NOT the Gardening Thread: Squirrel! [KT]

Serving your mid-day open thread needs

Los Angeles Basin, 1920: Douglas Fairbanks plays the part of Zorro ("Fox" in Spanish). Zorro will continue for several decades to defend commoners against tyrannical government agents, with flair.

Zorro

Los Angeles Basin, 2017: Government agent defends fox squirrels against gendered, racialized, and speciesist thinking.

zorros.jpg

(Sort of) Zorro-like squirrel

From the link below the photo, a few samples of the horribly prejudiced language describing these squirrels in the popular press. From the Bay Area, no less:

Our native western gray squirrel, an elegant steel-gray creature, won't beg for peanuts in the park and shuns human company. To fill the squirrel gap, various people at various times introduced eastern fox and eastern gray squirrels.

Fox squirrels were most likely brought in for companionship rather than as a food source, despite the long tradition of squirrel cuisine back East. Apart from the classic Brunswick stew of the Southeast, we have a friend whose French Canadian grandmother was renowned for her squirrel-stomach pie (best prepared in the fall, during the nut harvest.) . . .

Why have they been so successful? Eastern fox squirrels produce two litters a year, compared with one for the western gray. They're more tolerant of open areas, including parks and suburbs. And they have a much broader diet, including such improbable items as eucalyptus pods. They'll also raid nests for eggs and young birds.

In the Los Angeles area, the Eastern Fox Squirrel seems to be frequently associated in the press with scattered trash. Far away in Australia, Tim Blair noticed this important academic paper coming out of Cal Poly Pomona:

Californian academic Teresa Lloro-Bidart - official faculty advisor to "Liberal Studies Students with Last Names from Ri-Z" - considers the crucial eastern fox squirrel situation in Los Angeles.

Obviously, since we're talking about garbage-harvesting lower mammals here, this necessarily involves many extremely complicated feminist posthumanist theories . . .

It alarms me that this paper was apparently written by someone from the
College of Education and Integrative Studies.

Given that the shift in tree squirrel demographics is a relatively recent phenomenon, this case presents a unique opportunity to question and re-theorize the ontological given of 'otherness' that manifests, in part, through a politics whereby animal food choices '[come] to stand in for both compliance and resistance to the dominant forces in [human] culture'.

This is someone with responsibility for teaching and advising future educators and integrators? The sentence above makes me want to see public universities plagued by squirrels and other electrical insulation-chewing and garbage-strewing wildlife. Help kids find somewhere better, and cheaper, to learn about life.

If you read J.J. Sefton's links last week, you might have noticed the following passage from Daniel Greenfield:

Snowflakes. Oversensitive. We've all heard those accusations leveled at college students. Are millennial college students really an oversensitive generation? Or are they right to be oversensitive.

Two types of people are sensitive; the entitled and the endangered. It's reasonable to be paranoid about subtle social nuances if you live in a totalitarian state where the wrong word or look will be punished. Where someone is always watching for even the most minor acts of political incorrectness.

College students are afraid. And they should be.

It wasn't long ago that leftist environmentalists were denouncing all human-aided movement of invasive species like the Eastern Fox Squirrel. Who wouldn't be afraid when the intellectual mob in control of your academic environment suddenly moves on to feminist posthumanist support of the squirrel invasion? Who knows what direction posthumanism could take next?

Random forms of subversion against posthumanist feminism

Maybe you could take an almost-college-age kid with you when you Take a Vet Fishing. Some kids could use a break from the classroom and the video screen.

Or perhaps you could keep writing like this:

The North American woods are not inhabited by monkeys but we do have squirrels. And like their primate counterparts; they're very agile, curious and they'll wreck havoc on the artifacts that have come to define modern American life; roof eves, electrical insulation, gardens and birdfeeders. . .

And somehow, I don't think that distracting squirrels with sex is exactly the solution that The Academy currently prefers to address the problem of highly-gendered squirrel journalism.

You could point out that there are black squirrels in the East, too. Natural variants of Eastern Gray Squirrels. Haverford College has a "pristine performance comedy group" called Her Majesty's Black Squirrels. They bring fake speakers to campus, do fake art exhibits, etc. Why not follow suit, without university sponsorship? Could be fun.

I also noticed that in the Spanish translation of the academic abstract which is the primary subject of this post, "the fox squirrels" are "las ardillas zorro". Why not "zorra" or "zorras"? It's complicated. But it might have something to do with slut-shaming female foxes in certain countries. Think of the academic trouble you could stir up by becoming indignant over differences in gendered animal names in various countries.

Bonus language note: Best Spanish translation of accountability.

