The photo of the people in the nursing home was taken by the owner of the nursing home. She had tried calling local cops and 911 for help, but she could not get through to anyone in her area, so she sent the pic to her daughter in FL, asking her to try and contact someone to send help to the nursing home before the people there drowned.
The daughter and her husband in FL both tried calling local TX authorities, but they also could not get through to anyone. So the daughter decided to Tweet the photo and the nursing home address, on the chance that someone in TX might see it and be able to send help to the nursing home. The pic went viral, and the TX authorities saw it and sent a helicopter to the nursing home and picked up all the residents, transferring many of them to a hospital.
Reportedly, all the people who lived in the flooded nursing home are now safe.

When they do the roads in germany, they have a different formula than they do here. So their roads don't fall apart.
In Michigan, we spend 10 months of our the year every year repairing crap roads rather than doing them right in the first place.
So really, preparing for something that *might* happen when they can't even do something they need to do the correct way seems a stretch.

Also, Dickinson is a fairly small, and poor, town over 30 miles south of Houston. The drainage bayou there cut the I-45 freeway so whatever emergency services exist there were probably tied up with that. Air traffic was non-existent last night as well, probably due to wind, so rescue efforts were slowed by that as well.

coworkers. The problem is every storm is different; a giant cat 5 can
effectively fizzle out and cause little damage - a simple tropical storm
can flood the whole city and cause billions in property damage.
Evacuation also raises the problem of "Which way do you go?" If you take
the wrong evacuation route you can wind up going right into the mouth
of the storm and drowning in your car. Staying at home here is a viable
option despite what non Houstonians think.

Not sure where the zone is at this point. We're about 30 miles south of Houston but north of Dickinson. Last night was sort of scary and if it starts raining hard again we may be in trouble. It has only been raining lightly and intermittently for a while though, so hopefully the entire neighborhood has had a chance to drain.

I have a couple bigger ones. Mine is black and decker because my car is big and I like the "use the power outlet" option where I don't have to break a nail opening the hood (which I can do fine, I just don't LIKE to). Bought my kids some other brand for Christmas and precharged them, since they're stupid. They use them all the time (I remind them to recharge them, since, well, they're stupid). It'll jump my car or run what ever I want for hours.

The photo of the people in the nursing home was taken by the owner
of the nursing home. She had tried calling local cops and 911 for help,
but she could not get through to anyone in her area, so she sent the pic
to her daughter in FL, asking her to try and contact someone to send
help to the nursing home before the people there drowned.
The daughter and her husband in FL both tried calling local TX
authorities, but they also could not get through to anyone. So the
daughter decided to Tweet the photo and the nursing home address, on the
chance that someone in TX might see it and be able to send help to the
nursing home. The pic went viral, and the TX authorities saw it and sent
a helicopter to the nursing home and picked up all the residents,
transferring many of them to a hospital.
Reportedly, all the people who lived in the flooded nursing home are now safe.

The DOJ hasn't done anything on behalf of actual civil rights for a long time. Yeah yeah lots on their plate - but is DOJ gonna get around to defending constitutional rights any time soon? If they need help, they oughta sing out. Yes, we still have power, and honestly that makes a huge difference. Our neighborhood got off with only moderate flooding in limited areas, but many in town have it much worse and many towns are worse off still. It does make me a little glad I hadn't been able to sign the lease for the shop yet though. Will have to see how the shopping center it's in was affected.

I moved last year after two ridiculous floods from the place you are seeing all those horrific videos right next to Buffalo Bayou. I moved to Houston in 1980 and all was good until 1983 or 85 I forget, before being somewhat scarred by Hurricane Alicia. Ike was even more traumatic. People died during Ike and most of Houston got pummelled albeited briefly but enough to make you wonder. Last year I moved to a place in Colorado where we rejoice when the snow falls hard. I got out of SE Texas before losing my ass to mother nature who, btw, is a mfer along the Gulf Coast. For every 1,000 days of a bliss, 5 days or horror. Minimum. Guaranteed.

Thank you for asking. We have power and the well and the kennel isn't under immediate threat. The kennel dogs spend the day shut inside with the AC. Since most of the outdoor runs are flooded, we run them out to the dry ones three times a day.
The three house girls have an ex-pen outside the porch door for their use. Everyone is dry, well-fed and happy.

