Had a friend who was a physical therapist at a place for severely head injured. The overnight staff would regularly sleep through their shift, which caused health problems for patients who needed to be moved, changed, etc.. They were fired. They sued. They won, and had to be re-hired. Then it happened again: fired, sued, re-hired. This was in Atlanta and you can fill in the blanks.
The best, though, was when one of the doctors had a heart attack and died - his office was cleaned out within an hour of the staff getting the news. Just awful.

Black soldier I knew when I was in the Army told me his life story. Apparently, I'm easy to talk to, I got that a lot.

Anyway, he said his mother (single, of course) insisted on his speaking proper English, taking school seriously, and avoiding the local bad influences. Like, really insisted. She was absolutely driven to make sure he had what he needed to succeed in the world.

And for this, she was ostracized. Her own family treated her badly because she was 'putting on airs' trying to get her son out of the ghetto.

He qualified for Army MI (which is where I met him) and got out. Then he got cancer, poor guy.

It's a profoundly sick subculture.

Back un the '60s Mom supervised nurses workig in a hospital in downtown St. Louis. She would regularly fire nurses who repeatedly failed to show for their shift.

Finally one accused Mom of being racist. Mom got summoned before hospital board to answer for her crimes.

The nurse went 1st, saying "the white woman hate us blacks". Short version.

Mom stood up, looked the board down then responded,
"If I hate black women why do I keep hiring black women to replace the lazy workers?"

She won that round abd noibe ever told ger of any following complaints for the 5 years after that sge worked there.

One of the few times there was a really ugly racial incident in the TV show "Survivor" happened in one of the early seasons where all the contestants where competing in a "Challenge" in which teams had to carry a heavy human-shaped dummy filled with sand over a difficult jungle course. One team had a black woman on it, who earlier was already pissing off the other contestants for not helping build the camp, and during the race when the team was climbing up hillsides carrying the dummy, dhe would grab onto its leg and use it like a rope to pull herself up -- so the other team members had to basically carry the dummy's weight and her weight.

When that team lost, they decided to vote her off, and they told her so, and she asked why, and they told her the reason, and she literally didn't understand what she had done wrong, and couldn't grasp that she had become a burden on the other, rather than part of the solution. Her response? The classic: To accuse the others of racism. Of course. It was briefly very ugly. "You're calling lazy just because I'm black!" And the white team members shifted uncomfortably, because she WAS lazy, but now they couldn't say so.

Luckily she was quickly voted off, and the brouhaha blew over.

(The show quickly became boring and repetitive after that, but that's a different story.)

The heavy-set black guy on Fox Business (Charles Payne?) tells a similar story (minus the cancer). The Lefties have committed a crime against humanity in their goal of keeping blacks on the Lefty Plantation: angry, paranoid and anti-intellectual achievement.

Back in my past life working in a predominantly black city, the Director of Public Safety tried to get High School seniors to apply for jobs at the Fire Department. He got zero applicants; they all wanted to be rap "singers" or professional athletes.

Freon is not only not an element, it's a trademarked product name, dreamt up by a marketing department. The rest, however, are the fundamental building blocks of nature.

But 95% of people have no idea of this.

Interestingly, the most most common guess as to the imposter is "Neon," because neon signs are usually advertisements, so by association people think Neon must be a marketing name. "Krypton" is also a common wrong guess, because people think it came from Superman comics.

Furthermore, if you encounter young black men who have been processed through the criminal justice system, one way or another, they will often tell you (when they're being honest), that it's virtually impossible to not engage in some sort of criminal activity, if you live in some areas. Because, if you don't you will be perceived as weak, and you will be targeted for having crimes perpetrated against you.

Taught to boys, single digits in age, that no matter what mom tells you, no matter what your schools tell you, your pastors, your counselors, your law enforcement folk. The law of the neighborhood is enforced by the thugs, and you better become a thug yourself. Or else.

131 "Interesting; i.e., scary, chart of Whoa Fat's missile."

I keep seeing people around the dextrosphere poking fun at the Nork missile effort. Incredibly stupid and ignorant and shortsighted of them.

Pyongyang is making a steady, determined push to improve the performance and reliability of their boosters. And the Norks really *are* improving same.

Pretty much all ICBM-capable nations began with pokey little SRBMs that didn't go far and that blew up a lot. But once the key engineering lessons are learnt, a bona fide long range ICBM force that works is not that far away.

If the Great Eater makes program changes -- for instance, dropping the idea of having parallel SLBM and ICBM development and instead focusing exclusively on only ICBM dev work, real trouble may impend.

Meanwhile, the USA has farted around in a slow and disorganized manner with ballistic missile defense. The last time it was taken seriously was under Reagan. Poppy Bush slowed it way down, and no one since ever sped it back up or imbued the work with any urgency.

134 True story.

I retired 4 years ago from a state job. I was the director of a large statewide program and had a colleague who held a similar position.

My colleague was an older white man who worked for the state for 40 years. He was quiet, sweet and humble. He also had a black son in law and mixed race grandchildren.

