"Iron Man" Full-Body Powered Armor for Infantry Proceeding

Wow.

The part they're having the most problem with turns out to be the biggest challenge for Tony Stark, too -- the power for the power suit. And of course there's no such thing as "the ARC reactor." (Although later the "ARC" name was used for a hypothetical, yet-unbuilt Affordable Robust Compact fusion reactor.)

One partial solution I'm pretty sure they'll get to eventually: Build a stronger version of this freaky scary robot "dog" that can carry a huge battery on it. Maybe even a pebble-bed fission reactor. The suit can get charged off the reactor as he walks, unplug from the power-dog when doing combat-oriented stuff, and of course plug in to charge its smaller backpack battery during pure downtime.

Imagine that freaky-looking robot dog walking around with a reactor and a power-cord connected to the "Iron Man" powered armor (depicted below).

Shit, most people would just flee in terror.

Yeah power source will always be a problem unless you use the soldier as part of the energy system to power the armor.

24 The conference room was empty, except for a small pile of papers on the table in front of one chair. Was I too early for our meeting? Not according to the clock on the wall.

As I walked into the room, suddenly I was tackled from behind! My assailant took me down to the ground and quickly had me in a headlock. He was rubbing one hand on my hair and laughing!

Almost without thinking, using my superior size, I rolled on my back and slammed him into the carpet. I could feel his hands loosen from my neck and I flipped over, straddling his chest.

"Okay, you got me, Jimmy, ha ha!" he said. "But I had you there for a while!"

I let him up and we both shook hands and hugged.

"Okay, Jimmy, I have to get down to business." Bob Mueller tucked his shirt in and took his seat at the table as we both caught our breath. He looked down at a piece of paper.

"My appointment as Special Counsel," he said. "I can go after three things. First, I'm supposed to continue the investigation you've been doing. Second, I'm supposed to search for any links between Trump and his crew and Russia. And third, anything else I happen to stumble upon."

"So I need to know, Jimmy," he continued, "what is the investigation you've been doing? Were you investigating the hack of the DNC server?"

"Oh no, not that. I didn't even look at the server. Whatever the DNC says about it is good enough for me."

"Were you investigating the hack of Podesta's emails?"

"Podesta's emails? Oh no, I don't want to go anywhere near Podesta's emails. Yuck. I've got children myself, Bob!"

"Were you investigating leaks of classified information? Did you start with Yates, Clapper, that bunch?"

"Oh no, not that. I'm sure that whatever they may have done, they had good reason for doing so."

"So was it the unmasking?" he asked. "Were you looking into Obama people using our spying apparatus to keep tabs on Trump during the campaign?"

"Oh no, not that. Look, if we can't trust President Obama and his team, who can we trust?"

"So what was it, Jimmy? What have you been investigating?"

"It's the tramps, Bobby. I just can't get my mind off the tramps.

"What tramps?"

"The three tramps. They were picked up for vagrancy by Dallas police after the assassination. I mean, they didn't really look like tramps. What were they doing near Dealey Plaza? Let's face it, Bob, they can only be one of three things: CIA, Mafia or KGB."

Mueller looked at me for a long second and then looked down at his watch. "You know what, Jimmy. Let's knock off for the day. How about a beer? You got time for a beer before heading home? So how's the wife? What are the kids up to?"

62 The interesting problem for modern western militaries isn't the quality of the equipment versus their opponents...it is their willingness to use it.

The America of 1945 could have defeated ISIS in short order. It would not have been "pretty", but militaries victories never will be.

Something like this suit is actually designed to minimize collateral damage. Soldiers in powered armor that is immune to small arms fire could neutralize their opponents with less firepower - presumably even small arms fire of their own if not melee weapons (if the durability of the armor in the attached cartoon is presumed to be realistic).

This is not an effective use of our military budget.

How many dumb bombs and a B-52 can you get for the price of a powered armor suit?

Think about that for asymmetrical warfare.

Or dropping a shit ton of pork products on Mecca.

You know, during the hadj 'cause they're hungry out there in the desert.

So, drone technology as a delivery vehicle for biological warfare is coming.

And the idea of custom viruses has been around since Syphon Filter.

A dart to deliver the virus. Not even while flying. Just land it in a discreet spot and shoot.

Or even a willing "suicide bomber" to carry it.

Think about that when you think of what civil war in the US will look like.

Shooting the enemy with guns will be outdated in the next major war.

The reason personal armor has gone out of style, for the most part, since the middle ages is that it is the offensive potential of weapons is greater then what a reasonable defense can supply.

At least to this point a soldier is better off camouflaged and in a fox hole then wearing armor in the open because a well aimed bullet will still incapacitate or kill said soldier irrespective of said armor, let alone an RPG or rocket.

It is possible to improve the armor, but the human body is a fragile thing and you have to stop projectiles AND the impact force of them.

Doesn't he deserve better? Look, if you think this is about overdue fines and missing books, you'd better think again. This is about that kid's right to read a book without getting his mind warped. In the Dune prequels, the robots come up with an innovative solution to the personal shields the humans have.

