Good News: A Steeler Issues an Apology for the Anthem Protest
Bad News: It Was the Lone Player Who Stood for the Anthem, Apologizing for "Throwing [His] Teammates Under the Bus"

They're fighting for free speech -- but they're going to haze, shame, and ostracize any among them who don't join them in the Coerced Speech.

Here is Alejandro Villaneuva, Afghan vet (two tours), now being made to apologize for not joining in the Pittsburgh Social Justice Warriors' anthem protest.

He's now telling a story -- probably a story pressured into him -- about how he "unintentionally" exited the tunnel to the field during the anthem and could not turn back and re-join his protesting Social Justice Warrior teammates.

Pittsburgh [SWJs] lineman Alejandro Villanueva says the national anthem ordeal got out of control and he is taking the blame.

"Unfortunately I threw my teammates under the bus, unintentionally," Villanueva said. "Every single time I see that picture of me standing by myself I feel embarrassed," Villanueva said in a press conference Monday.

Villanueva was the only [SJW] player standing outside the tunnel for the national anthem before their game Sunday against the Chicago Bears.

Villanueva says he asked quarterback Ben Roethlisberger if he could be out in front with the captains during the national anthem and they agreed to it, but when he went to the front of the tunnel to see the flag, he went too far unintentionally.

"When we came out of the locker room into that tunnel, it was a very small area. There was a flag or something coming off the field so there were a bunch of Bears fans, coming off the field holding that going in front of us, so it kind of held us up," Villanueva said.

The rest of the team remained in the tunnel.

"I made my teammates look bad, and that is my fault, and my fault only," Villanueva said. "We as a team tried to figure it out, but obviously butchered it."

This seems to be a reversal of his previous story:

So if you're following this -- failed washout quarterback Colin Kaepernik has been grandstanding his lone protests for some time. No teams have demanded he apologize.

But the minute someone stands alone against the Social Justice Warriors, he is forced to apologize and claim -- probably dishonestly, pressured into lying -- that his gesture of honoring the flag was an "unintentional" "accident."

Question: I've talked about killing this league to send a powerful shudder through the Democrat-Entertainment Complex.

For those who disagreed -- any change of mind? Is the obnoxious escalation starting to make you question you devotion to the SJW NFL?

Clarification: I didn't mean to suggest that Villaneuva was dishonorable for this. I meant to suggest the Pittsburgh SJWs were dishonorable for pressuring him to say these things.

I was trying to say an honorable man has been pressured by an organization which pays him -- and could cut him -- into apologizing for having honor.

They can do this. Not all Soviets believed in communism. But they were made to publicly proclaim that they did.

As a soldier, he's probably well aware of the dangers of a soldier who is despised by his teammates. Fraggings happen.

Their free speech is sacrosanct; yours will be punished. Clear enough for everyone?

...

BTW, the San Antonio Spurs of Social Justice coach has now weighed in -- and he says you need to #CheckYourWhitePrivilege.

17 I feel bad for him. Army training makes you part of a team- he believes he inadvertently let his team down by making it look like he was taking a stand that he wasn't taking. I'm sure there were LOTS of guys on his team who wanted to be on the field standing for the anthem, but as a team they decided to do something else to respect the wishes of the teammates who wanted to take a knee.

Anyway, I disagree with the weird0 knee-takers, but I'll stand with the veteran and obviously have no reason to doubt his patriotism.

28 Ben Roethlisberger Regrets Steelers Boycotting Anthem

I was unable to sleep last night and want to share my thoughts and feelings on our team's decision to remain in the tunnel for the National Anthem yesterday.

The idea was to be unified as a team when so much attention is paid to things dividing our country, but I wish we approached it differently. We did not want to appear divided on the sideline with some standing and some kneeling or sitting.

As a team, it was not a protest of the flag or the Anthem. I personally don't believe the Anthem is ever the time to make any type of protest. For me, and many others on my team and around the league, it is a tribute to those who commit to serve and protect our country, current and past, especially the ones that made the ultimate sacrifice.

Posted by: Tami at September 25, 2017 06:49 PM (Enq6K)

29 Actually Ace, I think what Alejandro is saying is that he and the other team captains were going to stand in the tunnel together with their hands on their hearts during the Anthem and that he somehow walked 20 feet forward without the others, separating him from the team. The QB Ben R. said the same thing last night. So Alejandro is not apologizing for showing reverence for the flag, he's apologizing for not standing next to the other team captains in the tunnel when he did it.

