And Here We Go Again: "Thor," Who Was Turned Into a Woman in the Comic Books and Saw Sales Plummet, Now Says James Bond Should Be a Woman Too

Marvel Comics has replaced almost every single marquee character with a more "diverse" one: Thor is now Natalie Portman (Jane Porter). Captain America is now a Nazi/Hydra undercover operative, so the mantle of Captain America is worn by Sam Wilson, formerly called The Falcon. The Hulk has been replaced by the long-standing character She-Hulk -- though she's now just the Hulk -- and also by a young Chinese-American Millennial called Amadeus Cho, often called "Amadeus Bro" because of his Millennial/Radical, Dude! sort of persona.

His book isn't called "The Incredible Hulk." His book is called "The Totally Awesome Hulk." Because Radical, Dude!

Ironman is now "Ironheart" -- Tony Stark is missing in action, and a 15 year old black girl is now Ironman.

Even Wolverine isn't Wolverine any more -- Wolverine is now that girl from the Logan movie, called, formerly, X-23, but now officially "Wolverine." (An old version of Logan from a different timeline is also present in the universe, but he's called Old Man Logan, not Wolverine.)

How are the sales doing?

Dumpster fire, baby.

Marvel Comics aren’t doing well. Sales have declined, even as Marvel has pushed out every major event and crossover it can over the past two years. In a recent interview during the Marvel Retailer Summit, Marvel VP of Sales David Gabriel decided to ignore all the problems and criticism in order to place the blame on diversity.

What we heard was that people didn’t want any more diversity. They didn’t want female characters out there. That’s what we heard, whether we believe that or not. I don’t know that that’s really true, but that’s what we saw in sales. We saw the sales of any character that was diverse, any character that was new, our female characters, anything that was not a core Marvel character, people were turning their nose up against. That was difficult for us because we had a lot of fresh, new, exciting ideas that we were trying to get out and nothing new really worked.

Has it occurred to any of these people that Tony Stark is more than just the suit? Like, Batman is more than just the costume; people respond to the character of Bruce Wayne, too. You can't just take a completely different character -- and one the audience hasn't spent decades following -- and put him in the same costume or give her the same name and say "This is your new Batman."

I guess Chris Hemsworth doesn't know the gender switch was tried for the character he plays on screen -- Thor changed into "Thor, The Female Version" -- and the numbers cratered.

Because now he's calling for the same thing for James Bond.

Chris Hemsworth is best known for his role as the Norse god Thor in the “Avengers” movies. But outside of cinema, Hemsworth has had a hard time fitting in with the progressive left, who have slammed him for violating every progressive tenet, ranging from cultural appropriation to transphobia.

Unable to stop making politically incorrect gaffes, Hemsworth has now taken it upon himself to call for a woman to play the role of the next James Bond.

In an interview with W Magazine about the new film “Atomic Blonde,” the actor revealed that he would like to see Charlize Theron take on the role.

If Charlize Theron is already playing a super-spy clearly modeled as a female version of James Bond -- why does she actually need to play "James Bond" as well?

It's as if they're admitting from the start that they have no faith in a real female character. It has to be a knockoff gender-swapped female character who just cannibalizes the existing fan base of the male original.

This is so stupid -- "James Bond" isn't a unique individual. He's a 00 agent -- and there are more of them. If you wanted a "female James Bond," you could just run a movie in the same universe as the James Bond franchise, and just make her -- get this! -- a completely distinct, original character that is a female 00 operative.

Say, aren't Shared Universes the big thing anyway?

You wouldn't even have to make her a British agent. You could say the CIA has its own 00-type program and she's an American. To make her different than the James Bond character. What an idea.

Then you could make money by following the Avengers model of a crossover/team-up. Why, they could even start on opposite sides of the adventure and have a fight before realizing they're actually working against the same enemy, albeit from two different angles.

But no, we should all follow the Lady Ghostbusters and Marvel failed models of just gender-swapping established heroes and hope it'll work out better this time.

Can we have any female characters who aren't fundamentally parasitic free-riders on the goodwill and legacy of male characters?

I guess not. I guess we're all done with making new characters or any kind of new movies, period.

Frankly, I want the media destroyed far more than I care about another dismal James Bond movie so I hope they actually take Hemsworth's advice and just set their IP on fire, forever.

8 For the same reason minorities clamor to see one of their "own" have the spotlight, maybe the typical comic reader also would prefer to have a character they could relate to as well.

And what demographic overwhelmingly consumes comic books? Its not black, trangender handicapped millennials.