He supervised a black employee who for 8 years showed up to work only sporadically and who had never produced anything on the job. Impossible to can her, because she claimed mental illness. She had long ago exhausted all paid leave, but continued for years to receive a FULLY PAID SALARY.

My colleague, over the years had donated more than $10K in sick leave to this employee.

When she began coming to work only once or twice a week, my colleague finally began to take action to remove her--against all odds and the union.

The woman accused my colleague of racism, because years before, in an effort to motivate his staff, he had quoted a commencement speech by Hillary Clinton, which mentioned slavery.

My colleague was disciplined by the state of Ohio's HR depaertment, which went into his permanent file.

He was forced into retirement. Two years later the black employee was finally fired. It had taken 10 years, and it was estimated she had worked only about one year of the ten.

AND THEY WONDER HOW THEY GOT TRUMP.

163 Too bad this whole 'ghetto' culture has taken over nearly everything. Children who I have known since they were babies, from nice middle-class families, all of a sudden put on some kind of weird southern-urban accent. Strangest thing I have ever seen or heard. Upset quite a few of the grandparents I know who worked darn hard to get out of the city to have that be 'authentic' somehow to the youngsters.

well, it helps when the people uttering the words have divorced themselves from the concept of word having objective meaning. It is really easy to call someone a racist when you do not have to demonstrate any racist behavior.

I don't remember the noise being as bad as it is here in St. Louis. The game was against the Blue Jays, and apparently everyone from Canada comes to Phoenix when the Jays play there, which of course does NOT happen every year.

Very polite, as the stereotype would suggest. I did see perhaps the ugliest human being in the world wearing a Jays jersey. Man, that dude wasn't just hit with the ugly stick, he was run over by the ugly truck. Twice.

234 To my surprise, Larry O'Connor on WMAL in DC is doing a live show today (that's the surprise) and will be doing a reading of the Declaration. Right now he is talking about what a great movie "1776" is and why. Also, asking callers to tell him what traditions or rituals they observe today. He suggested that reading the Declaration aloud should be done just as Biblical passages are read during a Seder. That tradition has helped keep the Seder's meaning alive for thousands of years and it would be appropriate to do so for our founding documents.

Very cool.

Per Hugh Thomas's The Slave Trade. many of the slaves, at least in the early part of the slave trade, were the ne-er-do-wells - the lazy, the criminals, other various assorted shitheads - of the tribe, along with some rivals of the chieftain. Imagine Martians coming down and offering us $10 million each for every inmate of San Quentin. Woot!

Only later did the coastal tribes start going on raffias into the interior to kidnap members of other tribes.

Yep. One of the biggest obstacles to ending the slave trade turned out to be African chieftains. Thomas reports that in an era when the wealthiest noble in England made #12,000 p.a. from his estates, one of the African chieftains made 20 times that from the slave trade. They couldn't understand why the British wanted to end such a good thing.

Taking the talent from teams like the Indians and the Athletics, and then when free agency came along, players from wherever they wanted. Paid them well, won championships, and when the guys they won with got old, they traded them to the Indians for the next rising star.

East coast big shots, stealing assets from the hinterlands and flyover country. What could be more American than that.

302 270 Was just telling my wife that -- in every market I've lived -- the radio announcers are far superior to the television guys."

We're blessed with both good radio and TV announcers. I enjoy the back and forth of our two TV guys (one of them, Brian Anderson, also national announcing of baseball and basketball) and Bob Uecker is one of the greats, still funny and sharp as a tack, although I fear his eyesight is going. He calls HRs on balls that are clearly going to be caught in the outfield.

I quit celebrating Independence Day a couple of years back.

Obsolete. Superannuated. No longer accurate or relevant.

Now, I celebrate the holiday which is far more in keeping with the zeitgeist of 21st century America:

Dependence Day.

I need to have a Free Shit Army flag made, so that I can fly it every year on July 4th.

The only thing I need beyond that is to figure out how to scam my way onto EBT so that Uncle Sugar is paying for the food that I barbecue. Since so many of my fellow "citizens" are already doing just that.

313 Last years' WCS, when they were played in Chicago, Cleveland fans could go to the stadium in Cleveland and watch the game on the Jumbo-Tron. At one point, the TV guys were so insufferably bad that the Cleveland fans asked if they could turn off the sound and pipe in a feed from the local radio guys.

What's that announcer guy's name? Buck Jerk? Something like that. He is universally reviled. Even grammie winger was cussing at him, that's how bad he was.
Posted by: OregonMuse, AoSHQ Thought Leader at July 04, 2017 03:28 PM (XNL5i)

I will repeat as often as necessary: Those of you who hate Joe Buck, I suppose I can't blame you, but what you REALLY hate, is not the man, but the way Fox Sports broadcasts.

There is constant feed coming into the ears of these guys, stupid stats, quips, and promos for upcoming tv shows, that the voice you hear, it's just the mouthpiece. You are hearing the words, almost entirely scripted, by the network itself.

