Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | ALL AMERICAN ONTHi gang! Remember how yesterday I said I was going to be busy? Well, it's 9:00 PM, I've just finished working for the day, I haven't even turned on game 3 of the World Series yet and haven't touched the ONT, so this one is going to be short but sweet. To compensate, this ONT is.... 53 YEARS AGO TODAY Ronald Reagan gave his famous “A time for choosing” speech. If you've never listened to the speech, you should. It's 30 minutes long, but it's 30 minutes you really should spend.IMO this is one of the finest speeches in American history. What's scary is exactly how relevant it still is today. 50 years later, and all of these problems are still with us. It's our fault, all of us. Reagan said we have to choose. Over the past 50 years, we have. Sometimes we've gone towards limited government and ordered liberty, but all too often... SPEAKING OF SPEECHES This one always brings a tear to my eye. Literally. If I'm drunk it brings several. Please watch this. It's only a couple of minutes long, but that last line. Wow. So proud. WE'RE NOT ICELAND Real courage doesn't always come on the battlefield. Sometimes, rarely, it can be found in Congress. Of course, usually when it is it isn't coming from Congress, but to them. Like this:
I won't be made to ever feel ashamed… …that I'm American made FIDO FRIDAY A CANADIAN'S OPINION This is from the 70s. Gordon Sinclair was a famous Canadian journalist, back when that meant something. If you remember the early 70s, with the anti-war movement reaching its zenith, there was a lot of anti-American sentiment being featured nonstop by the quislings in the media. Sinclair felt compelled to speak out against it. Believe it or not, this was actually released as a single, and it went to #24 on the Billboard Hot 100. GREATEST PHOTOS OF THE AMERICAN WEST We live in a beautiful land. Sorry about the video heavy ONT, but I wanted to give y'all some good content, and that's the easiest way to do it in a limited time. The Yahoo Group says “America, fuck yeah!” Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1
I grew up right near that All American.

I tell everyone I can who was alive during the Reagan years just how lucky we are. Few of our presidents have been great, Reagan is right there with Lincoln and the Founding Fathers. Moreover, when Reagan served it was also the time of Maggie Thatcher and Saint Pope John Paul II, each among the greatest leaders of their people. Remarkable times!

I will wager that an All American cheeseburger, fries and chocolate shake, are superb examples of that classic All American fare.
That looks to be the kind of place that you make a 500 mile detour for, on a road trip. Speaking of great fare, tonight, I cooked two of the finest steaks I've ever enjoyed. 1 in. Sirloins, with absolutely perfectly baked potatoes, the kind that results in that perfect, chewy, buttery, salty skin. Loaded those with butter n' shredded cheddar. The steaks were perfect from the skillet, with a slight char on the outside, and a precise "medium" pink through the middle. Simple, but secret seasonings. Perfection. So very tender, I could literally cut 'em with a fork, and did for a couple bites, just to prove it out. Juicy, too. So much so that I swam individual bites of that aforementioned 'tater though the puddled juices. Just DAMN, but I dined like a King, tonight. Oh, and cold beer besides. Cheers, Horde! Oh, and I earned that steak dinner tonight.
Spend the day in the 3 ft. crawlspace under the house, not only replacing all of the 2 in. sanitary drain lines, but installing 'em in an entirely different layout, one that the original plumbing contractor should've used when the house was built in '08. The original layout lacked sufficient slope, and also had far too many bends, corners, complicated junctures and "etc." This caused the rate of flow to be insufficient to move heavier sediments, fats, laundry lint, etc, down the lines. And hence, for a second time, the 2 in. system stopped up completely, killing the kitchen sink and laundry drains. There's now a far more "straight line" system below decks, split into two separate branches leading to the 3 in. main, and both with in-line cleanout caps at the furthest end of each branch. In short, it's a maintainable system, not depending on "repairs" to keep running, even if another clog might occur. Which, it won't. Got the slopes right, and eliminated all of the jigsaw puzzle routing. Now, doing this for five hours with an f*kd up shoulder and sciatica from hell in my left hip... I'm enjoying relaxing after dinner, with another cold beer, chillin' in the recliner, heating pad on shoulder, two aspirin in muh bellah, and the Astros on, hopefully showing LA "whut fo!" Racked with pain or not, I'm calling his one "a good day." Hope y'all each enjoyed a Good Day, too. Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at October 27, 2017 10:41 PM (QzJWU) 107

