I think this illustrates one of the basic divides between progressives and conservatives, and actually serves as a good litmus test, to wit: if you believe safety ought to be valued more than freedom, you're either a progressive or you will, over time, slowly gravitate toward the progressive end of the political spectrum. If you favor freedom over safety, you're a conservative, or you will trend in that direction. And oh, by the way, you can't have both, not at the same time. I have to say this because I know there are difference-splitters who think they can dodge the dilemma by claiming to value both. But both can't be equally important. Ultimately, the more you have of the one, the less you must necessarily have of the other.


Let's check in with Matthew Dowd (Finalist: Dumbest Man on the Internet, 2015, 2016, 2017) and see if he's taken any basic history lessons:

More importantly, our courts have found gov't is not accountable for providing safety. So any argument based on gov't making things safe is based on some combination of stupidity, lies, and ignorance.

So, the courts have said you can't trade freedom for safety, since the gov't is not required to provide safety. All you can do is surrender freedom.

Leonard Wood, May-July, 1989), when we started marksmanship, our company started with learning to zero our weapons.

For those of you who don't know, that means setting the front and rear sights to zero (neutral), and then adjusting them gradually (by firing at a target) to account for your and the gun's eccentricities. Our battalion sergeant major was on hand to observe. We began with just getting used to the idea of shooting bullets into a target (paper, with circles of various sizes), from 40 yards. I think it was 40 yards. Anyway, we fire 3-3 rounds groups to see how we're doing from scratch. SGM walks the line (guns are emptied and secured - they take this sh*t seriously) and I'm about 2/3s down the line. He looks at everyone's groupings. Gets to mine. Pauses, double-takes, looks at me, gives me the thumbs-up and yells, "Now that's how we do it." Keep in mind, I had not adjusted my sights yet. I had gotten groupings that looked like I had adjusted my sights and knew what I was doing. I hadn't adjusted, but I knew what I was doing. It was a great feeling to be praised like that. Thanks, Counselor Anderson!

I eventually usually qualified expert, although occasionally throughout my 12 years I only hit sharpshooter. Also, when I became an officer, I wore my marksmanship badge on my dress uniform. Every once in awhile I'd catch flack for doing so -- officers are not supposed to wear marksmanship badges on their dress uniforms. However, I had thoroughly read AR 670-1 and there was NO prohibition of officers wearing them and everything indicated officers were supposed to. I chalked it up to officers protecting those who were not good shooters. The enlisted soldiers I led always liked my no BS/not a kowtow officer attitude. :->

237 Been pondering after looking at photos of the hotel room and considering casualty count.

I think the minimum amount of ammunition required to get that result is on the order of 200 rds. I could see each round fired causing a max of three casualties (if fired into an are where folks are standing close to one another).

Looking at a photo of what seems to be the firing position, I see on the order of 100 pieces of brass.

I have not seen photos where the other busted out window is. That one is not a good firing position, though. I expect he didn't use that one. However, a smart cookie would bust out another window to make it harder to ID the firing position. Extra credit for making it in a separate bookable room (which he did).

Nothing above is dispositive. But, it certainly leads to more questions.

Other than the freedom aspect of a opt-out system, I think this is bad policy in general. If one volunteers as an organ donor they're signalling they have organs worth donating; meaning they take care of themselves.

So now you will have doctors having to open people up and discover they were hard drinkers or had chemotherapy or some other such preclusive donation scenario.

Three years ago someone broke into my home. When the break-in was discovered by my daughter, they were long gone (but didn't know that at the time).

Took the police over 20 minutes to have one officer show up. 30 minutes later I had half the police force in my yard.

I shudder to think of what could have happened in those 20 minutes.

549 This may have already been posted but for those that missed it, like I did....here's the exact timeline of events.

10:05pm: First shots fired by the suspect. This was seen on closed-circuit television from the concert venue.

10:12pm: First two officers arrive on the 31st floor and announce the gunfire is coming from directly above them.

10:15pm: The last shots are fired from the suspect per body worn camera.

10:17pm: The first two officers arrive on the 32nd floor.

10:18pm: Security officer tells the LVMPD officers he was shot and gives them the exact location of the suspect's room.

10:26-10:30pm: Eight additional officers arrived on the 32nd floor and began to move systematically down the hallway, clearing every room and looking for any injured people. They move this way because they no longer hear the gunfire of an active shooter situation.

10:55pm: Eight officers arrive in the stairwell at the opposite end of the hallway nearest to the suspect's room.

11:20pm: The first breach was set off and officers entered the room. They observed the suspect down on the ground and also saw a second door that could not be accessed from their position.

11:27pm: The second breach was set off allowing officers to access the second room. Officers quickly realized there was no one else in the rooms and announced over the radio that the suspect was down.

550 What I can't figure out is- if it was his intent to die, why didn't he keep raining bullets down until the police broke the door down and killed him? Unless he ran out of ammo. Didn't hear anything about full mags laying around.

551 I shudder to think of what could have happened in those 20 minutes.

Police response time to any given location is public record. I've showed more than one hard lefty "the police will protect me" person official numbers that say even on a Priority One call, they're gonna wait 12 minutes for the cavalry to arrive.

I then invite them to sit quietly for 12 minutes to feel how long that is even under perfectly normal and safe conditions.

556 Primordial, the government doesn't keep you safe. Look at the discussion of the Warren v. DC case. I mean, isn't this a conservative thing?

Why do people put signs next to their doors saying, "We don't dial 911". They protect themselves.

If we descend into anarchy as a society, I will still have freedom and safety, because I will provide it to my family through the barrel of a gun.

I'm being drastic here, but as conservatives, we protect ourselves and don't rely on someone else to do it for else.

The WH, and the NRA, and others, when incidents of this sort occur, should not just issue tactical-babble - vague reasonable sounding murmurs that are designed, and always do, lead to "nothing being done". Even though nothing being done is the correct objective.

As with every other high-profile statement and moment, it's an opportunity.

Push back with facts and argument. Educate. Inertia and the bulk of the electorate is with you already, but no reason to bypass opportunities to move the ball the *other* direction.
