Saturday Morning Weird News Dump

sat morn coffee mug and baby .jpg

(Coffee? Yes. Kid? Nope.)

***

Saturday again. Where the hell did this week go? So, let's have some caffeine and delve into somethings that didn't get too much attention this past week here at the HQ.

OK Morons. No running with scissors, knives or javelins. No pulling ponytails, pig tails or hair extensions. Play nice and have a fun time in this open thread.

Have a great weekend!!! Hope you're not raptured.

6 Dude, I was so willowed! Well, lest ye missed my brilliant thoughts from the EMT, here goes.

Rand Paul knows that if this "fix" passed that would be it. The Republicans would own it, the fix wouldn't fix anything, and in 2 years when the whole thing is still crumbling the answer would be "We tried it the democrat way, we tried it the republican way, both failed. Now we need single payer, it is the only way out of this mess."

13 Hey..wanna see some weird news?

Frederick Md rape.

When first broke locally, there was absolutely no mention of their immigration status, Ice having a retainer for an earlier crime, nor any of the information which might influence one to have a question about DREAMers. It was completely stripped out of the local report, which has now been begrudgingly updated to reflect our information concerning their immigration status.

Oh, the information was available, and confirmed, as the UK Mail had a very fact filled article on the same day as our original local story broke.

23 One of the places I lived installed red light cameras. We opposed it, stating that it was just a money making scheme for the gov. After all, you were issued a red light violation if only your bumper broke the plane of the "Stop" line, but you were stopped at the light. We were told that the system was only installed at dangerous intersections, they were to improve safety. After a few years, the data showed that the intersections were not safer. The response from gov? We can't take them out. Look at how much money they make!

Remember the recent Op-Ed authored by Penn law professor Amy Law and USD Law professor Larry Alexander?

It argued that hard work, marriage, saving and responsible adulthood was a better way to live than the opposites.

I was one of the rare junior officers that could have awarded Three Days Bread and Water. Never did it myself, but saw it done.

The old yardarm hanging and flogging punishments were in Vic's Navy. Those restrictions on punishment were opposed by 90% of the then current seagoing officer corps, They were convinced that such punishments were needed to run a ship.

The UCMJ has limits on what you can do, set for rank and position.

I always liked the notion of a Navy disciplinary action being referred
to as Captain's Mast. In my mind it always conjured up images of
yardarms and walking the plank. Or at least someone getting keelhauled.

Posted by: Muldoon at September 23, 2017 09:14 AM (wPiJc)

The "official" name is Non-Judicial Punishment or NJP. It was called that because by the time you made it there you were already guilty. The XO did the "investigation" and made recommendations to the Captain. It is only used for low level rule breaking and was limited in the sentences handed out. Captain's Mast is what everybody called it though due to tradition where violators were called "before mast" in view of the who ship's company to witness. The usual punishment in those days was lashes.

Now if you want big time punishment you have to hold them for a General or Special Court-martial. And no, captains no longer have the authority to execute sailors at sea. However, I still think they can officiate marriages.

Muldoon, there are also meritorious Captain's Masts (often part of the a general "Captain's Mast", where beneficial actions are recognized. Aboard subs, a "Hollywood shower" (a shower where you got to run the water while showering, vice a "Navy shower", where you wet down, turn off the water, wash, and only turn the water back on to rinse, to conserve fresh water) was often given as part of the recognition.

119 One of the main attacks against Trump and his supporters, from the start, was that he and his supporters form a "cult of personality." They never called it that by name but the implications were made in stories about him and those who supported him. It was also implied in the derogatory names that his supporters were called incessantly.

That the Democrats see every leader, the world over, as the head of a personality/identity cult. That Obama and Hillary were both quite creepily so. This was covered as something cute not eerie and/or evil. But with Trump it was portrayed as frightening. Hitler born again.

Now if Luther Strange loses the primary runoff that idea, of Trump as the leader of a personality cult, is refuted. Refuted in the only way these things can be, by actions not words.

What this leaves his opposition is the unsettling reality that there is a very large group of people out there who do not worship Trump as Trump but are devoted to the policies/ideas he espoused. That destroying Trump will not destroy his supporters since he is but an instrument they are using and if it breaks they will pickup another. One which may be blunter and more destructive but will work toward their goal.

right, the smear of the Trump supporter (not just Trump) showed a really nasty side of the leftists, though it always existed. But with Trump succeeding, they went full bore with "all white people are Nazi/KKK unless they denounce everything about Trump". Of course in reality the patriots voting Trump want to stop the DC/NY mafia that is the end of liberty.

Now we have Kimmel coordinating talking points with Schemer, and he goes right to the "personal destruction" that the left always engages in. He calls Cassidy a liar "Lied to my Face".

