++++ Good news! You don't have to travel all the way to New Mexico in order to not shop at a Circle K. Circle K is an international chain of convenience stores, founded in 1951 in El Paso, Texas, United States. The company declared bankruptcy in 1990 and went through several owners; it is now owned and operated by the Canada-based Alimentation Couche-Tard. Today, it is present in most of the 50 U.S. states, all Canadian provinces, and a number of European countries (Denmark, Estonia, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, Russia, and Sweden). In Asia and Latin America, the brand is used by franchisees. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Circle_K Posted by: Anon Y. Mous at September 24, 2017 10:19 PM (FUu/Z) 35

The stuff of nightmare is their plain bread. They butter it with pain. They set their clocks by death-watch beetles, and thrive the centuries. They were the men with the leather-ribbon whips who sweated up the Pyramids seasoning it with other people's salt and other people's cracked hearts. They coursed Europe on the White Horse of the Plague. They whispered to Caesar that he was mortal, then sold daggers at half-price in the grand March sale. Some must have been lazing clowns, foot props for emperors, princes, and epileptic popes. Then out on the road, Gypsies in time, their populations grew as the world grew, spread, and there was more delicious variety of pain to thrive on. The train put wheels under them and here they run down the long road out of the Gothic and Baroque; look at their wagons and coaches, the carving like medieval shrines, all of it stuff once drawn by horses, mules, or, maybe, men.

New Star Trek was in some ways just what I expected but in some ways better than I expected.
First, it's not sci-if. It's space drama and adventure, but there's no science. There's some hipsters dialogue trying to strike some vague science pose in the Neil "I'm sooooper smart" Tyson way, but that's it. The writers have no science backgrounds. They know TV. The show, however, kept me interested. It's a total cocktease, but I'm interested to see what kind of fuckup the main character really is. She's gonna start a war! Yay! Not in the smart Ben Sisko way, just some hamfisted herpaderp way. I also think she's being gaslighted by the Romulus's. No way the Vulcans did what Sarek says they did. No. Fucking. Way. Overall, I'm fine with it. Guess I will get the CBS All Access while this show is airing. Posted by: Robert at September 24, 2017 10:53 PM (mknWS) 175

@mnw, rickl:
It got less than 5% in the 2013 elections, and it pulled over 40% in a few parts of eastern Germany. So it's not quite time to despair, maybe. But Merkel will have to reshuffle the government to deal with this. She could continue her coalition with the Social Democrats, but that would leave the AfD as the largest opposition party, meaning it gets to make rebuttal speeches to the government and such. So she'll make a coalition with the Greens and the Free Democrats (small pro-business party), making the Social Democrats the chief opposition party and denying the AfD that platform. The fix is in, all the way down. Posted by: T at September 24, 2017 11:04 PM (MmeCn) 194
Re the German elections, an odd data point.
There's a German guy who worked in aviation (civil/military) his whole life, and is one of those super-avid airshow afficionados who literally travels the world going to shows and museums. Ran into him that way, and yesterday he came by at the Miramar show. I didn't bring it up, but he said he was glad he was missing the election because he was afraid he would have to vote for AfD (the "far right" - ha! party). I asked WTF Merkel and Co. were thinking (on most things) the past few years, and he threw up his hands and agreed it was insane. I think it's too little/too late for Germany and most of western Europe, in a sense. They'll survive, but in a degraded state. The important thing is that eastern Europe stave off the idiotic pressure to adopt the self-destructive behaviors of the westerners. So far, so good. For their sake, Trump's election was a god-send, potentially. Posted by: rhomboid at September 24, 2017 11:04 PM (QDnY+) 195

