I desperately want to meet a girl, but haven't a clue how to do that. Sadly, I have close to zero experience with the opposite sex. Never been on a date. Never been kissed. To boot, I'm a bit socially isolated; the past year work has me working remotely. The 18 monts I've been on eHarmony, but that has gotten me nowhere. I've "smiled" at close to 200 women, but only a few have reciprocated (I'm pretty sure the majority of accounts on there are old and unused). There have been a handful of women who contacted me, but only one of them I've found to be cute. (Would I be wasting my time and money on another service?) Anyways.. that's it for now. Just wondering if anybody has some simple, easy tips for breaking through the "no-experience" barrier. ??? Posted by: Serious Cat at August 26, 2017 10:34 PM (Hnqc1) 91
Dumbest inventions story is dumb. Yeah, some of them are silly, but some, if they worked as intended, served a useful purpose. The Laryngaphone, if it worked, and canceled noise as advertised, would surely be useful in some environments. Didn't Allied fliers use throat mikes with some radio setups?
And the motorized surfboard. Isn't there something like that on the market now? Looks like a fun toy, and fun toys are big money-makers. And the curved-barrel machine gun would be very useful for urban warfare. Some jihadis holed up in a brick building? Sneak up along the face of the building, poke the muzzle of the SMG into a window or doorway, and sweep the room from cover. In fact, I think the Israelis build one. Fast-draw robot? A training aide for cowboy-action shooters? One assumes the robot shoots blanks. The illuminated tires? Not so much stupid as just a style statement, although they would help make the car visible at night, so could be said to enhance safety. And the rocket belt, (Bell jet pack?) does work, within its limitations. Got used in a James Bond movie, it did. And the shower-hood model has nice elbows, so there's that. Posted by: Basement Cat at August 26, 2017 10:32 PM (3C9q2) I understand that but if you look at the ad the only thing she's washing is the cap. The water isn't touching anything but the cap and it's falling off missing her back. Her body is totally dry. If you wore that cap so that you don't get anything above your neck wet then there would be no reason to point the shower head at your head. ??? Okay Serious Cat...
listen, I think it's incredibly sweet. But, I have limited experience myself so...I can only speak from my perspective that no, it wouldn't weird me out at all. But, I cannot speak for all women. Honestly, the best way to get experience is just...to do it. I am not telling you to go out and bang random women. But...if you find someone, even someone you might not find attractive to kiss....do it. Even if you aren't totally sold on a woman...go on that date. Very few people have their first dates and first kisses and first others in the context of a meaningful life-long relationship. On the other foot, to give you hope....I met a guy online about 8-10 years ago. He was in his 30s and had also never kissed a girl, and I offered to be his guinea pig. Kissing is fun. It wasn't romantic at all, but it was fun. Well, like a month later, I found out the guy had met a girl and had consummated said relationship. So...all it took was getting over that one hump I think. I had a night last night. Me sainted mother, again. Friday afternoon, she got nauseated and started throwing up, then out the other end. I thought it might've been something she ate, or maybe diverticulitis, which has flared up with her before. But around 10PM, she said her mouth was really dry. In the elderly, they can dehydrate fast, so I took her to the ER. She didn't want to drink much, so that just clinched it, of course. Well, long story short, it turned out to be a kidney infection. And her BUN and creatine was getting to the danger point, so she was indeed getting dehydrated. They put about a good bit of fluid in her via IV. I got her out at about 3AM. I was hungry, and the only thing open was a Waffle House. Went in there to get a take out. And I'll tell you, at 3AM on a Friday night, there can be a rough crowd at the Waffle House. So I managed to secure a free Saturday (sans work, child-chauffeuring, pool cleaning, yard work, etc) and decided to do a bit of reading. I was thumbing through CS Lewis Mere Christianity when I came across this gem that just seems to fit the current national kerfuffle perfectly. Thought I would share.
"He [The Devil] always sends errors into the world in pairs - pairs of opposites. And he always encourages us to spend a lot of time thinking which is the worse. You see why, of course? He relies on your extra dislike of the one error to draw you gradually into the opposite one. But do not let us be fooled. We have to keep our eyes on the goal and go straight through between both errors. We have no other concern than that with either of them." Anyways.. that's it for now. Just wondering if anybody has some simple, easy tips for breaking through the "no-experience" barrier. ???
Try going to bars/taverns for Happy Hour. People will stop off there for a drink after leaving work. Sit at the bar. If some girl sits near you, try making a comment. Occasionally that will lead to a long conversation. Then you can ask for her phone number or email. Be prepared for rejection. Look at it this way. If you saw 10 women in a room and talked to them, you wouldn't click with most of them. So if you ask a woman for her number and she says no, try not to take it personally. Serious Cat, it can be so daunting to try to meet people, but try something different than what you are now.
Try networking groups, professional organizations, church or study groups, hiking or other hobby groups, charity events or fundraisers. Just get out there. Ask friends or family if they know someone. Please don't give up. My parents met in a church singles class, my cousin met her husband on Match, a friend met hers in the grocery store because he started a conversation, another couple met playing basketball, another cousin met her husband playing community softball. Good luck and hang in there. Lots of girls are looking for a great guy and they are as frustrated as you are. Posted by: Just wondering at August 26, 2017 11:14 PM (WBYpW) 223

