US Shoots Down Syrian Plane

Well, not psyched about being further drawn into the Syrian Civil War, but can't complain too much about the shoot-down itself.

A U.S. strike aircraft shot down a Syrian government fighter jet Sunday shortly after the Syrians bombed U.S.-backed fighters in northern Syria, the Pentagon said in a statement.

The Pentagon said the downing of the aircraft came hours after Syrian loyalist forces attacked U.S.-backed fighters, known as the Syrian Democratic Forces, in the village of Ja'Din, southwest of Raqqa. The rare attack was the first time a U.S. jet has shot down a manned hostile aircraft in more than a decade, and it signaled the United States' sharply intensifying role in Syria's war.

The incident is the fourth time within a month that the U.S. military has attacked pro-Syrian government forces.

Syria claims the jet was attacking ISIS forces, and the US says that's total bullshit.

Russia, which supposedly hacked the election in favor of Donald Trump and has a huge Kompromat File on him they can use to force him to do their bidding, is now threatening to track, and maybe even shoot down, every flying thing in the skies over Syria in response to the US shootdown.

They've also turned off the "deconfliction" hotline which allows US and Russia to make sure we're not shooting at each other.

The country's defence ministry said it would track US-led coalition aircraft with missile systems and military aircraft, but stopped short of saying it would shoot them down.

A hotline set up between Russia and the US to prevent mid-air collisions will also be suspended.

"All kinds of airborne vehicles, including aircraft and UAVs of the international coalition detected to the west of the Euphrates River will be tracked by the Russian SAM systems as air targets," the Russian Defence Ministry said in a statement.

Posted by: Your Decidedly Devious Uncle Palpatine. All Honor & Glory to Kekistan! at June 19, 2017 03:55 PM (TwwWO)

89 As best I can make out from the longer story, the Syrians were trying to bomb the forces that just DEFEATED ISIS. In other words, Syrian planes were supporting ISIS. Why would they do that? Because ISIS makes a convenient foil for Assad to use to stay in power, and he doesn't want to allow a Syrian force that is both against ISIS and against Assad, so he'll try to destroy them even when they are ONLY attacking ISIS and winning.

This is why we can't just "get out" - if we get out, Russia and the Syrians will actually do everything they can to help ISIS stay viable, within limits that they think are acceptable, because they view permanent chaos and calamity for the region as an acceptable way for Assad to remain in power.

If we are serious about defeating ISIS, and we better be, then we have to support those forces in the region that also want to defeat ISIS. And when Assad tries to attack them, we need to bloody his nose.

As far as why it happened now - we're in the position of an off-duty cop who's dropped by the liquor store. You're standing in line, and all of a sudden some punk pulls out a gun and tries to jack the clerk - well you didn't go in there with the intention of messing up the punk, but he just made it your business, and you're not gonna just walk way.. That ain't who you are.

I mean: we find an IS cell in Berlin, hit it hard and fast and wipe them out in the middle of Berlin. If we find a camp in Russia, bomb the crap out of it in Russia. Just hunt them like rats no matter where they hide.

154 The establishment of a Kurdish state (which hacks off the Turks) is the U.S., Israel et al attempt to block the Silk Road (and effect other geopolitical realities) and bull their way into the Astana talks to which they were not invited. (Take into consideration the effect of further US sanctions against Russia which attempt to block the sale of Nat Gas into Europe and substitute US LNG.) The US Marines in Syria attacking Raquaa are blocking the highway the Syrian Army would use to relieve Deir el Ezzor (sic) in the far east of Syria's territory and the Kurdish proxies are used to fight ISIS but also deter the Syrian govt and army from reclaiming territory and fight ISIS directly going from Raqaa to Deir el Ezzor (sic). The US has not declared war on Syria but is directly operating on their soil and claiming justification by going after ISIS. And now Iran has shown it can launch medium range missiles from its own western region. The US does not want a Fatamid Shiite Crescent extending across the Middle East but the previous Administration gave the Iranians just about every resource to become more of a geopolitical issue. Would agree with the 29th comment on this thread.

180 We are there because ISIS is something that is even worse than Al Qaeda, something we should never have allowed to have been created.

