Uranium, Russia, Obama, Clinton, Money: A Match Made In Hell

A few days ago, JackStraw, long-time commenter, seafood aficionado, jibe-master, Mets fan and ocean racer sent me a seven-year-old article about enriched uranium transfers from Ukraine to Russia. U.S. Helps Ukraine Send Uranium to Russia. It was the catalyst for a short email exchange about exactly what the hell is going on.

Ignoring the tongue-bath that CBS gives Obama, it really is odd that we would facilitate these transfers, with the expectation that Russia is going to do what they say they will do.

This week's removal of more than 110 pounds of highly enriched uranium followed a pledge by Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych to get rid of all of his country's highly enriched uranium by April 2012. The material will be blended down in Russia, rendering it useless for bomb making.

Anyone care to bet on whether that "blending' actually occurred?

And as JackStraw pointed out:

Note the connection to Yanukovuch, the ex-Ukraine president who is in the middle of the Uranium One scandal and exiled to, yep, Russia.

Andrew McCarthey writes in his National Review article:The Obama Administration's Uranium One Scandal
Let's put the Uranium One scandal in perspective: The cool half-million bucks the Putin regime funneled to Bill Clinton was five times the amount it spent on those Facebook ads -- the ones the media-Democrat complex ludicrously suggests swung the 2016 presidential election to Donald Trump.

This is the real scandal, and one that should be aggressively investigated.

But it also brings up a larger point; should the world try to control nuclear proliferation? There are two issues that confound those attempts. The first is the obvious difficulty in controlling technology and knowledge. I am confident that there are enough people on this blog with enough skill and knowledge to build a nuclear weapon. Is it realistic to try to prevent sovereign nations from doing the same?

The second issue is: How reasonable is it to try to control the behavior of those sovereign nations? Americans bristle at the idea of the United Nations merely criticizing our internal policies. Imagine if they tried to embargo some critical material or technology!

I think a better strategy is to try to control the material and technology with the expectation that we will eventually fail, but at the same time make it abundantly clear what will happen if one of those sovereign countries goes nuclear.

Gee...I guess President Trump isn't so dumb after all!

29 "Rogue" nations either have powerful backers, or can be brought down with carefully built alliances. The threat of nuclear Japan- and Taiwan- probably focused China against North Korea.

In Iran's case, either you are a proxy or an enemy. With support from the GCC and the US their regime- and their satelittes- might collapse entirely. Which is why the Arabs felt confident enough to stop funding ISIS growth.

So it is possible to stop proliferation. Especially with an actual American in the White House.

50 This big uranium deal was all about money, little about nuclear weapons. Russia did not need Ukrainian nuclear material to make bombs - they have shit tons of the stuff already made up into bombs. And they can enrich material all they'd like as they are not covered by any restrictions on doing so.

What they did need was already enriched uranium at a hige discount to blend down and sell as fuel so they didn't have to use their own.

This is a much, much bigger deal than some fertilizer oligarchs plane was parked in Miami at the same time Trump was at Mar-a-lago.

As to the Non-proliferation Treaty, it is a world treaty, and you either buy into the mechanism or you don't. Leftists dig the whole "world opinion" thing until they don't. operational security experts
counterintelligence specialists

54 It is expensive to get the material to build U-235 nuclear weapons, it is not expensive to build them if the material is at hand.

It is inexpensive, in the national sense, to get the material to build a Pu-239 nuclear weapon. It is expensive and difficult to make one that works.

And with both of these it is expensive and difficult to make one that is reliable/small/light enough to use on a missile much less building an reliable ICBM itself.

However NK with the likely help of several other nations (Iran, China, Russia) is getting there.

--
Isn't this (at least partially) the rationale behind the Iran deal?

Iran will cheat. And the parties know it. But there is this kabuki show of "compliance" so that everyone saves face. One day, Iran will have a nuclear weapon, though. (And on that day, the USA will have to stand behind its deterrent).

The problem with this scheme is: (1) it is not known that Iran is a rational actor on the world stage; (2) Iran is a major state-sponsor of terrorism. What happens when terrorists execute a successful nuclear attack, and Iran says "Wasn't me!"?

That's a real threat. And the only way to control it is to make Iran either stop supporting terrorism, or deny them the ability to make nuclear weapons.

81 The Barney Miller episode referenced was based on a 1976 incident involving a Princeton University student who submitted a feasible A-Bomb design as part of his term paper - he had gleaned all of the info from publicly available information. It was distributed widely; I remember seeing a copy of it before the Feds took it seriously enough to clamp down on all the copies and scare everyone out of talking about it.

The "Big Secret" about A-bombs is that it isn't very difficult to design an A-bomb; you just need someone who knows enough advanced mathematics to design a spherical shockwave compressive core. Any good masters degree level math graduate should be able to do it.

The only hard part is getting enough fissile materiel to sustain a critical mass. And as soon as we let countries like North Korea and Pakistan build nuclear reactors, that toothpaste was out of the tube for good.

