#FusionCollusion: 10 Facts About the Steele Dossier That Liberal Reporters Must Finally Acquaint Themselves With

Actually, they probably are acquainted with much of this. The problem is, they're all great chums of FusionGPS head Glenn Simpson, as Mollie Hemingway notes, and perhaps are compromised as far as reporting the whole truth about the information op their buddy ran against Trump on behalf of Hillary Clinton (and perhaps a foreign client to be named later...?).

7) Fusion GPS' ties to media are problematic

The principals at Fusion GPS are well connected to mainstream media reporters. They are former journalists themselves, and know how to package stories and provide information to push narratives. They are, in fact, close friends with some of the top reporters who have covered the Russia-Trump collusion story.

Fusion GPS has placed stories with friendly reporters while fighting Congressional investigators’ attempts to find out the group’s sources of funding. Fusion GPS leaders have taken the 5th and fought subpoenas for information about the group's involvement with Russia. Their close friendships with key reporters on these stories have paid huge dividends for the firm, although these friendships and cooperative relationships have not served the public well.

...

Fusion GPS was responsible for the dossier. But the group's larger narrative push to reporters is even more influential, and a difficult story to unpack due to defensiveness, embarrassment, and outright media complicity.

Have any of the people working on this recused themselves from reporting on it due to their compromised position with respect to their great friend Glenn Simpson? Or have they decided to chuck that part of journalistic ethics out the window, too?

Must read piece that re-capitulates the most important points about this affair.

There's so much in here (all ten points, actually) worth excerpting, but I'll just quote one more: My old hobbyhorse.

Why did Comey "brief" Trump on the dossier?

As I've long suggested: This was a fake briefing to give the dossier a "news hook" so that CNN could and would report it. The dossier was unverified, which is why no one would touch it; but then Comey "briefed" Trump about it, giving CNN an excuse to talk about a document which was itself unverified and in places provably false.

Was this entire point of the briefing? Just so Comey and Clapper could get CNN to report on this?

Jim Comey personally briefed Trump on the dossier, shortly before CNN reported it

As confirmed by the Washington Post, the Russia-Trump collusion narrative was a Clinton campaign political operation. The dossier itself was shopped around by Fusion GPS a year ago to the New York Times, the Washington Post, Yahoo News, the New Yorker, and CNN, according to lawyers for the ex-spy who worked on the dossier. The dossier was so unverifiable that the only reporter to bite was from Mother Jones.

What really got the ball rolling on the last year's Russia-Trump conspiracy theory, then, was not the dossier itself but the briefing of it by Obama intelligence chiefs to President-elect Trump in January. Jim Comey admitted under oath that DNI Clapper asked him to personally brief President Trump about this dossier. The fact of that meeting was quickly leaked to CNN.

Given the dossier's many problems, was the entire purpose of the meeting to produce the leak that the meeting happened? No one was biting on the dossier and it needed legitimization by opponents of Trump. If the dossier was so shoddy that it was debunked in hours after BuzzFeed posted it in all its salacious glory, why brief the president and president-elect on it, much less leak it? What was the real purpose of that meeting, and that leak to CNN?

Someone on Twitter, I think Sean Davis, asked: Did Comey tell Trump that the dossier itself came from Hillary Clinton's camp? If not, why not?

I'll answer his question for him: No, Comey hid this from Trump.

I'm 99.99% sure of that. How am I sure of it?

Because if Comey had told Trump "This dossier came from a rival candidate's oppo research efforts," is it even faintly plausible Trump would have refrained from Tweeting that out immediately?!

No, that's not plausible.

So Comey "briefed" the president without telling him it was a Clinton document.

Here's why I speculate he withheld that:

Precisely because he didn't want the planned leak to CNN to be tainted by the "Clinton paid for this garbage" storyline. He wanted the leak out there standing on its own. So he deliberately withheld highly-relevant information from the president he was supposedly "briefing" so that he could have all important knowledge about a dossier he claimed was important.

Comey has previously shown a low animal cunning when it comes to planting stories in the press.

Was this entire "briefing" of Trump a fiction to conceal its real purpose, which was to "brief" CNN with a document that was otherwise untouchable?

