I think the psychopaths and black coffee thing was a half-assed extrapolation of some half-assed "scientific" study which purported to show that psychopaths liked bitter flavors more than average folks.

For instance, I like bitter flavors in a cocktail but am not a fan of black coffee. Milk or cream, please.

Still, I haven't killed anyone.

Yet.

Perhaps, i'm not living up to my full potential.

Hmmm.

19 Went to the State Fair last night.

It was a cool evening, and nice for just walking hand in hand and looking at all the traditional agricultural and 4-H stuff as well.
Sa a little girl, maybe 5 years old leading a 1,000 pound cow around from the milking display back to her stall. Perfectly confident in doing it.

Looked at all the needlepoint, and food preservation, with some really great looking home made pickled vegetables.

Turned to Mrs VIA and told her, when the shit hits the fan, these are the people who are gonna survive.

However, if and when you have the desire/opportunity for a trip to St. Augustine, do it.

Well you have to make a chart; on the left side have a column for 'proves' and the other side 'disproves'. Each study you put a check mark in the appropriate column.

Add the totals and compare. Then take the paper, ball it up, stamp it under your feet and set it ablaze. After the ashes cool carefully sift through them. The answer is probably there.

Mrs. Hate and I went to the Geauga County Fair yesterday because it was the day when codgers like us get in free. LOTS of Trump supporters there. Unusually cool weather announcing that summer is in the rear view mirror. Everything you used to describe your experience held true in Burton, Ahia.

53 VIA,
I Thought so. This might cause you to smile.

When I reported aboard the sub, M-Div was run by a Master Chief. As it was under going an overhaul our living and work spaces was one of those floating barracks. Early one morning a new ensign walks into our space and tells the Master Chief to do something. I know longer remember what, but it doesn't matter. Waiting to see what was going to happen to the ensign, the MC puts a hand on his shoulder and leads him away from us so we can't hear him. Afterword we asked, but he never told us what he said, but the look on the ensign's face was like he'd had a pineapple rammed up his rear.

He was always really good to me I think because I made a really good first impression by reporting aboard December 24 instead of calling for a leave extension. When I met him that morning he asked me why, and I told him because my orders said report Dec 24. It being a Friday he said 'Get outta here. Report for quarters on Monday.' I learned a lot from his leadership style that served me well during my few navy years and later in my civ career.

56 Good morning, fellow Morons and 'ettes.

Qdpsteve and Tami mentioned minds.com in the ONT, and her wiki info is correct. Bill O is John O's son, and is a great kid. Mrs O (Bill's mom, John's wife) is a friend of 47 years now; she broke up with me when she met John in college 41 years ago, and given they've been together since, I'd say she made a wise choice. Bill has big plans for minds, and I wouldn't be surprised if he gets there. I know he loved my #blackLabsmatter logo caps so he's got his head on right.

Alberta Oil Peon, I'd be interested in those PIAA lamps if they're still available. If they are (or if anyone wants a #blackLabsmatter ball cap), find me at blackLabsmatterstore at that gee mail thing. Thanks, y'all.

Moi aussi. I've even trained myself to buy them two at a time, when possible, esp since that's the flavor the store usually runs out of first.

Happy tip: Target sells the grande size, and recently they cut the price to 2.77 -- which is less than the 3.19 the regular size goes for at the other grocery stores in my area.

I used to combine it with the Mexican Chocolate one -- outstanding! -- so of course the braintrust at Nestles discontinued it.

Also a historically segregationist, racist, Native-American-culture-appropriating, redneck-serving tool of white privilege?

97 "Your right, going to a county fair (or state fair) renews your faith is America. "

One of the most attended areas was simply a cow and her calf.

Calf had just been born right there less than three hours earlier.
Blood and parts still dripping down from the cow's lady parts.
Calf all wobbly, but nursing hard as the mother cleans and licks it.

And the children from the city were absolutely amazed, and overjoyed watching the beginning of the circle of life, right in front of them.