103 When it comes to morality, it can be really hard to do the right thing. I've seen guys with absolutely no fear of risking their life in combat suddenly wilt when it comes to making an unpopular decision or having to hand out disciplinary action in a peace-time situation.

With Villanueva, he has a hard choice to make. Does he do the right thing or the easy thing? Does he tell his teammates that, as a former officer and Army Ranger, that there is no way in Hell he is going to stop respecting the Anthem and the Flag? Or does he stay in the good graces of his whiny-ass teammates and bow to the immense amount of social pressure being currently piled on?

We know the answer to that question: He is taking the easy road, the path of least resistance. He will probably regret it for the rest of his life, but that's his burden now, and maybe some young officers out there will take note.....

O Say Can You See, By the Dawn's Early Light! Being a Vietnam Vet, with
all the freedom of speech that we have today, to you people that kneel
for our national anthem or hide in the locker room and won't come out,
what do you see in your mind when they play or sing our national anthem?
Let me tell you what I see...I see body bags, I see wounded men on
helicopters, I see HELL! The national anthem is not about Trump,
Obama, Goodell, Clinton, or any of these people. It's not about race, I
fought beside MEN not Blacks or Mexicans or Indians. I fought beside
Americans! They ALL BLED RED! Freedom has a taste the protected will
never know. So when you hide in the locker room or don't stand consider
yourself kicking all the Veterans right in the nuts. Standing for our
anthem isn't supporting any kind of racism, or brutalities, it's
honoring the sons, brothers, uncles, and fathers that died so you could
play your dumbass game on Sunday a FREE MAN!"

The grandkids of the losers of those wars are free today because white people went to war on principle (even though the civil war should have been resolved peacefully), and killed a lot of white people ... which resulted in slaves (that were slaves because their black "family" captured them) being freed.

Vincent asks Marvin his opinion about something to which Marvin responds "Man, I don't even have an opinion." and Vincent replies "You have to have an opinion!" before blowing Marvins head off. Corporations are asked to have an opinion about some SJW topic of importance. If they try to say "I don't have an opinion." they get their heads blown off by boycotts and protests.

316 it is true the commie left would like to hurt the GDP by tearing up the NFL ... but I say that money was not productive. It is basically the broken window theory ... we are funding them to break up America.

put those funds into your local economy, support your local teams, go to the games, double down on buying beer when the Quincy Gems play (they used to be a Cub farm team, now have a small league).

After I quit running fellowships, I did my "gig for society" by running a small sports league at a bar for ten years ... brought people together, a nice social network ... sheriff's team, Times Picayune team, fishers, cops, all sorts ... all drank together ... go local.

Same goes for the Wall Street mut fund ... find a way to put that money to work locally, instead of in China funding the Nork nukes. At least divert part to your smaller town, not the leftist megalopolis.

But that's not going to sell to the grifters of the Left or to the masses who don't want to engage in self-criticism. It's much easier to remain a victim, blame someone else, and feel sanctified as totally innocent.

2. Why is the Right making everything political? This is an even bigger lie. For 50 years, since the New Left rose, they have been pushing the line that everything IS political. (Read Scruton's book, if you doubt me - not that anyone here does doubt that.) I was arguing this shit with them in the effing 60s. Your choice of music was political. Your choice of movies, that too. I liked the Yankees? That was fascist. It went on and on.

(Oh, yes, another line they like is "it's just a piece of cloth. This from the people who've been shrieking for months over a few pieces of metal. F THEM ALL.)

Major League Baseball is winding up its regular season, with hot series deciding post season slots. Exciting games, records being broken, great play by young, happy men. What's not to like, especially for the 'ettes?

Its always infuriated me that the NFL takes over all coverage and discussion just as Baseball is really heating up. All the sports news magazines, all the talk shows, all the tv shows, they all turn into football once their pre-season starts up and F the American passtime. Yet another win for the left.

Baseball is cheaper to see a game at than football, plays more often, and you can play catch in the park and talk about the game with your kid any day of the week. Baseball is at the very core of America.

This is the weird thing I keep coming back to. We do not really live in something equivalent to the USSR yet. But the NFL/entertainment/news complex keeps acting as if we do. But these tactics cannot work positively for them, in the current context, as opposed to the Stalinist one.

An apology from someone famous in the USSR would cause the proles to react in fear "Oh my goodness! If they can make this person recant, I'd better watch my step!"

But at this point in America, this kind of apology just produces disgust, not fear. This was exactly the wrong move to make. They should have just ignored it. It will just alienate more fans.

