As regards the earliest cultures the answer is emphatically negative. The blow of the poisonous dart from behind a bush, to murder a woman or a child in their sleep, is not pugnacity. Nor is head-hunting, body-snatching, or killing for food instinctive or natural. -- Bronislaw Malinowski Phi Betta Kappa Address, Harvard University 1936 What? No, not all quotations on the ONT are smart. This one is an example of a pretty fvcking stupid one. But then, it's Harvard, so you shouldn't be surprised. The great questions of the time are not decided by speeches and majority decisions -- that was the error of 1848 and 1849 -- but by iron and blood Otto von Bismarck 1862 The system of private property is the most important guaranty of freedom, not only for those who own property, but scarcely less for those who do not Freidrich August von Hayek The Road To Serfdom 1944 Civil Forfeiture is about as anti-freedom as it gets. The jack-booted thugs of government simply steal stuff from people who can't defend themselves. And look who doesn't like it! As usual, Justice Thomas is spot-on. Of course since he strayed off of the plantation he is vilified by the Left and even soft liberals; people who would normally agree with a Black Supreme Court Justice who is on the side of the little guy. Justice Thomas's Doubts About Civil Forfeiture Accordingly, Thomas strongly signaled that he thinks the long-standing deference to law-enforcement agencies is untenable. "In the absence of this historical practice, the Constitution presumably would require the Court to align its distinct doctrine governing civil forfeiture with its doctrines governing other forms of punitive state action and property deprivation," he surmised. He left unsaid that such a realignment would almost certainly narrow forfeiture's scope. The justice's discomfort with forfeiture has built slowly since his early tenure. In 1993, two years after he joined the Court, he noted in a partial concurrence in U.S. v. James Daniel Good Real Property that he was "disturbed by the breadth of new civil-forfeiture statutes." He and the other justices ruled in favor of the plaintiff, James Good, whose home in Hawaii had been seized by federal marshals without notice or legal proceedings almost five years after he'd completed a prison sentence for drug possession. I asked Garrett for some input on great covers. That was humbling. Here is a wild one that he suggested. Richard Feynman was no Al Gore, but he had the rarest of minds; he could see through bullshit better than most. I wonder what Feynman would have thought of today's enviro-religious mania: AGW. Here's a hint, courtesy of Andrew Branca's Law Of Self Defense blog: Richard Feynman "Cargo Cult Science" Just read it....the linked YouTube video is someone reading the speech, and he has an irritating voice. But even today I meet lots of people who sooner or later get me into a conversation about UFOS, or astrology, or some form of mysticism, expanded consciousness, new types of awareness, ESP, and so forth. And I've concluded that it's not a scientific world. By the way, Branca's book is excellent, and well worth a read if you carry or even have weapons in the home for self defense. From Andrew: In terms of a discount on the book for the moron community, we have a moron-specific 20% discount on the book permanently in place: just use discount code AOSHQ at checkout. That discount code never expires, but it applies only to the book. Oh...for Fvck's sake! I get that there are going to be fashion trends that don't please me. Hell, most of the 1970s-...uh....until now....are awful in some respects. I freely admit that I am a fuddy-duddy, and anything other than a button-down and a pair of khakis is too God-damned hipster for me. But at some point, the fashion designers of the world lost their minds and started doing this kind of crap. Fine; blur the lines between man and woman. I get it. You want to be provocative. But there is an aesthetic that must be respected. Call it sexy, call it interesting, call it whatever you want. But when it looks like you are an asshole and just doing it for its shock value, it's gone too far. As for the model? Dude...either shave your legs or go to the gym! I really like punk...at least some of it. But the idea that it was the vanguard of some socio-political change is laughable. It's music. Not philosophy. Paul McCartney, David Bowie, Cliff Richard And More Explain Punk In 1979 At first it was shocking, because until then you'd known the status quo. It hoped to be shocking and in some ways it was. But the thing was that the music was great and suddenly realised, after a day or two of horror - [ADOPTS POSH VOICE] 'My God! What's going on! What's happening to our England?!' - that these guys were just shaking it up and it needed shaking up...

