Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Saturday Overnight Open Thread (10/21/17) Short But Sweet EditionAn interesting look at The myth about dirty jobs, minimum wage and illegal immigrants. What’s really ironic is that the people who are trying to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour are the same people who say, “Mexicans will do jobs that Americans don’t want.” Get rid of the illegal Mexicans and see how fast that wage goes up to $15 on its own, no government intervention needed. But, of course, that would require caring about the single mom, the ex-con trying to straighten out his life, the lonely elderly guy who wants to go back to work, the diabetes patient who needs a wheelchair because of his swollen feet, and the guy who finally kicked drugs and needs to start over. That would require having a social conscience. IN BRIEF Stockton, California, is about to become the first city to test government-supported universal basic income in the U.S. The program is the idea of the city's 27-year-old mayor and will be primarily funded by the basic income advocacy group Economic Security Project.27 year old attempting to do what mankind hasn't figured out over how many centuries? Tinder brings out the basic mating instincts of men and women as they choose between beauty and brains, a study has found. Men using the smartphone dating app tend to select “hot” candidates, while women are more likely to prize intelligence and stability. The findings may come as little surprise but suggest that Tinder reinforces ancient mating behaviour that evolved to help us survive, say scientists. Hawaii is under siege by Spam bandits. Thousands of Australian women are rushing to go under the knife in ambitious quests to emulate the newly trending 'plump rumps' of their celebrity icons. Who do you think did it? DUH! The party included rubber penises, penis candles, penis hats and more. “There was a cake that had a lollipop shaped as a vagina,” said the mother. 1954, Born on this day, Eric Faulkner, singer, Bay City Rollers, (1975 UK No.1 single 'Bye Bye Baby', plus 11 other UK top 20 singles', 1976 US No.1 single 'Saturday Night'). "The program is the idea of the city's 27-year-old mayor and will be primarily funded by the basic income advocacy group Economic Security Project."
So the scam is to establish a basic income in a modest-sized city, funded by a nationwide group of rich idiots so that it has an income base much larger than the population can support. And then, when that Potemkin village doesn't immediately collapse because of all the outside buttressing, parade it around as a "success" and a "model" for a federal program that's "proven." Copied and pasted from the Pet Thread (about the doggeh vid):
When I first went to Africa, our group (it was a charity trip) visited a schoolhouse, where the students were probably about first graders. It was utterly bare bones: The teacher had a humble desk and chair, and the students sat on mats. We handed out snacks (wrapped cookies) to the students, and while each of them fiddled a bit with his treat, none of them at all tore into it. Africa is rife with contradictions: sometimes it's almost a Hobbesian state of nature, and I've also seen where in my experience there is a virtuous respect for moral authority: no doubt those students obeyed their teachers day in and day out. "Stockton, California, is about to become the first city to test government-supported universal basic income in the U.S."
Come on - we've already tested this - it's called Social Security Disability. Freed of the need to make a living, people on disability become enormously creative, productive, and generally make great use of all that free time. If that isn't enough, Saudi Arabia and the Gulf states did the same thing when oil prices were high - at most, you had to show up a couple of hours a day to a government make-work job, but in any case all citizens got a decent, guaranteed, income. Foreigners were imported to do all the actual work. As a result, of course, Saudi Arabia underwent a cultural renaissance, and became one of the world powers in art, science, and technology. Stockton will do every bit as well, methinks. Posted by: Packer Shareholder at October 21, 2017 10:48 PM (xnAyb) 115

Spam is an acquired taste.
Spend two or three weeks walking around in the middle of nowhere. When you get to the bottom of your pack and the only thing left is a couple of cans of spam you will devour it like a porterhouse with a side of creamed spinach and a double scotch. Interestingly, the acquired taste will stay with you. Does not mean you seek it out in the grocery store. Interestingly, the ratio of calories to dollars is pretty high for spam. Thousands of Australian women are rushing to go under the knife in ambitious quests to emulate the newly trending 'plump rumps' of their celebrity icons.

