The New York City Subway System Is Falling Apart, And The Real Culprit Is Andrew Cuomo

It is surprising to no one who has paid any sort of attention to New York politics that Andrew Cuomo is a sleazy power broker whose most fervent desire (aside from becoming President) is to be in the limelight. That he is making political hay out of his own failing is typical.

How Andrew Cuomo broke the New York subway is a damning indictment of the Governor.

Cuomo has been directly responsible for the subway for over six years. It has been obvious since he took power that something like this would happen and he's done nothing but make it worse. The crisis is a clear result of his incompetence, his abysmal politics, and his odious personality.

Let's be honest, there are other players in this rapidly growing catastrophe. Michael Bloomberg and Bill De Blasio were well aware of the damage that deferring capital spending and maintenance on the subway system would cause, but pet projects like destroying traffic flow in Manhattan for the sake of some silly pedestrian malls and CitiBikes for virtue-signalling douchebags, or in De Blasio's case, allowing unfettered construction to appease his real estate industry masters, was more important than the largest public transportation system in the country.

Yet it is a microcosm of the Leftist approach to social engineering. They want us to move to the cities, where we can ditch our cars and lawns and live packed in like sardines, riding their wonderful mass transit systems and voting Democrat for the rest of our lives.

But they can't even get us to work, because as usual, every concrete plan the Left has foisted on us has failed. They spend our money on things that do nothing for the quality of life of their constituents, then come hat in hand for more money when the trains stop running and commerce grinds to a halt because of their abject failure to do the minimum required of them: keep stuff running.

A quality leader would have seen the problem approaching (or listened to the experts who have been shouting about it for years), and proposed a crash program to upgrade, modernize, and expand the subway. Tackling the maintenance backlog would reduce delays and forestall expensive repairs from failures. Upgraded technology would reduce train headways, which together with more trains and stations would allow for enhanced throughput -- now a critical necessity in downtown especially. And tackling the cost problem would enable everything else, as dollars could be stretched much, much further.

Instead of doing this, Andrew Cuomo pushed for free college tuition! And he got it.

25 New York City.

The first time I was physically in NYC, I was just passing through - I flew into Newark to spend Christmas 1990 with my girlfriend and her family upstate in Red Hook. We drove over the GW bridge and through the Bronx. On the side of the highway were completely stripped carcasses of automobiles, some burned. I actually reached over and locked my door, as traffic was stop-and-go right there and I was a little worried, being a middle-class white boy from the (relatively safe) hinterlands of Seattle. It was everything I was told and shown NYC was in the 70's and 80's.

The next time I was in NYC was a little less than 10 years later, at the 2000 International Naval Review. The difference couldn't have been more striking. I never felt unsafe, even on the subway, which was free for us in uniform. Times Square and environs (Hell's Kitchen, Broadway, even Greenwich Village), where we spent most of our time, never felt dangerous. I even had the opportunity to drive over the GW again, and there were nothing on the side of the road. The City had turned a corner.

*That's* the difference Giuliani made, in only a few short years. And his successors are pissing it away.

What are you referring to here; how did "unfettered construction" interfere with maintaining the subway system? I might agree with you if I knew what you were referring to, but just going by the language, it sounds like lefty bs. Generally, I think construction is a good thing, and those who try to stop it are frequently lefty idiots who interfere with new construction on one hand and then bemoan the high cost of housing on the other.

Trump is not a WASP. If you look into Trump's background, it would appear that he is a WASP... but he's not. At all.

IMHO, Trump is blue collar all the way, and handles things the way a teamster would. And almost ALL of our politicians and MSM are WASPs, and not used to anyone who is not of their "class."

I DO think he is far more cunning and intelligent than any of his enemies and even some of his supporters give him credit for. He often seems to be pretty masterful at redefining the rules of a given conflict so as to require playing the game to fit his agenda. And the pols and media are disadvantaged because he brings a totally different perspective to the narrative (streetfighting NYC developer vs. "elite" left media/political complex).

83 "Yet it is a microcosm of the Leftist approach to social engineering. They want us to move to the cities, where we can ditch our cars and lawns and live packed in like sardines, riding their wonderful mass transit systems and voting Democrat for the rest of our lives.

But they can't even get us to work, because as usual, every concrete plan the Left has foisted on us has failed. They spend our money on things that do nothing for the quality of life of their constituents, then come hat in hand for more money when the trains stop running and commerce grinds to a halt because of their abject failure to do the minimum required of them: keep stuff running."