Queering the Census
Civil liberties to the Left, much like democracy, is but a tram ride to travel upon until they arrive at their immanetized eschaton destination. No clearer example of that can be seen then when it comes to sexuality and gender, specifically the demand that the government breaches privacy to get involved "in the bedroom": To wit, the demand by some, including Sens. Tom Carper (D-DE) and Kamala Harris (D-CA) who want the Federal government to query every person in the country about their sexual orientation and gender identity (i.e. "SOGI"). http://politicalhat.com/?p=13509 Posted by: The Political Hat at June 20, 2017 09:53 PM (vBeA5) 3

William Baude, blogging at The Volokh Conspiracy, has another departure from orthodoxy by Thomas.
'In an appropriate case, we should reconsider our qualified immunity jurisprudence' But along the way, the decision provoked some promising skepticism from Justice Clarence Thomas about the doctrine of qualified immunity (a doctrine that protects government officials from liability for unconstitutional conduct and which I've previously posted about here and here). Good point re Punk. Always rolled my eyes when listening to the people banging on about it being a "political" thing. YOU and your band might be injecting politics into it, but that's not what is was about. It's just rock n roll. The only philosophy that mattered was the unleashing of the garage bands, not playing by the music industry's rules and rocking out some good tunes. And just because it seems like a forgotten concept . . .
If you ask me to name the proudest distinction of Americans, I would choose - because it contains all the others - the fact that they were the people who created the phrase "to make money." No other language or nation had ever used these words before; men had always thought of wealth as a static quantity - to be seized, begged, inherited, shared, looted or obtained as a favor. Americans were the first to understand that wealth has to be created. -Ayn Rand Posted by: Locke Common at June 20, 2017 10:09 PM (zSXXo) 32

Civil Forfeiture is about as anti-freedom as it gets.
It's not the civil forfeiture, itself, that is the problem. It's that it can be done without any trial or conviction. And it can be done and then the victim is slapped with a gag order not to talk to anyone about it. It's insane. And the related insanities of "legal fictions" that let government "arrest property" should be absolutely wiped off the face of the Earth, along with everyone who thought of this ridiculous crap and everyone who supports this idiocy. And my cash is my cash. No one has any right to know if take $30,000 out of my bank account. Period. There is nothing to discuss about this. My money is my money and I have the right to have my money however I want to have it. Willowed
I think any state that declares bankruptcy and wants the other 49 states to bail it out needs to be sent back to Territorial status. Yes Territorial Status. No US Senators or Representatives. The US President appoints a Territorial Governor. They cannot be readmitted as a state until they have balanced their state books for five years, and paid back everything they were lent by other states or the feds. You elected the idiots that screwed your state up, you own it. You get treated like little children until you learn to act like adults. You do not get a say in running the federal government until you can run your own damned state responsibly. Will it hurt? Damned straight! Stupid should hurt. Irresponsible should hurt. Electing crooks should hurt. How many Illinois Governors are in jail? How many Representatives are in jail? IL is corrupt. That is why it is broke. Should we petition our Congressmen to make this law? Getting rid of two Senators and a bunch of Reps would increase their power, wouldn't it? More power, more "Donations." From the last thread, someone mentioned Illinois going bankrupt. I remember reading an article about this: There is no legal mechanism for bankruptcy of a state. It has to do with the doctrine that states are still sovereign under the federal system. There is a federal system for municipal bankruptcies, called Chapter 9. CBD, you make one error in fashion. You think a man should dress like a man (Comfortable, sensible- depending on his work that could be jeans and a t-shirt or a three piece.) This is attractive to women (shows the man is sensible, probably holds down a job.) I think almost all fashion is about being attractive to the preferred partner- it's biology. These dudes are dressing to collect a paycheck. Do you think that poor bastard model would be caught dead in that if he was not getting a bit hungry? It's the designers who are making these clothes to appear attractive to their preferred mates: gay liberal assholes (no pun intended.) Posted by: Piercello, on the road at June 20, 2017 10:24 PM (WbaUv) "Hunker Down" is a rather much abused turn of phrase, made infamous by the Harris County Judge in countless hurricane commercials over the years. Being a sailor, I batten the hatches, thus avoiding either of the unpleasant hunkerings. But you can be damn sure, I'll also park the F-150 up on the 3rd deck of the Frost Bank parking garage, just to be sure. The ground the house sits on here, is 5 ft. above sea level. The floor is 4ft. 9in. above said ground. Had three inches of water in the house, after Hurricane Ike. This storm doesn't seem to have that kind of potential, thankfully. "Because not only were the inside pages of the book upside down compared to the front and back covers, but the pages themselves were all reversed."
I once bought a book that was completely printed upside down and reversed, including the covers. Completely unreadable. Exchanged it for one that was printed right-side up. The clerk must not have been as much of a reader as I, because he didn't see the problem, but he made the exchange anyway. Posted by: Bacon Jeff at June 20, 2017 10:32 PM (3JQ/p) 184