Then the Gods of the Market tumbled, and their smooth-tongued wizards withdrew And the hearts of the meanest were humbled and began to believe it was true That All is not Gold that Glitters, and Two and Two make Four And the Gods of the Copybook Headings limped up to explain it once more. Posted by: yankeefifth at October 21, 2017 11:04 PM (vuY5x) Vienna sausage cans fit in the bottom of a bag, and are a mix of heavily cooked down bits of otherwise unsalvageable chicken and corn syrup. The chicken is cooked down and the minerals and collagen and what-not are extracted along with "meat" It is pretty nasty, but when you are really empty and/or under a lot of stress, that is what your body craves. I try to keep a couple of cans with the bail-out kit. It's easier to eat on the run than a can of canned corned beef, it is not nearly as obnoxious when you dribble juice down the front of your coat as sardines, and you can fish the sausages out with the point of a knife, which is a trick you can't do with, say, deviled ham. Vienna sausage cans fit in the bottom of a bag, and are a mix of heavily cooked down bits of otherwise unsalvageable chicken and corn syrup. The chicken is cooked down and the minerals and collagen and what-not are extracted along with "meat"
It is pretty nasty, but when you are really empty and/or under a lot of stress, that is what your body craves. Posted by: Kindltot at October Well, I have to concede that the fact that you can dine upon them with the point of your knife makes them good for your bug out bag, but couldn't you just go with spam or Datrex biscuits? Guys that packed our stuff did a fantastic job. Same with the guys that delivered it. Thought we were done and all we had to do was get some stuff to storage. Then Mrs. YankeeFifth decided she wanted to look into one box really quick. Then another. Straight downhill after that. Now we have to go through all the boxes before they go to storage, pull about 10% out of each one, tape them back up, and find some place to put the stuff we pulled out. Sigh. Dogs waiting for permission to eat. Ha! Not at my house. I only have two dogs but breakfast and dinner are both madhouses. The youngest dog's dish is closer to the food storage unit ( an old time flour pull down drawer) than the older dog's, and the youngest dog's food is long gone before the older dog even gets hers. We've had several knock-down, drag 'em outs when one dog sticks her nose in the wrong bowl. What's funny, though, is that the youngest dog doesn't throw a fit when my tuxedo cat sticks his nose in her bowl. Then it's live and let live. Just to protect the youngest dog's breakfast, the same cat gets a few dog crunchies off to the side. (Yes, I know cats aren't supposed to eat dog food, but try and explain that to Tiger.)

And very, very good eats afterwards, in the early evening. A high point for me. 'Ette Steck brought her pre-WWII Garand, and I got to run two en-block clips of '06 downrange therefrom. That rifle is amazing. It is fully factory-new-mint condition, so tight, one is immune from "Garand Thumb", and is lazer accurate to boot. I have to find a way to be named in her will for that rifle. Y'all have no idea of what fun was had today in Central Texas, shooting guns of every description, eating the finest beef from a ranch-slaughtered steer, and enjoying the fine hospitality from Ben Had and the company of a few dozen of Teh Horde, withal. That the Astros win, is but icing on the cake. ALL THE FUN WAS AT TEH MO MEET. Every thing else, was lessened, accordingly. Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX p.s. Weasel is about a fine a shooting coach as I've ever worked a firing line with. If you want to learn how to be on target with a rifle. ANY rifle, you'd be well advised to seek his advice and capable coaching. Gospel, that. Posted by: Jim at October 22, 2017 12:15 AM (SHhXi) 443

The Wiki anisette article said it's usually mixed with water that makes it milky-white or something else and not drunk straight. I don't know as I've always taken it straight as ouzo or Sambucca.
And reading down into the arak article I see that the similarly-pronounced aragh is a vodka. I wonder if that's the British usage I've heard before as I recall the spelling as being somethign like arrach for it. Posted by: andycanuck at October 22, 2017 12:16 AM (mJ8mX) 447

