It's good to be alive on my 57th birthday. My children are all people of strong character, none of whom voted for the Pantsuit-clad lying harpie. My 6-month grandson is the cutest and I get to see him at least once a week thanks to FaceTime. I live in NW Florida on Choctawhatchee Bay and I love it.
I passed my most recent flight physical with flying colors last month. Last week, I passed the 17,000 flight hour milestone, which equates to nearly 1.94 years in the air. Good Lord willing, I intend to make it to 20,000 (will take about three years or a little longer) and hang it up then. Take stock of all the good in your life and dwell on that. It's easy to get consumed by the negative, such as those lying GOPe congresscritters, but remember in the end, all that matters is your relationship with your family, friends and your Creator. Interesting imagery. It definitely has a feel of pre-Christianity. The entrances to the tombs on the cliffs have an ancient, almost Stonehenge look and there is nothing to suggest an afterlife. That suggests Viking tradition (it wasn't all Valhalla) or even Homeric attitudes. Given the time it was painted, I wonder if it reflects the public interest in Wagner's Ring Cycle operas and similar pagan themes. Also, the Victorian era showed a preoccupation with death and death rituals, at least among the British.

But Paraguay has one of the most interesting
histories of the Latin American republics. One of the smallest countries on the continent decides to conquer the two largest most advanced. It did not end well. Posted by: josephistan at July 31, 2017 09:39 AM (7HtZB) Paraguay was the most stable and technologically advanced country in South America at the time, having ironworks, and a period of stability under president/dictator Francia that Argentina and Uruguay had spent in revolution and fighting each other. Solano Lopez was perhaps not the best war time or diplomatic leader, and the conflict may not have been avoidable, but the idea that Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay would combine to fight Paraguay was almost unimaginable with their history. He also managed to mobilize his country to fight nearly to the last man. However, once Paraguay got independence and convinced the cliques in Buenos Aires it was better to keep fighting the Uruguayans, not a lot happened there. So not as fun as the rise and collapse of Gran Colombia or the Pacific war Posted by: Kindltot at July 31, 2017 09:56 AM (mkDpn) 119
And that was confusing. Post liberation from Spain, Paraguay was a very industrious backwater.

Technically, Bocklin made effective use of perspective and color. Everything is towering and huge against the bright but tiny figures of the men and boat. I like the way he captured the weathering and stains of age on the cliffs and the dried plant life. The dark blue of the water suggests extreme depth, furthering the sense of distance from life and isolation. There is nothing of comfort or consolation about the painting but it successfully portrays Brocklin's theme. It is not pleasant but it is interesting.

Bolivia was where Che got his just deserts. When captured he supposedly said, "Don't shoot, I'm worth more alive than dead!" They quickly ordered him shot dead. Supposedly, we wanted him alive and sent to Panama so's we could interrogate him further. Klaus Barbie is rumored to have helped find Che. After the war, we helped him escape to Bolivia. They were afraid he knew too much about our spies in the commie blocks and refused to hand over to the French, who were infiltrated with commies. A helpful place to look to start understanding things like the Deep State or what is often referred to around here as the Uniparty is the Council on Foreign Relations. If you look at the roster of members, both past and present including not just politicians but members of the banking world and virtually all of the mainstream media, you will get a pretty good idea why people act the way they do. And yes, McCain is a longtime member of the CFR as are the Clintons and so many others. Obama was also blessed by the CFR which probably explains why McCain was so quick to defend him. As it turned out a large number of Obama's cabinet members were CFR members. That's where the allegiance is established and that is the agenda they follow. >>Weird that Peru had a large Japanese immigration period. Also Brazil.
Same reason there were so many pockets of German, Italian and other immigrants flocking into South America, opportunity they couldn't find at home. And they were welcomed with open arms. Brazil didn't get rid of slavery until the mid-1800's and after they did there was an enormous vacuum of workers. Somebody had to work those plantations and work in the mines. German and Italian immigration to the "southern cone" of Argentina and Chile, and to Brazil, was substantial and most of it in the 19th century. Largely for development of agriculture, as has been noted. Argentina received the largest number of Italians - "Italians who speak Spanish, and think they are British" has been the humorous summation of Argentine attitudes for a long time.
I heard German being spoken, and not just by older people, in southern Brazil in the 1980s. I recall BBQs in southern Brazil where my fledgling Portuguese was less useful than my buried/fading German (including for Chileans who were also guests there). I think Portuguese only became the official national language of instruction in Brazil in 1942 - after the Allies had "rented" Brazil for WWII, via goodies for the then-strongman Getulio Vargas. Like the most South American strongmen at the time, he was neutral/pro-Axis, though mostly not for any ideological reasons. It was a bit awkward to have large swaths of Brazil where the three languages of the Axis - German, Italian, and Japanese - were taught in public schools. (I think, characteristically, the huge Japanese community in Sao Paolo already taught Portuguese along with Japanese) Posted by: rhomboid at July 31, 2017 11:19 AM (QDnY+) 307

Along with the key anti-U-boat base at Natal in the northeast (an area of unbelievable tropical beauty, and still not widely known), Brazil provided a few divisions of infantry for the Allies. They served in the Italian campaign (one imagines scenes of fairly close relatives encountering each other, or young soldiers visiting their family's Italian home-towns, as with American GIs).

The two most dominant institutions in the development of South America were the Catholic Church and the military. A lot of that influence remains today. Not too surprising when you realize the groundworks was laid by the Portuguese, the Spanish and the Catholic Church under the Treaty of Tordesillas. Also explains whey Brazil is the only Portuguese speaking country in South America. Posted by: JackStraw at July 31, 2017 11:28 AM (/tuJf) 327

Trump tweet:
"If ObamaCare is hurting people, & it is, why shouldn't it hurt the insurance companies & why should Congress not be paying what public pays?" IIRC, Congresscritters exempted themselves and their staff from lots of OCare by declaring each individual office to be a "small business." (Which should have been a scandal at the time). If so, HHS Price should be able to undo this easily. Posted by: Ignoramus at July 31, 2017 11:30 AM (+7/1f) 332

I believe there are still identifiable descendants of Americans who fled to Brazil from the South after the War of Northern Aggression/Late Unpleasantness/Civil War/War between the States/19th Century Burning Times.
But the more interesting losers who were there, probably all gone now, were the crew of the German pocket battleship Graf Spee, surrounded by the Brits and trapped in (neutral) Montevideo. Ship was scuttled off shore, crew was "interned" per Geneva, but of course most made their way across the river to Buenos Aires. There was a German restaurant in B.A., on Calle Lavalle, called "ABC". I ate there in 1985. Idiotically, I never followed up and did any interviews or stories on the proprietors/staff, most of them old guys who won the German WWII lottery: instead of dying in a Katyusha barrage on the eastern front, or being ground under by Patton's advance, they passed the war in a quiet, prosperous, beautiful place bypassed by "history".