It's like a steady diet of honeycomb. At first, it's sweet. But after a while.... it's almost nauseatingly sweet. Especially after years of sour. I'm sure my "tiredness" will be pepped back up after this weekend's family gathering for Mom's bday. Many very strong and opposed opinions will be in attendance - and even though Mom's Law is no political arguments in her house... heh... some folks cannot contain themselves. YKWIM. Sure, they get reputations and some can guarantee some box office ... but actual skilled actors are the easiest thing in the world to find. After all, most of the acting performances in a movie come down to the directors and how good they are, anyway. "How many Illinois Governors are in jail?"
If you mean "right now", only one, Rod R. "Hairdo" Blagojevich (D). If you mean "ever", I count four: Otto Kerner (D), Dan Walker (D), George Ryan (R) and the abovementioned Blago. (Though you might want to give Walker a Roger Maris style asterisk, because he went to jail long after he was OUT of office for stuff that wasn't related to his time in office.) Finally, in the "really should have gone to jail but didn't" category is Len Small (R), a two-term guv back in the Roaring 20s era who is regarded by some as the all time most corrupt IL governor. He actually was indicted and put on trial for bribery and other stuff while in office, but the jury acquitted him. Posted by: Secret Square at June 20, 2017 10:43 PM (9WuX0) 256

I recently received a phone call from a secretary who called to tell me she was sending me an email.
I'm not making this up. Unfortunately. Posted by: Deplorable Jay Guevara -------- I received a call from 'The President's Office' at Intuit. I had written a letter explaining that I was unhappy when they dropped support for Win 98. This was quite a while ago, obviously. First, the caller "couldn't find my email". I explained that would be because it was an actual letter...on paper. She went away for a while looking for the letter. When she found it, she said "I see that you are unhappy that we dropped Win 98 support". "Yes", I replied. "Well", she said, "it's true that we no longer support Win 98". Then...a period of silence. "Uh", sez I, "can you tell me why we are having this conversation?" "Well", she says, "we're very concerned about customer satisfaction." *click* Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at June 20, 2017 10:46 PM (hgNhY) 273

Ossoff didn't matter.
And then the Left said he mattered, and many of their dollars went to Ossoff, because the Left does not spend their dollars wisely, but only emotionally. And then he mattered, because they wanted the Narrative, and had made him so pumped with dollars that he started to swell up and matter. And then he failed, and the Narrative was still in ruins, and the CNN will talk about other things, to keep the Narrative alive. It is a good day. When Li'l Kim keeps throwing missiles around, I can't help but wonder about the budget. At some point, even Nork money should run out, along with food. My personal favorite actors are Sam Rockwell, Greg Kinnear, Heath Ledger (short as his career was), Brad Pitt (yes, I said it)...hell even Bradley Cooper. Life, liberty, and property -- That was the alternative proposal to 'pursuit of happiness' in the DoI. Several other nations do use some version of 'property' in their charters, and the words do appear in our Constitution under the 5th and 14th Amendments:
An alternative phrase "life, liberty, and property", is found in the Declaration of Colonial Rights, a resolution of the First Continental Congress. The Fifth Amendment and Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution declare that governments cannot deprive any person of "life, liberty, or property" without due process of law. So yes, property is intimately associated with pursuit of happiness as a natural right. Thanks for the ONT, CBD. Posted by: GnuBreed at June 21, 2017 12:00 AM (6jaju) 581

the question about ethnicity is only on the 'long form', and those are now done by picking a few addresses each months in every county in the USA.
Until 2010, about one of five people got the long form; no one did in 2010, but since then some addresses have been selected each month in each county. "American" is an option for the ethnicity question on the long form. It won't be asked in the Census 2020 forms Posted by: name, rank, cereal # at June 21, 2017 12:28 AM (ihtYN) 633

Officially, at 100% charge, a 12V battery should be 12.7V (it varies with temperature a bit, decreasing with temperature IIRC). At 50% charge, it will be about 12.3V
So, 48.8V would be about 12.2V per 12V battery. Your voltmeter needs to be accurate enough to depend on the 3rd decimal, though. And make sure the "surface charge" is bled off. I'd bypass the control mechanism and see how much current it pulled on a regular charger. Posted by: publius, the Persistent Poperin Pear at June 21, 2017 12:40 AM (8O3HH) 655

