Quote II

Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall. Proverbs 16:18

Quote III

The intoxication of power rapidly sobers off in the knowledge of its restrictions and under the prompt reminder of an ever-present and not always considerate press, as well as the kindly suggestions that not infrequently come from Congress. President William Howard Taft

Quote IV

Socialism is the theory that the desire of one man to get something he hasn’t got is more pleasing to a just God than the desire of some other man to keep what he has got. H.L. Mencken

On this day in history, July 18, 1969, Talk about War on Women.

ted kennedy.jpg

The Lion The Drunk Driver of The Senate.Edward F. Kennedy.

Senator Edward 'Ted' Kennedy stood for sleaze. Bloated and drunken, he used his standing in the Kennedy clan to chase vulnerable women - which brought his dream of reaching the White House to a shameful end.
He was the youngest of the four Kennedy brothers, and by far the longest lived.
Incredibly, he was in line to inherit his brother John F. Kennedy's legendary presidency, but his chances were dashed following the drowning of the pretty, young campaign assistant Mary Jo Kopechne.

Historian Story-teller Ken Burns and his enabler, PBS, are at it again.

PBS is planning to run a new documentary series this September on the Vietnam War, produced and written by Ken Burns. Burns is a left-wing "historian" and documentary film producer with a history of having his politics shape the narrative of the story he is telling, with a number of resulting inaccuracies.

Thank you to those who served. You were expected to serve and serve you did.

How do you get around this BS? My chocolate milk identifies as sparkling water.

In the battle to provide nutritional choices for schoolchildren, isn’t chocolate milk better than no milk at all?

According to San Francisco legislators and school officials, the answer. apparently. is no.

Students from elementary through high school grades will no longer be able to enjoy this cafeteria staple in the coming school year, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

When is enough, ENOUGH?

Will the Left take an honest look at Russia? Will they admit Mitt Romney was right in 2012?

f Trump’s most prominent liberal critics on the matter of Russia hope to maintain their credibility, they must cleanse themselves of their hypocrisy. In the pursuit of atonement, some prominent Democrats are starting to throw Barack Obama under the bus. “We Dems erred in ’12 by mocking Boot/Romney Russia worry,” declared Hillary Clinton’s former press secretary, Brian Fallon, last week. Jon Favreau, a former speechwriter for Barack Obama, agreed. “I’m willing to say that in 2012 when we all scoffed at Mitt for saying that, gee, Russia was our number one geopolitical foe, think we were a little off there.”

President Trump is urged to withdraw from the Iran Nuclear Deal. Former Ambassador John Bolton presents his case.

For the second time during the Trump administration, the State Department has reportedly decided to certify that Iran is complying with its 2015 nuclear deal with the Security Council's five permanent members and Germany, known formally as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

If true, it will be the administration's second unforced error regarding the JCPOA. Over the past two years, considerable information detailing Tehran's violations of the deal have become public, including: exceeding limits on uranium enrichment and production of heavy water; illicit efforts at international procurement of dual-use nuclear and missile technology; and obstructing international inspection efforts (which were insufficient to begin with).

Since international verification is fatally inadequate, and our own intelligence far from perfect, these violations undoubtedly only scratch the surface of the ayatollahs' inexhaustible mendaciousness.

The ONT has good news. The ONT has bad news. Dems fundraising sucks. Obama is rolling in cash.

The Democratic National Committee has hit a record low in fundraising while the Obama Foundation reported millions in donations this year.

The DNC hit a record low in May of this year, raising only $4.29 million, the Washington Times reported. The total was the lowest amount for the month of May since 2003.

The DNC took in $4.7 million in April and $6.5 million in March. The committee also reported having $1.9 million in debt in May.

Amazon believes if you stop moving they will throw dirt on top of you. Amazon entering the food biz.

Amazon has made no secret of its ambitions to expand into more fresh food services, from its own, homegrown efforts like AmazonFresh for groceries (first launched in 2013) and Amazon Restaurants for restaurant delivery (first launched in 2014), through to its most recent plan to acquire Whole Foods for $13.7 billion. In fact, the company has its sights set on a number of other culinary areas, such as the development of its own farm-to-table products, Blue Apron-style meal kits, and other food fixes to help it better tap the $800 billion grocery opportunity.

