Insane: Woman Freaks Out Over Hobby Lobby's Display of Raw Cotton, Shrieking That Cotton is Oppression, Or Something

Our "elites" have taught people that it's good and profitable to be a lunatic.

A Texas woman has been getting ridiculed online for being "too sensitive" after she blasted the arts-and-crafts chain Hobby Lobby for selling faux raw cotton stalks — which she found offensive.

"This decor is WRONG on SO many levels," Daniell Rider posted on Facebook this past Thursday, along with a photo of the phony plants.

"There is nothing decorative about raw cotton…A commodity which was gained at the expense of African-American slaves," she said. "A little sensitivity goes a long way. PLEASE REMOVE THIS ‘decor.'"

The cotton in question isn't even real cotton -- it's fake. Like her practiced outrage.

And this isn't even the first case of Cotton Derangement this week.

Lipscomb University president Randy Lowry was forced to send an apology letter to black students Friday after they visited his home to discuss college life — and became outraged by a number of cotton-stem centerpieces that he had set up around the residence.

"The content of the centerpieces was offensive, and I could have handled the situation with more sensitivity," Lowry wrote. "I sincerely apologize for the discomfort, anger or disappointment we caused and solicit your forgiveness."

140 Lipscomb University president Randy Lowry was forced to send an apology letter to black students Friday after they visited his home to discuss college life - and became outraged by a number of cotton-stem centerpieces that he had set up around the residence.

++++

He was forced? Who forced him, the students. Were they armed? Is that how students forced the University president to apologize?

The article doesn't say, but I'm guessing some student sent him a hysterical tweet and he promptly responded by bending over.

I am getting seriously annoyed with the media reporting that people in a position of power were forced to do something that they actually did voluntarily. That they probably were happy to do anyway.

Also, the only conservative in the class. Each week they had to give a presentation on a topic with detail instructions such as "racism" (I'm not kidding). He stuck to his guns on every issue, including being against the $15 minimum wage, for traditional marriage, against illegal immigration, etc. The instructor even called him to stay after class one time, saying that while he was wrong (on everything, of course - she was a black feminist lesbian former Army officer who loved loved loved Obama) - she admired him for sticking to his guns, which he probably also defended (can't remember if they actually had a gun topic).

280 Years ago I took a music class. A man came in whose family member was a slave. He taught us the songs his relative passed down that he used to sing when he was picking cotton.

It was a great learning experience and the man seemed at peace with it. He explained very calmly and reasonably about the evils of slavery and how faith played such a large role in moving beyond it. It was done so tactfully that you really developed a deep disgust for anyone involved in that practice. You could see the real human effects and still hear great the pain in his voice. But his message was one of hope and forgiveness. And he meant it.

That still sticks with me. Good times, those were, when people appealed to your compassion instead on anger and enmity.

Most historical places seem to be run by sane people and have not yet turned into SJW revisions of history: Colonial Williamsburg, Mount Vernon, Civil War battlefields keeping their confederate monuments, etc. I think people choosing to go into that discipline often have a sense that history extends beyond their limited sphere on this earth, needs proper preservation. Today, Cambodia is one of the trendiest overseas travel destinations for lefties.

241 years ago, the newly formed United States inherited a pre-existing system of slavery from the English, French, Spanish and Dutch colonial powers in North America, then at first set up up a governmental system which allowed those comparatively few states with slaves in them to continue, not as Federally-imposed policy, but instead as a laissez-faire hands-off system of government. Then in 1861 we switched to a hand-on "strong"-style central government and the VERY FIRST thing we did was forcibly outlaw slavery nationwide. One of the first nations in the world to do so.

377 The use of cotton in home decor isn't unusual in the South. My mom would save cotton stalks in the fall and make wreaths of them at Christmas. Cotton is an interesting, pretty plant when used for decoration.
Posted by: Cloyd Freud, Unemployed

I used to do Civil War reenacting, and we went South, as the one and only full time Federal unit. They had us crossing this field, and we realized that this was a cotton filed that had been harvested. We stopped the advance to gawk and pick bits of cotton and stick it in our hats. After the battle, they asked us why we stopped, and we told them. We all laughed.

463 359 75 years ago, Japan invaded dozens of countries, massacred the inhabitants, enslaved the women and "sex workers," and committed countless atrocities.

Today, Japan is perceived as hip and cool. Totally forgiven.

40 years ago, Cambodia committed a heinous genocide, killing 3 million.

That was over 150 years ago.

Today: Not forgiven.

They had us crossing this field, and we realized that this was a cotton filed that had been harvested. We stopped the advance to gawk and pick bits of cotton and stick it in our hats. After the battle, they asked us why we stopped, and we told them. We all laughed."

We see northerners taking pictures of cotton fields every fall. They really are visually striking just before picking.

We used to pick those "bits of cotton" you mention. Mechanical picking isn't very efficient--a lot of cotton fiber is left. Some farmers would have hand pickers work a field after mechanical harvesting. It was called "scrapping" and it paid more than regular picking.

From wikipedia:

"During and immediately following the Revolutionary War, abolitionist laws were passed in most Northern states and a movement developed to abolish slavery.
...
Beginning during the revolution and in the first two decades of the postwar era, every state in the North abolished slavery, ending with New Jersey in 1804, although in some cases existing slaves were not liberated immediately. These were the first abolitionist laws in the Atlantic World.[48][49]

In Massachusetts, slavery was successfully challenged in court in 1783 in a freedom suit by Quock Walker; he said that slavery was in contradiction to the state's new constitution of 1780 providing for equality of men."

They outlawed it as fast as they could.

548 There's a great - actually one of the very best - episode of Our Gang where Farina and Stymie play orphaned brothers. Older brother Farina has been caring for Stymie and trying to keep him out of the hands of the authorities. Eventually the whole Gang joins in to keep the two brothers together.

It is a sweet, funny, and poignant episode that contains what has to be one of the single most sympathetic portrayals of black folks of its entire era.

So naturally it was banned back in the 60s, for reasons that no one has ever really figured out except that lots of black folks were in it so it must...somehow...be rayciss.

The episode, a true classic, has only recently regained its reputation among aficionados.

549 The point of socialism is to redistribute wealth and power from the many to a few politically connected. Sure they may throw a sop to the masses to make them feel like they got something from the revolution, but by and large socialism only serves to make the leaders more powerful and more wealthy. That is what these stupid shits don't understand.

558 I have that decor. I bought it because it reminds me of my grandparents who were both born on cotton farms and picked cotton their whole childhood. They even picked cotton after they moved to the city when they needed extra money. They'd go drive out and work as day laborers for a few days.

Their parents were poor tenant farmers. Cotton kept my family alive. So...yeah anyone who says it is nothing but a slave thing can kindly fuck off.

I know that. The "1861" date was the date of the adoption of the strong central government when Lincoln declared martial law nationwide. That forever changed the way the federal government worked, from a distant semi-irrelevant body to an in-your-face controlling power. And the first policy enacted after he adopted of this new type of government was the abolition of slavery nationwide.

True, with exceptions -- those areas which were already under Federal control were exempted, like New Orleans and the surrounding parishes. As has often been pointed out, Lincoln "abolished" slavery where (at that point) he had no authority to do so, and let it stand where he did have the authority.

Well, it all worked out in the end. Until now.

Then the sugar was used to make the rum. It was called the "Triangular Trade" and it brought a lot of wealth to the New England Colonies. I hate the northerners who act like the "North" had nothing to do with slavery. They were in it up to their necks until it wasn't profitable any more.
