Trump's Speech on Afghanistan at 9pm

He'll be calling for additional troops, as the genius McMasters advised him.

"Swampy!," remarks Mollie Hemingway, which is sure to spur a torrent of abuse from her stalkers/husband's bosses at the Weekly Standard.

106 These failed adventures all have something in common.

Afghanistan is surrounded by other nations (is itself a collection of nations) and when one empire invades it, all that empire's enemies have to do is give support to the rebels.

Ibn Abi Bakra had various para-Hindu princes dotted around his army. The British had to deal with the Persians and the Russians. The Russians had, well, Charlie Wilson (D).

And now America has to deal with Iran AND China AND Putin, AND the Pakis.

116 I'm perfectly fine with 4,000 more troops there, just so long as they're combat aviators, artillery, first rate infantry and armor.

The entire JAG cadre needs to be shipped back stateside, pronto.

Supply and logistics REMFs are brothers at arms, and very necessary to the effort.

H.R. departments wearing camo have no place in-theater. Go back to having a Company Paymaster, and leave the rest of the SJW back office to wither at Ft. Wherever, ND.

Our military, if stuck in Afghanistan, needs to have all the Taliban types shitting themselves in fear at just the mere thought of encountering an American solider.

The Afghan civilian though, needs to be in awe of those fantastic Americans, for every good reason that Americans are known for.

But not because of "Meals on Wheels" programs.

But because American Soldiers are Just and Merciful, to those deserving of it.

And American Soldiers, Marines, Airmen and Sailors, are the baddest assest futhermuckers on the planet, and are not to be fvcked with by any herd of goat molesting carpet sniffers.

Seek, find and destroy the enemy. No mercy, no quarter, no escape.

Could be done in months, not years. IF ONLY we had the national will, and stomach to do so.

That is all. Carry on.

Posted by: boulder terlit hobo at August 21, 2017 09:12 PM (6FqZa)

This is an incorrect and fallacious take on recent history.

It was not President Bush who flew the "Mission Accomplished" banner, nor was that banner in any way a part of the Presidential visit (via arrested landing), aboard the carrier U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln.

The banner was produced and flown by the Ship's Company, denoting HER "Mission Accomplished", after an extraordinarily long deployment in-theatre.

But of course, the press used the camera angles to conflate the two things, and then proceeded to endlessly beat that misconception into the American conscious, until myth became "fact" to so very many.

It's the Press. It's what they do.

And they must be destroyed as an institution, asap.

Jake reenlisted because he loves the Army and is now an NCO serving somewhere in Eastern Europe (Poland, I think, but he can't tell me outright.) I like it that he spends his free time with Polish and Romanian girls, with no bad guys shooting at him, but that won't last. At some point his unit will draw the card and be sent there, I know it.

Nothing in Afghanistan, that godforsaken rathole, is worth my son's life. Nothing. I have yet to see or hear anything from a representative of the Afghani people that says they even want us there. So let's not be there. If it's what they want, let them live unmolested in barbarism and savagery until the end of fucking time.

228 I have to disagree with the idea that we can have allies without changing ideologies. The reason we're in Afghanistan stems from the ideology and governance of that place prior to 9/11. A large part of the reason that we're still there is because we have too many islamophiles in the State Department and the Intel Community who are hostile to western beliefs and who wanted to preserve the same primitivism that created these problems in the first place. If we'd been more aggressive about promoting western ideals, we'd be in a better position.

I still think that we should have adopted all the Afghan war orphans, sealed off a couple of valleys, and spent ten years training up a generation with a western education and western military training.

I alluded to that last night. In a country with a government like ours, wars have to be short, sharp, and decisive. Otherwise the government changes hands through elections, and the incoming party wants to repudiate the policies of its predecessor and do something different. Thus the mission loses focus.

I think this is practically inevitable.

Hold Pakistan accountable for their cooperation with terror, with the primary lever for accountability being a new alliance with India. I've been wondering why the FUCK we haven't already done this since I was in high school.

Greater crackdown on finances and travel in terror-riddle countries. Lean on European countries to increase military expenditure with a possible benefit of increased vigilance at home.

Did you watch the speech?

I'm just guessing here, but it may be something of the nature of "Fuck up the bad guys until they're either all dead or not willing to be bad guys any more."

At least that's what I'm hoping the new strategy is.

Exactly.

I really don't get the thinking behind just leaving. The last time Afghanistan was left alone to sink into gang rule it didn't work out so well for us.

Son is dealing with a lot of personal shit, is busy with the start of his last year of college, serving as president of SVA (student veterans' group), and a college service organization. He's lost another friend to suicide. My husband and I worry, because this is the third friend he served with he's lost. His mental state isn't the best, and I'm sick for him.

Our new African student is fine, but needs waaaay more attention than previous students. Poor kid has never traveled from his own country. So we (I am) are busy.

There hasn't been a strategy for victory in Afghanistan for millenia. That's history. It's a pit into which blood is poured and nothing but more blood comes out.

We made a serious strategic error after 9/11 in not simply leveling the place with wave after wave of B-52's carpet-bombing the entire fucking country for a month or so, and then saying "don't ever even think about fucking with us again--OR HARBORING THOSE WHO HAVE DONE SO, or it'll be nukes next time."

372 Historically, the strategy for dealing with Afghanistan is to stay the hell out of Afghanistan.

There's no question that in the end there will have to be a negotiated settlement between Kabul and the Islamists that gives the Islamists a more conservative society in the Pashtun areas. Think of the Islamist political party as the Democrats and the Taliban as the KKK in the Reconstruction South. What it basically took to keep the peace was 100 years of letting the Democrats run the South one step removed from slavery. That will be the outcome in Afghanistan. But before the Afghans can get to that, the Taliban have to be convinced that their cause is militarily futile and there is no point in fighting to get what they want. That is achievable, but it means we and the Afghan government have to take off the gloves and kill a bunch of them. There will be some innocent lives lost and property destroyed. Sherman's March to he Sea was not pleasant.

