Shock: Susan Rice Admits to Congress She Unmasked Trump Campaign Figures, Despite Having Previously Claimed "I Know Nothing About That"

But she says that she didn't do it for political reasons, and she didn't leak it.

No, she just unmasked them so that their names could be spread around (thanks to Obama's last-weeks change of rules to permit more spreading of sensitive information) and then leaked to their buddies in the press.

Former national security adviser Susan Rice privately told House investigators that she unmasked the identities of senior Trump officials to understand why the crown prince of the United Arab Emirates was in New York late last year, multiple sources told CNN.

That's a lie. How do I know? Because of her long history of lying.

Not only was she the Designated Liar for the "spontaneous protest" lie to save Obama and Hillary on Benghazi, but she has previously lied about knowing "nothing" about Devin Nunes' charge that officials, like herself, unmasked Trump associates:

Woodruff: We've been following a disclosure by the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, Devin Nunes, that in essence, during the final days of the Obama administration, during the transition, after President Trump had been elected, that he and the people around him may have been caught up in surveillance of foreign individuals in that their identities may have been disclosed. Do you know anything about this?

Rice: I know nothing about this. I was surprised to see reports from Chairman Nunes on that count today.

Don't worry, though: Your GOP is on the case.

Trey Gowdy and other House members seem okay with this precedent, so I guess there’s nothing to see here. "I didn't hear anything to believe that she did anything illegal," Florida Rep. Tom Rooney explained to CNN. Unless Rice or some other Obama official admits to leaking classified information, this statement is surely true.

...

Has Rice earned that trust? This, after all, is the woman who went on national television and repeated a bunch of Ben Rhodes-authored falsehoods regarding the September 11, 2012, Benghazi terror attacks, claiming they were a "spontaneous reaction" to "hateful and offensive video." This is the woman who went on PBS to lie about her role in unmasking, although there was apparently nothing wrong with it. Rice didn’t tell Woodruff "I can't disclose that kind of sensitive information," or "no comment," she told her 'I know nothing about this." Rice is extraordinarily comfortable lying to the American people.

Pro-Tip: When you only play to lose, you can expect to lose an awful lot.

But maybe that's always been the plan.

I once wrote a hilarious short story about a guy who, as a performance-art project, tried to get a book manuscript rejected by exactly 100 publishers.

So, to that end, he sat down and typed out a bunch of free-association gobblydegook, essentially a random bunch of words telling a nonlinear nonsensical story. No proofreading, no editing -- just raw ramblings.

Sent it out. What happens?

Publishers get in a bidding war for the manuscript. An avant-garde masterpiece! Try as he might, he can't convince them he was trying to fail.

Book becomes a bestseller, but his art project fails.

51 Some progress on the legal front.

My wish list:

DWS gets exposed in a huge scandal tied in with Arwan.

Loretta Lynch and Jimmy Drama get exposed for tanking the Hillary investigation.

Russiagate collusion is a sham. The Russians may not even have done the hacking.

There was significant voting fraud in 2016 (the Commission should be able to show this, even with just public data).

Rice and Rhodes and others get indicted for leaking classified material.

This may take a year to play out. I can't wait. If only a couple play out the way I hope it will have momentous consequences for how the 2018 mid-terms play out.

In the official retelling of events, State had not been informed by the Emirati consular apparatus that the Crown Prince would be coming Stateside. Foggy Bottom was taken by surprise when he abruptly showed up without thus politely notifying them of his plans.

So that's what triggered Rice's entirely justifiable national security suspicions, and caused her to have to exercise the unmasking powers which are fully within her legal purview. Again as per the official retelling of events.

As for why Rice then claimed on the record that she knew nothing at all of any such unmaskings? And how the unmasked identities then leaked to the press at politically convenient times? The official retelling is silent on those key points.

I bet she didn't but I would make an even better bet she knows who did or who likely did.

There was no other reason for Obama to set up a new, much wider system of sharing confidential information shortly before his term was to expire other than to make it much harder to prove exactly who leaked.

People like Rice who disseminated the information get plausible deniability and the information still gets out. The Chicago way, the Obama way.

95 Some good Horde humor in this one, well done.

Marcus is right, and it was noted from the outset - there may be mostly *legal* misbehavior here, slimy destructive and outrageous, but structured such that no crimes were committed (by Rice, that is). As noted, spreading this kind of info far more broadly than ever before - itself a scandal - accomplishes the leaking objective.

Of course I share Ignoramuses' hopes on multiple legal fronts. Though I am hesitant to handicap any of them, given our generally lawless situation, which also lacks even a coherent opposition party or force.

But I don't see any path back to rule of law absent the full prosecution of the troika of crimes Hillary and Co. are guilty of (we know this, it's not speculation, based on public info): Espionage Act, Public Records Act, various laws on bribery and conflict of interest.

131 Marcus I think you are defending the GOP (or Congress more generally) without a good basis, in terms of implying the Hill has no power to do anything.

1,000 years ago (that is, 15-20 years), Congress used its $ power, and the agencies cowered and bowed and scraped much of the time. Anything resembling ANY of the multiple scandals of the Obama years, both the ones involving crimes, and the others, were unthinkable.

For example DOJ/FBI not responding - slavishly - to Congressional requests for info and testimony and meetings related to the ongoing scandals/fake scandals. Unthinkable. One more way I don't recognize what's left of the country.