I guess this sentiment of representation is only something those in protected classes get to feel. Anyone outside that is clearly part of the KKK.

9 Yeah, if they want more diverse characters, they could create new characters. But they want it both ways, to have the brand identity and to have the pats on the back for being enlightened and progressive.

From the previous thread, where I said I would post this whenever anyone couldn't tell a girl from a boy.

Applies to this nonsense.

Thor is a god from ancient mythology. He is not a gender bender, and there are/were plenty of other gods who were female. No need to make anyone a girl who isn't, and vice versa.

So, DaFuk.

79 The Operative from No One Lives Forever is well-regarded.

She's kind of an Emma Peel type. (Mmmm, Emma Peel...)

The point is to kill the culture, tho'. So "Jane Bond" it shall be. Or perhaps "James Bond" because who says a gal can't be named James. In fact, who says the gal James Bond needs to, you know, have a vagina? Let's get a burly Scottish prostate-owner to play the part, and she'll be a lesbian, and bang Ursula Andress because it's not psychopathic when women do it, it's empowering!

89 Here's a litmus test:

Ask yourself why your existing male characters sell better than your existing female characters?

Is it because the male characters always have the better/more interesting super powers, such that if you just had a female in that super suit or who could spin spider webs or whatever, they would be just as popular?

Was the entire analysis that the reason they didn't have popular girl characters is that all their fans really wanted was a character, any character, that could launch claws out of the back of his hands, and the tragedy was that when they thought of a character with that particular superpower they happened to make it a male character and dangit now there's another more popular male character.

These people have to have metrics dating to the beginning of time tracking the popularity of characters by gender.

And therefore you would have to be a complete mouth breathing idiot to not know what would happen when you switch a male character to female.

What would really melt the internet is if they took a female character, made it a male, and then sales took off. Which it very well might.

Also Stephen King signed off on a lot of cover art that showed Roland's race.

129 @TexasDan

It's a bit complicated. Most of the female titles are ACHINGLY bad in the writing.

Captain Marvel for the past 20 years has had great artists and bad artists but the writing has been between horrible to merely bad-and-preachy.

So they don't usually invest good writing in their female cast. Brian Bendis is the exception with his Jinx and Jessica Jones. He's not perfect but he can write.

Then there's the demographics. Most superhero comic are bought by boys. Girls buy...8% I think? Maybe 10% And what boys look for in comics isn't what girls want.

Basically, ideology and sloppiness is what's stopping them from being profitable and successful. Compare the Marvel movies to the Marvel comics. Hell, they had to kick the Marvel comic editorial staff out the movie planning because they kept fucking up the show. Now Feige runs the movies and he runs them well. Very little divisiveness and the diversity crap...well that still happens but less so than in the comics.

You could make a movie (or start a series) about one of them, or a new one.

Honestly, I originally thought the roles were reversed, Matthew McConaughey being from Texas and all would be almost typecasting as The Gunslinger and Idris Elba pretty much brings whatever he needs to whatever he's doing. I suspect, however, there was a "black man as Man in Black is problematic, hey let's subvert the trope!" discussion.

For A Wrinkle in Time - it was a book, so there's no explicit race, so why not?

I have an idea for a superhero: TightsMan. The world's first cross-dressing superhero. "He's got a run... for justice!"

I know, I'm weird.

190 Honestly, I originally thought the roles were reversed, Matthew McConaughey being from Texas and all would be almost typecasting as The Gunslinger and Idris Elba pretty much brings whatever he needs to whatever he's doing. I suspect, however, there was a "black man as Man in Black is problematic, hey let's subvert the trope!" discussion.

For A Wrinkle in Time - it was a book, so there's no explicit race, so why not?

I'm persona non grata in the movie thread so take this in context...but that's what irks me about discussing these things in this kind of detail. At the end of the day, a movie is a product. It works if it sells, and to sell it needs to entertain. Trying to make it into a science ruins the whole thing.

I dunno. I'm done caring about such things, I think. Hollywood is too crappy to give them reason for me to waste my remaining brain cells worrying about what they do or don't do.

249 I was wondering why Hemsworth would be taking flack from progressives when he was obviously trying so hard to fellate them:

"She embodies every ounce of strength and nobility and dignity and integrity that that character should have," he said, perhaps forgetting that as a character, James Bond embodies every bit of the "toxic masculinity" feminists complain about. He's a womanizer, and a drunk, who has on multiple occasions expressed misogynistic views toward women or treated them as little more than sexual conquests who usually end up dead.