----

The influence of Agenda 21 is real. But as noted above, once we've given up everything, they won't keep their end of the bargain.

In Los Angeles, the money collected for roads is not spent on the roads, which are crumbling. Lanes of major roads are being shut down for bike lanes and green space. Besides simply stealing the money to buy votes with Free Shit, the objective also appears to be, to make automobile travel so odious, that commuters will be driven onto public transportation. You know, public transportation -- like a subway for example.

Posted by: Anon Y. Mous at July 02, 2017 12:16 PM (FUu/Z)

Traffic in NYC has gotten significantly worse in part because of the uncontrolled construction going on pretty much everywhere. In Manhattan, crosstown streets are narrowed to one lane all over midtown because the construction crews take over one lane for various things.

I have no issue with construction, but in a dense city it needs to be managed more effectively so that automobile traffic is impacted less than it is in NYC. All of those people who would normally use cabs and Ubers and buses and drive themselves are now taking the subway, which adds volume to an already maxed-out system.

140 VERY OT:
"Transgender women who were born male should be given womb transplants so that they can have children, leading NHS doctors have told The Mail on Sunday. And fertility experts say taxpayers should fund such transplants for those who identify as women, on the basis of equality enshrined in the law."
So... once grandma and grandpa get old, they're cool with withholding treatment and letting them die, even if it's not necessary. "Liverpool Care Pathway." And cancer, a disease that impacts millions, can wait, and people can die. And they aren't OK with people taking their terminally ill child out of the hospital and paying for alternative treatments out of their own pocket; the child definitely should die.
But "womb transplants", financed by the public, are a priority. Because men who think they're women should be able to give birth. Because of equality.
What about women who can't have children? Are they eligible for womb transplants? Just wondering.

I have been having the thought a lot lately that Trump and Trump-ism are not just fighting "The Left" (whatever you take that to be), but a massive, entrenched culture of civic ignorance, on a global scale. Not only are the great unwashed ignorant of civics, the people wielding the levers of power are flat out stupid as well.

Reagan had to deal with a relatively specific threat from commies and fellow travelers. Trump has to deal with a pervasive, all-encompassing, juvenile hive-mind of screaming garbage babies with no discernible ideology other than "I'M BETTER THAN YOU, DAAAAD!". How do you fight that? 241 Ladylibertarian, you even understate the worse situation Trump confronts compared to Reagan.

Watched the broader GOP/congressional behavior when Reagan was there up close. Of course back then even the Dems were a different animal - at this point the party has been purged, effectively, and at the national level is a freak-show (essentially something that's a secret to their NPR-level base, who are tribal/default voters). Yes, Harry Reid back then was a doctrinaire western/mountain state Democrat, making him more "conservative" than about 50% of today's GOP.

Trump is essentially alone, as the last 6 months illustrate.

And it's important to note that the press if much, much worse than it was in Reagan's day. Hard to explain and illustrate in a comment, and yes some apples/oranges stuff going on, but again direct personal experience confirms the huge difference - for the worse - between Reagan's and Trump's media environments.

Don't know if Reagan's approach of co-opting and outflanking his congressional obstacles will work for Trump. To date his WH has shown no hint of even thinking this way. It has looked, on the surface, like a pretty lame "get me a win!" approach, without much concern for substance (e.g. O-care repeal). This may be changing. We'll see.

272 Warai-toko: "a massive, entrenched culture of civic ignorance".

Well said.

Everyone (understandably) focuses on leadership, and leadership personalities - but for a long time, including here, I have focused on what makes the jaw-dropping nonsense possible. That is, the electorate, and the collapsed institutions (intact in form, often hollowed out in substance, and standards).

So while Trump was a god-send (said in an agnostic way), and at least a speed bump on the precipitous downward slope, in some respects, whether he's any more is questionable, given the degradation Warai-toko notes.

As recently as 2008, even in CA, state-wide ballot measures that were stupid (tax increases on "the rich" who already pay almost all of the state's taxes, for example) were easily defeated. And recall that marriage redefinition met perhaps its most humiliating rebuke (in its near unbroken record of rejection by the actual culture and society, at the ballot box) in CA - Prop 8.

Since then? Some sort of disastrous frontier was crossed. Bullet trains, plastic bag bans, ludicrous infringement on 2A rights, you name it - anything that would pass the Burlington VT town council will now be approved by CA voters. Can't dissect it for you - though many will jump in with simplistic explanations like illegal migration or Prop 187, etc. - but it's a striking change.