That particular State Fair is one of the touchstones that helps me to realize just how great this country and all it's citizens are.

With al the shit going on, I really needed that.

170 Christian Science Monitor has an article that was linked by Instapundit. It's called "Are We Asking Too Much of Houston's Good Samaritans?" I admit to not reading the whole thing, but I really hate angsty stuff like that.

No one is asking anything of the Good Samaritans beyond what they *want* to do to help. It can be dangerous, apparently a couple volunteers contacted a downed power line, but the people out in their boats are there because they *want* to be. The guy sorting clothes at a shelter instead of attending his son's six-year birthday party is there, in the final calculation, because he *wants* to be and prioritized it (rightly or wrongly is something he will have to work out for himself) as greater than the party.

There are people who *aren't* being asked if they want to miss important stuff like birthday parties and clearing their own homes and those are the people who are employed. Like the grocery store workers who had massive overtime last week preparing for the storm and this week again as people buy cleaning supplies and restock spoiled food and the Home Depot employee who only said her own home was going unfixed when directly asked.

I want to clarify that my problem isn't with the volunteers *at all* but with the article that I see as trying to make the volunteers victims when the only way recovery will happen is if people *don't* see themselves as victims.

178 Speaking of Fort Meade, I used to go to this place all the time when growing up in Laurel:

Henkel's Restaurant, a landmark in Annapolis Junction, Maryland, for decades, closed its doors in early November of 1997. Right by the tracks of the B&O Washington Branch line, and across from the gravel plant, Henkel's was a favorite lunch spot for railfans and normal people alike. A major clientele was the lunchtime crowd from nearby Fort Meade. It was known to CSX engineers, truck drivers, and railfans across the country. However, business had been in a decline, and the decision was made by the owners to close up shop. Another homey, friendly eatery bites the dust!

Henkel's Restaurant did not advertise, and you would not accidentally trip across it. If you learned about Henkel's, you were told about its massive sandwiches by someone who had already been there. While you were eating inside, there was no question about when the train passed. Trains rocked the old wooden building for a century.

Milton Henkel had founded the restaurant in the 1930's as a gas station/pool hall/notary/grocery store/beer store and hangout. Back then, beer was 10 cents, the sandwiches were 35 cents. The restaurant was most recently owned by the Duggan family.

Although Annapolis Junction, just south of Route 32 on Brock Bridge Road, is best known for Henkel's Restaurant, it is also the site of Wimpey Minerals, recently renamed "Tarmac." That site receives a rock train from quarries near York, Pennsylvania, several times a week, usually with two 6-axle CSX units. The facility has a blue, ex-Conrail U23B. There was also an old Alco parked in front of Henkel's that belonged to a previous owner of the stone works. It was scrapped in place recently, a profoundly distressing process to watch. Tarmac receives dry bulk gondolas of cement. Just south of the facility is a lumberyard with a rail siding as well. Adjacent is the MARC Savage commuter rail station. On the line between Baltimore and Washington, the tracks see a constant stream of heavy haul, including autoracks for the ramp in Jessup just to the north, the Emerald Express trash train from the transfer facility, and the multi-weekly Tropicana cars.

Annapolis Junction got its name from the location where the Annapolis & Elk Ridge Railroad branched off the B&O eastward through Fort Meade, to the Chesapeake Bay.

The restaurant was burned to the ground in a training exercise for firemen on Wednesday, April 14, 1999. The structure consisted of old, dry wood, and went up like a torch. All that remains now are some radiators, and, surprisingly, the doorframe

The cop's actions just reinforces the image of unaccountable jack-booted thugs in police uniforms.

ObamaCare
Amtrak (BIRM on public trans)

Student loans
The Post Office
Union pension bailouts
Public unions, period
Ethanol mandate

Treatment for uninsured gunshot victims
Universities

After I've had my covfefe, I'm sure I can think of some more. But congrats, Sure The Troll, you're on your way to a smaller gubmint mindset and eventually, a Trump supporter.

