I researched Rembrandt's life extensively. Funny thing: religious art in Holland wasn't especially popular during his lifetime and Rembrandt himself didn't lead (and wasn't known for) an especially devout, Christian life. He got in trouble with religious authorities for living with Hendrickje Stoffels after his wife Saskia died. He liked to drink and have a good time. Most of the money he made came from private portraits and public commissions.
I think Rembrandt made his famous religious paintings and etchings for his own sake, partly because it filled a spiritual need and partly because the themes of Christian artwork are so challenging and vast that no artist worthy of the name can resist them.

I haven't given it a lot of thought and am no OT scholar -- Jerusalem clearly a different significance for Jews than just a center for Israel's government. But there are still some good parallels to the decline and fall of the America the founders had established -- a place to worship their Christian faith as they saw fit. (while keeping the federal government limited so there would be no king or pope taking centralized control)
DC has fallen but I'm not ready to lament just yet ... we need an Ezekiel or Daniel? or someone to rebuild the faith ... Trump is not tearing down many walls so far, and not building the most important wall.

Visiting Fellows are salaried. They have a set schedule of speaking engagements to a university.
My understanding is that Manning's offer to become a "Visiting Fellow" has been revoked and instead, he is still has an invite to speak at some forum at the Kennedy School.
He will likely be paid a fee for speaking, but he will not be on a salaried status.

Our system says that the prosecution has to prove murder beyond a reasonable doubt. Murder includes intent to kill, because without intent it's just an unfortunate work accident.
The Judge didn't exactly rule that he lacked criminal intent; but he did rule that the Prosecution failed to show conclusively that he DID have criminal intent.
In the American System, that means acquittal.

Could it have been the defendant's or his attorney's idea? Don't know how law in MO works but I think I've heard of cases where the defendant can choose between a jury trial and bench (just the judge) trial. In cases where the defendant isn't likely to get much sympathy from ordinary folks who would sit on a jury, the defendant or his attorney will often go with a bench trial instead.

As per the US Constitution, every defendant in a felony case has the right to request a bench trial, i.e. a trial before a Judge only.
Defendants who think they can make a sympathetic case for themselves will always ask for a jury trial, since Judges are thought to be less sentimental and more inclined to follow the actual law. (not saying that always happens, of course)
A Defendant who thinks that the general public is going to be biased against him (Like this one) will just about always be advised to choose a bench trial.

The Slager incident? Far more complicated than that.
Traffic stop showed dude had open warrants. Dude did a runner. Officer pursued and caught up to him. Dude then physically fought with the cop.
Cop deployed Taser. Fired it. Didn't stop dude, who took off running again. Taser was jerked from the cop's grasp due to barbs and wires being tangled up with dude. Cop says he perceived this (incorrectly) in the heat of the moment as dude grabbing and getting control of his Taser, which is a serious thing and is a use-of-force escalation step.
Cop draws sidearm and lethally shoots fleeing dude in back. Cop then realizes Taser isn't on the dude after all. Goes back, picks up Taser. Takes it over and drops it beside where dude fell.
Plenty of blame to go round on both sides on that one.

The law is often its own worst enemy. Common sense often has little room inside courtrooms, and I get that.

Because there's the criminal "justice" system, and then there's common sense. They don't always go together.

My son served in boot camp five years ago with a Russian kid joining up to become a citizen. They became fast friends. According to my son, that Russian kid loves America, loves the Army, considers himself the luckiest man alive to have the chance at citizenship, and worked harder than anyone to prove himself worthy. Two minor observations only.
1) I'm surprised Judge Wilson announced this verdict on a Friday. Wow. Everybody KNEW this would be an NG verdict. So, I thought it would probably be announced on a Monday morning-- preferably a Monday morning with a bad thunderstorm expected in the evening. Instead, we now have a weekend, with pleasant weather, to see what comes next.
2) There wasn't enough evidence that the def planted the gun. I believe he did, but so what? You wouldn't be able to make a submissible case on tampering with evidence. A judge would direct out that charge on a pre-trial motion. The prosecutor did NOT just "swing for the fences," i.e., by charging Murder instead of the more readily provable lesser offense, as one poster above suggested.
Both J. Wilson & the former (elected) Circuit Attorney who decided to charge Shockley are white, btw.

Stretched Scud-ER and the like. They have indigenous local production capability for those. And can presumably build them cheap.
Their bona fide ICBMs are apparently powered by Ukrainian engines, from an old Soviet era factory. It's unclear how many such engines they have. They presumably don't and can't fabricate all those engines and their parts locally to NK.

I mean, yeah, I hope no one here thinks I'm saying the judge made the wrong decision. I have no idea. I do think it IS possible an ex-cop might get a different result than someone who had never worn a badge.
I also think if there had been a jury, and I had been on it, I could certainly understand how all the evidence might have pointed me to a not-guilty verdict. With the limited info I have though... yeah, cop done shot the guy, because he decided the guy needed killing.

Even though I wonder if he understood what he was saying, he had a very good point. Our law enforcement system doesn't really exist to impose true "justice" - that would be impossible. Our system exists to create enough of an impression of justice so that the general public doesn't feel that their only viable option is to band together and begin taking violent revenge for offenses against them. This is what happens in countries where law enforcement breaks down and become hopelessly corrupt, and it's never pretty.
Old time Sicily is a good case study of how a system like that usually works out.

When someone decides to start a physical fight with a cop instead of peaceably submitting to a legitimate arrest, they bear some responsibility if things then go sideways during and after said fight.
The jury in the Slager case saw the damning video you're talking about, saw it a bunch of times, and asked to have it replayed.
But then after considering that in the context of all of the other evidence and testimony, the jurors were not able to agree to convict on Murder One.

So, an illegal immigrant with children comes to the US and is committing a crime by their very presence. It is unethical to punish or deport them.
A US citizen with children commits a non-violent crime, is put in jail, and their children are put in foster care. They are punished, their family is split up and it's accepted as ethical.
Why is it OK to punish a tax payer and a citizen, and break up their home, but it is NOT OK to punish someone who is not a tax payer and a citizen?

Some states do have laws outlining a right to resist an unlawful arrest. Problem is, from a practical perspective, that an asshole cop arresting you unlawfully isn't going to think twice about smashing your face in for exercising that right.

If you go back just a little more than 100 years in this country, the average person would have seen a Sheriff or a Deputy once in a great while, unless they had done something seriously wrong. But it was relatively easy and common to live your life while having little to no contact with any law enforcement types.
This morning, on a 10 minute drive, I noted 3 police cars. That's normal for any 10 minute drive I take, and I live in a pretty peaceful town.
