Poll: Although 44% Remain Undecided, Those With a Opinion Favor Robert Ritchie -- AKA "Kid Rock" -- Over Debbie Stabenow for the 2018 Michigan Senate Race

Among those expressing an opinion, Robert Ritchie (and I'll call him that, as he would run under that name) beats Debbie Stabenow 54% to 46%. But bear in mind, 44% have no opinion or are up in the air.

I suppose this is good news, even if of a very preliminary type, but I do have to wonder:

If the public is now ready to elect newcomer celebrities, doesn't the GOP face a massive, MASSIVE Celebrity Gap?

The Democrats have their own rock stars, after all -- like, Legendary Axe-Man Joe Scarborough, the Frankenstein of the Fret-board, has issued a weak denial about whether he might run against Trump in 2020.

Not really. The public is willing to elect celebrities they think they'd like to have a beer with, not pretentious twats like Leo DiCaprio.

Hmm...if The Rock wins...

The Rock was a WWF legend. Jesse Ventura, WWF legend, became Minnesota's governor. Donald Trump, our glorious Godemperor, is a WWE Hall of Famer. Kid Rock sang the theme music for The Undertaker, another WWE Hall of Famer.

Ted Cruz, if you want to win at some point, forget the white papers and try to get on the card for Wrestlemania 34.

(NB: This route didn't work for Linda McMahon, but that's partially because she has the charisma of a damp paper towel. She also tried to downplay her WWE connection even though it's the only thing she was known for.)

Dem celebrities run as fairly conventional Dems, like Al Franken.

I don't see *Showmen* in the ranks of Dem celebrities, like we see with Trump or the former Mr. Pamela Anderson.

There's only so many seats in California and New York and most of them would want that "prestige" if they were to run. They're not going to be Al Franken running in Minnesota, or Ashley Judd considering Kentucky.

I will say this. Here's incipient Senator Ritchie's comment on policy:

"I believe if you work your butt off and pay your taxes, you should be able to easily understand and navigate the law, tax codes, health care and anything else the government puts in place that affects us all."

That this is a controversial statement is why we are where we are in politics right now.

That's the thing, this isn't some whim. Kid Rock for Congress has been around for years. He does tons of charity work, tons of stuff for the military and, in the Napster days, said go ahead and dl my stuff, I've made my money.

Will he be good? Dunno. But I've discussed before how I loathe the Ted Cruz approach (remember, I'm a Cruz fan) of straight A in elementary school to straight A in middle school to straight A in high school to high honors at an Ivy to high honors at an Ivy law school to a US attorney or state AG job to Congress to run for President. I don't blame Cruz for doing that, it's hating the game, not the player.

This is about taking a sledgehammer to the notion that you must have some kind of degree in a certain field to dare run for office.

In remarks that have no parallel since the emergence of the US national-security state after World War II, the two former leaders of the intelligence apparatus told a forum in Aspen, Colorado Friday that President Trump's loyalty to the United States was in question. They suggested that executive branch officials should refuse to carry out his orders.

The comments by former CIA Director John Brennan and former Director of National Intelligence (DNI) James Clapper came at an annual forum sponsored by the Aspen Institute that brings together the national security establishment. Present at the event were high-level representatives of the Trump administration, Congress and the media.

Exactly. If you do not want a ruling class, then you have to ensure that anyone from any path can run for office. We are in the mess we are in in good part because we have permitted ourselves to be convinced that there is only one permitted pool to have candidates come from, similar to the idea that only Harvard and Yale trained lawyers can be Supreme Court justices.

235 "People don't get it's not just the celebrity. That's just a platform. It's what's coming out of your mouth."

Exactly! That's the reason it's foolish to fret that someone will win just because they have a big name. Being a celebrity gets someone's foot through the door with most people; they recognize the name, they know they've done something, made some money, okay, they'll listen.

But it's what comes NEXT that either seals the deal, or breaks it. Sure, George Clooney can run - and if he stands up and reads scripts written for him by Nancy Pelosi, guess what, he'll flame out spectacularly. Trump didn't win because he was a celebrity; he won because he told Americans that their country could be great again, and he was going to help them make it that way.

And also, the paradigm for thinking of this is NOT "can we find someone better than Kid Rock to run?" no, it's "Can we find someone better than Debbie Stabenow to run?" And it looks like we may have. That's the only thing that counts.

Trump wasn't lazy and wasn't glib. x1000

Fuck right off right back.

If Clooney is an authoritarian progressive ... he'd be no worse than the scores of Authoritarian Republicans vetted and approved by the GOP.

None of them are any better than the other. The whole lot believe in the primacy of the State over the Citizen. They just fight over how what the final result should look like.

If anything ... at least Clooney might be incompetent. I'll settle for that over a career guy with inside knowledge of how to play the game.

