Overnight Open Thread (13 May 2017)

Ah, I remember the days when it was a heinous crime to use a simple target symbol on a map to show where political battles would be fought ala Sarah Palin. Now those some folks who howled the loudest about that are very silent when actual violence and threats of violence is being brought to bear. Some examples.

Woman allegedly tried to run GOP Congressman off the road over his vote to repeal Obamacare.

Man gets physical with GOP Congressman at town hall.

Republican Congressman and his family receive death threats.

Ah the hypocrisy of the left. Their silence on this means they endorse it.

Artillery

Ah, the importance of artillery on the battlefield. Marines shed light on violent mystery deployment.

Game theory and North Korea. Conventional artillery and nuclear missiles in North Korea. Not sure I buy this type of extortion actually working, but an interesting read on the application of game theory with a real world problem.

Hit Points

I didn't know that D&D didn't include hit points (HP) when it started. The history of hit points.

Playing Bass With A Fidget Spinner

Gluten

I would think that if you're using meth, gluten would be the least of your concerns. Experts warn gluten found in meth could be hazardous to your health.

GDP

Putting America's large $18.6T economy into perspective by comparing US state GDPs to entire countries.

Ozzy Man

USS Indianapolis

I didn't know they still hadn't found her wreckage. Where was the USS Indianapolis when she was sunk?

Kill Switch

Interesting. How a $10.69 purchase may have stopped the global malware attack. I'm sure next time they'll leave that out.

Rape Culture

So is college rape culture fact or fiction? 89% of colleges reported zero campus rapes in 2015 but the media keeps trying to keep the 1 in 3 or 1 in 4 meme going even though that statistic has been debunked.

My favorite stretch of interstate is I-87 in New York, from a little above Saratoga Springs north up to Plattsburgh. When first completed, and called the Adirondack Northway, it was judged one of America's most beautiful roads.

We have Theodore Roosevelt to thank for it, I guess. The state of New York with its forever wild declaration of long ago, has ended up owning all the wild land inside the blue line of the Adirondack Park, and thus traveling I-87, about all one sees is woods and water and mountains.

179 Gluten sensitivity has become a thing (likely overdone).

Celiac disease is the extreme form of that. The gluten causes an immune response that becomes an autoimmune problem in people with a certain genetic predisposition. It affects about 1% of the population.

It causes inflammation of the small intestine, which results in poor nutrient absorption and god-awful diarrhea.

Gluten free diet is required, else they die.

But there's a lot of people, Bill O'Reilly being one, that think there's this intermediate sensitivity to gluten that causes problem. And so gluten-free has become a thing.

Iowa and Nebraska can't be much better.

I used to do the Colorado to Michigan jaunt twice a year back in the early 80's. Back then, the freeway speed limit was still 55 MPH. I didn't dare go over 60.

Iowa was awful, Nebraska much better. It didn't help that I got familiar enough to know how far I was from this or that place and home in Aspen. Man that was boring. My bong and cassette tape player were my saviors.

257 If you could live anywhere in the US, where would you pick?

I actually did that. Looked at the map and eliminated the west coast due to earthquake (and people). Northwest was eliminated because of missile silos and WWIII if it went nukular, and the upper midwest because of the radioactive plume and all those strategic targets. South East has hurricanes. Southern border is hot, and people, and border jumpers.
Mid latitudes east of Dallas gets tornadoes. NorthEast too many people. Canada - too cold, and what kind of work can you find there. Even went to Alaska - winters too long and too cold, and no work (1990s). Rust belt? You're kidding right? Too many people, too many unemployed people. Northern plains states? Still in that radioactive plume out of the Northwest, and what kinda of work (in the years before fracking).

Outside the US it's even worse.

Did you try a new spark plug? Trite, it is, but little one-lung engines need to have good clean spark plug to start. Not so much surplus voltage from their little magnetos.

I had a Homelite Super Mini saw in the garage that I'd bought at a swap meet in AZ about a year ago. Tried and tried to get it running down there, and the best I could do was to get to run at wide-open throttle with the muffler off altogether. I gave up, put it in a box, and hauled it home.

Two weeks ago, I figured, "Well, tear the damn thing right down. If the problem doesn't reveal itself, put the pieces in the chainsaw parts bin." Anyway, I took its little intake elbow off, and there was the problem: a little stick of black plastic was jammed in the reed valve, holding it open, do the 2-stroke cycle couldn't work properly. Cleared it, put the saw back together, and it runs like a pup. Chain was even sharp.

Denver seemed like it had construction for a long time. Inwould time road trips to coincide with about a 1 or 2 AM arrival to get through it. Now I just avoid it, and interstates, if possible. They had this one weird zig-zag deal, like the roads never quite lined up, it was there for a long time.