Jesus was offered power by the devil, to betray God. Temptation is real, and Villanueva is in a very high stress position ... all the powers of evil were laid on him by the leftist mafia, all his friends, his new career ... maybe he has some degree of PTSD, whatever ... things get jumbled.

I bring the JC versus the devil thing because it is not so simple as "I believe in America", even for the rangers. It is easy if one is aloof and unattached, but in the middle of the grand deception that has been built against America for decades ... not so easy.

Still ... Villanueva did apparently crater to the pressure. But he also did walk out of that tunnel and stand ... they collectively took him down after that. For that we should hate "them" all the more. They are doing it to Trump .. they are doing it everywhere ... keep your guns.

The Ranger gets a pass. He didn't betray his team in battle, where it mattered. I'll assume he's just trying to get a team back together to play football.

Which leads to the thing I haven't heard anyone talk about. I have the sense all the teams are in disarray emotionally. There's no team morale or spirit. Any attempted is contrived. How do you think the white players are feeling, whether they support the actions or not?

544 An honest observation: taking a knee is about black equality, and blacks being treated differently than the police, correct?

If yes, how is protesting the flag related to any of that?

We are not in a totalitarian state. We have freedom of speech, and the government does not control the words and actions of each and every white person in America.

All of the police officers in America are not employed by the U.S. Government. They are paid by their municipalities. They are not controlled by the government either.

So how does protesting "America" at a football game relate at all to "injustices" committed by individualized in localized areas?

Do the black players wish for a totalitarian state where they are rulers and whites are slaves? Is that what they really want? White slaves? Because that is sure what it seems like.

560 Villanueva's first instincts are still a positive development. No one will believe he voluntarily backtracked (even if he did) so it looks even worse for Pittsburgh and NFL.

Once again the left is going out of their way to attack the military, and that is always a good development. Even if this country is going down the road to civil war the majority of the military will never side with the left.

You cannot have your vision of a 1984 tyranny without the military firmly on your side.

So hell let's get on with the show
(Chorus)
Fuck 'em all,
Fuck 'em all
The long and the short and the tall
Fuck all the fullbacks and fuck all the ends
Fuck all the coaches and ESPN
'Cause we're saying goodbye to them all

There'll be no endorsements
They need reinforcements
So cheer up my lads

Its more popular now than it was in the 90s, so its not fading away. Its just not covered as much as football. Maybe with the NFL being downplayed it may gain more attention again.

I agree that baseball is more rural and pastoral, its played at a more gentle, thoughtful rate than sudden explosions of violent action. Its more thoughtful than frenetic running and crashing into each other. That doesn't play as well to a lot of people as other games. But its still very American.

Baseball was America's sport when America was at its zenith.

Football took over in the late 60s, about the same time the counterculture came along.

I'm not equating football with the 60s counterculture, but it's kind of interesting that they ascended to prominence at the same time.

I don't think it's all that complicated. He made a statement by coming out and standing and saluting the flag. He has not apologized for that.

What he apologized for was that he made his teammates look bad in contrast even if by accident. I don't think that is dishonorable feeling, quite the contrary, I think that is honorable. That is kind of the entire point of being a teammate.

He got tossed into a bad spot, no matter what he did he was going to get criticized. I can respect his decision to salute the flag and give him a pass for feeling bad that he made his teammates look small.

Human beings are social animals. We need to be accepted by and protected by a family, peer group etc. Ostracism is a powerful weapon, especially with someone like Villanueva where it was particularly crucial as part of a military unit. Exactly, this is the main point of all the events. This is at the core of it. They CAN stop this, but choose not to. They choose instead to punish the very ones opposed to it. The NFL even leaned on the Seahawks for not taking the field last night.

I think you're right. If you look at game times, they were about 1.5-2 hours in the early 20th century, and have steadily increased since then, mostly after television came along. Today it's not unusual for a 9-inning postseason game to go 4 hours. No wonder people think it's boring. And of course children can't stay up to watch them on school nights.

Posted by: rickl at September 25, 2017 08:14 PM (sdi6R)

667 NFL/Tomlin couldn't possibly believe anyone would take this recantation as being action freely performed by Villanueva.

So they must have intended the statement as a message to fans, humiliating Villanueva by using him as a mouthpiece. "This is our official team policy. We will be forcing all team members to conform and not allow them to stand for the anthem as we used to".