Thanks Eric, she'll be fine looks like. They gave her shot of morphine through the IV as well, and it was sort of funny. She soon said "I'll feel funny, [publius]." And then she got to slurring a little bit. And then said she felt a lot better. You know how when someone gets a bit tipsy, there diction and word choice can get a bit odd, plus slight slurring of a word. Funny. Oh, and then my father. When I got my mother back home, I was greeted with an odd sight. There dear old Dad was, lying on the couch in the den, in his boxers, but with a shirt on. Sound asleep, snoring. When we left him, he was in bed in his pajamas. So, I was wondering. Something odd must have happened. Well, in an Ambien induced stupor, he thought the phone rang. And it hadn't. Caller ID showed nothing. So he assumed it was something bad with her, and they were going to admit her, so he needed to get up to the hospital. He was trying to put his clothes on and drive to the hospital. Luckily, he didn't make it and just passed out again on the couch. I shudder to think what would've happened if he managed to get in a vehicle and get started. He's all right most of the time, but that Ambien can space him out. That may not be a joke. Those Thai sex vacations have all sorts of pre-booked scenarios -- all the standard Round-Eye fantasies in standard packages. Real girls or ladyboys. Or both. I was reading something a few years ago, by some bankster, who was going to Thailand for the "tourism". But he hadn't made it to the big time, so couldn't afford the high-end "vacations", so he was hitting the bars. He told of how he got innocently picked up by some ladyboy. Totally not his fault, he wasn't interested in that at all. Uh huh. Now, it was some "gal" who got off on "turning" young Yankee boys. She got off on the look of shock and shame once they realized what they'd done... Posted by: publius, the Persistent Poperin Pear at August 26, 2017 11:22 PM (8O3HH) 260

One of our dogs was adopted from a shelter which was the old women' shelter; they built a new women's shelter and gave the old one to the pets to be. The thing was built like Fort Knox. All concrete construction, bullet proof windows, man-trap entrance. No one getting in or out without proper authorization. Posted by: yankeefifth at August 26, 2017 11:24 PM (0wem/) 265