Last week, as we nosed around the various trademarks that have been registered by Amazon to see if we could find anything linked to a new messaging app we believe it is working on, we stumbled upon a number of food-related trademarks.

Amazon this month filed a trademark (serial number 87517760) for “We do the prep. You be the chef,” which relates to a meal-kit service similar to the kind offered by Blue Apron and others.

It had one job to do. Robot fails.

"We were promised flying cars, instead we got suicidal robots."

That was the comment of Twitter user Bilal Farooqui who this afternoon surprised the social network with a bizarre image: a robot which "commited suicide" by drowning itself in a public fountain.

The ends justify the means. Charles Schumer. As filthy as they come.

Last week, one of Washington’s leading Democrats made what should be considered a stunning admission, yet few in the media bothered to notice, or care. In response to comments from Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) about a potential bailout of Obamacare insurers, Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said: “Democrats are eager to work with Republicans to stabilize the markets and improve [Obamacare]. At the top of the list should be ensuring cost-sharing payments are permanent, which will protect health care for millions.”

Schumer’s statement contradicts the Obama administration, which argued in federal court that the cost-sharing reductions are already permanent. It’s also an implicit admission that the Obama administration violated both the U.S. Constitution and federal criminal statutes by spending funds without an appropriation.

The best song ever? No, it's not Toto's 'Africa'.

Obviously, all art—and taste—is subjective. But is there one song—or one kind of song—that’s generally more enjoyable? Recently, author Tom Cox tweeted some musings on the philosophy behind what makes the “best song ever.” A significant portion of the internet, however, argued that he was full of shit because the best song of all time is Toto’s classic 1982 hit, “Africa.”

What is your suggestion?

22 Since the GOP has me in a particularly black mood this evening, let me just ask: what is the point of them? Would we all be better off just not voting for them next year as punishment, even if it meant losing Congress? 25 I don't know about it being the best song ever, but I'm very fond of Solsbury Hill. It has a theme - a good, approachable theme of an opportunity, the excitement of going after that opportunity, and the frustration from having ignorant or selfish people holding you back. And the song is in 7/4, so when Gabriel is talking about his heart beating, the song's time has been skipping a beat throughout.

93 Ted "The Swimmer" Kennedy story is just jaw dropping how bad it was. Miss Kopechne was found in a position of rigor mortis that clearly showed that she died breathing a small air pocket that accumulated in the roof of the car, after several hours. In the dark. Waiting for help that never came.

Now an alternative story goes like this. The cop that saw the two parked, theory is Teddy got spooked, didn't want to get caught with his pants down so to speak. So he took off running. She doesn't know the area, and not used to driving a land yacht, and drives off the bridge. Teddy by this time, has gone back to the party.

It is inexplicable that he didn't report it till the next day. Maybe he thought she had escaped from the car. I dunno. She was pregnant too, as I understand it. Yet that SOB was allowed to wreak havoc in United States congress for decades. A real POS.

97 "Bloated and drunken, [Teddy] used his standing in the Kennedy clan to chase
vulnerable women - which brought his dream of reaching the White House
to a shameful end."

Insanely enough, even after the facts of Chappaquiddick were out, The Swimmer was still considered presidential timber right up until 1980. When he essayed a potential primary challenge against the weak and vulnerable incumbent, Jimmy Carter.

What finally put paid to it was the famous teevee interview by Roger Mudd, wherein Mudd asked him what ought to be the easiest sort of question for any aspirant to the Oval Office, "Why do you want to be President?" and Teddy was too stoned to answer coherently.

Mudd, who is still around, should get a medal for public service.

The founders knew that, and explains all the contortions of constructing a divided, separation of powers type government, independent judiciary, chief executive, no titles of nobility, no kings and queens, no dictators etc etc etc ad infinitum ad nauseam

217 I recently read an article about Ken Burns's "Baseball." The series was 50% about the Negro Leagues. Burns, of course, portrayed Ty Cobb as a racist cracker, the villain of the series as opposed to Jackie Robinson the angel.

Except - Cobb came from an abolitionist family, a rarity in Georgia. Yes, Cobb fought with black people, but he also fought with whites. He had a hair-trigger temper and fought with a lot of guys (and it was much more socially acceptable in the early 20th century. Nobody thought to call the cops over a fistfight.)