The clouding up comes from something in the anise oils, I know that.
That's why paregoric becomes cloudy when mixed with water-- it contains anise oil as a flavoring. My dad used to keep a small bottle of paregoric in the medicine cabinet when I was a kid because the opium in it stops diarrhea. Posted by: Basement Cat at October 22, 2017 12:20 AM (3C9q2) 458

Methotrexate, as usual. The TNF inhibitors are just too damn expensive (insurance won't cover but some fraction), plus the strong immunosupression is something I just don't won't to do.
Posted by: publius, the Persistent Poperin Pear at October 22, 2017 12:05 AM (8O3HH) Gotcha. I have PsA, and the usual oral meds are contraindicated for me, so I have to go the TNF inhibitor route. They are expensive as hell. Some of the manufacturers have assistance programs, which you might look into if you decide to go that route (in consultation with your rheumatologist, of course).

I had both experiences. My grandfather on my Dad's side always had stories of the war. He volunteered for the duration in '41. Drove a tank in Patton's 3rd Army. 735th (738th?) Armored Battalion.
The grandfather on my mother's side joined in '37. He joined the cavalry. And when he died we found his cavalry boots in his chest. He was in the Pacific in WWII and Korea. He NEVER talked about the war(s) in my memory. He would talk about people he knew, but never about his service. Retired a Major. Then did 15 years in civil service. Why put up with some guy and his smelly socks and bad breath if you can sue for divorce and get the house, the car and half his stuff. Plus if there's kids, you can torture him till they're 18 (and sometimes beyond) over paying for every little thing that the child support is supposed to go for and, and visitation. Changing meetings, taking the kid somewhere when they're supposed to see dad, or if you're clever you can completely turn the kid against him so they hate him and not YOU who filed in the first place. What a system. What a country. Not for long at this rate. Posted by: Bitter Clinger and All That (Back from the Dead) at October 22, 2017 12:51 AM (LS3oW) 520

This sperm theft crap thing has done got me to ponderin'. Now, if the dude was banging her with a condom and it broke, or using other birth control and it failed, I'd say them's the risks and he should be on the hook. However, if some dude whacked off into the sock, or potted plant, and some woman came and grabbed it somehow and impregnated herself with it, then I'd say no way. There's a failure rate for every form of birth control, of course, even the pill. For example, the failure rate of condoms is 14%. The pill is about 5%. The ol' coitus interruptus (20%) is better than spermicide (26%). Even vasectomies and tube-tying as a non-zero failure rate. Very small, but non-zero. Nope. Still about 8-10 years. Women are dying of male diseases now though. Heart attacks, strokes, and stomach problems from stress of jobs. So they've gotten equal there. The female constitution is better equipped and the survival of the fittest has made women longer living as they can continue to care for the offspring and the offspring of their offspring. Once a man's deposited his sperm, Mother Nature don't need him around anyhow. So unless he's making babies at 65 his longevity genes don't get passed on. Posted by: Bitter Clinger and All That (Back from the Dead) at October 22, 2017 01:27 AM (LS3oW) 573
>> Once a man's deposited his sperm, Mother Nature
>> don't need him around anyhow. That's true for lower animals like cats and dogs, mostly. But human offspring take a hell of a lot to raise, and that's there's an evolutionary basis for the woman getting the father to stick around and take care of them. There are some quirks with that, though..... Posted by: publius, the Persistent Poperin Pear at October 22, 2017 01:30 AM (8O3HH) 574