So they are sticking to their guns, and informing fans of this by breaking the one guy who believed as they do, and forced a public recantation. It's just more contempt directed towards Steelers fans, and will just alienate more.

Football fans would get together and kick your ass for playing rock and roll on your car radio.
Coach would send his private gang after the kid who wasn't getting haircuts.

Oh, it was glorious.

It's how I read it. And of course it matters, this didn't end today.

We'll see how this plays out but I don't see a kid who grew up on military bases, who went to West Point and as we all know served heroically in Afghanistan as I guy without honor. Honor is more than just saluting the flag, it's about respecting your teammates and earning their respect. That seems to be in his DNA.

I disagree that he is now a target and I don't think his job is in any danger. He's a left tackle, one of the highest paid and hardest to find positions in pro football. I bet his teammates and others treat him with respect and so does the rest of the league.

Colin Kaepernick he ain't. He can play and he is definitely a guy with honor.

As I understand it, in the old days before TV, when the teams switched sides between innings, there wasn't much of a delay. The defensive team ran back to the dugout, the other team ran out to take their positions, and the batter stepped in.

There was a natural break between innings, but it didn't take any longer than physically necessary.

If we don't split amicably, one or the other factions will have to dominate, and the result will be either war or tyranny.

709 remember, to the mike florio's of the world, trump really stepped in it with his "obscene" tweets about hte NFL and they're all rallying around to show that they're not SOB's and that anti-football player statements like his, completely without reason, is not who we are.

The NFL thinks the players and owners are sympathetic creatures. and besides, the pink nfl shit next month is going to bring in new, better fans who GET the nfl, who really feel that repeating BLM lies about how peaceful minorities in America...NO THE WORLD... are being hunted down and murdered for sport. Especially, the ones who were born out of wedlock and adopted by nice white christian couples.

So, Villaneuseasvea, had to apologize, see? Otherwise, the mean anti-NFL and and anti-player person wins.

722 So, stepping back...what if yesterday didn't go down the way it did? What if AV hadn't come out & stood alone?

Would we be better off?

Or what if he had stuck by his guns today? Would we better off?

In the larger picture, I'm gonna go with No.

1) there would not have been an uproar at all w/o AV; just business as usual.

2) by a soldier with his creds stepping back today, he unmasked the duplicity, hypocrisy & craven nature of the NFL. And for me amplified how much free speech is under attack in this country. That scares me. It should galvanize all of us.

AV served as a wake-up call for those not paying attention. Both his act yesterday & today. I do not believe one or two people will get us out of this morass. This is a cultural dividing point. It is all hands on deck. It's a tipping point.

People finally woke up...I hope. AV was the sacrificial lamb.

No, it was at its zenith in the 1950's.

And actually, (this surprised me) it's not really a pastoral game either. Sure, kids played it in the country, but it really took off in the big cities, especially NYC, which in the 50's was the capital of baseball, with 4 mlb teams. When you look at a map of expansion teams, it's striking how mlb was mainly an East Coast thing for a long time, because until air travel, it was too difficult to travel out west for games. The Cards developed a huge fan base because they were the team farthest south and furthest west until the Giants and Dodgers moved.

746 White privilege? Some of the most privileged individuals on the planet are professional athletes. They get perks and opportunities that the common man could never dream of. 750 17 I feel bad for him.

Posted by: LASue at September 25, 2017 06:47 PM (Mjus2)

As a 'team', those who wanted to be on the sidelines didn't have a say in the matter. They were simply outvoted and complied...or else.

There is no 'team' when it comes to showing disrespect.

752 This has been a very sad week for true patriots and sports fans across the country. I very much disappointed in the NFL's show of unity this weekend. I believe it was the ultimate sign of disrespect to many hard working Americans. These are the Americans who have supported the NFL from the beginning. I have been a Bears fan for 47 years añd have watched thousands of NFL games showing my support. I have watched my last NFL game. Don't get me wrong. Players must support "their organization". But not by insulting our country. In my opinion the NFL just drove a dagger into the soul of the USA. I believe the prosperity of our country is more important than the prosperity of a bunch of over-paid men playing a game. Each and every NFL organization can go belly-up from here on out. You see, the NFL had a great thing going until the NFL began to disrespect me, my flag, my president, and my fellow patriots who love our country. If the NFL does not love the USA, which has provided Billions of dollars to the NFL, pack up all your shit and start the NFL in another country. I loved th Bears as much as anyone, but now my heart is broken. Good-bye NFL. I do not wish you luck!, Please feel free to publish, share and spread my words.