When Robinson started playing Cobb said that blacks had the right to play major league baseball and praised Robinson as a player (not surprisingly, he liked Jackie's base stealing.) Yet, the article noted that Burns ignored that because furthering the stereotype of the mean racist Southern white guy was more important than being accurate.

Cobb certainly wasn't a warm, fuzzy guy. But he wasn't the monster he has been portrayed as being. And some SJW's have suggested tossing Cobb (considered one of the top 5 players ever) out of the HOF due to being a racist. Except that for his time and place, he wasn't one.

This reminds me, when Brian Wilson was in his wear pajamas everwhere phase, his children mentioned in an interview he would play "Be My Baby" by the Ronettes at least 100 times a day. Every day. I guess they couldn't get away with breaking it in half like my brother. He thought that was the "best" song.

224 Classic Road Tuneage sure can get you motoring along a wee to swiftly for Officer Friendly's LIDAR gun.

But, there is an even higher aspiration to Road Music, which is in a class of it's own.

Tunes that'll make you pull over and stop, so you can tune the world and the road out, and just simply absorb every note and nuance of the music.

Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, is one such for me.

And before FM radio played it into the ground, so was Disturbed's recent remake of Sound of Silence. Well, the first six or eight times it was on the air, that is.

And finally, if it's a perfect and powerfully rendered version Oh Holy Night. Transcendent, that.

I think that might be the difference. Its one thing to hear it, and be forced to your feet by the glory and wonder of it but... to sing it. That's another thing entirely, to be there part of the chorus.

I just love that piece.

Bach is the retort to people who think great artists have to be anti-religious and anti- bourgeois and being disturbing and "edgy" and offensive is far more important than creating beauty.

Bach was thoroughly middle class (in fact, he struggled financially) a family man with a zillion kids, who was devoted to his church and creating beauty to honor God.

It was the Romantic era that led to the artist = rebel who is not answerable to conventional mores.

Chuck berry was a bad ass, although by the time I started playing it was just some 50's crap. Once I got older and wiser did I understand. That's exactly what it is, but there are a couple sub genres that I don't even care for because even I don't "get it". There are some bands where the singer screams every word like he's getting a telephone pole pounded in his ass by a funny car while the guitar player noodles away like he did 1000 bong hits. I can't handle that shit. Oh, and uh..hair metal. Fuck those guys in particular.

344 "204 Salary? $28,000 a year. In Chicago. "

There's an actual reason it's so low - it's because the person who holds that job is expected to be a trust fund baby, a representative of some Old Family building up their Social Cred, or the spouse of some high dollar financial trader, also building up social cred.

Those jobs are not meant for "ordinary" people. They are meant for wealthy people who really don't need the money but who see great value in virtue signaling their bona fides to all the other rich people.

And that's why education today is such an inexorably liberal profession.

Yes, apparently he is a big Beatles fan. Not at all surprising. Nielsen is a totally under rated guitarist and was quite the influence on me and many others from the late 70's early 80's, no doubt. Less is more... keep it simple, let the feeling and the rush of playing do the work in the song.

441 I hearby declare this to be the Best Music Thread, Ever.

And I can prove it.

A small multitude of 'Rons & 'Ettes.... a Horde, actually.

NOT fighting about "this song vs. that, that genra vs. this".

Instead, bring up and posting some of the finest musical memories, links, band and song titles extant in our assembled, addled memories.

I am very thankful for this thread.

And especially for the reminder of "Here Comes the Sun", by Harrison.

It is one of the most perfectly arranged and recorded songs, ever. Pure, simple and absolutely, completely uplifting in every way.

And it does take me back to that "Solid Gold" place in time, inside. So, there's that.

My sincere thanks to everyone here, for tonight.

442 I saw David Bromberg play Mr Bojangles at a small bar, it was great. He used to play in Jerry Jeff Walker's band, who played BoJangles all the time, so he never got tired of it ha ha. One thing I've noticed, it takes a while to learn a song, sometimes I don't care for it after a while. I can imagine a big star would get pretty sick of anything after about 25,000 plays or so. Somebody famous said, if you write a song make sure you're happy with it, because if it's a hit...

A fine vessel of superb repute.