Posted by: ScoggDog at July 24, 2017 02:41 PM (Niu5G)

265 Could Clooney win in California? Oh of course, but look what they've been electing - a complete brain dead moron who should have been timed out for Guv years ago, and for Senate someone who thinks that La Raza's drive to let California rejoin Mexico is a pretty good idea.

Who couldn't get elected? Any honest American who loves this country. So California is not the the place to set your standards by. BUT as far as President, Clooney has as much chance of being President as Nancy Pelosi does.

267 "Just know that if he wins, you're going to have George Clooney running
for HIGH office VERY soon....and He'd LIKELY WIN, so........"

Clooney for years now has split the majority of his time between residences in London and Lake Como. He comes back Stateside only for occasional showbiz and political-fundraising galas.

The ads would write themselves. "How can George Clooney represent a country that he chooses not to even live in?" It would be an even more expensive replay of Jon Tossoff in GA-6.

Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at July 24, 2017 02:39 PM (39g3+)

Pretty much. Trump would reduce him to a gibbering mess a la the end of Team America: World Police in a debate. Unless proven wrong, I don't think most celebrities are smart or necessarily quick on their feet. They don't have to deal with adversity, and all we see of them is their good face, not the unscripted real person that comes out when you're in a debate.

And Ben Carson proved that you can't cram effectively enough on all the important issues. If California wants to elect Clooney as governor and he gets practice being a politician for a few years, maybe he'll be a threat. But not immediately.

I'm not going to read it so I have no idea if it contains decent arguments re: the relative value of insuring manufacturing of all types remains in a country vis a vis designing policy to promote more highly technical manufacturing. However. It's Williamson. I'm going to assume that it was not even veiled sneer at the very notion of manufacturing and patriotism itself.

Nearly 20,000 of us went to see Trump in Grand Rapids the night before the election.

She could never make up her mind) She had the name, the career, the charity work - and then she started getting caught on tape, giving voice to every left wing cause and freak out that came by. And she decided not to run, instead to give all her support to Alison Grimes, another Democrat Legacy Project, who then lost the Kentucky race miserably. (both in the number of votes and in her attitude)

And now Ashley Judd is pretty much hated in Kentucky AND Tennessee, and has moved to California for good. And that's what happens to celebrities who think they can use their fame to crap on the people who's support they take for granted.

You're probably right about Harris but I've been looking into her career since her name keeps coming up as a Dem frontrunner. I could be wrong but I don't think she's ready for the big leagues.

Kamala's support is deep, not broad; that is, hardcore progressives would be attracted to her candidacy because she's ideologically farther Left than Obama, but that also makes her a hard-sell to the more moderate, left-leaning voters in a national campaign.

To win, the Dems badly need to get back the blue-collar white vote, the Reagan/Trump Democrats, and I don't think Harris has the stuff to pull it off.

I think ol' spork is on to something.

I work with a Very Concerned Repub like Williamson. The guy envisions the USA as an open economic zone where his goods are cheap, his profits are high, the unemployed cut his grass and are grateful for the opportunity, and the crime never comes to his home or kids schools.

Lots of people like that. Lots.

569 DM has an article about a shocking "health fair" in southwestern VA.

Lots of people showed up to get some free "medical" care, so DM highlights this as a failure of Trump's Obamacare-repeal efforts.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4724754/US-fairground-makeshift-hospital.html

What DM doesn't tell its readers is that this is a dental/eye care clinic. Obamacare doesn't cover dental or eye exams.

Also, VA is a state with a Dim governor (Clinton bag man Terry McAuliffe), so it should be healthcare utopia!

Another thing the DM doesn't tell you is that Wise County, VA, where this fair is located, is coal country. Lots of people there have been without jobs for the past eight years, since Obama promised to drive the coal industry into bankruptcy. If these folks' jobs had not been destroyed by Obama's idiotic energy policies, maybe they could afford to pay to see a dentist, instead of standing in line for hours to get dental care for free.

Anyway, DM histrionically says that this fair is like something one would see in a third-world country like Sudan, and that Trump should see it so that he could witness first-hand the horrors his terrible policies have wrought. His policies? Do these idiots not know that Obamacare is still the law of the land?

Also, I wonder if it has ever occurred to the nitwits at DM that if Hillary had won the election, she would have brought in millions more third-world poor (from Syria, Sudan, Somalia and elsewhere), and they would, like all the other poor muzzie (and Mexican, central American, south American, etc.) migrants that Obama invited here, put even more strain on our already overtaxed health care system?

How exactly would bringing more third-world poor here have improved the health care delivery system for poor people in southwest Virginia?

But yeah, clearly Trump is to blame!

676 Leftist celebrities are a different kind of celebrity -- whiners and wine drinkers. It's also hard to translate PC talking points into political rhetoric that hits home (see Ashley Judd deciding not to run). Celebrities like Kid Rock are Detroit, not the Hamptons. It makes a difference in being able to connect.