Way back in the day, when I joined the Air Force, you took an oath when you signed up for delayed entry, and took it again when you processed out for basic. Once you took the oath the first time, you were covered by the UCMJ. I knew a few people who were denied enlistment because they violated some article of it that they didn't think applied to them.

Just as the "surge" and the recent roll-up of ISIS showed, the main things are in fact pretty simple. Force, killing, imposing your will. Acceptable end-conditions vary by circumstance. A'stan likely will require a pretty flexible definition of acceptable - but he and others know that.

Of course it is, but Iraq a lot more so than Afghanistan. The average soldier, in his deployment to Afghanistan over the last 5 years or so, never saw a shot fired in anger. May have heard a car bombing in the distance. For the most part, life is mundane and boring, spent on secure bases as a trainer for Afghan troops.

Make some phone calls, and speak to a CID investigator. You can go see them in person if distance allows, OR send your whole package of printouts by FedEx or other overnight carrier with tracking number and delivery verification.

CID will absolutely make Hope Solo's asshole look virginal, in comparison to the cavity search they'll do to what passes for a "brain" with this particular specimen.

By the way, CID stands for "Criminal Investigative Division".

I think you've hit the nail on the head. I know from personal experience talking with our boy and his buddies who were gung ho to deploy (they volunteered for deployment) how disheartened and angry they were afterward. Seeing friends die and maimed and being told to stand down killed their spirits.

War is horror and pain and blood and death and we pay billions every year and send the best of our young to learn to do it.

They are not sent to "nation building" Basic. Or "peace corps" camp.

There has to be a massive sense of dislocation when they are told to carry unloaded weapons and other such political bullshit.

The only bit of PTSD I have, is NOT from actual combat...

Its from having to pick up dead bodies, of Men I knew, from the Marine Barracks in Lebanon in 83...

Why? Horror, without the chance of either revenge, or victory.

I'll bet a lot of Viet Vets feel the same.... where the fought and did horrible crap, but then their victory was GIVEN away by politicians...

To kill al Qaeda and remove the Taliban government that housed and protected them. During my deployment in 2011-12 to Helmand Province, we killed a metric shit ton of Taliban, but far too many were allowed to live because of ROE and establishing Positive ID (PID). We could have killed hundreds more and if we had been allowed to direct fires across the borders, we could have killed hundreds more.

480 Thanks folks, for "seconding" my advise.

Here's why you don't take that to recruiter.

They're on a very strict and demanding "quota" system, for "sales" (new recruits)

Those recruits MUST get through not only Basic Training, but at least a certain number of months on Active Duty, to "count" for the recruiter's quota.

Recruiter will basically stop at nothing to get anyone who can fog a mirror, past the tests and clear the background check, signed up, into the system and out of basic and secondary training.

Bad things go into a Recruiter's Service Record if they fail in their tasks.

Most Recruiters really won't knowingly sign up a criminal or outright mental defective.

But that girl with some "odd" political views they knew nothing about? Yeah, they'll be pushing her through, with every fiber in their being.

Go to CID, or if USAF, to OSI. Navy is NIS, which does for Marines, too.

But NO WAY to a Recruiter. And I mean this with no disrespect to Recruiters. My late Dad had to serve a hitch as one in his career as a USN Submariner.

No easy task. Either of those jobs.

I was trying to walk between the bomb racks to get to the back part of plane, and then work my way forward to see what it was like. There was a stinking little 4 inch wide beam to walk on in between the bomb racks. It was frigging spooky to think about. Moving around inside that sucker was a nightmare.

On the Banks of the Wabash, Far Away Lyrics
Written by Paul Dresser
Composed by Paul Dresser

'Round my Indiana homesteads wave the cornfields,
In the distance loom the woodlands clear and cool.
Oftentimes my thoughts revert to scenes of childhood,
Where I first received my lessons, nature's school.
But one thing there is missing in the picture,
Without her face it seems so incomplete.
I long to see my mother in the doorway,
As she stood there years ago, her boy to greet.

[CHORUS]

Oh, the moonlight's fair tonight along the Wabash,
From the fields there comes the breath of newmown hay.
Through the sycamores the candle lights are gleaming,
On the banks of the Wabash, far away.

Many years have passed since I strolled by the river,
Arm in arm, with sweetheart Mary by my side,
It was there I tried to tell her that I loved her,
It was there I begged of her to be my bride.
Long years have passed since I strolled thro' there churchyard.
She's sleeping there, my angel, Mary dear,
I loved her, but she thought I didn't mean it,
Still I'd give my future were she only here.

How the hell did they just line up and face a slaughterhouse, the belief in God had something to do with it. 544 The only reason, after we toppled Saddam, I thought we should be in Afghanistan and Iraq was for them to have some kind of stable government so we could have bases there. Those two nations surround Iran, our main enemy, and have borders with other places that support terrorists, Pakistan and Syria etc..

This has not changed, indeed our enemies have gotten worse while we screwed around nation building under Bush and arming terrorists from the looted armories of a dictator, under Obama, we had under control but Obama/Hillary/Rice/Power decided to topple in order to get those arms to/for the bad guys.

We need bases, larger in Iraq where we can support them by sea and smaller in Afghanistan where they will have to likely be supported by air and so Spec-ops ones. Both their governments can be anything as long as they don't support our enemies and are fairly stable.