(Would I be wasting my time and money on another service?)
Anyways.. that's it for now. Just wondering if anybody has some simple, easy tips for breaking through the "no-experience" barrier. ??? Posted by: Serious Cat at August 26, 2017 10:34 PM (Hnqc1) Find social activities that you can enjoy that put you in contact with women. I found that swing dancing works well if you're looking for a twenty to early thirties crowd. Learn to make small talk. Art of Manliness has a good tutorial on this. Be direct, but polite. "I'd love to buy you a cup of coffee." "Are you free on Saturday for lunch?" As others have pointed out, working out helps you look and feel better. In addition, consider improving your wardrobe. Dressing well, being well groomed, all of that helps attract attention, and gives off the message that you have your shit together. Remember that it's a numbers game. Ask, ask, ask. Try going to bars/taverns for Happy Hour. People will stop off there for a drink after leaving work. Sit at the bar. If some girl sits near you, try making a comment. Occasionally that will lead to a long conversation. Then you can ask for her phone number or email.
A word of caution as a long-time bartender on meeting women/men in a bar. If you do not normally enjoy going to bars, I would not really go this route. First off, you will obviously reek of desperation if you are in scoping the crowd rather than enjoying your drink. Secondly, supposing you do meet a woman and do not particularly care for the bar scene, it will become tedious for you to continue to go to the bar with this woman once you begin dating. I've watched many a relationship go sideways when the new beau suddenly decides he doesn't want his girl going to a bar or vice versa. You really have no right to expect someone to stop going out when that is where you find them. I'm a bigger fan of meeting someone doing whatever it is you enjoy doing. If that's outdoor activities, join a hiking group and meet someone there. If it's coffee, hang at the coffee shop. If you like drinking, a bar is appropriate. Just a thought anyway. But it can be hard going to social events all alone. For example, there was a big event today for people in "Baltimore Social", an after work sports league I got the involved in from my coworking place. I didn't know anyone from my team going and was afraid of going alone and looking like some asshole standing around by myself with no one to talk to
You're in Ballmer? Are any of the coworkers on your team Orioles fans? Maybe they'd be interested in going to a home game as a group, and baseball games draw fans from all age groups. Also, since you said earlier that you went to college, does your school have a local alumni club? I've known people who got into dating through their local college alumni association. Posted by: X-ray at August 26, 2017 11:59 PM (ZKWca) Having worked in the trade, and now doing it only for myself, and select friends, I have to say the latter is way better. Biggest downer about being a mechanic? Most of your customers resent you. They resent the fact they need you, and many of them are sure you are going to screw them. It's soul-sucking, it is. Today I laid some rust paint on the frame of a utility trailer I'm rehabbing for a friend, and then I worked on a golf cart I got in a horse-trade. Got reverse working, but it takes a major effort to throw the lever between forward and reverse. Also cleaned its little carbatooter, and ran the throttle cable direct to the throttle lever, bypassing the governor on the transaxle. It now runs really sweet, and can go both slower, and faster than it did before. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at August 27, 2017 12:20 AM (2le8w) 398

There are worse things than being alone. Like marriage. Posted by: Insomniac at August 26, 2017 11:58 PM --- I'd amend that to "a bad marriage" or a "bad relationship." However, I'd also say that a lot depends on your attitude. I have a female co-worker who is a few years older than I am (aka "not young. At all.") Both of us have never been married. She is actively looking for a guy, and, to be honest, has mood swings and is incredibly temperamental. She is angry that she has never been married, and does not see how her behaviors could change things. In a lot of ways, I'm the opposite. I don't mind being alone, and would rather be alone than be in a bad relationship. I'm not angry that I don't have someone, since it's probably my lack of effort that has caused that situation. So... two people in the same situation. One is angry and alienates men while trying to fix it. The other is not angry, however, isn't trying to fix the situation. Not sure if there's a moral here. /OMG, I think I'm rambling... Posted by: shibumi at August 27, 2017 12:27 AM (aT+Bx) 415

Ch. 13 Houston, reporting fatality, drowned in vehicle, due to sudden, over-car-roof flooding in West Houston neighborhood. Not an underpass, merely a street lined by houses built on highly elevated lots.
In other words, the street was a canyon. Prayers for 'em as the storm storms. No flooding on Galveston streets right now, but a rain band is coming, so we'll see. Got way up the driveway and close to the garage, 'bout noontime, here. But by 3 pm, neighbor and I were outside enjoying beers n' cigars, watching the water recede till the street was dry. Ah, hell. Cel just blew up with local flash flood warning. Anyway. Comcast puked out, from 1:45 pm till about 10:00 pm tonight. Cynical story of the day:
I have a very liberal co-worker at the crappy part time job who is 43. Girlfriend who he lives with seems like a SJW. He works part time, and, including unemployment, is probably making a bit above the poverty level for a single person. He's been with the girlfriend for a long time, and , over the years, I've encouraged him to get married. He's no prize (liberal beta male) and is not ambitious. If this girl loves him, he should hang on for dear life. He has ALWAYS said he doesn't want to get married, she doesn't want to, and their non-commitment commitment is perfect for him. He DEFINITELY NEVER wanted to get married. Well, longtime part time job is over at the end of September. Limited work days (maybe six) until then. Earlier this week, I found out that the co-worker proposed to the longtime girlfriend, and she said yes. It took me a week to realize now that he's out of a job, he needs someone to permanently support him, since he's eventually run out of unemployment. So... voila! A marriage proposal means a lifetime meal ticket. Yes, I am that cynical. Posted by: shibumi at August 27, 2017 12:43 AM (aT+Bx) 460

