That was part of it, but the system was so messed up, that even with a free market, there would've been a lot of hungry people.
Best course of action would've been reforms *before* the crop crises, but once they hit, I'm not sure there was a right way to go. There were terrible options, though, and those seemed to be the ones taken.

There's a bit missing there -- the French grocers aren't willing to pay more for butter, apparently. In most of the US, grocers sell milk and eggs at a loss. The won't raise the sale price (to remain competitive), but they do pay the dairies enough to stay in business and to maintain the domestic market.

Pre-Revolutionary France wasn't IIRC really socialist, but it did have a lot of ridiculous taxes and internal customs fees and duties.
Things like trade barriers and tariffs and diversity of produce play role, too.
But like I said, supply and demand. If there is literally not near enough food for everyone, that is a very serious problem. (Yes, imports, but those take time, and we're hungry now.)
I would think that refrigeration and modern food storage techniques and technology are bigger helps than the economic system after a certain point.

Well for various reasons.
Gateway Pundit pulls the trigger too soon on stories without verifying them or digging to see if real
Infowars is mostly crazy ranting and conspiracy theories, but it has a few gems too. And sometimes the ranting crazy turns out to be accurate.
Zerohedge is usually pretty good in its content but has godawful crazy in the comments.

I made a lazy point.
You are of course correct. It is a relatively free market. But my point is that the French grocers do not recognize market forces and are simply refusing to buy a product their customers want. If it were a closed system they might have some pricing power, but the market for butter is essentially the entire world, so the producers can simply shift to foreign markets that are willing to pay market price.

I read some about a famine in the late Roman Empire (right after Constantine). Five, six years of drought in Syria. Antioch needs food, but there's none around. Most food is consumed with 1 day's journey of where it's grown -- and that's about 15 miles. Over land, it takes 6 days to move freight 100 miles.
Arranging for shipments from over seas -- but still within the empire's borders -- took most of a year.
So transportation helps, a lot. Communication helps.

"Free Market" concepts within borders has merits, but government oversight CAN be useful, and/or essential. Nation-states exist for good reason ... the "globalists" prefer to turn us all into consumer units that but what they can conveniently package in commie places with slaves and pollution and no labor laws.
Foreign mystery fish with mystery injections or drug treatments, or just the drugs themselves ... even Boeing is now outsourcing bits and pieces. Globalists have a new world order plan to eliminate the problems we dissenters cause. Maintaining borders/language/culture will be a fight.

Here's a great one instead:
naturalfake's White Chili
2 largish onions
1 orange bell pepper
6 cloves of garlic
3 lbs of skinless, boneless thigh meat cut into roughly inch pieces
1 can of cannellini beans
1 can of great northern beans
1 can of golden hominy
3/4 16 oz jar of Frontera Salsa Tomatillo
1 can of El Paso Chopped Green Chilies
1 tbs cumin
1.5 tsp ground coriander
1 tsp ancho chili powder
Salt and pepper to taste
Saute onions, garlic, and bell pepper till just starting to go soft in oven proof pot.
Add everything else (use liquid in bean cans, dump out liquid in hominy can).
Stir at this point the chili will be somewhat thick. Don't worry water will come out of the ingredients as they cook and leave you with a consistency like a thick soup.
If you're worried or it's too thick at the start use chicken stock to the consistency you like.
Cook at 220 for 4-5 hours, raise temp to 230 for the last hour. (you can cook longer if you like)
Should work fine in a slow cooker.
Serve with sour cream and fresh chopped cilantro.

There is a study or two that shows that high cholesterol correlates to low risk of stroke, and ppl with low cholesterol die sooner.
Something like that.
Cholesterol is actually a way your body protects you. Inflammation is the killer.

10 plum tomatoes, halved lengthwise
1 jalapeno chili halved(seeded if desired)
1 onion peeled and halved
4 garlic cloves peeled
2 pound boneless ,skinless chicken thighs cut into half inch cubes
quarter cup chili powder
2 canned chipolte chilies in adobo sauce finely chopped
1 and three quarter cups chicken stock
1 15 oz can of kidney beans drained
pre-heat broiler with rack 3 inches from heat source. Arrange tomatoes, jalapeno,onion,garlic cut side down in rimmed baking sheet
broil till starting to char, about 5 minutes.Pulse tomatoes and jalapeno in blender or food processor until chunky
Heat a large skillet over medium high heat. Add oil. Working in batches brown chicken, allowing to sear stirring for 5-6 min.
Reduce heat to medium add onion, and garlic to pan. Cook until soft about 8 minutes. Add chili powder add salt to taste. Cook stirring for 1 min.. Stir in chipoltes,and add chicken .Cook scraping up browned bits until fully incorporated, about 3-5 min..Stir in stock.simmer for 20 min.. Add beans simmer for 10 min.. Serve with desired toppings

Instead of another woman, the daughter found pictures and video of herself - naked and undressing in the privacy of her bedroom and bathroom.
The SunSentinel reports that investigators eventually found more than 2,500 images taken by two cameras - one concealed in a wall socket in her bedroom, and another in an AC adapter in the shared bathroom.
Sunrise police say 48-year-old Matthew Bordeaux, who has lived with the mother and daughter "as a family" for seven years, was jailed on charges of video voyeurism.