The guy's name is Ian Miles Cheong, which reminded me of the name "Fielding Melish" from Bananas.

260 Comic book superheroes were all (nearly all) white males because that's who was interested in them.

If blacks and females were "interested but left out" they would have created their own; just like they did with sports.

I had the 12-year-old daughter of a friend of mine say, "Hey! I'm a girl and I like comic books! I read a Spider-Man comic once!"

I stared blankly for about five minutes, then said, "When I was your age, I had 3 steamer trunks filled with comic books; not one issue missing; all categorized and organized. Same with all my friends."

It's amazing how many chicks will go to comic-cons dressed in costume and acting like big fans, but they've never spent a dime on comic books.

274 Ace's liver, true.

I just find the settings and tropes that Hollywood seems to just insist *every* movie contain today, to be beyond tiresome:

I recently watched "Get Out." One of the things I liked about it, besides that for once the wealthy white liberals were portrayed as the problem, was that the lead character, Chris, was portrayed as a successful; photographer... but he certainly didn't seem like he was rolling in money.

I personally would like to see more stories about middle-class and lower-middle class people, struggling through and making it, but they don't have to always find a billion dollars in treasure or end up with 100% problem-free lives at the end.

In fact Patricia Heaton's sitcom "The Middle" is IMHO one of the best shows in this regard. The Hecks aren't rich and sometimes even struggle, but they make it through and there's no magic miracle at the end. They just love and/or muddle their way through every situation.

286 Roland was ALWAYS a Climt Eastwood archetype. Casting Elba as Roland ruins the movie because the story is no longer an old gunslinger on his last quest. Because Elba is NOT that archetype. And this is coming from someone who likes Elba.

I've watched Doctor Who since I was a kid. And now I'm done. They cast a woman not because it makes a better story but because diversity(!!!) and those Brits love their virtue signaling. And every Fing story on the casting had the word "brave" cited prominently. I'm pretty sure it will kill the Who franchise bc its core fans are nerds who, like me, grew up with the sometimes quirky sometimes grumpy but always male Doctor and have no intrest in seeing more virtue signaling in their viewing. It won't eve appeal to millennialist. My 22 year old niece, who watches Who and loves to talk about it w me is crushed.

I'm tired of it. If Marvel wasn't making shit tons of money off th movies they'd be trying less virtue signaling in their comics and more attempts to retain readers and make profit.

Yep. I've been ranting in my head for two weeks.

This silver spoon douche cannot find a reason to live because he can't ride horses anymore or something, and we should honor how noble he is for Not Settling For Less or something.

Right.

He's got more money than God so he lacks no creature comfort or diversion that money can buy, and they even demonstrate that he can, in fact, enjoy meaningfully even some of the stuff he "can't do anymore" because, turns out, with enough money you can even do that stuff too.

But no, he's got to off himself, because anyone who can't still skydive should just kill themselves.

Never mind that all of us reach the point where we can't skydive and ride horses anymore. Certainly let's not pretend there could anything meaningful in life beyond those things.

337 286 Roland was ALWAYS a Climt Eastwood archetype.

Posted by: Baboo the Ocelot at July 24, 2017 07:21 PM (xuiV/)

I think after this last Doctor, there isn't much life left anyway, so they went there because this is probably the last chance to do so. I imagine this will give them a slight uptick out of curiosity but that's about it. The ratings this year were abysmal (0.05 share) despite a noticeable improvement in the stories compared to the previous 2 years.

They don't care anyway, everyone involved with Who can get another gig on a different or new show, and they'll have Who on their resume even if it were only to destroy it.

I stared blankly for about five minutes, then said, "When I was your age, I had 3 steamer trunks filled with comic books; not one issue missing; all categorized and organized. Same with all my friends."

423 Re "libs in Hollywood always have to fuck things up..."

True. No argument here. But sometimes, the *original* think they have to fuck up, isn't that great to begin with.

Case in Point: Pretty Woman. After it came out, there was a ton of essays written about what a giant pile of sexist horseshit it was, how unrealistic it was about prostitution in LA... it just got torn to pieces by tons of liberals and feminists.

Then another filmmaker even set out to spoof it, with a dark version of it titled "Whore."

Now, all of this was a ridiculous overreaction. But HAVING SAID THAT... the original movie Pretty Woman is also, IMHO, a giant steaming turd itself. It's just such a fairy tale, such a rose-colored Brady Bunch version of real life... I frankly doubt I could sit through it again.