Battery is bad. One of the water cells appears to have a leak. Filled and fully charged it still only clicks. May have to get it towed and don't want to do that while towing companies are busy with flood damaged cars.

I wanted to give a shout out to HEB (a big Texas grocery store chain) and their employees. They knew people were going to need survival supplies. My colleague spoke to an HEB store manager last Thursday - he said that 17 trucks of supplies were arriving Friday to their store right before the storm. Many of the stores are open even now during the storm. They didn't defer to the government, they decided to take action before the storm to help knowing that lot's of people were going to be in trouble. Kudos to HEB!

We had a Midwestern blizzard going on in our little town and lost power. Hubby and I would have just hunkered down and toughed it out but we had to little boys and no lights, heat or water. Hubby's folks in a nearby city told us to come over for the duration but we needed to get two blocks to the nearest semi- clear road that my FIL could get to with a four wheel drive with chains.
We set out with me carrying the baby and hubby the three year old. He had me walk behind him so he could break a trail through snow that was waist deep to him. It was snowing so hard you could hardly breathe. I honestly thought I would not make it and by the time we got to the end he was basically breaking a path and carrying all three of us. It was only two blocks. But man the snow was deep.
I told him later I thought that we were all going to die and he just laughed. He didn't think it was all that bad.
I've been praying all day for everyone affected by this storm. God bless you and keep you all.

The Navy used to have serious infrastructure to support seaplanes in Naval Base Norfolk and San Diego. We don't have that any more.
All that debris in the water would make a landing lane a dicy proposition. CH-53Es and SH-60s are the way to go these days. Faster cycle time, hovering, and better maintenance hours / flight hours ratio.
Seaplanes would cover more ground and are more romantic, but Houston is not yet an archipelago in the South Pacific.

They are sufficiently small in number that each one has been christened with its own unique monicker. I was lucky enough to get a close look at "Incredible Hulk" just after its return from a maintenance interval where the entire airframe had been meticulously gone through.
The whole huge apparatus (all the mechanicals are exposed to view on a Skycrane) just gleamed like a hand-built car-show hot rod. Those wrench spinners know what they're doing, and care about it too.

The Coasties in NorCal fly the Aerospatiale Dauphin. Slim, sexy, and small. I always figured that would be a problem in a mass water rescue event like the levees around Sackamanura letting go, or a dam collapse.
Just not enough room in the cabin for rescues in such a comparatively undersized helo. They should have the more capacious SH-60 instead. (Which some USCG detachments do: I noted a wire service photo of one at work down in Texas.)

Couldn't answer that, as I've not been since '08.
Cool thing though. They do the whole restoration in the public hangar, with the project separated by only a single "movie theater" style velvet rope barrier. Every bench, workstation and workstand is right up front for you to see.
Even the engine stand and work areas.
Now that they're in the new facility at Ellington, I'll make a visit, and will note the side-window treatment for sure.

But Lordy, are they ever fast, all-weather and tight in the hover. Jaw dropping to see them at work.
That said, we need some Jolly Greens for some of the big rescue lifts being done up in Houston, right now. Stuff it with fifty or so at a time, cycle 'em off and go out for the next round of recuses.
And yes, there's that many needing airlift up there.
Houston still needs a massive prayerlift.

Son #1 also had a specialist appt in the Medical Center on Monday, which is already canceled, which is fine bc it's not urgent but also annoying because it's testing results we have been waiting for for almost a year, and Son #2 has one on Wednesday. I hope we can go to that one...it is urgent.

When my son finished Tech School in northern Texas (?Sheppard AFB maybe) he was on his way to DFW airport with two other young airmen for their very first trip home in months. Damn car they had broke down about a hundred miles from the airport. Got towed to some small town but everything was closed. A woman overheard them on the phone trying to locate a car service and asked them where they needed to go. She brought them back to her trailer for some lemonade and since she didn't drive, arranged for her brother to pick them up and take them all the way to the airport. All three made their flights (with just minutes to spare for one of them!)
Everything really is bigger in Texas---especially their hearts!