ISIS was created and became powerful because Obama pulled out all of the troops that were stabilizing western Iraq, and also because Assad in fact secretly supported their rise, because he saw them as a useful way to take out the more moderate SDF along with the Kurdish Militia. Turkey also wants to destroy the SDF and the Kurdish Militia, because they do not want a strong Kurdistan to be created, because several western provinces of Turkey are heavily Kurdish. (and oppressed by the Turks severely)

If you hadn't noticed, ISIS is organizing attacks on western cities and targets - do you really think they will just quit if we try to be nice to them? OBAMA TRIED THAT ALREADY.

The SDF and the Kurdish Militia are the ONLY forces who are seriously fighting ISIS in Syria. (Assad is NOT) Therefore, at the very least, it is very strongly in our interest to arm and support the SDF and the Kurdish Militia, because they are how ISIS is being defeated.

And that means, when Assad tries to blow up the SDF and Kurdish forces that are trying to attack ISIS, we need to shoot down his planes, and if the Russians try to paint our planes with ground radar, well that's what HARM missiles are for.

This isn't really that complicated, and it's rather amazing to see so-called "conservatives" say "oh yeah, Obama was right, we should just walk away and pretend nothing is happening while we talk a big game."

You @%#$#$$^ !!!

I thought **I** was going to get to be the first to voice approval!

This is AWESOME, a classic case of MAGA! (No, not kidding.) In increasing importance:

(1) I, for one, find great comfort in the fact that our aircraft can actually chase down someone else's aircraft, and blow if out of the sky if we like. I hear it's been something like 18 YEARS since we've been able to PROVE that our uber-expensive, uber-capable military equipment STILL WORKS REALLY WELL.

(2) Shows the world that - unlike for the last 8 years, the US is DEFINITELY NOT a "paper tiger".

(3) The reaction from the Russians - the Big Bad Bear, Mr Putin himself - was PRICELESS. Oohh! They're gonna "track" us - we're SOOOO SCARED!! It's nice to FINALLY see THOSE GUYS be all Big Talk and No Action. MAGA!!!

Syria doesn't even have control of that part of their territory!! If they DID, and were harboring ISIS, that would make them enemies we were at war with. Since the DON'T, it means were cleaning up the cockroaches in THEIR kitchen. They got a lot of NERVE interfering. I'm not sure I'd call Assad's a legitimate government, anyway.

In summary, Trump is wiping out ISIS over there, and isn't f-ing around with any scumbags who try to interfere with it, or endanger our forces and allies. It's very, very MAGA!

272 The Saudi's are never going to be considered "good guys", but they are, in fact, doing a hell of a lot of work these days to support our military and strategic goals in the area, more than they have ever done before. (it's because they're finally scared, of course)

The Great Conflict which is looming, of course, is the final Shia/Sunni knock down/dragout, with the Saudis and the other gulf states being the core of Sunni power, and Iran, of course, being the Shia force.

Iran is not just about the Shiite version of Islam, of course Iran also will always have the dreams of resurrecting Persia, the empire they once had which controlled everything from the Mediterranean to China. They believe that they could have that again, and that only the Great Satan and all of his Little Satans are stopping him. Does it need to be said that a new Persian Empire is NOT going to be a good thing for anyone in the West?

The Saudi's are waging the fight in Yemen against Iran's proxies, who wish to establish an Iranian puppet state near the shipping lanes so that Iran could shut down oil shipments from the Gulf with ship to ship missiles. The Saudis are leading the boycott/encirclement of Qatar, the Gulf State that sold out completely to the Iranians. The Saudis are providing the financing for the Syrian rebels and the Kurds, such as it is, because Assad is allied with Iran. The Saudi's have even secretly allied themselves with Israel, and they are sharing military tech and information. (which is another reason the Pali's are falling off everyones radar)

So while the Saudi's will never be "good guys", right now they're about as good an ally as we've ever had in the region, and I can't think of anything that we've asked them to do lately that they haven't done for us.

That's my impression too. Sure, we can get involved, but what, exactly, is the goal? We have no interests or connections in Syria - it was a Russian client state forever. No principles, either -
there's no appetite for a secular government in the populace.

We do have some interest in guaranteeing Iraq's borders, because we broke their army (and, frankly, their society). We should do that. But we're already way more involved in Syria than we should be.

Speaking of involvement, I'll bet anyone $5 the real reason we shot that plane down is it was bombing, not our putative friends, but American troops that aren't supposed to be there.