349 AOP - As you might imagine, I have reduced it to all of the parts. New fuel filter, new fuel lines, carb disassembled and rebuilt.

It will crank, but runs only for a short time. Either the magneto coil is opening, or the carb has something funny going on in an inaccessible spot. I strongly suspect the carb, though it's been cleaned as well as I can, and all replaceable parts replaced, including the gasket that has the reed valves integrated into it.

I'm not about to toss it out, but I'm spending more time fussing with it than I am cutting. I would simply buy a new carb, but as I said, not available.

Pisser, because it has a recent bar and chain.

392 My Husky 440 Rancher chainsaw runs great.

But it has the worst damn chain tension adjustment mechanism, ever.

Tiny, fine threaded adjustment screw, appears to be about 2mm, very fine threaded.

And to drive that adjustment screw, is an ordinary, straight blade screwdriver slot, intended to be turned by the sparkplug/chain tension screwdriver tool which comes with the saw.

Said tool is a straight taper screwdriver bit. Which means the more torque applied, the more it wants to climb out of the slot.

If they'd at least have provided a parallel sided bit, a.k.a. gunsmith's bit, the adjustment would be easier to manage.

But it still doesn't, and won't, adequately transfer torque necessary to tension the chain, without destroying that straight slot adjustment input.

A chainsaw should not have fine, delicate and fragile primary parts, such as the above.

Yeah, everything seems good. It cranks, runs fine, for about 2 minutes, then acts as though it is fuel starved and abruptly dies. Mixture screws have been optimized, time and again.

It's as though it is vapor-locking, but there is no reason that it should. I can generally get it restarted after 10-15 pulls (pant, pant, curse, curse), but then it only will run very briefly. There may actually be something to my speculation that it is the magneto, but short of replacing it, there's no way of knowing.

Yeah, I'll try and pull a carb number, but I'm not hopeful. Among other things, it's a bugger to work on. All metal case, and extracting the engine is a real PITA.

Well, the disease was identified by doctors for the first time about 2,000 years ago, so I'm not surprised that everyone hasn't heard of it.

By the way, if you *really* want to be annoyed, don't think of having to deal once in a while with someone with allergies, think about being that person, who can't safely eat at restaurants or other people's houses, and who has to deal with, not occasional, but CONSTANT whining from people about how you can't eat like normal people or cause them inconvenience or whatever.

P.S. The last time I was in the hospital for three days, they fucked up *every* meal and the only things I had to eat were a small bag of peanuts and a couple of energy bars someone brought me. The hospital nutritionist even came in at the end of the second day to apologize and then they fucked up the next meal. This is pretty much every interaction with people about food.

P.P.S. Some days I just *wake up* tired of the incessant whining. It's your lucky day!

I've got a fuel injector pump I've got to fix on an old tractor, a 1970 or so Ford 2000. 3 cyl, and it's a CAV rotary type pump.

The front seal on the shaft has gone. The tractor had been sitting out in the shed and I went to start it. The fuel tank was dry. Where did it go, I wondered? It leaks a bit, and there was a little wet spot, but not the 5 gallons or so that was still supposed to be in it.

Well, it took a while to figure it out, but that 5 gallons of fuel was in the damn crankcase. Sitting there, that seal gave up the ghost and there it all ran into the crankcase.

I've got to price things. I going to see how much it will be to rebuild it, but hell, it may be cheaper to just to get a new one.

Looking online, you can get one for $600, more or less depending on who it is.

The last pump I had rebuilt was a 6 cyl Roosa Master, about 15 years ago, and I remember the bill was $800. That was a much bigger and more expensive pump, of course. It did the same thing, but that time when the engine was running. It filled up the crankcase with fuel, while going full blast, until it was blowing the mess out of the breather and I caught it.

455 There are proteins and then there are proteins. Gluten is not an essential or even non-essential amino acid. It's just kind of a glue which makes cooking easier.
Posted by: t-bird at May 13, 2017 10:54 PM (7H/2n)

As an avid bread baker, I'd say it's more than just kind of a glue. It's what makes ciabatta and pugliese and focaccia and Krispy Kremes possible. There's a reason bread is called the "staff of life". Hell, our own Captain Whitebread owes his very existence to gluten

We had friends over for dinner the other night. The wives arranged it. I made pizzas (4) in our Big Green Egg. They arrive at our door and I said "hope you're ready for some pizza." The husband says "Sounds good but I'm on a gluten free diet."

*grumble*

He says gluten affects his arthritis. He's been avoiding gluten for about a month. His wife didn't think it was important to share this info with us, even though my wife told her we were going to have pizza. Ah, well, they're good friends and we had a good time nonetheless. He did have plenty of salad and antipasto.