All signs point to Yes.

Investigate. Appoint a special counsel.

Update: Earlier, Jake Tapper claimed another reporter was "correct" to say the "Russian dossier' started as Republican funded effort. Sean Davis quickly corrected him, saying, No, the Republican-funded file was about Trump's business interests, and that effort went nowhere (and I'm not sure that even was Republican funded-- no on-the-record source for that); the Russia part of the FusionCollusion only began when Hillary and the DNC started paying Fusion.

Jake Tapper then began a series of angry tweets telling Sean Davis why his apple was really a banana and even though he was wrong, in a Bigger Sense, he was right.

Anyway, Tapper then said something snarky like "I hope you'll apply the same standards at The Federalist."

Sean Davis replied:

Yes, about that.

Evan Perez has been on the byline of just about every story CNN has run about the "Russia Collusion." These stories feature "sources" with knowledge of the dossier.

Would it surprise you terribly to hear that Evan Perez, who reports on Fusion's files, and Glenn Simpson, who created Fusion's files, used to write a heck of a lot of stories together, sharing a byline at the Wall Street Journal a whole heck of alot?

Is Evan Perez a friend of Simpson's? Is he a close friend? If he is, why is he acting as a reporter on a story he's compromised on, rather than directing Glenn Simpson to talk to a non-compromised-by-friendship reporter at CNN?

Is that why CNN speaks no evil about FusionGPS and Glenn Simpson?

Is that ethical?

Is the rule that you shouldn't play "objective reporter" about a source you're close to now a Banana Rule and no longer an Apple Rule?

The reason Trump tweeted that was because he read the FISA warrant that authorized it. That has been my belief since the moment I read it. Trump saw the warrant or some other document that confirmed it and that's why he said it.

Now I am going to add a nice layer of tin foil that the FISA warrant that authorized the wire tapping at Trump Towers was granted based on the dossier.

I also recall that when Trump fired Comey he said he did so because Comey had told him on 3 occasions that Trump was *not* the target of the Russia hacking investigation. And now we know that Comey was actively involved in paying for a dossier designed to make Trump the target of this investigation months earlier.

You do not continue to employ people who lie to you like this, who have been actively undermining you, leaking to the press about it --- and then lying to you in private about how he's totes not investigating you.

He's FBI, so one would expect a proficiency on deceit. But really, f#@$ this Comey in particular.

42 >>Because all I've seen from Sessions is he couldn't wait to recuse himself and let this whole Russia mess unfold when all along it was Hillary and the Democrats that had the Russia problem.

I have no way of knowing if Sessions is this Machiavellian or not but the way it has played out has been just about perfect for Trump.

We can argue forever whether or not Sessions did the right thing by recusing himself but by doing so he let the left go stark raving mad with blood lust for Trump and got way over their skis because they were absolutely sure this was going to take Trump down.

Instead, it has boomeranged right back on them and they can't credibly claim this was some rightwing witch hunt. They've been polishing Mueller's knob for months as a paragon of virtue and impartiality and now he is coming after them.

Again, don't know if he did this on purpose or not but the end result is that all of this shady shit is coming out and it likely never would have or at least it wouldn't have had the impact this is going to have had he launched his own investigation.

Unless we f***ing fire most of the career people in the Criminal Division, and a few others, to save the $$$$, and thus need SOMEONE to do the work. Why do the taxpayers pay all these people (too much, BTW), if every important matter requires a "special counsel"?

It's an old refain here, for good reason, but will there *ever* come a point where Sessions, Trump, and his top advisers decide/recognize wereally are in a serious national crisis of corruption in the country's most important institutions, and map some dramatic action (and vigorous public communications) about it?

As always, the lack of a competent or serious Congressional GOP is a crippling disability in all this. But the 3-ton mahogany log just hit the camel's back.

The New York Times said that Trump was wiretapped. I am pretty sure that this was brought to Trump's attention.

But it doesn't even take that. There were transcripts of Mike Flynn talking. To get transcripts, you have to have a human being listening in on the conversation. And the conversation Flynn was having was while he was working in the Presidential Transition Office. In TRUMP TOWER.