www.archives.gov is an official site, right? Because there's kinda big news over at zerohedge
http://preview.tinyurl.com/yd8v44xj I don't know about the conclusions made in the rest of the article, but that document is as legit as archives.gov (which I assume is, given the .gov address). The document indicates Ruby was Oswald's partner (which I had assumed but I don't now if it had been stated), and more significantly that JFK took a bullet from the front indicating multiple shooters. *this* one, "a good day"
/edit LA Sue. You might think it sacrilege, but I'm using black pepper, McCormick's "Perfect Pinch" in the "Steak" labeling, and garlic powder, in a 1-2-1 distribution by volume. Sautee the steaks in unsalted butter, turning frequently so as to prevent excessive char on a given side. About 2/3 to 3/4 of the available heat on the burner. About when the steak is 3/4 done, a bout 1/4 cup of beer, in the pan and over the steak. Just enough time for it to cook off, but it results in a perfectly caramelized butter crust on each side of the steak. The McCormick's has all the saltiness needed to balance the sweetness of the butter n' beer. The black pepper and garlic powder simply speak for themselves. This truly is a "one up" on the classic "salt & pepper" purity test. Awesome results, but not "overseasoned", by any measure. It just WORKS. there's also a theory that when identical twins are not both gay or both straight that it can be due to trauma in the womb that affects one but not the other. the environment in the womb can be very different for twins. the interesting thing about that theory is it means homosexuality might be caused by fetal trauma - which means it could be a birth defect. we know how fond the left is of babies with birth defects.

It's likely both nature and nurture, as is the case with a lot of things. One interesting thing is homosexuality correlates with fraternal birth order. The number of baby girls doesn't matter, but if you're the second male, the chances are greater, and if you're the third males, the chances are even greater and so on. And the effect is the strongest among right-handed men. The hypothesis is this is due to an immune response from the mother. The female body doesn't "like" the male hormone environment in the womb when a baby boy is developing, and they think that with each boy, the prenatal hormone levels may be decreased by the mother's reaction. Something like that. Now, with women and lesbianiss, there is no such observed relation. Posted by: publius, the Persistent Poperin Pear at October 27, 2017 10:57 PM (8O3HH) 152

Been sitting here for a while, trying to sum up the profound emotions I'm experiencing because of this thread. Kinda boils down to one thing: I fucking love this country, warts and all.
Serving in the military is something the men in my clan have done since America was a colony. Mmy dad was a Marine, as was one of my brothers. I and two other brothers were Army. My baby brother saw three tours in Iraq, one in 2003 with the 82nd Airborne. He is now a Black Hawk pilot in the Montana Guard. This desire to serve in my clan is in no small way born of a deep, abiding love of this country, and it's more than just the dream of the Republic. It is enjoying the freedom of taking a road trip to see the towns, the rivers, the mountains, the coasts, the thunderstorms, the wild horses in the Pryor Mountains. America. Fuck. Yeah. Oh. And may the Lord bless and protect President Donald Trump and his family. Posted by: Pug Mahon, Waiting for Winter at October 27, 2017 11:05 PM (1Nq6i) 169

There used to be a place in Aurora, CO called the Coachlight Inn. We used to go there back in the sixties when I was a young tyke. They had the drive-up with waitresses in roller skates bring out the food. My favorite was sort of like a Big Mac, with fries and a shake. Really sloppy burger, but it was the best. Sadly, it and the rest of the entire neighborhood has been gone now for the better part of twenty years. Now it's just the barrio where English is not the preferred language.

But it's still there and open (money laundering probably)... We used to have Kip's Big Boy, here in TX. Might still be one around. Also, A Griff's Hamburgers. 502 There used to be an A and W up on Colfax and Moline St. There was a little miniature golf place right behind it. Us kids would go up, play a couple of games and go get a big frosty mug of A and W Root Beer. Then we would sit around and chug it just to see who could belch the longest without throwing up. What? We were kids.