But Kimmel was lying, and these babies have always gotten the care even under Medicaid and other programs. Kimmel also did not reveal he was being a puppet for Schemer, coordinating the messaging for months.

In a sense letting Obamacare fail may be politically smart. The latest fix doesn't fix much, but block granting power back to the states is pretty huge, as I see it. The DC Mob really doesn't want that.

??? I thought this was well-known.

One of the greatest officers the Air Force has produced, Col. John Boyd, was nicknamed "Forty Second" Boyd, for his ability to reverse position on someone on his six within forty seconds, as a result of his development and application of the OODA loop concept. (If any in The Horde are unfamiliar with Col. Boyd, I highly recommend a DuckDuckGo session for familiarization with both him and OODA.)

Air Force fighter pilots are reknown for two characteristics:

One, an out-sized ego.
Two, the "forty second" moniker. Not, unfortunately, for the reason Col. Boyd held it.

Women with experience of Air Force fighter pilots I have known have confirmed both.

yeah there is still too much flowing through DC, and they will add SOME strings. But at this point giving states control is the better option, at least in theory.

I don't know how the block grants are apportioned, so maybe they do have to keep going back to beg. From hearing Scott Walker it sounded like this would be good for more responsible states, but less good for CA or IL that will lean toward full socialized medicine. devil in the details

In the end, care has to be limited (2nd tier, or 3rd) for those that get free stuff, and that should be limited to citizens or maybe otherwise legal entries.

258 Gotta give Maryland credit for something.

The MVA (State level agency) has has had a vehicle emissions program for years.

Every two years, you drive up to a VEIP center, hand them $14.00, and they spend two minutes downloading data from your vehicle diagnostics port.

A money generating job banker both the State, and the VEIP employees..
Similar to how Delaware has eliminated most toll booth operators, and have gone with RFID toll paying, yet Maryland resists going this way, to ensure continuing longevity of the Job Bank.

But, they implemented a new DIY kiosk where you can do your own emissions testing, and the cost drops from $14.00 to $10.00

Tried it, and it's pretty painless.

Trump has sided with America instead of NFL protestors, and the Left, which has HATED pro football for decades, now has to love it. Meanwhile, Goodell has gone black and he ain't coming back. That will not end well for him, but will for America.

All of the so-called contemptuous accounts were made by his political enemies during an election. That was just about as credible as the Scankles' BS Russia lies. As for the DNA evidence it was not conclusive. And on top of that at the time he was accused of having sex with the Hemmings woman he was in France having an affair with some elderly French count's wife. 337 I think Trump is cleaner than most of the NY/DC power players.

Posted by: illiniwek at September 23, 2017 09:59 AM (yKAUL)

How clean he is has come as a bit of a surprise actually. Also how much of his persona as brash and a big partier, etc., are just stage management. I guess you don't get far in the New York development world if you get the reputation of being a teddy bear. Over all it looks like a lot of his success is due to working like a madman for decades (and not giving up when he faced reversals).

339 You should listen to Vic. I told him all about it over a glass of port.

340 Political contests in those days were even more raucous than they are now. Everybody had their own "pet" newspaper or broadsheet and they made all kinds of outlandish accusations. But in those days all the newspapers were not in the back pocket of one candidate and there were no political parties to stir the pot. Unlike today when the MFM is uniformly all in one Party.

341 mnw - The dissenters here are not so much interested in Jefferson's play time, as they are in the presentation of 'evidence' and 'consensus' being used by the Left/prog/Liberals to advance claims that they find to be politically useful, when the 'evidence' is non existent or flimsy, and there is no unbiased 'consensus'.

My dad knew an AF pilot stationed in Germany who was the opposite. Quiet, Christian family man who happened to get the best scores in the international competitions. Instead of questioning their assumption of what a pilot *had* to be like they decided he didn't have "pilot spirit" and booted him (well, whatever it's called when they don't renew the contract or whatever) causing the base to preform much worse after that time.

I did a different kind of service for years, business not residential, was pretty cheap but fast.

Maybe you could mention a couple points to him, while starting with a compliment maybe, on how well he used to do it, maybe even recognize "hard to keep up when others hire illegals" (or something)

He'd probably appreciate that you are even paying attention, and do the little extras. Or if he hasn't raised his price for years, might be getting his "pay raise" by going faster. (I used to do that actually)

anyway ... direct friendly talk might make you both feel better about the arrangement. Sadly, the way to "get things done" is often to be the biggest asshole (squeaky wheel), but a lot of us don't want to live like that.

the Walmart here has been out of 22 ammo for years ... they say they get it but it goes right out. But I haven't even checked lately.