Trump is doing what he always does. He comes out with a blast that sounds aggressive and harsh. The other side goes nuts. He slightly softens or hardens depending on how things are going.
Then he does a slow walkback and ends up in a reasonable position as perceived by normals. Meanwhile the left has gone completely bonkers and looks whacked out to normals. Someone on another site mentioned that Trump was turning the left into pretzels, getting them to defend MS-13 and the Norks. My response was:
It's like the scene from A Few Good Men, "For us to win, Jessep has to say he gave the order." "And you can get him to say that?" "I think he wants to say it! He made a decision, and that's it! He eats breakfast yards from Cubans trained to kill him. No one tells him how to run his unit. Least of all me. I'll lead him right where he's dying to go." The left has always despised America and American culture. But they've always had to pretend otherwise. They'd love to openly support MS 13 (Oppressed brown people!), and North Korea (Standing against capitalism and colonialism!). They love it because they've built an intellectual structure around the notion that they're smarter than everyone else, and so if the masses believe X, then they'll believe Y just to demonstrate their supposed superior intellect. The left has always despised America and American culture. But they've always had to pretend otherwise.
Not at all. They've always been pretty vocal about how America is the worst place on Earth and the source of all the evil in the world. THe only time they changed was when Barky (who hated America even more than the AMerican left) slimed into the Oval Office. Only then did they pretend to like "America" because they saw Barky running around the world on his Traitor Tour blaming America for everything (for which he should have been impeached) and they harbored hopes that Barky would actually turn America into the American Socialist Superstate (which he pretty much did). Only for that did they stop burning American flags and start calling patriots "traitors"; because they figured that they had killed America and could now support the ASS that was being built in its place and stealing its name. Well, my father got through his hip surgery without a hitch. So far. Over the weekend, they had some sort of priority list. At the top was emergency surgery, those needing something done right then or they'd die or wish they were dead. They had my father on the second level below that. Anyway, they didn't know when they'd get to him, and they did around 11AM, with 5 minutes notice they were going to take him. They started around 12 noon, were finished by 1PM and he was back in the room around 2 - 2:30PM. It turned out the socket was okay, and all they had to replace was the ball, so they call it a partial hip replacement. Also, it turned out he had a UTI and was dehydrated. That and the Ambien made three things that put him out of his mind. That was a mess trying to deal with him early Sat. ">>Nancy Scheper-Hughes goes on to declare that "hate speech is an act of violence." No, violence is violence. You don't get to equate your hurt feelings with a physical attack." Violence is a word that the left uses to conflate different things. You're saying "physical attack" but if you even raise your hands to defend from that then you are committing "violence" too. By conflating the attack with actions taken in defense, making both violence then it isn't a big step to go from the physical to the emotional since the emotional is where the left has its home. See you're attacking their "home" what could be more violent? Posted by: geoffb at September 24, 2017 11:43 PM (zOpu5) Posted by: Anna Puma (HQCaR) at September 24, 2017 11:43 PM (Ktewm) 305

Fall!!! glorious fall!!!
This afternoon, I went to the grocery store in a steam room, came home and collapsed in the air conditioning. Less than eight hours later, fall has actually showed up! (Better late than never.) It is so much cooler and drier now, I may actually survive. I swear I used my AC more this past week than I did all of August and the first couple weeks of September. When it's nice like this out, I just open the big door and prop open the screen door. The critters just wander in and out at will. Saves me having to get up every five minutes to exchange one dog for the other or a cat or two for a dog. And now I can go back to real cooking. I really suck at hot weather cooking. The place is subset of the Groom Lake facility where they develop and test some of the most secret black projects ever. The Stealth planes were indeed tested there. It became part of the UFO lore, as supposedly where they took the crashed flying saucers and dead/live aliens for research and back engineering and all that crap. The US govt. used to not even admit it existed, but Jonathan Turley managed to make them admit its existence back during the Clinton days in a lawsuit. It was something serious, based on claims of former workers (the govt's position was that doesn't exist so you have no claim). He found some Catch-22 in the law that forced them to admit it was real. Clinton had to sign some executive order officially exempting it from whatever laws Turley was using. So Jonathan Turley had the notch in his belt of making the govt acknowledge it existed. There's a famous "deadly force is authorized. Abandon all hope ye who enter here" sign on the road leading to it. qdpsteve, they could have toned down the gore and lost nothing of the story. Poppy is the evil mastermind, think sociopath CEO soccer mom, running a drug cartel. And she kidnaps Elton John to provide entertainment. Gadget wise and some of the scenes, where they ever channeling Roger Moore's 007 exploits.
I may write a letter to the producers however over the abuse all the robots received in this movie. Why did Iggy and his partners have to destroy the robo-dogs along with the gleaming pink and white android woman? Sure they were trying to kill the heroes but should they be executed for following their programs? Seriously it was so unfair! Nyah! Perusing social media this evening, people I never would have thought even had political opinions are letting everyone know they are NOT okay with this NFL nonsense, especially on Gold Star Mother's Day. H. Allen Smith, who was a writer for Paramount for a while wrote:
"Soon after I joined the geniuses of the fourth floor I was delighted to learn that Raymond Chandler occupied on office down the hall from me. For a couple of years I had been a Raymond Chandler fan, reading those superb detective novels he turns out. They are hard-boiledest or hardest-boiled detective stories I have ever read and quite likely the best written. I wanted to meet Mr. Chandler right off. I expected to find a hulking guy with a flat nose and football-shaped biceps. He turned out to be the last man in the world I would have picked as the author of his books. He is a mild-mannered guy of medium size with black wavy hair, horn-rimmed glasses and a sensitive face. H looks like a poet is supposed to look." (H. Jews have to serve - men and women. Arabs don't (which is a good thing). Druzis tend to serve, though they don't have to. Religious Jews can get out of it - some do national service, instead. But a lot of the required males and females also get out of army service for any of a number of reasons (girls can get out of it just by being married). The numbers of those who are able to skip service are pretty high, these days. But it's really not good for future employment in Israel if a guy hasn't served - and it's really good for guys who have served in elite units and positions. Even so, army service doesn't really help things much, as far as respecting the nation. Israel still has a huge leftist contingent and Israeli leftists are even nuttier than American leftists. Two drunks with a nickel between them were arguing over what to play on the juke box until a tomato in a dress that was too tight a year ago pushed the key that started off something noisy and hot. One of the drunks wanted to dance and she gave him a shove. So he danced with the other drunk. She saw me sitting there with my stool tipped back against the cigarette machine and change for a fin on the bar, decided I could afford a wet evening for two and walked over with her hips waving hello. 441: the consequences of today will take a few years to affect the NFL. It is a billion dollar industry after all. You can see the affects already. Patience. Some collapses are slow ones. These CTE lawsuits are going to be a doozie for the NFL. This whole SJW embrace is just a diversion from that. The NFL is going to get hurt big time when those lawsuits start flooding in. They're embracing "BLAME TRUMP FOR EVERYTHING" to distract and get in the good graces of those with power.