You don't have to be a sooper genius to know that Trump Tower was wiretapped.

Flynn was recorded speaking to Russian (and ambassador?) after the election, one assumes this was captured as part of FISA surveillance. The transcript of this call was unmasked and leaked to the press, used to justify the Trump/Russia collusion narrative.

Flynn also had not disclosed this conversation to Trump. Trump didn't want Flynn on his team based on him withholding that info from him.

153 OT/ I know people rag on Sessions, but remember, he was the one person who stood solidly by Trump's side throughout the campaign. Put his reputation on the line. Never wavered. Maybe was the 1st endorsement.

Trump has how many people he can trust in the White House right now?

I'd maybe get more people to work with Sessions, that he can trust. But I also think he is getting crushed by the amount of crap going on. Seriously unprecedented time in our government...in our country's history.

Sessions knows how DC works though...where the bodies are buried. I tend to think he is doing a lot more behind the scenes than we know. He is just not a flashy guy who likes & needs constant attention. Which is good, IMO.

This is not me defending all the things he is doing, not by any stretch. But he's probably a lot more responsible for DJT in the White House than people realize. If you watched on the campaign trail, Trump always deferred to him; DJT is rarely as magnanimous with anyone the way he was with Sessions. And it's Session's memo that was the springboard for Trump.

So I cut the guy a lot of slack even if I don't agree with him. I'd rather someone I trust who moves slow, than another corrupt govt. official.

Posted by: Weasel at October 25, 2017 02:08 PM (Sfs6o)

Yes. The spy ring that had Anna Chapman in it also figures in this. The very spy ring (10 spies total) that the Obama Admin traded rapidly away to gain the release of a western spy that had been caught.

Thing was, Hillary was one of the targets of that spy ring. They got close to the Clinton Foundation, and one was actually a Friend of Bill via an investment banker who gave sums to CF.

This rabbit hole goes very deep.

JackStraw, comment section, so of course very telegraphic sorts of expression - agree, Congressional action has precipitated much of the specific unraveling we are watching.

I really meant that the integrity/corruption crisis in key institutions - FBI, DOJ, CIA - has reached the point where dramatic action is required. Think Watergate hearings + Church Commission + Pearl Harbor commissions, with actual legislative action to follow (not just firings or, in'shallah, prosecutions).

And per what others are saying here, I have, since the outset, also had the feeling that der Trumpenfuhrer, having seen the key info re surveillance, FISA warrants, etc., has played this pretty coolly, and is in fact as smart as he is looking about it.

However, if she goes down, others will be dragged down with her...so they may save her to save themselves.

If she does get caught, she'll throw people under the bus, like she did in the book. I think she pretty much hates everyone at this point.

Assange strongly hinted that Rich might have been a source for the Podesta and DNC email wikileaks, Rich was not robbed of any of his personal property like his wallet or watch and his case has never been solved, let's just say I'm not willing to say there is no connection any more.

He, like all the others, thought he would be safe because "Hillary was guaranteed to win". And they all believed it. After all, how could OrangaTrump win?

Applying it to various DEMOCRAT Senators (for the most part. Exceptions are Republican Senators who have earned Strange New Respect status for trashing some other Republican or stopping some Republican bill that the Democrats (and thus the Media) hated.)

Seems to me that phrase begs the question: Why does the Senate NEED a conscience?

I mean the Media is always yammering on and on about something to remind all and sundry about this or that outrage taking place or about to take place.

TOTALLY with you on this. Others were saying what Trump should tweet. It would be a huge mistake. HUGE. Stray voltage we don't need. He would mess up a good thing. Let them bury themselves. Don't help the press out by providing a tweet.

I thought it was quite clever. I could have been cruder.

No you don't deserve a sign from Engvall as I believe those signs were for inadvertent irony.

Yours was premeditated.

Besides people wear shirts like that all the time. It's meant to be self deprecatory.

You don't have a strong enough ego to wear one.

I find them amusing as a stab at all the other ones that point this or that direction with a descriptive label.

