I always thought that when the fiscal situation got dire enough, it would be enough of a slow-moving train (bond yields start to increase, watch lists, etc.) that California would be able to forestall bankruptcy. It really IS useful to have the distraction while a lot of real work continues under the radar. It would be nice to have the Senate confirm some appointees, and the Administration appoint more appointees. I hope someone is working on that. I also have been told that the Afghanistan strategy is on hold while dealing with Russia-gate.

Because of being stuck in a small town in Calif. taking care of my 88 year old Mom, I can't travel like I once did for contract work... which of course, means less contract work.

Then for just about any permanent job, I'm competing with the H1B crowd... as I live near Sillycone Valley... (like the UC Merced Job I had an inside track on, until Janet Napolitano outsourced the IT jobs...)...

I see all these ads for jobs and it's all "10 years in Y specific field."
And I'm like, "come the fuck on--you know damned good and well that anyone at that level already has a damned good job and sure as shit ain't looking to start out at the bottom of your outfit."
But, they'll kick my resume out just the same. Hell, I got one rejection 2 fucking minutes after I applied--and I met all the basic requirements they'd listed. Assholes.
And I'm still pissed the last round of interviews gave the job to the guy with 5 years less experience--and not even in the same field!

It reminds me of the Austin woman we talked about a few years ago here at the HQ who was one of many homeowners in that city who was angry at having to pay taxes for all the crap she'd voted to fund over the years. This is the quote, from back in 2014 (http://tinyurl.com/yb8mpuxv):

If you become an expert on a cutting edge technology, you have about 5 years to make money off it... before its obsolete.... before enough foreigners invade the market and a new technology is more cutting edge... so you are forced to go become an expert in the NEW technology...
I've worked at the cutting edge of technology for 38 Years.... truthfully.... I'm just tired of the rat race...

He's getting old. He's not as fast as he was when he used to chase deer all the time. But nice to see him try. Fawns notwithstanding. Never sure if he's playing or hunting.
Was afraid he'd come back all bloodied, either with a fawn leg in his jaws (like the jackrabbit leg he brought us once) or maybe a dislocated jaw from a defensive mama doe kick.
After a while, he came back, no worse for wear. Good boy.

Unemployment gaps are filled by saying you were self employed. Painted house, home repair, freelance computer work,, tutoring... anything that sounds feasible for your skills and background. They never check that out but just in case have one or two friends to cover for you: "Why yes, he tutored my son in math. He was great!" Even if 100% BS it is better that saying you were unemployed for any length of time.

Get the Certs... get qual'd and then really dig into the tech for about a year or so...
THEN write manuals about it... and sell them...
I actually wrote technical docs and procedures that Microsoft used... System Management Server stuff... made REALLY good money those years...
You just need to understand the cycle, and be planning for that 5 year or so timeline.... so you have a strategy in place for that next time it hits... so you are prepared...

No need to worry. Once she's "in the Army now" all that non-sense about disrespecting the Commander-in-Chief becomes an offense against the UCMJ and the CO will have a field day with Article 15/Non Judicial Punishment (NJP) and there are a plethora of articles within the UCMJ that can be utilized to address the issue. All of us that have served or will serve have to sign an inordinate amount of paperwork saying we understand this and that and one of those if abide by the Uniform Code of Military Justice... She'll either learn quickly or have enough NJP's to be awarded an OTH (Other-than-Honorable) for a pattern of misconduct and for the good of the service so that she can go back home and tell everyone how Uncle Sam and big Army gave her the green weenie...
