The disgraced ex-congressman broke down crying as he was sentenced to 21 months in prison Monday for convincing a high school student to undress and touch herself via Skype in 2016. "This was a serious crime. It’s a serious crime that deserves serious punishment," Manhattan federal Judge Denise Cote said as the convicted sext fiend dropped his head into his hand and wept.

He can get a maximum 15% reduction for good behavior ("good time"). He is eligible to spend the last 6 months of his sentence in a halfway house.
Bottomline, best case scenario for him? He goes to the halfway house after he serves 12 months. At the halfway house, he'll have to return there at night-- but he can go to work, or look for work, during the day. Also go to counseling, etc.

I think the rules in prison are different for this sort of crime as regards the internet. And even when he gets out there can be restrictions on his internet...I think. Law experts may know. But I don't think any prisoners are allowed to tweet & facebook, et.al. Even their snail mail is monitored, I thought.

Federal probation still exists, and like pretty much all other U.Ss
probation functions is part of the a system. It is common for a federal
prisoner to be sentenced to x number of months in custody and y number
of months on supervised probation as part of their basic sentence. It
is no longer possible to shorten that basic sentence via parole except
for those exceptions noted above.
The "noted above" was those sentences handed down before 1987.

This is the biggest problem for the NFL. Every week that goes by with people skipping football is more people likely to never come back because they figured out those 3 hours can be better spent on things people like more.

Bang the spouse
go fishing
go on a drive
garden
play a game
watch a movie
go to the park with the kids
there's so much other stuff to do, and the NFL is just reminding people of that. Imagine those wives who've been trying to get the hubby to do chores around the house on Sunday now getting 3 more hours of it out of them. How easily are they gonna give that up?
The NFL is hurting its self a lot more than they think with this. But I fear not as much as they should, because fans will run back as soon as they can.
I mean, ace led the charge against the NFL even before this whole knee stuff started. And even he made sure to watch the Superbowl this year...

That was the main thrust of my comment. If they wanna virtue signal, fine. Do it in the locker room. I like the idea of the flag and the anthem being the focus at that time, not a bunch of overpaid jackasses mugging for the camera. And just FYI, it was up to the teams whether they were out on the field during the anthem or not until 2009. I can't dig up any stats on which teams did what, but the earliest occurance goes back to the 1960's in the NFL. And I really don't care what the MLB has or has not been doing.

I hope so. That would be the smart thing to do. MLB lost a lot of fans who were angered by the players strike in '94. But that's a long time ago and mlb has a golden opportunity to win over some disgruntled nfl fans - especially with the playoffs right around the corner.
I know there have been a couple of mlb asshats, but generally speaking the demographics of the teams do not favor the SWJs. Unlike football and basketball, baseball is not majority AA. The Hispanic players on the teams seem really grateful to be out of their native shitholes and playing baseball in the US.
Unless Manfred is a total bozo in the mold of Goodall, he'll realize that mlb players "taking a knee" would be the stupidest move ever.

I might tune back in if that becomes the policy. If they were to couple it with Goodell being shown the door, so much the better. I'm definately a bit pissed that some Saints players sat during the anthem. Other than CFB, I don't really follow any other sports. I'd watch rugby, if it were on at decent times. Baseball weeds out snowflakes and does not coddle them. They also have a farm system where players can get demoted to ride the bus. there is also better sportsmanship and better relationships with the fans.
NFL and NBA is trash compared to baseball and the MLB.

He argues that we can keep running millions of dollars of debt, tinker with social compacts, and do whatever the hell we want with no consequences because of technology. The Latin American players are from poor countries and realize the opportunities that the US has given them and they tend not to make waves. Different demos that the NFL.

If the teams stay in the locker room, it will be worse. It's not like the fans won't notice. Same if they stop playing the national anthem. Every other major sport does it , as do HS games and college games. It's part of the entertainment and was supposed to be a feel good, unity moment for the fans and teams.
Two weeks ago, Ohio State played Army at OSU and not only was there the anthem, etc. but the Army Parachute team floated into the stadium to a huge applause, with Brutus the OSU mascot running up to each member as he safely landed on the field , cheering and shaking the guys' hand.

He argues that we can keep running millions of dollars of debt, tinker with social compacts, and do whatever the hell we want with no consequences because of technology. I always point around at everything (indoor plumbing, refrigeration, cell phones, etc) and point out that it was all the product of hard work and a social compact. None of it is permanent- just because you want it to be.

Last I looked at it, the NFL revenue is about 40% from the broadcast contracts. And that was on about $13 B or so. But these contracts were negotiated, largely before any of this protest BS began. And it is unclear whether the current payments are tied to current ratings.
The point is that it is hard to say whether ratings decline will be directly and immediately impacted by the drop in ratings. However, that 60% is gained from other sources (assuming ticket sales, advertising, merchandising, and sponsorships), it means that it makes sense to avoid all sources of NFL revenue, if you are so inclined.
The funny thing is that the NFL revenue sharing part of the players' CBA means that drops in revenue will mean a hit to all players paychecks, whether they stand or sit. That's not gotta be a good thing for team unity and esprit de corp.

Do away with steroids. Smaller, slower players don't have as much momentum and there is not as much kinetic energy in a collision of two of them. There might also be a connection between steroids and brain injury. The NFL should finally get serious about drug testing.

PeeWee is incredibly safe. The kids simply cannot hit each other hard enough to hurt anyone from the collision (although a twisted ankle or knee is always possible, even if there is no opponent). I would argue that high school and college ball are safe. It is only the very large, very fast NFL, where the energy of collisions can get beyond the level where the soft tissues can absorb the shock wave without it traveling through the brain tissue, that there is an issue.

We've technically never been at war with North Korea, as the intervention in 1950 was done under the auspices of the UN. The US declaring war would have resulted in de facto recognition of north Korea (it's impossible to declare war unless you are declaring against somebody), and the legal argument at the time was that the Republic of Korea was the legitimate government of all of Korea, and those folks north of the 38th parallel were an illegimate government. The armistice of 1953 was not a peace treaty, either, just an agreement between the United Nations Command, the North Korean People's Army, and Chinese People's Volunteers for a cease-fire. There has never been a declared war, nor has there ever been a declared peace.