Porn of one form or another has been around a long time. After the Civil War, there was sort of an explosion of dirty novels that were popular amongst soldiers. Sort of Penthouse Forum stuff. The backlash against that led to the infamous "Comstock Laws". These things go in cycles. Licentiousness followed by prudery. The '20s were pretty wild, for example. age are, bitter about something., at least this is what I found. --- I suspect that bitterness comes from: 1. Being liberal/ feminist 2. Not being particularly religious 3. Family pressures I think liberal/feminist women are prone to bitterness, and that not having a trust in God's impacts them in a negative way. Also... if your family has Expections for you that you do not meet, that can be problem too. If all your siblings are married and you're not, that could be difficult. And if your parents want you to be married and hound you about it, that might make things hard as well. Then there's the "OMG, I thnk I want a baby and it's past my time" feelings that might factor in as well. I'm lucky. My parent's had very minimal expectations (don't come home pregnant/become an addict/go to jail) so that made it easy for me. Plus I'm an only child. I can also accept that God has a plan I don't understand. Posted by: shibumi at August 27, 2017 01:00 AM (aT+Bx) Posted by: In Vino Veritits at August 27, 2017 01:00 AM (qul7b) 518

>> The early movies were more scandalous, and if memory serves, that's what caused the formation of a commission to rate movies...I can't remember the name.
------------------ Yes. THe Motion Picture Production Code. It was "voluntary". Now, believe it or not, the Supreme Court back sometime had ruled that the First Amendment did NOT apply to motion pictures. So states and the feds were free to censor. THe pre-code movies caused a backlash. Some of them survive -- I remember one with Barbara Stanwyck. Several states, including NY, had instituted censorship boards, and so Hollywood did it voluntarily with the Code to pre-empt that going national. The Supreme Court overturned that decision decisively in the '50s. The Code kept up for a while, but it was gone by the '70s. ...perfectionism and disregard for authority come into play. Personal relationships, particularly romantic ones, can be the INTJ's Achilles heel ... A bit more:
By nature INTJs can be demanding in their expectations, and approach relationships in a rational manner. As a result, INTJs may not always respond to a spontaneous infatuation but wait for a mate who better fits their set criteria. They tend to be stable, reliable, and dedicated. Harmony in relationships and home life tends to be extremely important to them. They generally withhold strong emotion and do not like to waste time with what they consider irrational social rituals. shibumi and insomniac-what is INTJ and what makes both of you undateable? Probably a bunch if horseshit I bet.
--- Introverted Intuitive Thinking Judging (judging is more about being organized and work before play.) Myers Briggs Personality Type. My list of qualifications includes: -don't mind being alone - too independent for most men -too self sufficient for most men -really good at "logical arguments" which is really annoying, especially when the expected response is "cry." -appears "smart" Many apologies for that last one. I read a lot and have a good vocabulary, so I think there's times I really come across as an intellectual bitch. What's strange is that I work with a lot of people who are not educated at all, and I have no issues with them. However, if I'm working with someone who is a "supervisor" type who is insecure about his intelligence, he'll know right away that I know he's not smart, without me saying anything. So.. unconscious intellectual bitch? IDK. Posted by: shibumi at August 27, 2017 01:53 AM (aT+Bx) 597