260 that's a huge Chinese ship ... wow.

China is fully capitalist and believes in the 'free market', with a few qualifiers. The help out the invisible hand in invisible ways, but that is how raw "free trade" actually works. They also treat their people as "human capital", almost on the same level as any physical depreciating asset.

And control of their capitalist system is mostly centralized, and the ability of their people to buy our goods is severely limited, and they steal our technology. But as Ron Bloom said, that is how it really works, even in America where people go to DC to make sure the government is on their side.

The quaint notion that communists will magically turn capitalist if we just reward them with enough trade surplus for enough decades has been a ruse. The globalists have extracted American value to their global banks and special untouchable billionaires the whole time. Trump indicates a sea change in public awareness, but storms are ahead.

Why does everyone say that? Assuming the question is serious, and I realize it might be rhetorical but am apparently humor challenged at the moment, milk bread and eggs are perishable staples that can be used separately or together in many ways. Bread doesn't need refrigeration and eggs can also withstand a couple days without and are a good source of protein. Even so, they are more perishable than most staples and can't be purchased far ahead which leaves them as the final items needed if one may not be able to shop for a while.

296 ", if subsidies be bad, let's make a list, eh?" GnuBreed

The federal government SHOULD be limited to the powers specifically granted in the constitution. And indeed things like an extra $20B on top of real need for any natural disaster has become the 23rd third rail of politics.

The "global free trade" ideal is a myth because all other nations are mercantilist, as we were for most of our history. We set up these international ruling bodies, but that is what allowed HSBC (and other frauds) to get away with money laundering $2B in cartel drug money ... no jail for anyone.

We dominate militarily (mostly) but at great expense. We have a real obligation to defend not just via weapons, but by maintaining a food supply, energy supply, and so forth. There will always be incentives, grants, things that can actually contribute to national "defense" on a federal level.

(but yeah, that is where the politician collects money by abusing those powers ... funding from billionaires for favors, or votes from "minorities for free stuff).

Still, as China shows, there is power in groups acting together, and a purely "decentralized" system has weaknesses, and waste (as conglomerates like Wal-Mart demonstrate). So we're not in 19th century Kansas anymore ... the west was won, but paradise was lost. We will need a lot of government intervention to make middle America survive after all the foreign and domestic "conglomerates" have been raping her for decades.

Reversing the PC mentality injected into the last two generations and replacing it with some 4-H, Boy Scout type self reliance would be a start.

301 Third day in a row my lower back hurts like knives. Thought it was getting better yesterday; could hardly stand up this morning.

Cat crying awakened me at 4:30am. Opened the door to let her in and instead she ran under the car. In the pre-dawn drizzle. That one may never be allowed back in.

I've spent a couple of years recovering from health stuff, and a year fighting broken and dying computers; I noticed several days ago that all my hundreds of products were gone from CafePress; when I asked, they told me if there's no activity for a year, they wipe you out. Well, screw their overpriced, penny-profit company; they're so 1990s anyway!

Those are just a few of the trivial problems. They take my mind off the big ones. Like: WTF happened to the EMT today? Is NOTHING reliable in this life?

Oh yeah:

Good morning.

May God be with you in all things.

...While most in the mountainside town of Regent were sleeping when the mudslide hit, Power of Praise Ministry was holding an all-night prayer vigil. Pastor David S. Dumbuya, his wife, and his children died. One survivor told the Daily Telegraph that he lost 13 of his relatives who attended the event.

"Everybody died. It covered the whole church...."

326 I joked about it for most of my life, but yoga made a world of difference in my lower back problems. Just go to the library and check some DVDs out, make notes on the poses, and stick with it for a couple of months.

I do mine twice a week (Tuesday and Thursday). It also helps balance and flexibility, both problems once you start getting old.

Good luck.

329 >>>Fun Fact: Egg shelf life is greatly extended by oiling the outer shell.