In the early 50's it would have been an effective ground attack weapon, as long as you weren't up against jets, or had to land on a carrier. The "A"-26 Invader never got obsolete. Kudos to Bono and U2 for keepin' it classy, offering well-wishes to Steve Scalise and the other shooting victims, and stating that folks of all political persuasions are welcome at their concerts. How refreshing.
While my fandom faded decades ago, I was one of the very first U2 fans in North America. Growing up in Buffalo, we could pull in CFNY 102.1 out of Toronto. CFNY was well-known for playing the very latest British imports, and one night I heard this song called "I Will Follow." I was obsessed with the song so the very next day I went down to the nearest Record Theater (their last store, sadly, closed this very week) and searched through the import bins for a band I thought was called "You Too" based on the DJ's announcement. After coming up empty, I asked the clerk if he had ever heard of "You Too" and could he get me a copy? The clerk called around and found one lone copy in the import bins at another Record Theater, told me "it's 'U2'" and had it delivered to the local store and held for me at the front counter. Imagine a time when a U2 album was so rare you had to jump through those kinds of hoops! I still have that import copy of their debut album, "Boy." And "I Will Follow" if it is the one I am thinking is a great song!
The chiming guitar drew me in! I'd never heard anything like it before. There's this sort of WNY local rock urban legend regarding U2. On their first US tour, I believe it was 1979, U2 was booked into a small live music venue south of Buffalo. Long gone (I don't think the building even exists anymore) but one of those sort of legendary local places. The venue infamously mis-advertised them as "V2." Long ago, I read a funny interview with the venue's former manager, who said that over the years, upon learning that he had managed the place, hundreds and hundreds of people have claimed to have attended that show. He said he would just nod politely but he knew that 99.9% of them were full of shit because there was a major snowstorm that night, the band was completely unknown, and the venue didn't even get their name right so there were no more than 25 people in the joint that night, mostly regulars, and he personally knew most of them. I myself have spoken with many folks over the years who claim to have attended the famous "V2" show. Posted by: WhatWhatWhat? at June 21, 2017 05:21 AM (ul9CR) 754
Justice Thomas' forfeiture views are consistent with his eminent domain views in "Kelo" (they should have called it "kilo" because the Court was obviously high on the most addicting drug of all: power).
A Constitutional Giant in the Land of Lilliput: "Long ago, William Blackstone wrote that "the law of the land... postpones even public necessity to the sacred and inviolable rights of private property," The Framers embodied that principle in the Constitution, allowing the government to take property not for "public necessity," but instead for "public use." Defying this understanding, the Court replaces the Public Use Clause with a Public Purpose Clause (or perhaps the "Diverse and Always Evolving Needs of Society" Clause), a restriction that is satisfied, the Court instructs, so long as the purpose is "legitimate" and the means "not irrational". This deferential shift in phraseology enables the Court to hold, against all common sense, that a costly urban-renewal project whose stated purpose is a vague promise of new jobs and increased tax revenue, but which is also suspiciously agreeable to the Pfizer Corporation, is for a "public use." I cannot agree. If such "economic development" takings are for a "public use," any taking is, and the Court has erased the Public Use Clause from our Constitution, as Justice O'Connor powerfully argues in dissent. I do not believe that this Court can eliminate liberties expressly enumerated in the Constitution and therefore join her dissenting opinion. Regrettably, however, the Court's error runs deeper than this. Today's decision is simply the latest in a string of our cases construing the Public Use Clause to be a virtual nullity, without the slightest nod to its original meaning. In my view, the Public Use Clause, originally understood, is a meaningful limit on the government's eminent domain power. Our cases have strayed from the Clause's original meaning, and I would reconsider them. The Court has elsewhere recognized "the overriding respect for the sanctity of the home that has been embedded in our traditions since the origins of the Republic," when the issue is only whether the government may search a home. Yet today the Court tells us that we are not to "second-guess the City's considered judgments," when the issue is, instead, whether the government may take the infinitely more intrusive step of tearing down petitioners' homes. Something has gone seriously awry with this Court's interpretation of the Constitution. Though citizens are safe from the government in their homes, the homes themselves are not. Once one accepts, as the Court at least nominally does, that the Public Use Clause is a limit on the eminent domain power of the Federal Government and the States, there is no justification for the almost complete deference it grants to legislatures as to what satisfies it. When faced with a clash of constitutional principle and a line of unreasoned cases wholly divorced from the text, history, and structure of our founding document, we should not hesitate to resolve the tension in favor of the Constitution's original meaning. For the reasons I have given, and for the reasons given in Justice O'Connor's dissent, the conflict of principle raised by this boundless use of the eminent domain power should be resolved in petitioners' favor. I would reverse the judgment of the Connecticut Supreme Court."....... As Reagan said, "You can't be for big government, big taxes, and big bureaucracy and still be for the little guy." Or Big Law, either. Liberal Judicial Activism is great--if you're just tired of freedom and self-government and you simply wish to be told what to do. Or if you just want to short-circuit the rules so that you always win. But for real Americans, its the kind of arrogant authoritarianism that already led us to rebel once in 1776. We don't need another Revolution--we need the one we already had. Posted by: The Gipper Lives at June 21, 2017 05:23 AM (Ndje9) 755