Anyway, Trump (or any leader) may be part of the solution, but the problem is much bigger.

But I think, perhaps optimistically, that the impact would be so horrendous that they will shy away from that. The gas tax pushback currently is a small hint of what would happen if they tried to mess with Prop 13.

Prop 13 going away would devastate many tribal mindless Dem voters (school teachers, unionized public employees, minorities who have started their climb up the ladder) to such an extent that I think it won't happen.

Of course, I also could not believe that Obama could possibly be elected (McCain being nominated was a respectable second to that "couldn't effing happen" prediction).

The earth's atmosphere/troposphere is not a greenhouse, nor has it been shown that it acts like one. That is the whole question.

332 Electric cars are a scam, too. It would be much more accurate and honest to call them "Coal-powered" cars.

Battery makers are trying desperately to figure out how to reach 450 Wh/kg (Watt-hours / kilogram) of specific energy. (Gasoline offers12,000 Wh/kg.)

Earlier this week, several outlets reported a study from the Swedish Environmental Research Insitute that the "carbon footprint" of electric car battery production was equivalent to driving for 8 years. (This ignores the 'carbon footprint' of recharging the batteries for the life of the car.)

Every kilowatt-hour of storage capacity in the battery generated emissions of 150 to 200 kilos of carbon dioxide at the factory. (A Nissan Leaf's battery is about 30 kWh, and the Tesla Model S's about 100 kWh.)

Thus, even before buying the car, emissions occurred corresponding to approximately 5.3 tons and 17.5 tons of Carbon Dioxide.

As a comparison, a trip for one person round trip from Stockholm to New York by air causes the release of more than 600 kilograms of carbon dioxide, according to the UN organization ICAO calculation. A Leaf's battery manufacture corresponds to 8 trips; a Tesla S's about 26 round trips.

335 The classic anti-trope is that "Hey, these aliens had the technology to come all this way, but didn't have the firepower to squash us in one maneuver? Sure..."

But that assumes that propulsion tech is identical to military tech. Also that our physical weakness is the same as their physical weakness.

Maybe some alien species gets really good (or really lucky) about finding out how to travel long distances efficiently, but they never had a need for anything much more complex than a slingshot to kill each other.

Now imagine, from their eyes, you came all this way, in a grand fleet that is the pride of your species, to find these primitive, non-space-faring monkeys on this resource-rich planet, ripe for the taking... And after a few days of flinging pebbles at them ineffectually, most of your fleet gets vaporized by nuclear weapons.

Good message, booknlass; I'm praying for revival!
My message today was on "liberty in Christ" and the passage was from Galatians 5

I ended my sermon with this quote from Henry Foster, who was a 19th century Christian doctor who started a sanitarium for sick teachers and missionaries and ministers:

The highest liberty one can ask for in this world is ours when we come into the mind of Christ and are baptized with the Spirit of Christ. When we are introduced into that mind and Holy Spirit, we begin to feel the divine impulse in the depths of our being; we find our liberty there expressed in doing jut what we want to do. That is the liberty of a Christian, to do what he has a mind to do. Our whole being is reaching every day after the welfare of somebody, after the good of somebody. When were are ready with the highest pleasure and to love to sacrifice, bear, and endure, that thing, whatever it is can be accomplished.

I must disagree with this. Lee was successful in defensive battles, largely due to his engineering background. He was not successful when he went on the offensive, Antietam and Gettysburg.

The third day of Ghettysburg will be debated forever. When I stood at the statue of Meade on Seminary ridge and looked out across the field Pickett's division had to cross I had one question. General Lee, what were you thinking? Personally, I think that his health was deteriorating and he was tired of fighting. He wanted it to end there. However, that is the subject of much debate.

They just had the "soft opening" of a new light rail system in the Bay Area -- the "SMART" train, from Marin to Sonoma County.

As a public transit rider, I was initially intrigued and excited. Until I learned that:

-- The new train EXACTLY DUPLICATES an existing bus route (Golden Gate Transit #101).
-- The train COSTS MORE than the bus.
-- The train runs LESS FREQUENTLY than the bus.
-- The train has FEWER STOPS than the bus.
-- The train TAKES LONGER than the bus.

Light rail!

Senior Chief, that's because without Chiefs nothing as detail oriented as running a warship gets done right. The bad guy in a Hollywood plot must have gravitas, skills and opportunity.