Does that mean that bacteria are able to permeate the shells? In that case if we could genetically modify chickens to have thicker shells that were impermeable, the shelf life of an egg could be indefinite, like a tin can.

330 You can make eggs last at least another month by microwaving the entire dozen for a minute and a half.

It can be done in the carton for ease of use, too.

335 In that case if we could genetically modify chickens to have thicker shells that were impermeable, the shelf life of an egg could be indefinite, like a tin can.

They have a film at laying that prevents bacterial growth called the egg bloom, but it gets washed off. You can keep fresh eggs on the counter for a couple of weeks if you don't wash them.

Big-ass cases of eggs. All marked "Suitable for ocean shipment. No refrigeration required"

control of their capitalist system is mostly centralized
Isn't this oxymoronic? Or was that your point?

Posted by: Grump928

ha, yeah, my point, sorta.

the invisible hand operates in a system of laws, rules, taxes ... and it only marginally works in real life in America, the most free most fair in the world (let's assume for now ) So we try to control the environment (at great expense) in order to allow the magic of "capitalism" to work. But controlling the environment has its own expenses, its own fragilities, and massive corruption that taints it all.

So "capitalism" is a useful concept to consider in minimizing regulation, but it is under an umbrella of the nation state. So to try to put China in the same world as "free market" capitalism by ignoring their slavery, pollution, cheating, theft ... is just bogus.

But most think, on a "pure" idea that they sell for less, that is "capitalism". And purely considering price as the invisible hand, I guess it is true. But all the other things are "externalities" that cannot be ignored (but are ignored).

In the end, it probably does come to the barrel of the gun, or the nuke on the rocket.

The America First thing may find allies in the Dem leaning academic world. The "free trade" thing was never really an academic thing except for a few years of Reagan where deficit spending took root. I like these guys.

380 347,

I think more in terms of free enterprise than capitalism but that is more a semantic quibble.

Government is what sets the rules, is the last resort to enforce them, and then determines the playing field for enterprise. They can make it work better or impose costs that make it work worse.

If government works to make enterprise better then the external/hidden costs are made internal to each enterprise and thus no longer hidden. Getting costs externalized and hidden by government is what fuels corruption. Eventually those costs bring down the entire system unless it can find a larger external system to pass them onto.

Earth being a finite place eventually there is nothing external to throw the costs into.

Posted by: Grump928

to answer more directly ... it is not oxymoronic, in that "capitalism" is not the same as a government system. It operates within a nation state which can control it in many ways.

In a communist ideal system, government controls how resources (capital) are directed, in effect using humans as their capital. In federalism, capital is controlled closer to the individual, though still under federal and state law. And the individual by law cannot be used as actual capital (slavery).

So if capitalism is only producing goods at a lower price, then all those laws are thrown out when we cross borders. It comes down to believing in American ideals of liberty having value worth defending.

The blurb mentioned that LA has much less social capital among its residents which I thought was interesting. It's not just that the population is very transient because, at least in my subdivision, that is the case here as well and I believe that is the case for much of the Houston area.

The banksters that bribed government to bail them out for a trillion, and set policy, fought wars, to protect trillions more ... they now insist on escaping US law, and in time want global law run by unelected bureaucrats.

LTCM leveraged 300:1 and their scam failed, then they got bailed out because millionaires owned our government. Those same coastal elites now dictate to us deplorables that we own none of this country, they will set policy, and it will be run by globalists.

The EU cabal was the forerunner, in a sense, as they now intend to defeat the commoners via third world invasion, but Poland, Czech Republic, etc say no. The Western World is at stake ... Democrats and the Uniparty are against us.

This is why it bugs me when people speak glowingly of "global free trade" as some panacea. That is in the cards, but it occurs under a new world order, with people like Soros in charge, and average Joes will be their servants.

Americanism seems to be the last hope, but Mueller/Rosenstein/Ryan/Soros et al are determined to undermine the election.
