I've Seen The Future of Fake News and It's Terrifying [Warden]

Could someone type a sentence into their computer and make those words come of your mouth?

Literally? No. Could they make someone else believe you said those words through digital manipulation? Yes. The technology is already here and it's coming to consumers soon.

I recently listened to a Radiolab podcast that revealed some new audio and visual technology that is certain to make divining the truth even more difficult in a digital media landscape that's already saturated with propaganda.

Radiolab is an excellent podcast--one of my favorites--but it's produced with a left leaning worldview so that all of the nefarious possibilities stemming from this technology coming to to the producers' and hosts' minds are, of course, Trump related.

While this is an eye rolling annoyance, I do encourage you to listen to the podcast because they're dead right in their broader concerns, even while being somewhat narrow minded in the particulars.

The first bit of technology that Radiolab features is a piece of audio software still under development by Adobe. For those of you who don't play around with digital imagery, Adobe is the market leader for audio and video editing software. They are the creators of Photoshop and a handful of other complimentary programs.

Recently, they've built a program that can replicate your speech patterns and tone almost precisely so long as they're able to capture at least 40 minutes of your speech (20 minutes for sub-optimal results). According to Adobe, within these 40 minutes you will produce every phonetic combination that their algorithm needs to reproduce the entire English language in your voice. The program accomplishes this by slicing, dicing and reassembling the speech that they've capture from you.

Recently, Adobe presented this technology at a tradeshow. The results are hair raising. With the required 40 minutes of recorded speech, they can literally type whatever they want into the program and reproduce it in the speaker's own words.

Now why would anyone ever create this software? Adobe says it's to make it easier to do Hollywood voiceover work. One of the most challenging aspects to movie making is capturing good audio from the actors. Much of it often has to be re-voiced after the film is shot. This is time consuming and often noticeable, as the acoustics are always different from the original shoot.

But you can imagine how this technology might be used not only in propaganda, but also for run-of-the-mill mischief. Imagine calling someone's wife and creating an entire maliciously fake conversation from her "husband."

So maybe you're thinking, Well, that's just audio, right? I mean, the scope of deception is pretty limited.

Yeah. Now check this out. You can now digitally alter someone's face in real time using a web came and a greenscreen type mask. Yes, the deception is still detectible... for now. Imagine where we'll be in a few years.

Here's the Radiolab example from their podcast.

As I said, not quite there but close enough to see where it's going.

The most interesting thing about the Radiolab podcast was when they interviewed one of the people who are developing this technology and inquired about the greater implications of doing so.

The woman they talked to had no answer for them. She clearly hadn't thought much about it and seemed annoyed when they persisted in this direction of questioning. Her attitude was pretty much, well SOMEONE will figure it all out.

I've had a similar experience with my brother-in-law. He's literally a programming genius who dropped out of college to work for a company that develops smart home technology.

I'm constantly trying to engage him on the social and cultural implications of technological advances that I read about in the news. He consistently shrugs me off--he's considered none of it, not even privacy issues. That's not how he's wired. All he wants to do is solve the problem in front of him. The rest of it is someone else's issue.

I don't expect him to actually do anything about it, but I'm deeply bothered by his nonchalance. We're hurtling at break neck speed into uncharted territory. No generation before has experienced such a rapidly changing world, and it seems that the people pushing the boundaries never give a moment's thought to any potential negative effects or hazard of doing so.

And of course there will be downsides. How can there not be? You can't undo thousands of years of evolution and societal conditioning in a few years. We're simply not built for this.

The other day I had a conversation with my brother about drone technology, self driving cars, automated food preparation and other new inventions that are in the works. He made a comment that stuck with me. "They keep telling us this stuff will make our lives better, but it hasn't."

I think he's right. I don't see fewer life stresses, more leisure time or a richer life experience being generated from this new digital world we're in. The problem is that there doesn't seem to be any way to pause and think any of this over. We're stuck with whatever they lay on us. It's an unfortunate side effect of capitalism, globalism and the basic human failings of greed and hubris. Hopefully we can adjust.

So having the private key to the coding, you could play back a true recording of your words, and the beeps would decode.

Like the internet of things. Yeah, it's cool to control your light switches and monitor your front porch via your front port or the sitter from your smartphone, but....that means someone else will be able to, too. Maybe some legitimately, some hackers.

President Trump can simply dispatch some Federal Marshalls to drag that judge out of the courthouse, and deliver him to the House of Representatives, who can hold the sonofabitch in the House Jail, pending a successful Motion of Impeachment.

Let him out on bail for his Senate Trial, and give him a fair trial before returning him to his home courthouse, stripped of all title, payroll, pension and bereft of most of his Civil Rights, as befalls the average felon.

Yes and no. The rate of change in, for lack of a better term, life control is a problem. Twenty years ago, once you left work, except for very few people, you were done for the day. Maybe it's because I'm old enough to see at least a minor span of technological change but I must disagree. This stuff does make our lives better, although 'better' can mean different things to different people.

I was at the VA last year or so ago and this young vet was coming in for a re-fitting of his prosthetic leg since it was causing him considerable discomfort and evidently adjustments had to be made from time to time. He could run with that thing. Run. Technological advances sure made his life better.