Have they done overtly political stuff? I lost touch with them around the time of Achtung Baby. A relative gave me a bunch of their later CD's and I probably listened to those once or twice. Just the other day their bassist apparently said something moonbattish iirc, and maybe it was in response to that kerfuffle, but Bono stated from the stage: "Whoever you voted for, you are welcome here. We will find common ground." So, no Roger Waters-styled assaults on Republicans at U2 shows. Posted by: WhatWhatWhat? at June 21, 2017 05:31 AM (ul9CR) 759

Back in those days I had this great old Supro tube amp (same make and model that Jimmy Page used on the first Zep album) with the wickedest reverb I've ever heard on a guitar amp, period. I could play that chiming, reverb-drenched "I Will Follow" riff perfectly. I kept playing the record for my bandmates, then demonstrating how perfectly I could play it, but they weren't interested. We were a "heavy" band, covering lots of Sabbath, Priest, Rush and the like and they were always suspicious of my "new-wave" leanings. It frustrated me that I could nail that sound but the guys vetoed the song.

I guess the ADHDNC is off chasing new squirrels this morning after last night's referendum on Trump laughed in their face?

Imagine how much a GOOD GOP candidate would have won by.
Catch her victory speech? A laundry list of local supporters! Yawn. Just awful. Posted by: mnw at June 21, 2017 06:51 AM (a36X1) 803
But is it the first day of summer, the day that summer arrives, or the first full day of summer?

Posted by: Frank Costanza at June 21, 2017 06:49 AM (HTdUD) I'm guessing that 'hen' is a transgender lesbian. The hen is having sex with Ambiguity. Posted by: RickZ at June 21, 2017 06:53 AM (L1/KB) 806

So now we have "Ossoff 2017: This Time, It's Personal!" to look forward to? Posted by: Mary Poppins' Practically Perfect Piercing at June 21, 2017 06:54 AM (X6fMO) 807
First thing I heard on the radio this AM: Handel's Music for the Royal Fireworks.
Suck it, lefties! Posted by: fluffy Given all the liberal tears, Water Music would be more appropriate. Posted by: Steve and Cold Bear at June 21, 2017 06:55 AM (xAvrH) 808

So now we have "Ossoff 2017: This Time, It's Personal!" to look forward to? Plus, I have a map to show me where my district is at!! Posted by: Bruce at June 21, 2017 06:55 AM (8ikIW) 809

Posted by: Mary Poppins' Practically Perfect Piercing at June 21, 2017 06:54 AM (X6fMO) Gives Ossoff plenty of time to move into the district. If he doesn't move and still runs, he'll be burnt offerings to Trump. Posted by: RickZ at June 21, 2017 06:56 AM (L1/KB) 810
Well PDT is up and tweeting this fine morning. Gloating a bit over Handel's win. I have to say it's comforting to know he's already up and working for the country while I'm just stretching my arms and thinking about that cup of coffee.

Ossoff lost in Atlanta. Louisville lost in Omaha.

I would've donated more if he were named Mike R. Ossoff.

Senate is doing a hearing about free speech on campuses. Ted Cruz gave a very good opening speech:

Why would the Dems run Ossoff again? It would be stupid to run a bad candidate again and again, expecting something different to happen.

"GOOD GOP candidate would have won by"
All the good candidates are looking to move up. I just want all the offices filled with adequate candidates that are thankful for their positions and vote the way the people who elected them tell them to. Remember Thad McCotter. Different state but I think Christine O'Donnell would have been a better Congressman but she didn't get a chance. Thad was interesting, articulate, ambitious, ugly, and incompetent. Posted by: Mudd at June 21, 2017 07:09 AM (cfHE9) 822
Gutfeld will never catch the big break till he gets Christine O'Donnell to lift the curse she put on him.

The pictures on this site are way down from the past. It would behoove Ace to force the posters to do the kind of important work Morons need from them. For instance, what's needed is a thoroughly illustrated, point-by-point, comparison of Gail Gadot to Lynda Carter.