I hear you but we've always been a troop or tribal species so any particular male won't be missed. His duties of protection and hunting can be done by another. The female however is irreplaceable up to a certain age and the youngsters get imprinted so they tend to stay close which also can be protective of the female. Long as there's enough young males to throw at the lions, tigers and bears, Oh my, then the species goes on. A particular males genes may not make it. The longevity genes that get passed on are the alpha males. (and sometimes one of the lower ranks sneaks in a squirt or two). And the alpha can get worn out pretty quickly. Can't use mountain gorillas or chimps or Baboons as examples of what our forerunner species had to contend with as they're current environment is totally different than ours was. And of course after a while we started to change that environment. And other factors come into play. The purpose of the human male is to fight, fuck and die, in that order. Fight and survive thus proving worth to fuck and pass on genes. Fuck to pass on genes and stay with woman/kids until later are big enough to feed themselves/run away. Die to get out of the way and stop consuming resources allowing woman to fuck some other fucker, diversifying the gene pool. 50% of current society feels we can skip the first two steps and go straight to a male die-off 'for the children and the plant.' If you don't mind: how long ago and what site did you use? Posted by: Bitter Clinger and All That (Back from the Dead) at October 21, 2017 12:41 AM (5sfJ+) We met on Udate in 2000. We still chuckle and make references to profile items we had in common. "Trendy glasses". Heh. Her son was 10 when we met. When I got introduced to Miss Debbie, his karate instructor, he informed her the Mrs IMG and I met on the internet. "The internet is GOOD!" Double heh. We were direct messaging on the site. Her employer had AIM and ICQ and other messaging platforms blocked as well as hotmail and yahoo mail. The also blocked the dating site about a week after we met online (we had not met face to face at that point). Email was out, since she would have to use work email. I told her "Gimme ten minutes. I'll build a chat website." She was all "Whaaaat?" and I was like, "Waaaait". Ten minutes (or so) later, I emailed her the IP address and we chatted merrily along. Chicks dig guys with skills. Conception made me remember something. There is an actual tiny flash of light, visible light, when an egg is fertilized. It had do with zinc ions or something. After hysterectomy, I think, if ovaries are still functional, an ectopic or something close to it pregnancy can still occur. Low chance. If it does, it's an emergency. Needs to be gotten out of there quickly. Posted by: publius, the Persistent Poperin Pear at October 22, 2017 01:56 AM (8O3HH) 606

An interesting look at The myth about dirty jobs, minimum wage and illegal immigrants.
I got put off Limbaugh in the '90's when he spouted the liberal line about "Immigrants are only doing the jobs Americans won't do." I've worked in some industries that make a point of hiring only Immigrants(i.e. Illegals) and one thing I noted, the Illegals, if they were in charge, would hire only other illegals. I found it hard sometimes to get hired if the super was an immigrant. They are just as bigoted if more so than everyone else. They also would isolate and cause trouble for any American they had to hire. They were interested in getting their friends and family on the payroll and could care less about legalities or fairness. They laugh at our open borders. They don't take this country seriously because of it. It's why they believe in a few years the SW will be Mexican again. They believe it's always been their's. (they forget they stole it from the Apaches and the other tribes in the area back in the early 1500's. But now to them it's theirs and been theirs forever. If we can't secure our borders, we have NO country. Posted by: Bitter Clinger and All That (Back from the Dead) at October 22, 2017 03:02 AM (LS3oW) 645

I've been getting hundreds of replies to my tweet stating that that "trans-woman" in Playboy is a man.
It's been very illuminating on just how much the entire "trans" things has percolated through society. Even amongst actual sciences, the idea that "gender" is separate and distinct from "biological sex" has taken hold. It is repeated as fact in media, news, and kids are being taught that it is fact. They have co-opted "man", "woman", "he", and "she" and applied it to "gender" and deny that it has to do with "biological sex" and refer to the new "academic" consensus. By co-opting the words, they can make it seem that "gender" was what people always thought and that the very concept of "biological sex" is a recent thing invented by oppressors in order to oppress. Further, they say that having multiple genders is normal amongst societies around the world, against citing "academic" sources. That such sources have for decades now only furthered that narrative, we are left with no "proof" to the contrary. Heck, they even say that there are not just two sexes and that biological sex is a spectrum with dozens and dozens of sexes... and can cite "academic papers" from actual scientific fields to this end. Simply pointing out reason and rationality will no longer work. This will be a long slog back to rationality. It'll probably take longer than most of our lifetimes.