I want one that says - I'm with Him - Arrow pointing up.

our candidate is unacceptable and we shouldn't give him a seat at the

415 We have lived to see HRC start to be thrown into the volcano. Webb Hubbell can verify Hillary isn't traditional volcano bait.

Who is big enough to cause Her Majesty to be sacrificed?

Do the propaganda organs even understand how quickly they have been tossed under the bus?

Why now?

Those three answers could bring the federal government to its knees. Things are breaking so fast tanks won't be able to get into the streets soon enough.

America needed glasnost.

And we are getting glasnost.

416 I'm having a hard time getting excited about this. In fact I'll bet anyone here $50.00 that this goes down the memory hole by Christmas
I read an interesting book about the systematic anhilation of the Osage tribe with fbi assistance. All at the behest of some oligarchs so they could have Osage land rich with oil.
This crap has been going on for as long as this country has existed. It isn't going to change.

ace,

Allow me to add something crucial. (I have watched the summation of Tucker Carlson that you posted earlier a couple times now.)
I now strongly suspect that Mueller's primary purpose is to bullshit-"investigate" the situation and in the process help cover up the horrible crap that has been going on.
That is, there is likely a ton of evidence of wrongdoing in the Obama administration (which includes Hillary as Sec of State) which also extends into Hillary's campaign for POTUS. Wrongdoing of a nature that would utterly condemn the Obama admin.

Mueller's task is to be the first to oversee all the evidence and then claim: "Nothing to see here! Move along.". And in the process discredit and perhaps even erase the evidence that damns Obama's tenure.
At a minimum, Mueller can muddy the waters and make passe the case that Obama's people were rigging things.
- There is some serious danger here.

418 Actually I think Bush I was under the influence of his meds, or suffering the effects of age. Not that giving an old man in his reclining years some leeway will ever be a policy of Angry Womyn Against Rapey Men. All men are Harvey Weinstein. Except for the ones like me who are rich enough. We are the local panel van rapists, I guess.

420 I'm sticking with my earlier prediction ... nobody is going to jail over this. The fact that the FBI is balls deep ... yet again ... in another scandal makes me more confident.

Can't wait to start hearing the cries of "We must be careful here, lest we besmirch the ability of the FBI to do it's job".

Or did I miss that already ? Been pretty busy.

Shrillary lost to Trump despite everything the Democrats could do to lie, cheat, or steal her into office. Therefore it was proved she was not useful anymore. Heigh-ho, there she goes, on to the Obummer faction for 2020 2024.

The Lamestream Media is shocked, SHOCKED about this scandal, instead of burying it. So they are complicit in shifting gears as well.

422 From Mollie Hemmingway's article:
---
If the dossier was so shoddy that it was debunked in hours after BuzzFeed posted it in all its salacious glory, why brief the president and president-elect on it, much less leak it? What was the real purpose of that meeting, and that leak to CNN?
---
After reading excerpts it I had to wonder what was the sense of the word "intelligence" in the title of our "intelligence" agencies.

426 I was trying to sort out the recent news, and it can be sometimes difficult to discern between relevant and irrelevant facts. Here is an example. In 1977 I interviewed and was accepted by a major (at that time) U.S company for a contract to maintain navigation equipment on helicopters for Iran (under the Shah, pre-revolution). I ended up turning it down because someone I knew in intelligence recommended that it wasn't a good idea - the revolution was a little over a year later. Several years after that I talked to another guy who interviewed with me and took the job. He told me that, not only did he finish his initial two year contract, but the post-revolutionary Iran was still doing business with the helicopter company and that they renewed his contract. So, what is the point? This. I personally understand how a loyal American in the trenches can become seemingly involved with a foreign power ($120K/yr. in 1977). In the case of my friend, once the Iranian message became clear, he bailed out of a nice paying job, took a lot less money, and was proud to have done so. He was not the Clintons or the Podestas, nor their minions like Lynch, Holder, and Comey. Final question - will the investigation be by the rule of law and, if so and crimes were committed, will anyone go to jail. If I did those things, I know that I would. And that, folks, brings up the Second Amendment... (Did you see what I did there?)