So I'm not big on women who *hated* PW, but I'm not big on women who love it either. ;-)

Hope this makes sense.

428 It is NOT that the characters are diverse, it is that the characters represent intellectual theft.

The female Thor - I always wondered - why didn't they just use Sif? Isn't she just...the female version of Thor? Why get rid of Thor? He could go on a break of some type and Sif could agree to take his place. If she is popular, she could be spun off into her own comic. Happens all the time. Could be fun to compare and contrast how Sif is different from Thor. They could team up and have fun adventures.

What they are doing is saying "the Thor you know and love, that you have been following for decades, is gone now. Here is a new Thor. Fuck off." The people pushing them to make this decision don't read comic books, and those that do don't care for the change.

There have been successful female characters added. the Captain Marvels have been pretty popular. Also the young girl haweye. But in those cases the original was never killed or eliminated. They just went on to do other stuff. And someone else took up the title. Rhodey was Iron man for a while, while Iron Man worked out some personal stuff. No one cared, and sales were fine.

It is a little like the Robin thing. You don't kill Batman and replace him with Robin. You promote Robin to Nightwing (really an alternate Batman) and get a new Robin.

So, want diverse characters? Create new characters that are fun and interesting and have them interact with the old characters.

431 415 -- I don't think that's true, exactly. I see about 150 movies in the theater every year and most of them are good.

That said, I hit about half of the top 40 box office.

And I've been cheating for the past year-and-a-half because I'm taking my kids to see all the classics, of which there has been an explosion in viewing opportunities.

Nonetheless, assuming you like some of the hot trash that Hollywood shovels out, you go see that, and then restrict your viewing to the weird, to the little, to the foreign, and you'll see some very good things indeed. And even a lot of the things that aren't exactly =good= are interesting.

But the feminization of our male heroes is a commie plot ... no really, it is. They decided in the 50's on how to destroy our culture ... Orwell and "The Naked Communist" describe it in the 50's.

But even the "super power" thing is a trick. We individuals must fight without any super power. If we wait for a supernatural hero, we lose. So all this "Save us Spiderman" stuff is crap. We as mere mortals must decide to fight, even if we don't have a billion bucks or a single super power. "We" are the oneS we have been waiting for ... not Obama.

But we can/must rally around those the emerge as mortal heroes ... Trump, and I guess Kid Rock is next. ha ... well, maybe he is ... men willing to sacrifice what they worked hard to attain, for some higher purpose. God bless them.

and women on Dr Oz complain about men that continue with inappropriate sexual actions when told to stop (or fuck off)
and bad boys are still very attractive right past the point where they abuse.

in the past, men took care of those that hurt women by putting them down. this no longer occurs as it is not proper and the police and lawyers get involved.

Copyright law is kinda funny that way. Characters like Spider-Woman and Supergirl were created for the same reason.

One example where a company failed to create an opposite-sex version of a character and subsequently had that version of the name stolen right out from under them... DC had Wonder Woman, and opted not to create a Wonder Man. So, Marvel made a shitty character named Wonder Man.

482 I'm all for interesting female and minority characters, but I'm not interested in taking established white male characters and transforming them into something completely different.

Back when I was a professional comic-book geek, Milestone came out with really cool and original characters who were mostly black and/or other minorities.

Their comics were great! They had really intriguing twists on the basic superhero formula.

Their equivalent of Superman was Icon, an alien who crash-landed on Earth and took on a form similar to the first sentient creature he met. You know, to ensure he'd fit in with the local populace, as a survival mechanism. Well, it just so happened that he crashed in, like, 1800 and was first encountered by a negro slave. So, yeah, he actually had to spend a good deal of time living as a slave, himself, even though he had powers on par with Superman. He was just trying to keep his head down and wait to be rescued by his outer-space government, but he was discovered by a pregnant teenager who convinced him to become a superhero (and she became his sidekick, Rocket). Really cool concept, and really well-written story.

They also had a great team comic called Blood Syndicate. It was about a street gang who all gained superpowers in a freak incident. They started out just continuing to function as a gang, only with superpowers, but they gradually outgrew that and started to become an actual superhero team. Again, unique concept and really well-written.

They also had a teen hero named Static, who ended up getting an animated series called Static Shock. You may remember that. He was similar to Spider-Man, in that he was a young genius with superpowers and he used both of those traits to fight villains who sort of had him outclassed in terms of raw power. Unlike Spider-Man, though, Static's electrical powers were only really effective because of his scientific knowledge. If Peter Parker had been a total dumbass, he'd still be able to dodge bullets and throw a school bus.