The personal shield stops energy weapons and anything that moves over a low speed (like bullets).

It is designed to let in slow moving things...like air...so the human can breathe without carrying a contained air supply.

So the robots design little insect like things that can fly through the shield at 5 mph or whatever and then literally rip the human soldier apart.

Defenses are harder to design, generally, then offensive counters.

Posted by: 18-1 at May 23, 2017 05:11 PM (eSx+E)

199 The "Neon Genesis Evangelion" anime featured giant walking armor units (called "Evas") that needed to be plugged in. They had giant high-amperage power cables (presumably with a really strong power source like an entire dedicated nuclear reactor). If the cord was disconnected for any reason they could only go for about two minutes on stored power.

If you watch Evangelion a whole bunch of really weird stuff comes into play, but that basic setup was pretty interesting. Powerful beings known as "Angels" would attack Tokyo-3, and the Evas would be deployed to fight them. Since they knew the Angels attacked a specific location, the requirement to tether the Evas did not render them impractical.

Robert A. Heinlein's Starship Troopers (too bad nobody ever made a movie from it) featured powered armor that doesn't violate the known laws of physics. Each suit weighed about as much as a car, and couldn't do unrealistic things like fly rings around F-35 fighter jets (*cough* Iron Man *cough*). To call them "realistic" requires faith that science will invent synthetic muscles and a compact high-density power source of some sort, but these are pretty plausible. And Heinlein described a heads-up display that involved machines and screens behind the operator's head, with mirrors to get the views in front; with computers and flat-panel displays, a much better user interface would be possible. He described little blurry RADAR display dots labelled with Morse-code strings of dots and dashes; in reality there would be color-coded icons. He described controls involving biting down on pressure plates, tossing the head, etc. and in reality there would be voice commands and possibly eye tracking UI.

But even more probably we will see drones, where the human operator will be selflessly brave because he/she is not risking actual life and limb. I read a science fiction story describing something like the Talos suit, but remote-operated, and at the end of the story the operator felt like an inadequate man and dropped out of his job and volunteered to be actual in-person infantry. "This is an incredibly dumb ending" I thought. His training is all wrong for in-person infantry; in the story he was really good at playing the "video game" that drove the drone around, but would he be any good with his own body? If I were in the Army and trained to drive drones like this, I'd not be in a hurry to put myself where I could get limbs blown off.

It works out to this from a space based transmitter. You need a 10km diameter receiving antenna, and you can operate at 750MW. The power density in the target it still low enough to be safe for humans. You would get about the same level as a cell phone, believe it or not.

The 10km diameter and 750MW per was the result of various tradeoffs and all that.

Actually, this sort of thing happened a lot.

Some allied local ruler gets overthrown by his enemies and the Brits (or Romans or whoever) get there afterwards.

You run the same program against the enemy if they are holed up in a village/fort/etc formerly held by your ally or not. It is cheaper to annihilate the enemy and help your remaining allies rebuild...or just buy new allies....then to worry about collateral damage.

Do this a few times and your enemies stop trying to hold territory when you show up anyway.

Some people think you can just send a machine instead of a man, other people say "then why the fudge am I sending a machine if I don't want to go?"

If I has X number of dice, what would be the probability of having at least Y number of them be a certain number? More broadly What would the probability of having at least Y number of dice be a certain number or higher.

For example, if I had 12 six-sided dice, what would be the probability that three of the dice would come up five, or alternately, five or six.

Yes cranks and con-men exist. Also honest citizens who would prefer that their brains not be splattered all over the pavement because they told the truth of something they know.

I have wondered why shields haven't made a comeback.
***
Ok, your shield stop small arms fire from going through it. Every bullet still hits with a certain amount of kinetic energy...which will either break your arm, knock the shield our of your hand, or knock you to the ground.

The police have something like this they use when breaking down a door with a shooter inside. The military might use it for something similar as well. In that limited scenario it works ok - all you are trying to do is give your people time to identify where the shooter is so they can deploy against them.

Of course an easier answer is a grenade through the door...for the military at least.

And in the photos of the victorious Houthis examining the littered hulks and the dead Saudi soldiers (well, mercs), the Houthis are often barefoot. That should tell you something right there.

A classic EoJ http://is.gd/yHY1J7

192 I contemplated the natural beauty just outside the window of The Manhole, an upscale "cafe" in the Castro district. A wrapper whirled inside the capricious embrace of a dust devil in the parking lot. A young boy stepped into a windowless panel van, his childlike curiosity at the offered candy taking back through memory's sepia-toned alleys, as the sky outside faded from shale to umber.

Turning back to my computer as I took a leisurely sip of penis, I noticed something in one of the browser windows I had open. No, not Andrew's profile on HIVlounge, "Where the H is for HOTT."

Something dark. Something evil.

It was Ace.

Count states. Probability will be of course the ratio of the number of states with the desired configuration to the total number.

For M n-sided dice, my first attempt would be to imagine that set as an M digit number of base-n. Total number of states is simply n^(M).

Now, figure out a way to count the number of substates of the desired configuration.