Nukes work best against big cities - how many people die if you hit NYC vs say Nebraska.

Cat would not go near it and I tried to give her some on a spoon and she went away. I took a good look at it and it honestly looks like vomit. I left it for 45 minutes and flushed it.
I had to look up word "tortie" it is in her three pages of Vet records. It's a dark cat with no white markings. The website there is very good and said most cats should eat twice a day and no dry food,.

So, Obama sows the divisions with his Resistance groups, and helps create the identity politics & racial wars, but all from behind the scenes. Then he uses that to blame the other side for divisive words for not wanting to play in the sandbox he created. For wanting to follow the rule of law & not have free speech censored, we are now divisive.

This big uranium deal was all about money, little about nuclear weapons.

Posted by: blaster at October 22, 2017 12:54 PM (jHrzU)

Another thing to consider is that if that Ukranian material is passed on by the Russians to one of the rogue states, it's nuclear signature is sufficiently muddled that they can plausibly deny responsibility once Iran/Norks/terrorists use the stuff on the West.

If you had a supply of enriched uranium or plutonium, building a "gun-type" bomb like Little Boy would be quite simple. They never tested a gun-type bomb, because they were certain that it would work. And it did.

Yes, torties is short for Tortoise shell, which is red (orange) black and white, all mottled together. Which is also like calicos.

247 I don't get the baby thing, but I do wonder how Gillespie removing his ticketmate, who was African American, from his campaign literature, will affect voter turnout. Maybe it'll make no difference. Or maybe it'll piss off some dems enough to stay home & say screw it...I don't like either candidate.

Northam is the Dem who had his black running mate not appear on some of his flyers.

Its actually regular old Dem constituencies at war. Rich people who have expensive second homes at the Wintergreen Resort don't want a pipeline, and Fairfax (the African American who is running for the Democrat Lt Gov seat) is against the pipeline. There is a union that wants the pipeline, so they said, look, we are paying for this set of flyers (about 1000 out of 1.5M), and we aren't putting Fairfax on there.

But, you know what - THEIR RULES. They are racists for taking the black man off. Northam allowed it, he's a racist. African Americans should be OUTRAGED at Northam.

280 The FBI is threatening their confidential informant if he talks to Congress. Stinking corrupt rats.

They are investigating Trump's non-existent Russian Collusion out of self-defense, trying cover-up their own actual Russian Collusion.

Much is made of Bill's half millon-dollar speech. But his personal best was the speech he gave to Ericsson, the Swedish Telecom giant. They wanted Iran Sanctions Relief from the State Dept. and suddenly developed an irresistible urge to pay Bill Clinton $750,000 for a speech. They got their relief--and the Mullahs got their cellphone tracking technology to spy on the Iranian people. Because #Resistance! #$till $he Per$i$ted!

Hillary has tried to hide behind the bureaucracy, claiming that the deal was approved by the Bureau of Weights and Measures, the Census Bureau and the night janitor at State. It's a farce, but it only proves Andy MacCarthy's point--the entire Obama Administration was neck-deep in the debacle.

But why?

The Clintons and Obama are both politically and financially corrupt. But the Clintons lean more towards the financial end, whereas Obama worships politics. And the final word was Obama's.

She wanted her precious money, but Obama needed Russia's help in building Iran's nuke plants, providing the uranium and the anti-aircraft defenses and most importantly, providing the political cover Obama needed to pass his Pre-Emptive Unconditional Surrender. She got what she wanted, he got what he wanted, as did Putin and the Ayatollah.

And Mueller, Rosenstein and Comey helped cover it up.

Well, I don't think they're trying to corner the market on Uranium, or they'd be buying up my in-laws village in Portugal, which sits on Uranium deposits. Which also had a facility to mine for it.
I wonder if it was a way to get some control over a national security resource, and a way to funnel restricted materials to unsavory actors. I think Putin would love to savor the irony of a NorK nuke flash burning LA made by American uranium.

What I have to come to grips with is that the congress...all of them...KNEW about this and they did nothing about it...unranium to Russia...kickbacks to Clinton and her husband...they knew and they did nothing. Why? The only answer is that they are complicit. They wanted Russia to get the uranium. They wanted the money to go to the Clintons. Why? They want Russia to send the uranium to Iran. Why? They want America to fail. What the heck else are we supposed to think?

Since shortly after the end of WWII the U.S. formalized in very clear terms that a nuclear attack on the United States by the U.S.S.R. would result in mutual assured destruction. When the Iron Curtain collapsed, there seemed to be a void as to what should follow especially for third world threats.

Post 9/11 seemed the appropriate time to establish a clear U.S. policy for the 21st century regarding rogue nations toying with WMDs and terrorists who were proxies for hostile nation states. A missed opportunity. One wonders how things would have evolved if Bush dropped a tactical nuclear weapon on either Kandahar or Tora Bora, and made it clear that any future proxy nation supporting terrorist would suffer the same fate.