456 I worked on my little Crosley panel today. Replaced the fan belt. Found one the right size in the barn, it said "fractional horsepower" on it, so I knew it had to be the right one.

Got the little motor started, but it would not keep running. Finally took the carb off and tore it down. One of the brass jets was plugged solid with something, so I cleared it with a piece of tag wire. Blew out all the passages, and washed it with thinners, and it cleaned up real nice. Car now starts and runs as it should.

I did a quick spin up the road to the next driveway on my side, about half a mile, and back. Got it up to about 35 mph (the speedometer works!).

I have a friend who has expressed interest in buying it, and he's due to come here tomorrow afternoon, so i wanted it as ready as it could be.

I also inherited a weed whacker from my dad, and have come very close to doing the same thing on several occasions.

Two years ago I took it to a lawn equipment repair place and they cleaned it and replaced the whatchmacallit and the frangibolt and it worked fine after that. For the rest of the season.

Then last year it worked the first couple times I used it, and then it wouldn't start again. I took it into work and a co-worker got it started somehow.

This year I've only used it a couple of times, and so far so good. But that thing doesn't seem to like me and the feeling is mutual.

That does sound like an exceedingly fiddly and needlessly complicated means of adjusting chain tension. Any saw I have had simply has a slot, containing a square "nut" with a tang to engage a hole in the bar, with a longish fillister-head machine screw threaded into that nut, and the head right next to the bar on the front of the saw. And it's usually a standard screw slot, but it takes little effort to turn it.

494 That does sound like an exceedingly fiddly and needlessly complicated means of adjusting chain tension.

Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at May 14, 2017 12:22 AM (0deF2)

Seems that I'll get it tuned, trued and properly tensioned, then trade it in poste haste for a good Stihl commercial grade saw.

I really only need a 20" bar, but will buy more if it's a right bargain.

Damn shame though. The Husqvarana runs like a sewing machine, otherwise.

Posted by: Bill sometimes Bill formerly from Canada at May 14, 2017 12:20 AM (kTzX1)

I have an old Ryobi weed-whacker I bought years ago as a "refurb" from Princess Auto. It had both electric start from an on-board battery, and a recoil start. Its Nicad battery eventually gave up the ghost, and I duct-taped a small 12 volt gel cell to the wand, and used that for a while. Then the recoil start cratered. Idiots put the recoil start on the drive end of the crankshaft, so you have disassemble the whole machine to get at it. Fixed it once, and it broke again, so I shit-canned the whole recoil mechanism, and just went with the electric.

Two years ago, I thought, maybe I'd buy a new weed-whacker, and got a mid-priced one from Lowes. Got it home, and there were pieces missing, and it would not run. Took it back, got a refund, and I'm still using the old Ryobi. Takes a shot of ether in the carb to start it first time out; then on it starts easily, and idles reliably, too.

514 I looked up the history of Celiac disease. It likely first appeared when humans started cultivating wheat. Of course.

It was first described, and then term "Celiac" or "Coeliac" used, by the famous Greek physcian Atretaeus in the first century AD.

The symptoms he described are classic Celiac disease. He diagnosed the problem as due to a "lack of heat in the stomach". Your stomach wasn't hot enough, see.

They didn't figure out the link with wheat until the 1940s. They had suspected diet before, and tried things with various levels of success.

The finally figured out it was wheat when there was some wheat shortage in Holland. Child mortality from celiac disease dropped dramatically, then rose again once the famine ended and wheat products were available again.

They isolated gluten as the cause a few years later in the early '50s.

It's not so much that gluten is the cause of celiac disease, more it's those with celiac disease have a genetic trait that makes them unable to digest gluten.

Perhaps medical research should be looking for ways to "fix" the coding in afflicted individuals, or else maybe come up with some probiotic that celiac patients could take to help them process gluten. Thinking here of the Lactaid milk for those with lactose intolerance.

542 They actually market some enzyme that is supposed to break down gluten in the gut. This is not a cure for celiac -- it won't work. But it is sold to for "gluten intolerance". I think it's just a way to make money off this gluten free craze.

From what I was reading, gluten (and it's some component of it) is very hard for humans to break down. We've got gut bacteria that can do it.

The problem with celiac disease is a genetic anomaly on some long-winded named thing that has to do with the identification friend or foe of the immune system. It's the "self" signalling system.

With this genetic combination, gluten causes the immune system to start attacking the little villi in the small intestine, destroying them.

In those without the genes, it doesn't do this, although it may cause a milder inflammatory response (this is the basis of gluten insensitivity, it is claimed).

Starting to look like it's another one of those "dormant epigentic activation" things, like 30% of people *could* have it but a smaller subset of them get the right sort of virus to trigger the effect.