I'm sure I'm forgetting lots of people of both the left and the right, but Clint Eastwood, Sonny Bono, and Reagan (all on the right) are a far cry from Rosie O'Donnell or Whoopi Goldberg who are both terrific at playing regular people in movies but are so shrill and off-putting when they talk about politics or their SJW issues.

686 Kid Rock is going to make us lose.

Years ago TMZ played an edited tape of him getting a Lewinski from some groupies.

In October, Debbie Stab-Me-Now is going to be playing that tape on rotation in television ads and my church going, dependable showing up to vote, Republican mother, her tennis friends, and her bridge group are going to stay home and not vote.

Stay away from Kid Rock now. He will just guarantee an easy win for Debbie.

Mark my words. He's poison. Nip this shit in the bud now. Get somebody who can win.
I'm a woman over 40. I live in Michigan. I despise Debbie Stab-Me-Now.

I'm a huge Trump supporter. I was for Trump not because he was a celebrity but because I'd read his books on trade and the economy years earlier.

Kid Rock is no Trump.

I won't for for a pro-abortion, pro-gay, social liberal with a sex tape. And not just a sex tape, one with groupies.

I'm not alone. Believe me.
Are you nuts?

Reagan didn't have a sex tape with groupies.

Talk about lowering of standards for being called a conservative.

Shit, he's a democrat that likes guns. That's it. And I am very pro-2nd amendment.

I live in MI and I want desperately for MI to finally dump our Dem senators. Kid Rock will guarantee the Dem wins. Get it?

So I can tell my teenage daughters, hey girls I just voted for the guy getting oral sex from groupies after a rock concert. What a role model.

Again, are you nuts?

You obviously know nothing about women. I do.
And hell yeah I voted for Reagan - his second term. I was too young to vote for him in his first.

Hell yeah I'm concerned. I want Debbie S. out of office. This is my state. This is our election and if people who don't live here are pushing this guy who won't win, I'm concerned. It actually effect me.
I'm a woman, my friends all love kid rock. I live in a redneck part of CA. Who cares. He's a rock star.

Who the hell cares about your friends in CA? They can't vote in MI.

He won't win.

He'll go down in flames.

And never, never, never has somebody won and election when there is video, actual video of sex acts.

Stop pushing this guy. We don't want him.
And to top it all off, he's a social liberal. Pro-abortion, et al.

He's no conservative.

Stop pushing the guy.

Do you live in MI?

Too many morons - real morons.

Conservatives pushing social liberals with sex tapes.

It's too stupid to contemplate yet here we are.Well, that's sarcasm because I won't vote for him.

And when Debbie starts playing the edited tape on rotation in Oct. the topic will come up. Don't you think?

I was for Trump from the beginning. I predicted he would win from the beginning. I was right. And I'll be right again.

Trump doesn't have a sex tape and I didn't vote for him because he was a celebrity.

Rock is no Trump. Not by a long shot.
He won't get elected. He is unelectable. Get it?

Stop trying to push a guy that's going to guarantee Debbie wins again.

And he's a social liberal. What's the point? We are already very pro-2nd amendment here in MI. That's all he offers and we've already got that here.
Is it on tape? If it is it's being used for blackmail because everybody knows that if a tape is available it's over with. OVER.

I guarantee you that millions of republican women won't vote for him. It's a done deal.

Hell, I won't vote for him. It's as sleazy as it gets. Groupies and sex tapes.

Tell me who is in elected office with a readily available sex tape? One that could be played on rotation?

There aren't any. Guess why?

You find me boring because I'm legit.

692 You are appealing to vaginal residency. You are saying that as a woman in Michigan you know that other women in Michigan won't vote for him. But there are two women from Michigan saying they would vote for him, thus refuting your fallacy.

--------------------------------

I'm not appealing to vaginal residency. I'm telling you plain as day that there is a huge chunk of women who won't vote for a rock star with a sex tape.

I know that I had to drag a group of women - representative of their group - to vote for Trump. At the last hour they relented and voted for Trump. This group votes. They actually were considering stay home. Why?

1) Supreme Court
2) We can't survive Hillary.

While they weren't happy with Trump's three marriages and some of his life story there was no sex tape.

They are not bible thumpers but they go to church regularly. They are not political animals. They generally lead conservative lives without fanfare.

And they are not Barbara Bush GOPe types either. They are normal mothers, etc.

Kid Rock isn't going to save the supreme court. He'd be just another senator and while they don't like Debbie they don't want a long haired, greasy, guy who gets blow jobs on camera.

To think that they will vote to lower the standards of elected officials to sex tape levels for a lousy senator is ridiculous.

And two women who post on a free-wheeling type of website are indicative of nothing.

The sooner Kid Rock is dropped the sooner another outsider can emerge. One who can win.