You could have a messcrank SA striking for Boson Mate be the bad guy, but that is not credible. Same way as a non-LDO Ensign. An Ensign as a bad guy -- please.

FWIW, good chiefs and LPOs are always the heroes in my book.

386 The classic anti-trope is that "Hey, these aliens
had the technology to come all this way, but didn't have the firepower
to squash us in one maneuver? Sure..."

But that assumes that propulsion tech is identical to military tech.
Also that our physical weakness is the same as their physical weakness.

Maybe some alien species gets really good (or really lucky) about
finding out how to travel long distances efficiently, but they never had
a need for anything much more complex than a slingshot to kill each
other.

Now imagine, from their eyes, you came all this way, in a grand
fleet that is the pride of your species, to find these primitive,
non-space-faring monkeys on this resource-rich planet, ripe for the
taking... And after a few days of flinging pebbles at them
ineffectually, most of your fleet gets vaporized by nuclear weapons.

That was a joke. Harry Turtledove wrote a series whose plot is about alien invaders who scout earth in the Medieval era, and return to invade it... in the middle of World War 2. They're shocked that humanity advanced so quickly since their own species took tens of thousands of years to reach the same point.

He also wrote a short story about an alien race that invades Earth in the 2050s. They are equipped with the most advanced weaponry that their race has to offer: muskets and swords. It turns out that hyperdrive and antigravity are ridiculously easy to create, and so most species discover it sometime around the iron age.

So, if reducing "greenhouse gases" were to be a valid goal, and I reject that entirely, adopting solar panels is not the way to achieve that. As long as we're refighting Gettysburg and someone mentioned Turtledove,
my favorite book of his is 'Guns of the South. The cover pic of Lee
holding and AK-47 is magnificent.

471 Fluffy I am thrilled that DJT pulled out of that sucker. The world was just THAT close to having us give them all our money in the name of climate change. President Trump snatched us out of the jaws of the globalists.

that reminds me. must pray for his safety ...

WTF? Over what?

And don't they know "impeached" doesn't mean sh*t? Their favorite President Clinton was impeached and still served out his term.

483 What makes you think that Andrew Cuomo cares? For that matter, what makes you think that Paul Ryan or Mitch McConnell or Bill DeBlasio care?

They have theirs. The End.

All they care about is keeping theirs. Cuomo loves this. He'll be able to blame Trump for it, and the dog whistle will work like it always does. YES! YES! THIS IS TRUMP'S AMERICA!

Maybe he'll blame DeBlasio, since he hates him. It really depends upon which way the wind is blowing at that moment.

But "care?" Are you crazy? Why would Cuomo care about the people of New York? He doesn't even LIKE the people of New York.

Now, look at "our" leaders. In 12 months, Ryan and McConnell will be passing legislation like there was no tomorrow. Obamacare, the Wall, and everything else. Why not this year? Because it's not an election year, and the leaders only pretend to care when there is something in it for them. If their own positions are threatened, then they'll do something. Maybe. It really depends upon the back deals, too, which we won't know about.

This year? This year will be drama and kvetching for the media. Next year? Next year, when the lights are on, "leadership" will prevail.

Cuomo. Ryan. McConnell. DeBlasio. They are all the same person.

486 Late to the thread, but if you just look at as sleazy pols (a redundant adjective, to be sure) as buying votes of their clients (the lazy and/or envious) with the money of the productive, the of actions Cuomo, Bloomberg and DeBlasio make perfect sense.

487 Not to defend Cuomo, who is every bit as worthless as that screed indicates, but check the penultimate paragraph. Out of four links, two are purely political ranting, one because Cuomo won't give the proglodytes full control of the legislature, the other because Cuomo won't play nice with DeBolshevik.
Pretty much looks like raw DhimmiKKKrap infighting going on. Expect it to end up with everything being done to change the clique in charge in Albany and nothing done to fix the subways in NYC.

489 67 Fireworks scolds are out in force on the nextdoor app. I've never seen so many pussies in one geographical area. My dog is terrified of fireworks but I'd never lambast people who want to celebrate. Also afraid of thunder so what're we doing about that? Special needs kids (seems like everyone has one) and vets with ptsd won't make it until July 5th according to the hand wringers. Good lord.

State legislatures, city councils, and increasingly, HOAs have the power to ban thunder with a flick of the wrist. Soon you'll be seeing black and white traffic signs at city limits and state lines that will read "NO THUNDER - $10,000 FINE". Government IS God, you see.