DOJ and the FBI have been tarnished, close to beyond repair, in the last few years. At least for serious people. Congress has some responsibility, because it failed, and continues to fail, to make any effort to clean things up. An amazing and appalling spectacle.

Dragging in an irrelevance (sarcastic reference to Nancy Pelosi doing things on Trump's behalf, wtff?) in an unrelated topic is beyond any assessment of "being correct", it is a mark of making the conversation - an unrelated one - all about your pet topic or peeve.

Even if you are correct (which I dispute), it is the hallmark of an utter jackass to do this. Even if you are correct, your intent to abuse everyone in this thread with MUH TRUMPTRAYAL is cultic. Unbalanced. It's every bit as neurotic and needy as a desire to make everything about yourself, but even more so, because you don't even have a "self" to make the conversation *about*.

186 Actually, Harry, no, not a bit (changed view about Roberts et al). Because it still is implausible, but mostly because such excuses fail to deal with the very real, demonstrated, and crippling collapse of the judiciary due to intellectual and character flaws of the people staffing it.

The O-care decision was no more ridiculous than many other, even recent, rulings. Just far more damaging, in a concrete direct way, to more Americans. Outlandish blackmail speculation is never trotted out to explain the avalanche of idiotic lawless behavior by judges and courts that is a nearly daily occurrence.

Hiding in what is essentially an optimistic escapist fantasy - that things are only off the rails because of B-movie plots in the background - further reduces the chances of any recovery.

If Rice was trying to find out why the crown prince of the UAE was coming to the U.S., then why the hell didn't she ask him before the Obama administration gave him permission to come here?

It wasn't Trump who gave the guy permission to enter the U.S., it was the Obama administration. If they suspected he was up to no good, then they either should have questioned him a lot more carefully before giving him permission, or they should have denied him permission.

Letting him in and then using their own decision to rationalize spying on Americans is bullshit.

244 I know history started five weeks ago, and is mostly just white males oppressing people, but actually there were previous intel scandals. Very old people may recall the Church committee, which created the basic structure of today's congressional oversight (and banned all sorts of bad stuff done, mostly in the 60s).

Congress can step in and ban/mandate whatever they want in terms of this topic (distribution of info, privacy, etc.).

What's interesting is that, in our degraded state, I have yet to hear even one voice calling for anything like this. Yes, the crimes and non-criminal outrageous behavior should be documented/punished, but the barn door also has to be closed even as those already-loose horses are rounded up and beaten.

267 You probably wouldn't laugh, but......

I got to thinking about that on 9/11.
I especially got to thinking about the attempt to hit the Capitol.

Would my/our reaction to a similar crime be the same today? Would there be more ....ambivalence?

The Left hates our traditional institutions, our power, and our wealth. So their reaction to 9/11 was mixed --- a lot of chickens-coming-home-to-roost sentiment, which they only briefly suppressed.

What happens when faith in our institutions is lost on the Right too?
=======

Yes, I know it makes me a terrible person because innocent people would be killed, but I wouldn't be too upset about it because a lot of guilty troublemaking mother fuckers would be killed too.

273 There's like 39 Bible verses about that. I'm going to try to find them in my new ESV. It'll be fun. There's maps in there and everything. Charts too.

Posted by: grammie winger

If you want to look up those word occurrences, you might want a concordance as well. The ones in reference Bibles are obviously too short.

On a related subject, does anyone know if there is a reference version of Hillary's book "What Happened" with appendices with maps showing the miracles of Hillary and the missionary journeys of Hillary? And a mini-concordance of Hillary-speak, so that we rightly understand what she means when she says that 1984 is about how we should love and trust totalitarian governments?

BTW grammie, although I have no theological or linguistic training, I've never seen anything negative ever written about the ESV by any conservative denomination. Everyone seems to love it. So, probably a sound choice.

280 FTA: "Nunes was forced to step aside from running the Russia investigation amid a House ethics inquiry into whether he improperly disclosed classified data. The ethics inquiry came in the aftermath of his bombshell comments that Obama administration officials had improperly unmasked the names of Trump associates, a revelation that Trump used as cover for his unsubstantiated claim that Obama had Trump Tower wiretapped during the election to spy on him."

CNN helpfully points out the REAL criminal - Nunes. He told the President something before he told his buddies on the Committee. Rice spreading names around to be leaked - no problem at all - completely justified because you see Obama was miffed.

We are so fucked.

Posted by: Ray Van Dune at September 14, 2017 03:57 PM (4hIeD)

281 A good argument can be made that Susan Rice is always lying. So much so that when she makes a statement, purportedly of fact, we can and should understand that the opposite is true. Thus, "I didn't unmask the names for political reasons" means "I totally unmasked the names purely for political reasons".

I can understand not wanting to, or choosing to spend your prayer time elsewhere, but not because she is beyond redemption. How do we know who is beyond redemption?

English Standard Version.

It's a "formal" version, like the NASB, meaning it tries to give the most literal meaning possible, instead of trying to come up with contemporary metaphors to match biblical metaphors.

288 The unmasked names and the conversations would be in the Presidential Daily Brief which was, in the Obama administration, available in electronic digital form and sent to over 30 people. It's not like they had to go to a shielded room to sign in to see it and others beyond the 30+ could have viewed all the info and the unmasked names. The 30 included John Podesta who was there until he took the top job at the Hillary campaign.