So hate on Joe Buck if you want, but it's a misplaced hatred.

He's really not that bad, when he's unplugged from the network feed. Which these days, never happens. When he used to do local Cardinals games, especially with his dad, he was fine.

Then he asked me to call back in a week to let them know how they were doing.

Back around 1980 or so I went to a meeting of the "South Place Ethical Society" in London. It had been an Unitarian Church but in the mid to late 19th century they moved away from the God thing. The meeting was a riot of laughs. The guest speakers were a couple of left wingers trying to get the members to join protests against the deployment of U.S. missiles and the members were arguing over the relative ethics of some tribe in Borneo and the English "Tribe".

Kind of like Franco, and Spain. The Republicans were Commies, backed by Moscow even before the Civil War, which they precipitated by murdering the leader of the Nationalists. Franco needed help from someone, to offset the assistance lent his enemies by the USSR, and the only offer on the table was from Mussolini and later Hitler.

The Western democracies didn't want to know. I got the impression that Franco was less of an ideologue than he was a Spanish nationalist.

Good point. It's difficult even to find a history of the Spanish Civil War. Most treatments are written by Red sympathizers who whitewash Red atrocities in the run up to the Civil War, and then highlight the Nationalists' atrocities afterward.

But in fact, the Republicans had taken to murdering clerics, nuns, opposing politicians, etc. and burning churches and religious schools, all on a wholesale basis. Apparently that's what triggered Franco to act. He was a lot like Pinochet in many respects.

And yeah, he did jack up a lot of Reds after the Civil War - again, like Pinochet - but that probably needed doing, and in any case, had the Reds won, they no doubt would have done exactly the same thing.

500 An ex-girlfriend of mine is a self-described "socialist".
She doesn't exactly know what that means. She is actually just a garden variety tax and spend affluent white- guilt-ridden liberal.
So we were having a spirited discussion about our respective world views and I said I'd like to be able to work hard, take care of me and mine, keep most of what I make, and otherwise be left the hell alone.
Of course she found my ideology repugnant and dragged out every tired old trope about those less fortunate, my success in life being the product of anything and everything except my own diligence and work ethic, the "ridiculous" amount of money I make, how I should be made to pay the bulk of my income in taxes, etc.
I pointed out that she lives a very affluent life in a beautiful home in Boulder Colorado, she drives a BMW, her and her husband vacation all over the world, etc etc. Her husband is a well-compensated exec at a huge multinational corporation and probably makes way more than I do.
When I challenged her to walk it like she talks it, to give her money away, to sell her home and donate the proceeds to a homeless shelter, to ride a bike instead of a $75,000 convertible, to stop vacationing in Peru and India, and in general to stop acting like a rich twat, she screwed up her face, and with all the indignation she could muster, sputtered "You......capitalist!"

514 I'm reading the Autobiography of Mark Twain and was struck how "plus change" etc:

Twain was correcting a manifesting wrong story about his handling of Gen. Grant's memoirs and gave a release to an AP rep:

He read it over, hesitated, said it was certainly a matter of great public interest but that he couldn't see anyway to make the statement without its being also a pretty good advertisement for General Grant's book, and for my publishing firm; but he said if we would pay $500 he would send it over the wires to every newspaper in the country connected with that institution.

This pleasant offer was declined. But the proposition seemed to explain to me a thing which had often puzzled me. That was the frequent appearance among the Associated Press dispatches of prodigious puffs of speculative schemes. One, in particular, was a new electric light company of Boston. During a number of weeks there had been almost daily a wildly extravagant puff of this company's prosperous condition in the Associated Press dispatches of the Hartford papers.

The prosperity or the unprosperity of that company was a matter of not the slightest interest to the generality of newspaper readers, and I had always wondered before why the Associated Press people should take such an apparent interest in the matter. It seemed quite satisfactorily explained now. The Associated Press had sent the World's misstatements over the wires to all parts of the country free of charge for the reason, no doubt, that that statement slandered General Grant, lied about his son, dealt the Century Company a disastrous blow, and was thoroughly well calculated to sharply injure me in both character and pocket.

Therefore it was apparent that the Associated Press were willing to destroy a man for nothing, but required cash for rehabilitating him again. That was Associated Press morals. It was newspaper morals, too. Speaking in general terms it was always easy to get any print to say any injurious thing about a citizen in a newspaper, but it was next to impossible to get that paper or any other to right an injured man. We have a law of libel, but it is inoperative and merely cumbers the statute books.

For several reasons: First - The case must take its routine place in the calendar of the court and that ensures that some months must elapse before the courts get down to it, so that whatever injury the libel might do has been already done. Second - A jury is afraid of the newspapers and always lets a newspaper off at the cheapest and easiest rate. As the result libel suits are very uncommon and whenever one is tried it simply serves as a reminder to later comers that the best way is to let libel suits alone and take what the newspapers choose to give you in the way of abuse.