You can absolutely make a great, original minority character. Milestone Comics proved that. You don't have to cannibalize existing characters in the name of social justice.

In fact, people like Tony Stark and Bruce Banner and Thor Odinssen. Not just for their powers, but as actual characters. Don't take away who those characters are! This is why those revisions failed; they took away the basic essence of those characters.

That black teen girl version of Iron Man? I don't know anything about her, but I'd bet dollars to donuts that she doesn't have any flaws on par with Tony Stark's, that she suffers from neither alcoholism nor a heart condition. No, I'm sure her only flaw is that she's just too beautiful for this world.

484 Jimmie, they also made Salt, starring Angelina Jolie. That was a successful movie about a female Bond-like superspy.

485 I don't disagree that the Doctor Who ratings were down this year. It's partially the quality of Moffets scripts but here's the other reason, I think. The audience surrogate, the Companion, is a black lesbian with a big Afro and a nigh indecipherable accent. How much of the population identified with her ? That's supposed to be the viewers window into the Who world and THATS your choice. No wonder ratings were down. Capaldi is great but he's had difficult writing and this last companion was just not identifiable, nor an attractive crush, for the core audience. Dumb.

And my fiancée and I saw Spider-Man Homecoming last weekend (it rained, we were bored) and she pointed out that both of Peters love interests were black. Liz, who you'd think is Liz Allen, is a blonde white chick in the comics is black in the movie (with, of course, a white dad and black mom) and end movie reveal that (apparently) Mary Jane Watson, Peters wife in the comics, and a white red head, is also black and sloppy and crude. Is it a rule that all love interests for white characters need to be black ? Black characters are fine, no problem- I like Luke Cage, Black Panther, Blade, Misty Knight etc but do we have now change every familiar character's race ? It smacks of diversity bullshit and over compensating and I'm tired of it.

486 You can absolutely make a black or female superspy within the James mythos without detracting from James Bond himself.

Bond is an agent in the 00 program. There are other 00 agents besides him! There's no reason you couldn't make a black 002 or a female 009 and have them both be seductive badasses in their own right.

Make some James Bond spinoffs featuring other 00 agents! I'm sure they'd be successful. You don't have to take away James Bond to make it work.

487 Pretty much my problem with a female Dr Who . It is not organic to the show's character. I wouldn't have a problem if the character had green complexion or black or brown.
If they wanted a female Time Lord lead show , they should have just done so without co-opting The Doctor.

488 Please God don't remake the Avengers (the real Avengers, that is). Diana Rigg was perfect; any copy will just look inferior (as Uma did).

489 Not just the Fantasy genre getting ruined by this crap; seems it's now obligatory even with "historical dramas" to have at least one or two mythical 95 pound soaking-wet super-bee-otch badasses capable of defeating 50 men in a fight without breaking a sweat or messing up their hair, all while wildly kung fu wire-dancing and swinging swords that outweigh them. And apparently Kung Fu was a thing among Vikings, Roman gladiators and every other culture. Who knew?

490 You wouldn't even have to make her a British agent. You could say the
CIA has its own 00-type program and she's an American. To make her
different than the James Bond character. What an idea."

The character of Jinx played by Halle Berry (essentially a female NSA "00") was intended to get a spin off series.

491 I though the whole push for diversity was declining sales. Folks wanting the diversity thing convinced Marvell that was the solution to their declining sales problems. Bad call. As the writer pointed out- the fan of an established character won't automatically follow a new character just because it has the same name. So, they may have gained a small number of readers but drove away existing fans. A net loss.

Imagine if Snoopy in Peanuts was changed to an Irish Wolfhound.

492 Can we just pass a law that, effective immediately, Laverne Cox has to star in every major motion picture. Check off all those boxes, baby!

493 Why, they could even start on opposite sides of the adventure and
have a fight before realizing they're actually working against the same
enemy, albeit from two different angles.

In a sense, the Bond franchise has already done this. That's pretty close to the plot of The Spy Who Loved Me. I hear that was a pretty popular movie. It's not too far off of the plot of Tomorrow Never Dies, for that matter. That movie did pretty well, too.

494 #488 - the Emma Peel years were only part of The Avengers saga. You should try to get a viewing of the first years with Honor Blackman (yepp, Bond's Goldfinger Pussy Galore) as the female lead.
Post Peel years took a different tack, went with female leads who weren't actresses first and way more comedic effects.

I still think of Steele when i saw that bowler
