Fontana portrait.jpg

Portrait of Antonietta Gonzalez
Lavinia Fontana

Yesterday's lovely portrait was so warmly received that I thought I might stick to the theme.

Antonietta's father and two sisters also had hypertrichosis; too bad this wasn't a family portrait.

31 Shit, willowed:

Okay, taking a look at the Senate midterms, simply on gross numbers:

There are 33 Senate seats up for grabs, 25 from the Dem column and 8 from the Rs.

Just in cold numbers, the Dems would have to take 28 out of 33 to take majority. They'd have to hold every one they already have and take 40% of the field from the Rs.

Just on that numerical basis, there's little chance of the Rs losing majority this time, though they're doing their best to make it happen.

That's not handicapping any of the individual races, and there are likely losers on both sides. But the Dems have a big hill to climb this time around.

Plan accordingly.

94 Okay, aside from the rather bizarre girl (and I feel bad for her; there's a cute little girl under the hair), Fontana is an exquisite artist. The highly detailed and realistic art, which is impressive by itself, serves to focus attention on the subjects' faces and figures. This portrait is different in that it is darker than many of hers. Check out her paintings on Wiki: bright but not garish, rich colors (she must have had good paying patrons to afford some of those paints), and the models are correctly proportioned.

I know there will be plenty of humorous comments on the thread, but I think it's remarkable that Fontana could let the viewer see the human beneath the bizarre. It takes a few moments but it happens. I wouldn't want this on my wall but I'm glad to learn about this artist.

141 And yes, there's a code for that. But be careful of the coding distinction between hypertrichosis and hirsutism

ICD 10 Code L68 - Hypertrichosis

"A disorder characterized by hair density or length beyond the accepted limits of normal in a particular body region, for a particular age or race. This concept does not include hirsutism which is an androgen-dependent excess hair growth in women and children."

ICD 10 Code L68.0 - Hirsutism

"A condition observed in women and children when there is excess coarse body hair of an adult male distribution pattern, such as facial and chest areas."

----------
An acrochordon (plural acrochorda; also skin tag,[1] skin polyp, fibroepithelial polyp,[2] fibrovascular papilloma, soft fibroma, fibroma molle) is a small benign tumor that forms primarily in areas where the skin forms creases, such as the neck, armpit, and groin. They may also occur on the face, usually on the eyelids. Perianal skin tags can be associated with Crohn's disease. Acrochorda are generally harmless and painless, and usually do not grow or change over time.[citation needed] Though tags up to a half-inch long have been seen,[3] they are typically the size of a grain of rice.

341 Another Fun Fact: The father of Antonietta Gonzalez was Pedro Gonzales, or in latin, Petrus Gonsalves.

Petrus Gonsalvus was the man about whose life the original "Beauty and the Beast" story was written. He didn't have a magical castle, but he was taken in as a ward by King Henry II of France, who was fascinated with him and educated him, so he did indeed grow up in a castle.

He amazed people because in spite of his hairy face, he turned out to be quite a genius, and loved debating philosophy and other intellectual topics of the day. Ended marrying a princess and having a large family, including Antonietta here.

364 IrishEi, about diverticulosis & diverticulitis - do the docs have you on a high fiber diet?

It turns out that actually makes it worse.

A lot of people with digestive issues like that get better on zero carb mainly because meat is almost completely liquid after it leaves the stomach. This allows the intestines to heal instead of being constantly irritated by bulky matter.

You can try - just eat meat for say two weeks (no plants) to get free from pain. (Although a trial of a month would be better).

hugs.

The flaw in that theory is that for over a decade, they've been counting on China to boost their sales and tailoring their movies to make the Chinese government happy. And I think you actually have a point about the high fiber. Just before this episode, I had made a batch of granola bars which I was eating constantly---they were that good. 486 482 Everything's better with more exposition!

We need more scenes with people talking about nothing at all, and staring into space with a blank expression for extended periods of time so that you can write your own feelings and meaning on to the scene because that's like, super deep, man. Then something absolutely absurd and meaningless observed by the main character who has a totally blank expression, then moves on as if nothing happened because it expresses ennui and the meaninglessness of life! FIVE STARS, Palm d'or!

489 Newt was on F&F this morning, and was asked about Trump's couch meeting with Pelosi and Schumer, Ryan and McConnell.

He said it was good strategy, as it cleared the decks to begin serious work on Tax Cuts(laughed and said, no reform will happen) and it got money to Harvey victims which was promised. He said that it also opened the door for cover for the rogue Democrat now to vote for something Trump wants, because they can point to the Dem leadership saying that they were happy to work with Trump on this particular bill, etc.

Right on cue, while Newt was talking, Trump tweeted that unless the Senate R leader removes the 60 vote filibuster rule, 8 Democrats are ruling the Senate and therefore, must have their votes to get anything done.
And he's correct.

It's supposed to be the flagship product on their CBS All Access app.

I think it's going to fail.

Not because the show will be terrible (which I'm fully predicting), but because Star Trek really isn't that popular anymore. The reboot movies started out popular because they were Star Wars-lite, but got less and less popular with every installment.

Throwing $100 million at a new Star Trek series was stupid.

Star Trek was never something big. Even its best movies are comparatively small.

516 I don't think Trump is "moderating" - he is Trumping.

He signalled where he was on the Dreamers just after the election. He said he would end DACA - which was a Presidential EO created program. He announced that he is doing so with a transition period.

While announcing the end of DACA, he is encouraging Congress to "solve" it - to legislate what US policy should be, and he has indicated that he would sign such legislation up to and including if it is just the DREAM act again.

Upholding law is upholding law.

On the relief and CR and debt ceiling deal, he got relief for Harvey victims which was going to happen, but he got it without a political fight. He kept the Republicans from kicking the can - if they did an 18 month CR, how do the do tax relief? Make the Congress do a budget like they said they would.

And the debt ceiling is stupid, it doesn't work, and Dems win the fight each time.

Finally I go to Kurt Schlichter who I am finding more and more to be completel on the nose: What exactly was the GOPe's plan for victory on the CR?

532 Once the spending/borrowing is approved (months before the ceiling is reached), the debt ceiling must be raised, and that's why it's meaningless.

Abolish it. The only way to slow spending/borrowing is through congressional action. The debt ceiling is a red herring. You could even cut spending radically and you will still hit the debt ceiling.

To not break the ceiling would require cutting government spending by over 50% in one year and that's not happening!

Not to mention the little fact that studies show 10-15% of people who are registered to vote, do not.

So if you suddenly have MORE voters than were even registered... of 1 million plus voters...

You really need to lop off another 10%... at least... so they are over 100,000 votes above where statistics say they should be... for just that ONE city.
