He invited me over for a Brexit celebration. His daughter and son in law have a farm up north and legal guns. He promised I could shoot at the Dutch so I may have to volunteer.

I spent the Fourth of July, 1991 is London. A lot of the pubs were decked out in Red, White, and Blue with American flags waving. Maybe not 'celebrating' but certainly catering to the Americans who were visiting. Many a pint was drunk that day. Well, many a pint was drunk nearly every time I wasn't working. Had to blend in with the natives and drinking is a way of life in the UK. I blame the weather.

[hands are reluctantly raised]
John Winger: I cried my eyes out. So we're all dogfaces, we're all very, very different, but there is one thing that we all have in common: we were all stupid enough to enlist in the Army. We're mutants. There's something wrong with us, something very, very wrong with us. Something seriously wrong with us - we're soldiers. But we're American soldiers! We've been kicking ass for 200 years! We're ten and one! Now we don't have to worry about whether or not we practiced. We don't have to worry about whether Captain Stillman wants to have us hung. All we have to do is to be the great American fighting soldier that is inside each one of us. Now do what I do, and say what I say. And make me proud.

Probably because France was a powerful country then. During Louis XIV's day, all the foreign courts and educated people spoke French (and you know damn well the French were correcting their pronunciation every time they spoke it). The French Revolution was a massively important world event (and unfortunately, and stupidly, more peoples have modeled their own revolutions on the French one rather than the vastly more successful American one.)

They were a big power in Europe and the world then and now they are not and have not been for a while.

148 Hamburgers and hotdogs today. Lawn is freshly mowed. ish....

We're trying something new. We're going to grind a beef, and pork roast, and make our burgers from that. Bacon will also be added, assuming the place we buy our bacon is open.

The next potluck at my wife's church is going to be a hot dog and baked potato bar 'theme'. (My idea). Many of the toppings can be shared, so it actually works out well, assuming no one brings bottles of ketchup, or mustard as their potluck offering.

We test drove this idea at my house a couple weeks ago. Things that go really good with both hot dogs and baked potatoes, (in addition to your standard topping fare):

Feta Cheese
Blue Cheese
Cheddar Cheese
Cilantro/lime/jalapeno/mayo sauce
Crumbled bacon
Diced tomatoes and onions
Diced Jalapeno peppers, (prepped mild, and hot)
Diced celery

Basically, we raided the fridge of anything that could be diced, chopped, or sauced. Worked out quite well.

IMO, best hot dog was topped with diced onion, chili, diced tomato, crumbled feta cheese, and the cilantro sauce.

I snapped. "A John Wayne movie," I said. "That's what you were going to say, wasn't it? We think war is a John Wayne movie. We think life is a John Wayne movie - with good guys and bad guys, as simple as that. Well, you know something, Mister Limey Poofter? You're right. And let me tell you who the bad guys are.

They're us. WE BE BAD.

"We're the baddest-assed sons of bitches that ever jogged in Reeboks. We're three-quarters grizzly bear and two-thirds car wreck and descended from a stock-market crash on our mother's side. You take your Germany, France, Spain, roll them all together and it wouldn't give us room to park our cars.

We're the big boys, Jack, the original, giant, economy-sized, new and improved butt kickers of all time. When we snort coke in Houston, people lose their hats in the Cap d'Antibes. And we've got an American Express card credit limit higher than your piss-ant metric numbers go.

"You say our country's never been invaded? You're right, little buddy. Because I'd like to see the needle-dicked foreigners who'd have the guts to try. We drink napalm to get out hearts started in the morning. A rape and a mugging is our way of saying 'Cheerio.' Hell can't hold our sock-hops. We walk taller, talk louder, spit further, fuck longer, and buy more things than you know the names of. I'd rather be a junkie in New York than king, queen, and jack of all you Europeans. We eat little countries like this for breakfast and shit them out before lunch."

Go over to your hardware or Home Depot, Lowe's or whatever, and get an electric charcoal starter. I've used one for years, my parents used one, and they always work. You make a pile of charcoal over the starter coil, plug it in, and in 15 minutes, the charcoal is ignited and you can spread it out to start cooking.

Who cried when Old Yeller got shot at the end?

I'd always sort of subliminally thought that Europeans were pretty much like us apart from superficial aspects.

Living in Europe for many years, I found out different, and learned why right-wingers used to decry things as "un-American." Although at the time, as a kid, I used to laugh, they were right; many of the attitudes evinced in Europe are completely antithetical to American values.

For example, Brits deprecate self-made men, but have no problem with those who inherited their money.

Huh? Why? Because they (generalizing here) consider the pie to be fixed in size, so someone who made a lot of money necessarily must have done so at the expense of others. He's a piggy.

The wealthy do-nothing heir? Not his fault. He didn't choose to be born to wealth. So no foul.

As I've ranted so many times, many of the worst airheads and commies etc. in California moved here from the Northeast and upper Midwest.

California exerts/exerted a siren call to the best and the worst in the country. The best came because they figured a new shuffle of the cards would give them a better chance to move up. FWIW, I wouldn't characterize the Japanese as creative. (Bizarre, yes.) They're unexcelled at incrementally improving things, God knows, but their culture subtly discourages stepping out much from the crowd. They have a number of sayings along the lines of "the protruding nail gets hammered."

My older brother once told me of a Japanese lady he used to work with. She would complain about just this thing, that is, the American tendency to want to stick out from the crowd. And she'd talk up the importance of the values of "community" and "family" and why can't America be more like this? This went on for some time until one day my brother finally told her, look, what you're describing is America. This is the way we are. If you're going to be continually dissatisfied with this, perhaps you'd be happier living in Japan where those values you mentioned are held in higher esteem. She didn't have much to say after that.

After all, he told her what she didn't like about America is America.

First of all, I use the charcoal bag's paper as the ignition source -- as I use the charcoal, I tear up the bag. It's a heavier (kraft) paper, so it doesn't burn as fast. Tear into small sections and loosely crumple. Put crumpled paper under the wire in the chimney as well as some above the wire. You need extended exposure to the flames to ignite the charcoal.

Never use self-igniting charcoal.

350 There are a lot of parallels between Britain and Japan: two island nations, both heavily maritime in orientation, two settled and stratified social orders, both considering themselves very different from the nearby mainland, etc.

But in one respect they're diametrically opposite: the Brits affectionately indulge (and subtly encourage) eccentrics, whereas the Japanese do exactly the opposite.

351 Posted by: OregonMuse, AoSHQ Thought Leader at July 04, 2017 01:49 PM (XNL5i)

I had a Japanese roommate once who was just the opposite. She was young and wildly enthusiastic about everything American and was delighted by the odd characters she saw walking around. She bought 3 pairs of cowboy boots to take back to Japan.

An Argentinian woman I knew had the same reaction. she told me that you just don't see goofs and eccentrics on the streets there.

The only acceptable way to "stand out" there is to be extremely well dressed and beautiful.

I have to admit, I liked the idea of the evening promenade she described to me - couples get dressed up and stroll up and down the boulevards, checking out each other's clothes and showing off their finery before everyone goes to dinner (at about 9 p.m.) She thought that custom came from the Italian emigrants. Yes, it's peacocky and show-offy, but I'd rather look at decked out Argentinian couples than at a bunch of purple-haired lesbians in pussy hats.