Condition, inspection, equipment list will all be top-rate, I presume?

I'd think a crew of four would make for a comfortable, efficient and convivial passage.

Adding a fifth or sixth seaman, while helping with watch schedules, can sometimes tend to crowd the elbow-room just a bit. Not to mention the attendant 50% increase in stowage for food, demands on water, etc. Along with the less than primo berthing space for the 4th & 5th mates.

But yes, that's a robust, Blue Water, crossing worthy sloop.

Your friend, chose well.

Yep. JFK was a total failure. The only reason anyone can even claim that his Presidency wasn't a massive train wreck is because it was cut so short.

JFK shares a dubious distinction with FDR. FDR is the only individual who had a whole Constitutional amendment passed just to stop anyone from ever doing what he did, again. Pretty much passed as he was still being put in the ground. JFK had a federal law enacted that stopped anyone from doing what he did, again, as regards stuffing federal positions with family members.

515 ...Yeah, he's a very careful guy, and technically skilled. Boat was in Mobile, he did a bit of refitting there, then with two other guys sailed around to Savannah (a Gulf port, as Barky would say).

Had a jib block break on the way, but jury-rigged their way to St. Petersburg, where they effected a repair. Then on around to Savannah. There the boat was pulled and trucked to Lake Lanier GA for further refitting and 'trials'.

Four people for the crossing to England.

Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at July 19, 2017 12:24 AM (OdK9v)

There are several patterns and sizes of snatch-blocks, which can serve as near-universal "substitutes" for damn near anything on the boat. Good spares to keep stowed with all the other spares and gear.

I've no doubt your friend knows those patterns, well.

Push comes to shove, a vacant sheet winch can serve as a Jib Block, if need be. It ain't pretty, but it'll work.

I think for a Trans-Atlantic, it'd be wise to spend the heavy on all standing rigging and running lines. Blocks, travelers, jib cars and such, depending on intensive, unforgiving inspections.

And 100% new on every scrap of electronics aboard ship. All the way down to the VHF, it's coaxial and the antenna atop the mast.

This is crap you don't wanna deal with 2,000 miles offshore in a blow.

550 Okay, back to music.

If you never owned an "above consumer grade" turntable, this might escape you.

But the Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs, Direct to Disc, digitally remastered vinyl edition of "Yellow Brick Road", when played through a thoughtfully assembled "near-audiophile" sound system, is just simply a musical experience not to be missed.

Same with Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon".

Truthfully? Same with every single one of the MFSL company's productions, be they on vinyl or CD.

These are the closest to having actually been in the studio at the time of recording, that Anyone who was not IN the studio at the time of recording, will ever experience.

This is Gospel Truth.

The cartels don't like drawing attention to themselves. Homemade bombs tend to be used as weapons of assassination, not like what we see with insurgent groups. I'd be more concerned with IEDs being used for area denial in places like Northern California to guard some hippy's pot farm out in the woods.

603 Shortly before the first hour, Pepe appeared before the disciples, who wondered greatly at his presence. he said, 'O Farmers of Memes! Rejoice, for the dankness is with thee.' And the disciples were much confused, saying, 'O Teacher of Dankness! Wherefore sayest thou that dankness is with us? For surely, the dankness is ever with thee.' At this, Pepe smiled, held before their eyes a tendy, and spake thus: 'Surely, the dankness is with thee, for thus have I willed it.' And the disciples saw and understood that normies did shriek before their memes, and that the eyes of the Watchers were upon reruns of cartoons and Andy Griffith, and they rejoiced greatly. 'O Teacher of Dankness! By They Blessed Green hand hath the apps of CNN been brought low, and the advertisers thereof been made ashamed!' And Pepe made the Sign of Schadenfrog, saying, 'And thus art thou made instruments of the Will of Almighty Kek, for behold! thou makest manifest his will through the tism.' Humbled thus, the disciples did confess with one voice, 'Behold! /pol is always right! His name was Vincent Foster! His name was Seth Rich! His name was Peter Smith!'

so i looked it up and "farce", the comedies of ludicrous situations, double entendres and mistaken identities, comes from the french "farcire" from the latin "farcire" meaning stuffing or forcemeat stuffing, metaphorically describing the comic interludes inserted in religious plays.