Yes, get out of this trap of thinking: You plot everything out (or try to) like a chess game, and you see all the bad outcomes,so you never start the game. You don't see all the possible good outcomes, 'cause your brain is only interested in the bad ones. You see only risks, no rewards. They may assume that there is a right way for a relationship to end and look for that. They act on the outside as if nothing has happened to them when indeed much has. They may lash out with criticisms of their former loved ones. It may take them a while to recover." BTW...I tend to think that really stupid people are happier. So really, smart is not an advantage. @596 shibumi-
-I don't mind being alone, I'm not a lonely person. I may be alone but I'm not lonely. -too independent for most men to me means when I'm off doing my thing, she has something to do and is not solely dependent on me being around to be "happy". -too self sufficient, see above -really good at logical arguments to me means able to resolve conflict between each other -appears smart means I won't want to stab my ears out with salad forks when we go out to dinner because she's a dunce. I don't see the problem, just a strong woman. Posted by: JROD at August 27, 2017 02:07 AM (TqxwF) 627
Thing about those personality types?
They're changeable, over time. People develop, change, evolve. Seen it too many times to doubt it. The most apparent changes? True deep, heartfelt, born again religious conversions, with accompanying long-term study of scripture. And the #2 most radical change. Ex-smokers. Even more than confirmed AA quitters. This isn't science, merely my observation. I suspect that U.S. Military Boot Camp would effect similar changes, with the USMC being the most pronounced for effect. Followed closely by a year or so of lurking, followed by a year or so of commenting, at the AoS ONT. But, you already knew that, right? long to and will make people disappear in the middle of the night. 2) If the Left does not have to tolerate the existence of anybody who disagrees with them, then those who disagree with them do not have to tolerate the existence of Leftists. Those appear to be the new rules. We did not make them. But just as long as everyone follows the same rules, matters will reach a new equilibrium. It may not be the equilibrium the Left wants, but it will be equilibrium. --- Actually, I'd agree with it all. Be careful what you wish for Leftists... I've told my eHarmony story before.
I met this one woman and we were communicating back and forth, and everything seemed to be going well. We exchanged photos, and that wasn't a deal breaker for either of us. Then I said something about "moving back into my parents' house" and she abruptly cut off contact. Seems I neglected to mention that my parents had died and left me the house free and clear. How I long for the start of the NFL season, and a game bread here, because the place where I've been listing has been overrun with pro-Kaepernick, anti-anthem snatchboxes.
One poster said the anthem had lost all meaning. I said, Please phrase that as, "In my opinion", because it's still very meaningful to me. She was rude back, I mocked her rudeness, guess who got deleted? Eh. When the anti-anthem posts get 20 "likes", and mine = 0, I guess I was asking for it. Still. Snatchboxes. My biggest complaint about eHarmony is that they appear to be artificially boosting their match count by keeping around gobs of abandoned accounts. When you smile/ping dozens of girls one night and only a couple actually open your profile to who you are back, you know something's up. It's a shame, because I think leads people to looking past each other and longing for matches that aren't even available.

So, these categorical labels for the Myers-Briggs stuff seem all whacked. Outside of "Extroversion" and "introversion" - which don't seem appropriate since people seem to really call the categories "Extroverted" and "Introverted" - the rest of them all follow a simple pattern, except for the dreaded "Intuitive". All of the other categories are labeled by present participles - Sensing, Thinking, Feeling, Judging, Perceiving. But then there's "Intuitive". Why is this form different? "Intuit" is a verb that has been in use since the 18th century, at least, and there's no reason not to use "Intuiting". Further, if one didn't like that (and the whole "I" dilemma) then one could have pulled out a thesaurus and found a different word.

They've managed to dilute sports, one of the best things civilization has to offer, with their misery & finger-pointing. I feel like they found my treehouse. And pulled the ladder up so I couldn't get in. Posted by: Shopgirl at August 27, 2017 03:41 AM (s5v9v) 759

Eventually Big Time Sports will realize that they are not necessary. They are a luxury. A distraction. Something to pass the time. When they cease to be that, they can be jettisoned and replaced. Not sure they'll figure it out in time.

Blue Streak is still there and in use. The park has gone bankrupt but it struggles on. The rides are running only on weekends now. They have a waterpark thats open all week though. The beach is still there and open. Even the hotel is still in use. Didn't see the Wild Mouse. I loved the bumper cars and the Ultimate Trip. The arcade room was heaven! I went there at least once every summer in the 70s and 80s.