The NFL player's strike of 1982 put a real sour taste in my mouth; when they struck again in 1987 I quit watching totally. The players cared a whole helluva lot more about their wallets than The Game; guess what, from then on so did I.
MY BFF was apparently moar forgiving than me, and continued his fandom all the way until September, 2016, when Krapondick and other playas began dissing the anthem. I had obtained a free Official NFL Saints hat (his fave team) and offered it to him. He said "No thanks, I'm done with pro football" and I nearly fainted. This guy was die hard, threw SB parties every year, and so on. So to those newly bailing, welcome to the club. Posted by: Pandora's Box aka gumdrop gorilla at September 25, 2017 12:51 AM (7DXtP) Israel was very much a socialist state from its inception. So many of the European Jews who established the state were die-hard socialists. The Kibbutz system is the greatest implementation the Earth has seen of, just about, every leftist concept imaginable. Perfect size communities (from 100 to 500 people) of intelligent, motivated leftists. If you want to know anything about Western leftists all you need to do is study Israeli kibbutzim. And pretty much all of them were total failures, with the kibbutz system pretty much collapsing, though it is true that the bulk of Israel's really elite soldiers hailed from the kibbutzim (but I attribute that the fact that the kibbutzim were farming communities and farming just tends to build good soldiers). I spent a few years on several kibbutzim and learned everything I ever needed to know about leftism then. It was very interesting. neither tarnished nor afraid. He is the hero, he is everything. He must be a complete man and a common man and yet an unusual man. He must be the best man in his world and a good enough man for any world. Posted by: redc1c4 at September 25, 2017 01:05 AM (dqXSA) 475
Everything here at Casa de Peon in AJ is safe and sound, just as I left it in March, except very, very dusty. Met the new neighbor next door, seems like a good guy. He is renting from the Mexican guy who has moved on to newer neighborhood. Nicest house on the block, too.
The Suburban ran kind of shitty most of the way here from Hoover Dam, and when I stopped to take on fuel in Wickenburg, it failed to start. Electric fuel pump was hot, and not running. Crawled under with a hammer to give it a wahck, and it began running on its own, so I opened the bleed screw on the fuel filter, and got a shot of Diesel on my arm for my trouble. But it started right up, and ran fine for few miles, and then lapsed back into running poorly, but never quit until I shut down in the driveway here. Might just be a tired fuel pump, or maybe there is some debris in the tank that blocks the filter sock on the pickup pipe after driving a while. Either way, I will fix it before venturing home. The owner of the Patriots (ha!) says:
'There is no greater unifier in this country than sports' The Romans would be so proud. They really knew how to keep their shit together. Posted by: Friedtoe Bandito at September 25, 2017 07:02 AM (UdKB7) 565

The Romans would be so proud. They really knew how to keep their shit together. Posted by: Friedtoe Bandito Sounds like a good marketing slogan. So in other words, nobody REALLY believes that. It isn't still Victor Kiam, is it? So, not selling razor blades too. Posted by: Bozo Conservative....living on the prison planet at September 25, 2017 07:04 AM (S6Pax) 566
In the continued politisacian of everything.
I went to a showing of The Holy Grail with a 1 hour Q/A after with John Clesse even though I know he's a lefty he interjected Trump snark into his talk. Being a Jersey crowd they ate it up. semi-runined what was a good event. Posted by: Kreplach at September 25, 2017 07:05 AM (2JcMg) 567

All of their dogmas are now being held up for scrutiny and ridicule, and they hate it. Me, I have no sympathy, just the warm and fuzzy feeling of schadenfreude. Sacred cow is good eatin'. If you fix it right.
Mike Tomlin pretty much has to sit this Villanueva down now, right? Put him in for some team discipline? After all, after going to school on our taxpayer money, he should know it's important to follow orders. Come on, Tomlin. Be a real coach. Dare ya. You know I was giving some thought to the NFL's Unity commercial and they have a point that we, as Americans, should try to Unify. After all, we're all in the same states and communities. We all pay the same taxes, attend the same schools and live among each other. Further, we have the same past and the same history. We've survived the same losses and emerged with the same victories...as Americans.
It's just makes you wish that we had a common symbol that could be placed high and low that inspired everyone. I used to think it was our flag but I guess the spoiled 24 year old millionaires have finally taught me. They should give up presenting the flag and the country and the military and everything else that triggers them and just fly the thing that they all love the most, and can agree on: The dollar. Oh, wait all those guys owned slaver or were racist. Never mind, let's just burn the NFL to the ground, salt the ashes and move on.