Also, it's fairly well-known that raging growth and hormones in children and teens hide the symptoms, but not the damage. You just don't feel bad (yet).

Perhaps medical research should be looking for ways to "fix" the coding in afflicted individuals,

Well, they'll probably do Downs syndrome or cancer first, but yeah.

or else maybe come up with some probiotic that celiac patients could take to help them process gluten. Thinking here of the Lactaid milk for those with lactose intolerance.

Umm, no. But people have sold products like that, they do let you feel less bad while you take a cheese grater to your intestines.

It's an autoimmune disease. Probably easier to recode DNA than to try to fix that with an external chemical.

Part of the problem is the DNA identification is kind of crap. It could be any of several genes, a combination, or none of them, according to studies so far.

Every time they think they've found a cause so far, they find someone with the condition but not the cause.

559 The damned rheumatoid arthritis I've got is an autoimmune disease. There's a genetic component, and some external trigger. If you've got the genes, you won't necessarily get it. But something triggers it, causing your immune system to start attacking a component of cartilage.

563 They actually market some enzyme that is supposed to break down gluten in the gut. This is not a cure for celiac -- it won't work.

It's mathematically impossible, even if you have more enzyme than food. It's not really a proportional response, you don't need much to get through.

With this genetic combination, gluten causes the immune system to start attacking the little villi in the small intestine, destroying them.

Oh, it'll eat holes in the intestine and give you sepsis and cancer.

It's fun stuff.

Almost certainly killed my grandfather, though they never diagnosed it (his intestines were just disintegrating for no known reason, though he ate bread and beer all day long).

569 My idea for the next BD Saints?
In prison is a religious order known as the Sainthood. While small in number, they control the prison, but the arrival of the Saints makes their control very shakey. (They too have been appointed by God to fight evil.)
They protect the three Saints while they heal with the help of the warden.
Dafoe's character actively helps them with a prison break plan.
Because they were severely wounded and their father killed, the brothers question whether they truly have God's support.
At one point, the leader of the Sainthood challanges both of the brothers.
He says to them almost as if in a trance, "Rocco said to never stop, yet you did. Why? Is your faith that weak? Do you doubt the word of God? Is true sacrifice so alien to you?"

Eventually they put the prison break plan into action. Unfortunately it will result in the annihilation of the Sainthood. The leader himslef is killed while securing their freedom. The positive is that their "cause" spreads to multiple cities. "Saints" appear accross America.

It is pretty much a crap show from stem to stern.

They should have never relied that much on CGI, just no.

They should have never let Lucas direct. Just no.

Lucas could provide the story ideas, but not the dialogue. Dear God no.

I cannot even tell if the Hayden guy is a good actor or not, he seems horrible, but there is not much you could do with that dreck even if you did not have George Lucas telling you to say it that way.

If you're going to make a mad dash for your brother's, don't stock up on stuff, help *him* stock up on stuff.

Then you have to get there.

Frankly nobody has any idea what WWIII is going to look like at this point. If it's all-out use-all-the-warheads, then it doesn't matter a *great* deal. If it's regional you probably don't need to prep a ton.

636 good places to start with firearms knowledge, if you skill set is/near 0:

Women on Target (NRA program by and for women) starts at the basic terminology and moves up from there. demystifies everything, and w/o any machismo involved.

i recommend both strongly.

well, technically speaking, your phrasing, in my opinion, requests / requires that I avoid surprising you so as long as you are provided with sufficient but unspecified warning to ensure you are not surprised my obligations are fulfilled.

practically speaking this would require use of phrases such as "hang on," "brace yourself,", "ok here it comes," "this might tickle a little".

however, simply fulfilling the minimum requirements of an agreement is not usually the best way to achieve client satisfaction, we are more of an exceed expectations shop.

657 Appleseed isn't NRA, but they are damn good.

WoT is good, even if you have some experience, as they start at the beginning and explain everything, but as peers, not as "you idiot"...

Resident Evil went to one as a student, and they let me help on the range, especially since we brought a few pistols ammo to go with them.

no pressure, no attitude, but most of the ladies i helped could leave saying they had fired, and enjoyed shooting, all sorts of things they would not have otherwise tried, up to and including, for the adventurous, a 44mag, having started at 22LR, one round at a time.

Back then, evidently, supermarkets and parents liked to instill a work ethic in children by letting them "help" you shop by letting them push around a little cart.

Today, my supermarket has a couple of those scooters for fat, lazy people. For the kids, they have a couple of huge annoying shopping carts that are like little plastic cars for the kids to ride in so that the kids can grow up lazy and use those scooters later in fat, lazy lives.