NOTE:

This thread originated as a tangent from the Gardening Thread. There is also squirrel-related content in the upcoming Gardening Thread. But most of it is more practical, I think. Hope this doesn't confuse anybody.

Obamacare is the fragile ark for stealth socialism, and must be preserved at all costs, so that the switch can be flipped in the future. No doubt Ryan knew about the attempt at the Trump takedown, which is why he's stalled in moving it to the senate.

Have called squirrels "fuzzy-tailed tree rats" since they ate the perch pegs out of a brand new plastic bird feeder to get at the seed. Was told recently that Texas has *actual* tree rats, so I guess that's a thing.

115 Actually, squirrel is full of pitfalls for non-English speakers.

First you have that dreaded English "R" that bunches the tongue at the back of the mouth that is nearly unique to English, followed by that English liquid "L" with only the slightest hint of a schwa masquerading as an "E" separating the two.

Then there is that initial "S" which is not used to start words in most Romance languages, and it is followed by a hard "K" sound, that in some dialects of Spanish and in many French words actually tends suppresses that initial "S" sound.
Now, in Germanic languages S-K does appear, but rarely with the "W" sound following which also does not really appear as a combination in many other languages either.
Anyhow that "W" is separating the dreaded S-K from the horrible R-L, and it is written as an "I".

It results in the tongue madly romping from just behind the teeth, to the back of the mouth, and again rushing forward again to finish things off.

184 Polliwog, it is from French, which gets it, ultimately from Latin

From Wikipedia:

From Middle English squirel, squyrelle, from Anglo-Norman esquirel and Old French escurel (whence French ecureuil), from Vulgar Latin scuriolus, diminutive of scurius, variant of Latin sciurus, from Ancient Greek skíouros.

Displaced native Middle English aquerne, from Old English acweorna.

Aceweorna is a cognate to the German Eichornchen, and the AC and EICH probably come from the same root word as "Oak" and "Acorn"

By the way, I think Skioruos would be an excellent name for a villain's name in a thiller.

Posted by: Soona at May 20, 2017 12:30 PM (

Dogs can't squeeze under the fences or climb shrubs to clear them like cats can. We're actually a lot tougher on stray dogs and those that start forming packs than we are on cats. Cats don't harass livestock or humans walking or biking.

I have a couple of cats that like to hang out on my deck when I'm at work. Gives them a good vantage point to survey the area, and the neighbors have seen them killing everything from birds to frogs in broad daylight.

Night belongs to the coyotes.

195 If the topic is squirrels, this is OT. I have no opinion about them. Although I have heard they are just rats with tails, and more fur. Making them "cuter".

Anyway, I think it is ironic what with the whole Russia/Trump garbage that it is the Democrats, the Left and the media who actually are becoming quite soviet. The removal of statues, the service of the media as propaganda, the white washing or removal of history in the classroom and wherever possible, and the break down of free speech. And, of yeah, the creeping sovietization and over reach of the judiciary. All this, and Barry whispering sweet nothings about post election flexibility to Putin via Medvedev. Bizarre.

Posted by: BignJames at May 20, 2017 12:33 PM (x9c8r)

I've seen coyotes about a mile from my house, but my street is full of fences and only a couple of wooded lots, so not conducive to roaming. OTOH there are a lot of accessible out buildings for cats.

The occasional danger to cats seems to be eagles. We have both bald and golden iirc. They're bigger than the bald eagle. Also cars. Don't know why, but some cats will wait on the shoulder and not cross until the car is damned close.

I've never watched a Zorro movie, but based on the wikipedia description, it sounds more like a predecessor to "Avatar". I think that most elitist libtards today fantasize that they are Zorro.

They subconsciously want there to be a permanent underclass, so a) they can act the part of noble champion of that underclass b) they will be able to (subconsciously) look down upon that group and continue to think of themselves as "special".

230 RE: the romphim.

When I was younger and they were in style, I had one or two rompers. They can be hard to fit, since body shapes are different-- not just because of cleavage, but because of height.

In other words, the measure from shoulder to crotch can vary wildly, depending on the body. I always found them problematic in the crotch area (think wedgie.)

Now, you're going to put those things on guys, knowing that the junk downstairs is different on every guy, and oh yeah, male height can run from 5'2" to 6'5".

Oh yeah. This is a sound fashion concept....

234 I read a story at the Texas Historical site about the progress in introducing wolves back into the Western states. The story talked about the old legends of wolves and that is the reason why people hate wolves.

Years ago there was a fight in the Wyoming Legislature over whether a wolf could be killed and by whom. They decided a rancher could kill a wolf if it was attacking his cattle.

Weeks later a rancher was arrested for killing a wolf. He had come upon it killing his neighbor's cows.