I was born and raise in Upstate New York. I have basically known about Donald Trump my entire adult life, and while no fan of his, I did vote for him because I felt he was the best out of the field. His PT Barnum-esque presentation style just rubs me the wrong way. I'll get over it.

about 8 cloves garlic
A large frying pan you don't give a crap about and isn't teflon, because you'll die of pulmonary hemorrhage otherwise.
About half a small glug of vegetable oil. No more.
Heat up the oil on medium high.
put the chicken in the pan with the garlic. Keep moving around the chicken until it is thoroughly cooked. The skin will be brown black and shrivelled off. The garlic should be pretty much burnt to shit but the chicken will be OK.

didn't seem to matter to voters, that he sounded much more genuine than

Seconded. Can't stand to listen to more than 2 seconds of Obama. I've never seen or felt anything objectionable about Trump in any of the speeches or rallies he's given. He's a very competent orator.
But I do believe that lots of people feel an aversion to him for whatever reason. I feel like the guy who likes cilantro, liver and Brussel sprouts, and sees people who hate it. I believe them, but I can't relate to their impressions/perceptions at all. And I keep hoping they are not emotional enough for it to cause them to reject him, because he's the one piloting the life boat.

278 Here's a good chicken chili recipe:
10 plum tomatoes, halved lengthwise
1 jalapeno chili halved(seeded if desired)
1 onion peeled and halved
4 garlic cloves peeled
2 pound boneless ,skinless chicken thighs cut into half inch cubes
quarter cup chili powder
2 canned chipolte chilies in adobo sauce finely chopped
1 and three quarter cups chicken stock
1 15 oz can of kidney beans drained
pre-heat broiler with rack 3 inches from heat source. Arrange tomatoes, jalapeno,onion,garlic cut side down in rimmed baking sheet
broil till starting to char, about 5 minutes.Pulse tomatoes and jalapeno in blender or food processor until chunky
Heat a large skillet over medium high heat. Add oil. Working in batches brown chicken, allowing to sear stirring for 5-6 min.
Reduce heat to medium add onion, and garlic to pan. Cook until soft about 8 minutes. Add chili powder add salt to taste. Cook stirring for 1 min.. Stir in chipoltes,and add chicken .Cook scraping up browned bits until fully incorporated, about 3-5 min..Stir in stock.simmer for 20 min.. Add beans simmer for 10 min.. Serve with desired toppings

At the risk of getting willowed, he was a complete, total asshole to some workers who were setting up bounce houses for our big shindig tonight which is supposed to be an alternate to Halloween, but really isn't.
He went out there and started throwing his weight around by saying he's the pastor, then just ripped into those guys for, in my opinion, nothing. He accused them of putting ruts in the soccer fields, which "we've paid thousands and thousands to make nice" when all they did was smush the grass where they drove their trucks. No biggie...I looked.
He then proceeded to call them names: "stupid" and "idiot" are two that I know of. It was embarrassing and infuriating. After he left, I was ordered to go take pics of the "ruts" so when I did I profusely apologized to the guys involved.
They said no problem, but no, there was no excuse. One guy even said "the worst part was when he said he was the pastor." The guy completely ruined our testimony to them and all the people they're gonna tell.
Pastor has a history of doing this, and it's just another example of the hypocrisy that is that church. I want no part of them other than a paycheck.

I heartily support anyone wrecking soccer fields. A-hole soccer players routinely play in grass baseball outfields, which they ruin because there are so many guys running in the same places, i.e., in front of the goals.
They play on the baseball fields, despite having adjacent artificial turf soccer fields, because they claim the artificial turf (which is perfectly fine; some baseball fields here have it) hurts their precious little toes.

Sorry to hear that. Yes; It makes his witness look bad, but pastors are all sinners in need of God's grace. I have a friend who had a meltdown at his church and threw people out of his office. Since that one incident he's been fine-Went for a renewal leave for a month and turns out he had OCD which can cause irritability if untreated , Since then, he's been at another church for about 15 years and doing great . If the pastor has habit of it then someone from the church should speak to him about it..

I know we're all sinners and have our moments, but this guy just goes completely over the cliff. There's just no excuse for a pastor to act like he does when things aren't going exactly as he thinks. None whatsoever, sorry.
And this is one of those churches where you don't just have "someone speak to him about it." Any hint of not being totally on board more often than not will find oneself booted out.
Supposedly the elders are a check on him, but they're all in his pocket. One elder once asked to see the books, and he was flat out told no. Shortly thereafter, it was suggested to him that he "move on."
I'm gonna look at the new elders list, but at this point I don't trust anyone in authority there, and I can't afford to lose my job right now.

Sounds like he might be a narcissist. Unfortunately there are a number of them in the pastorate. Is the polity that he can be asked to leave as opposed to a denominational head having to make that happen?

This is a nondenominational church. He runs the show. He's not leaving until he's good and ready. There's a rumor he may retire after our newest kids building is built next summer, but who knows.
I also think he won't leave until he has ALL the elders in his pocket to nominate his son to be the next pastor. So far he's tried twice to get his son appointed, but the elders have shot him down both times.
That's the only time I know of where they've stood up to him. But each year the elders change, and imho he's just trying to wait them out 'til he gets his way.
Yeah, I'm a bit cynical about this place. I wouldn't be here if I had any other reasonable option.

You don't give them a choice whether to read your book or not.
You get bad lit teachers to assign bad lit to (mostly bad) students.
This may make them hate literature for a lifetime, and constantly make war on humanities majors. But by god it sells paperbacks.
I think there may be special agent points if the author has already offed himself.

Now see, Prof. Chaos, this is exactly why I too think CBD should do it. I think a male perspective on fashion would be very, very interesting. And by "male" I mean the red-blooded he-man kind of males we have here at the HQ, not the wimps in the fashion industry.

I will have to find that week of fashion in art for you. At the end of it, CBD showed us the suit he wore for his wedding, which is now actually at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. He was quite the dandy in his day.
