never maintain that "only prayer" can mitigate human evil.

And while we may believe that the Left's gun control policies are indeed futile, that hardly means we think "policy is futile" in mitigating evil.

This is a silly strawman argument, Frummy.

Posted by: Harry Paratestes

In your example, the guy was a convicted felon, and got caught when he knew that he shouldn't carry a firearm?

And that is supposed to convince me that the answer is to restore rights?

You need to do far better than that.

try this one: widow has to sell the family business after the death of her husband , is force into public assistance, and then is told that he rights and the rights of he family means nothing? The killer is getting out, AND he will be allowed to carry a gun (again).

better yet, ask the woman in Montana how she felt about her abductor and murderer of her friend being allowed out? He and his son shot her in the chest, and some of the bullet is still in there. A friend that was looking for her was shot to death. Ask her if Hhe should get his gun back.

Combine that with their love of no missile defense systems and you have a plan. Two sides of the same coin. If the victims debase themselves enough then the attackers will stop or something.

When the Russkies launch, everyone just lays down and takes a dump in their pants and waits for the end of the world.
And then we win, knowing that we did not stoop to their level.
Then Profit!

I'm saying that if a person is convicted of a crime, there is a penalty to that crime. Usually jail time, sometimes probation, sometimes fines. Usually determined in a plea deal, but theoretically by a jury of his peers.

After that penalty is serve, the person is now, in the eyes of the law, a rehabilitated person.

What, then, is the justification for the state imposing a further penalty (loss of rights, whether gun ownership or voting or whatever) beyond what the jury imposed?

We have the 7th amendment for a reason.

Banning things doesn't get rid of them. It merely ensures that only criminal organizations will be in charge of their manufacture and distribution.

Yes, I've been to several sentencing hearings in which the victim testified, and their testimony (presumably) swayed the judge in his/her sentencing.

This topic has got me thinking about the defensive use or not of firearms.

If you are ever in an "active shooter" situation and you have the choice to shelter in place (uh screw that) or get the hell out, GET OUT.

It's certainly possible to be completely trapped and unarmed, then shelter in place is all you can do really.

However, if you can get out/away from the shooter(s) do so.

You can bet your life on Johnny Dumbass who's "in charge" if you want to. Doesn't seem like a very good idea.

The U.S. Index on 0.12 per 5,000,000 shootings per capita places it behind Norway, Finland, Slovakia, Israel and Switzerland = at half the ratio. These top 5 countries also all have restrictive gun policies.

That's why I'm always yelling "We are not other countries!" Usually in caps.

These other countries arguments are chalk and cheese on so many, many, many levels.

If we had real journalism anymore, they'd point out these things. But we don't, and the ones we have appear to be stupid and/or have an agenda to push.

It infuriates me. Especially b/c I don't even hear the Right media & Congress members driving this message home.

Which is my whole point -- if a jury gives someone a sentence, who is the state to go ahead and impose an additional sentence on top of the original jury sentence afterwards by barring someone from owning a firearm and/or voting?

Right, well, and that kind of thing is usually who were talking about here.

Most murders or rapists aren't out walking the streets, off parole, and done with the justice system a few years after being convicted and sentenced. Many spend life (or close to it) behind bars, and when/if they do get out, they have many years of parole afterwards.

We're mostly talking about "low level" felons, as it were. Drug possession, Agg. DUI, and any number of other things that are BAD, yes, but I mean -- they served their time, no?

Or should we just treat people that do something wrong as second class citizens for their entire lives?

That mechanism already exists. It's called an annulment. And it covers every crime (yes, you can be a convicted murdered and still own a gun if you keep your nose clean for 10 years after parole is over)

In a perfect world, every one would submit a motion to annul as soon as they could.

But the problem I've seen multiple times is people who just... don't do it. Whether they forgot, or didn't know the law, or couldn't afford a lawyer, or whatever.

And so I've run in to probably a half dozen cases of people with decades old convictions who serve mandatory jail time because they failed to file the paperwork before they were in a car with a firearm present.

I don't think that's right.

I don't think someone should serve 6 months in jail (and probably lose their job, run in to serious financial difficulties, etc) because 30 years ago they broke in a neighbors garage and stole some beer or whatever.

Like yes, b&e is no joke -- very serious and very bad. But the crime they're convicted for now is like... a process violation. "oops, forgot to proactively send in a piece of paper."

Prison terms are not about rehabilitation; they're about punishment (no matter what the contemporary lingo might be). One area where the criminal has a HUGE advantage over the law abiding armed citizen is that he has no hesitation in pulling the trigger first. Which is why it's so important to stay alert, observe your surroundings and not walk around with your head up your ass. Anything you do to narrow the criminal's window of opportunity is of value.

So you think a system is just that allows a convicted and released violent rapist to fill out a piece of paper and get of all of his rights back, but a guy with a possession of marijuana charge from 1985 should be torn away from his family for 6 months if he's in the car with a buddy who has a .22 in the trunk?

...Keeping in mind that he will probably lose his job, his wife wont be able to pay the mortgage, he loses the house, the wife bangs the neighbor and his dear old grandma dies while he's in there and he cant go to the funeral? (Being a little extreme here, but I mean.. jail sucks.)

Our legal system functions under the idea that jail is for "rehabilitation."

I'm not saying I agree with it, but that's what every supreme court case for the past 100+ years has said the purpose of jail is every time it comes up, other than in a few Scalia dissents.

I started with "payed their debt to society" since it is a more neutral, and probably historically appropriate, term.

Posted by: Harry Paratestes at November 06, 2017 04:04 PM (wmaTe)

697 Just about time for a new post, so it's time for my mini-rant about the term "first responder."

See, the way things are supposed to work in the USA is that the people themselves are supposed to be the "first responders" to any emergency situation.

The public safety services (police, fire, etc.) can't be everywhere, as is proven every single time a crime occurs or a fire starts.

The public safety officials deserve support and thanks for what they do, but THEY ARE NOT "FIRST RESPONDERS"!!!

I heard somebody recently propose the hierarchy of what to do in such a situation as 1) run and if you can't run 2) hide and if you can't hide 3) fight. That seems pretty right to me unless I have someone besides myself to protect. If I do die in such a situation, I want my body found surrounded by expended brass.

710 Most murders or rapists aren't out walking the streets, off parole, and done with the justice system a few years after being convicted and sentenced.

Posted by: Harry Paratestes

1. "Most"? Hopefully that wasn't meant to be reassuring.
2. You keep equating "committing felonies" with "doing something wrong".
2. last year when MacCauliffe was using his auto pen to restore voting rights, it was noted that he wasn't just restoring that; he was restoring ALL rights, and that the group included people convicted of violent crimes.
3. We can note a difference between violent and nonviolent offenders. Please note that the example you cited was a felon who chose to violate yet another law. Even if we defer all such matters to "the state", he violated that. That isn't showing either good judgement or deference to "the state".

Petition for restoration on a case by case basis. Augment classifications of violent versus nonviolent felonies.

These would make sense.

717 If would be illustrative to look up when the term "paid his debt to society" was first used, and in what context. It sounds a little modern, to me.
"Reformer." Like from some 30's movie, fugitive from chain gang and all.

THERE WAS A DIFFERENCE in the 18th century between a misdemeanor and a felon. Once you were branded a felon, your life was supposed to change. Permanently, and after you were released from prison or cut down from the whuppin-post.