Posted by: Donna&&&&V sez: Sorry Tribe fans. Go Astros! at October 28, 2017 01:06 AM (P8951) Want to know an interesting factoid? Little Caesars has one of the more distinctive pizza sauces. They make all of their sauce during the tomato harvest in California. So all the sauce they use throughout the year is made in a month and a half (sometimes 2 months- depends on how the weather is and how long the tomatoes stay good in the fields.) It is called fresh pack sauce. It gives it a slightly different taste than standard pizza sauce made with tomato paste that has been packaged and stored- little bit more green and floral is the only way I can describe it. So the current reporting is that WFB had nothing to do with the dossier. A and W were the "middle of the road" root beer franchise. Back in the day when each city had its own soda-pop brands, each town had its favorite "stands" that would be a local-only chain. There was a wide range of tastes in root beer; a lot of it was not very sweet.
There was a chain called Frostop -- I'm sure there are some survivors. Car-window service, chilled mugs that got stolen a lot. Something special was the take-out/carry-out/takeaway container. It was a cone, made of the same heavy waxed paper that used to be used for milk cartons. The shape allowed a cardboard tab insert to close the top. After it was empty, you could press the plain disc out of the bottom and use it as a megaphone. That's just how dull our lives were. In the late 70's I used to have work-lunch, night shift, at a porcelain-coated remnant of the Triangle Lunch System. It's hard to find any history on them, but from some pictures I've seen, they easily predate road diners and the various White chains. there's an A and W in Paso still, but it's down on 23th, by the 101, where the Black Oak coffee shop used to be, not on Spring, where it belongs. of course, the Ralphs across the street closed back in '06ish, so maybe they re-developed the area?

There used to be a place in downtown Denver called the Old Spaghetti Factory, built in the old trolley barn. I remember, for example, that on a trip back east in 1977, the only way to buy corn tortillas was in a can. My encounters with Chi Chi's were all in the early 1980's. Ugh. I seem to remember you live near LA, and I did a quick web search and was surprised to see that El Burrito Jr., a pretty good taco stand that I remember from the 1990's, is still in business. On Pacific Coast Highway in Redondo Beach. Not the best or most authentic Mexican food in the Universe (the really good places that I could recommend are all in other parts of the country), but pretty darned good for fast food. If you are looking for recommendations to get you through your Chi Chi's ennui, that is. Posted by: HTL at October 28, 2017 02:37 AM (Iyxe4) 681

levels. Hands down and by a mile, the worst Mexican food I have ever eaten. Canned, bland and now (thankfully) banned. Worst Mexican food I've ever had in a restaurant is Serrano's here in AZ. So we're talking about defunct fast food franchises.
Here are two: When I was a wee lad, a Cub Scout, we took a tour of the local Carroll's, a hamburger chain that supposedly had Mohammad Ali as a main backer. Their food was crap. Another one I remember existed for a short time was a pizza chain called Milton's. Their pizza was terrible. It was obvious they had no blind tastings to find out if the pizza was any good or not. And it was a big NOT! As for Shakey's, I loved them back in my pre and high school days. The player pianos, the showing of old movie serials, the family seating on really small (uncomfortable) wooden seats, and the mugs of root beer. Shakey's had a great all-you-can-eat lunch and the place was popular for high school date night. I always found Shakey's Pizza to have a spicier red sauce than the other existent pizza chains. Going to Shakey's was a cheap, entertaining night out. Posted by: RickZ at October 28, 2017 02:46 AM (mieyZ) 699

Speaking of AM radio, back when I was driving over the road I used to do most of my driving at night, mostly because I'm a night owl (I'm here aren't I) but less traffic. I would tune into stations like KTNN (The Voice of the Navajo Nation), KOA (Denver), KOMA (Oklahoma City) and others. Mostly C and W, but some rock and some talk. Back then it was really interesting what you could pick up on AM. Most FM stations didn't last that long because they didn't have the wattage but these guys were hitting 50,000 watts or more.

Posted by: texcat at October 28, 2017 03:06 AM (wf3RQ) AM radio simply worked better in the '60's. I remember as a kid, growing up in Vancouver, B.C., I had a big old 12-tube radio. It had a magic-eye tube, and a slide rule dial that was dead-nuts on. If you tuned it to, say, 1220, it was receiving a station at 1220. Not 1210 or 1230. An observation:
A few weeks ago, I was watching a Spanish language channel's coverage of a football match. What I found interesting was one commercial in particular. We've all see those 'get tax relief from the IRS' ads where they mention all the things the IRS can do to delinquent paying taxpayers like garnishing your wages, seizing bank accounts, placing liens on property and the like. All familiar stuff. But this one ad in Spanish cracked me up. It, too, was about owing the IRS and a company offering tax relief with all the familiar dire things the IRS can do (and mentioned above). However, there was a big one added that is never mentioned in the English ads and that particular IRS action was the main thrust of the ad: The cancellation of one's passport. The ad even came with an image of an open US passport and a large rounded wooden stamp with 'Cancelled' on it dramatically rolled/stamped onto said passport. Two Americas.