I worked at a major pharmaceutical research laboratory a few years ago, got to know several of the scientists there on at least a passing basis. One of them told me a cure (!) for certain especially lethal types of cancer will probably be available in less than ten years--in even less time if they somehow managed to streamline the process through the FDA.

The polio that terrorized the public in my father's day and that crippled my aunt for life? Gone. Smallpox? Gone.

Point is, we've become accustomed to miracles and wonders. Or maybe we're just not adapting well to the changes these advances bring. I don't know. I do know life is better for lots of people than it otherwise would be.

Interesting you bring that up. They talked to a digital forensics expert on the podcast. He says he could catch about 80% of cleverly done fakes, but it takes a hell of a lot of man-hours to accomplish it.

There are already driverless trucks in use in Europe, Germany I think.

As a pilot myself, no way in hell would my happy ass ever be on a pilotless plane. There are way too many failures that could occur that would indicate x is the problem, when experience and training tell a pilot that z is the actual problem.

A machine programmed to react to problem x could rapidly turn a plane load of passengers into puree 30k feet below in a 40' smoking hole.

I couldn't help thinking, "Well, they're talking about self-driving cars, how about self-driving stretchers?"

Seriously, that would seem to be much easier than self-driving cars. There's less traffic in hospital corridors, and much lower speeds.

She could not grasp that it wasn't that he didn't care that my mother was dying; he simply understood there was nothing he could do about it so why get into a big uproar about the whole thing.

It's the same thing with your brother-in-law; all he's interested in is how to make these things. Once they are made, it's on to the next project. It's up to others to figure out how these new things will be used and their use governed.

I wonder if the remainder of my life (I'm 29) will see changes to the lot of the average man anything like as rapid or dramatic as those of Churchill's generation, but so far social media and smaller computers seem like a rounding error in comparison to that.

I remember those early Vonnegut books, and they were the best. I happened to be browsing Daddy's bookcase in 1971, and picked up Slaughterhouse Five. It sounded like a grim book, but I was desperate for something to read. Boy, was I surprised! I became an instant fan, and read everything he'd written up to that point. Even went to see him at Wheaton College when he appeared there.
My all-time favorite is probably Cat's Cradle (probably read it 100 times). I think I'll reread it - it's been ages.

It's a great book. Very memorable. IIRC, one of the things in the story was how the Army ended up being a wastebasket for the unemployed, you joined, got a meager wage and were set to busywork. It became virtually welfare. They didn't dare give them weapons, let alone train them. Also the main character's job was replacing people with automation, or simply downsizing. He was a fan of the progress. Until his job was replaced with a machine. Ouch.

I don't trust any of the industry critics anymore. These shows have such big budgets that I think a lot of walking money gets spread around. Only if the shows are absolute dogs to you see the negative review.

Plus, I think the show is such a niche show that it gets the positive reviews from viewers because most people have never watched it.

Yeah, that was FOX's fault. He's always been very good...they've only recently realized it. I didn't watch FOX for quite a while but I find myself switching to it more often and am glad to see Gregg Jarrett on more and more shows.

271 Hmm, not sure what ".357 mag" is on about - I assume just joshing - but the 38spl is a standard light load I use for plinking and steels matches. It's perfect out of a Model 66/4 inch. Actually using up my Trail Boss powder, so they're very light on recoil. Dirty, but meh, lead, always dirty.

And .357 is not allowed for the matches, and there's no reason to use it anyway.

My favorite factory .357 Magnum load is the Winchester Silvertip 145 gr. variant. Hard as hell to find, and at over $2 per shot, not a practice round, might we say?

Out of my S&W Model 28, it's laser beam accurate, has very controllable recoil characteristics which allow for fast follow up shots, and it's also a very clean burning recipe of ??? inside the case.

I'd like to be able to work up a near duplicate to the loading. I can accept buying premium components, as the reloads still won't be anywhere near the wallet-chewing nightmare which is the WW offering.

Out in exotic-ville, I'd actually like to get an oscilloscope reading of the recoil rise-time, peak and duration factors, and even work up a home-brew round to reasonably well track the "feel" of the factory rounds.

Folks, this is a very shootable .357 round, which still had good velocity, and at 145 gr., splits the difference between the lightweight screamers and 158 gr. rounds, which at .357 pressures, hit on both ends of the gun.

I'm not throwing a gauntlet as a challenge, but am seriously looking to get some good, close starting points to at least be close to the right on-ramp.

300 gNewt, I was referring only to .357's utility in steel matches, where it's not allowed because the power only means more damage to targets and more ricochet fun (and control is harder for the shooter, besides). Lots of uses for it otherwise. Funny you mention the revolver/lever rifle combo, as I have been mulling which caliber I'll get when I finally get a lever rifle. .357 would mean I could do all my own loads with no additional equipment. But 45 Colt calls to me, for some reason (and I don't have a 45LC revolver, either ...... yet).

Jim, I think many factory loads are hard to duplicate since the powders used are not those we can buy for ourselves. But people usually can find a way to duplicate them.

I'd check out the reloading forums for SilverTip duplication loads. And if you aren't a member, join and ask the question. Seems there is always someone out there who knows. The High Road is my favorite, but there are several others.
