Trump: I Was Going to Fire Comey Anyway, Regardless of Rod Rosenstein's Memo

I'm glad this is out of the way:

Rosenstein was apparently angry that it had been whispered or implied that he had "recommended" that Comey be fired, and that he was the main motivating force behind the firing.

Apparently he was angry about the put-the-blame-on-Rosenstein campaign (but see downpost).

Rosenstein's role, I'm thinking, was to write a memo informing Trump whether he had justification or cause for termination of Comey. He did this, I would guess, at Trump's direction, or at Sessions' request (who, if involved at all, probably was just relaying Trump's order).

So Rosenstein researched it and rendered an opinion that yes, Trump could fire Comey, and did have cause to do so.

If he wanted to fire him, that is -- if he wanted to fire him, he had cause.

But that's not the same as Rosenstein himself initiating this or directing it or "recommending" it.

So I'm glad that this shabby, poorly-thought-out decision to suggest that Rosenstein Did It is behind us.

Well, it's not behind us. It will be Maddow's Top Story for three months.

But at least no one will feel compelled to try to support a claim that seemed pretty implausible almost from the beginning.

If this can be called a lie -- I'm not sure it's a "lie," straight-up, but more of a manipulation or insinuation/implication by careful wording -- it's a dumb one. It's like using a buddy as an alibi, telling your wife you were doing Church Work with him on Friday night, when you were really out at a tittybar getting drunk and stanky, without ever asking your buddy if he was cool being your alibi or even telling him you were using him as your alibi.

It's very, very dumb to use Rod Rosenstein as an alibi without even clearing it with him first. That sort of thing results in... well, the current conflagration.

Beyond the dumbness of it, there is also of course the moral question about lying. Or misleading. It's shabby behavior, it's dishonorable, and the excuse that people being lied about by the media have latitude to lie in their own defense is getting really overworked lately. At some point, that dog won't hunt, and that point was a month and a half ago.

There is also the problem that lying is generally taken by people to be a sign of a guilty conscience -- few people lie about things they feel ethically confident about or proud of. It's the things people know they shouldn't do that they lie about.

I had no problem with Trump firing Comey, and I assumed it was all on the up-and-up. But if it were on the up-and-up, why mislead about it? Why misdirect people about the parentage of the firing?

If it's not shameful, why is deception being deployed to hide it?

The only good thing here is that now that Trump has admitted it was his idea, I can say "It was Trump's idea" without being yelled at by a contingent of Trump supporters who often take it upon themselves to be Trump's own Media Narrative Enforcement Brigades.

About Rosenstein threatening to quit if it were not "clarified" that this was not Rosenstein's call: Although there seem to be too many reports that Rosenstein was upset and/or angered by this, there seems to be some doubt about the Blue Checkmark Mafia Media's claims -- luridly retweeted and blogged for many hours today -- that he "threatened to quit" over the incident.

Not true, says Rod Rosenstein himself.

When asked by Sinclair Broadcast Group's Michelle Macaluso about reports that claim otherwise, he stated "no, I'm not quitting."

Macaluso: Did you threaten to quit?

Rosenstein: No.

The Washington Post reported Wednesday night that "Rosenstein threatened to resign after the narrative emerging from the White House on Tuesday evening cast him as a prime mover of the decision to fire Comey," citing an unnamed source close to the White House.

Other reporters on Capitol Hill also stated he was upset at the administration over the matter.

Not sure if one can believe that -- perhaps some personal diplomacy was worked out behind the scenes permitting both parties to have some cover (Trump needing it much more) -- but Rosenstein says he didn't threaten to quit.

A little unsolicited advice for Trump: What made Trump popular among many was the fact that he couldn't be bowed by the stultifying, suffocating politically-correct received-wisdom-of-the-elites phony government/media complex, and would often blurt out unpopular and harsh truths. (Also some unpopular and harsh lies, but let's stick to the truths.)

And also: that he seemed like a brazen enough guy that he didn't lie like other typical Washington politicians. Not necessarily because he was a good man, but just because He Didn't Give a Fuck. And whatever the motive, that's refreshing.

Invigorating. Bracing. Enlivening.

Thrilling, even.

Trump really should get back to that and stop with the dissembling. We've had enough of that.

Lies are so tedious and so 2008-2016. And so... Beta.

Alpha Males aren't supposed to lie, because they don't have to lie. They don't try to get their way through indirect, scheming, feminine methods like deception. They just to straight to the thing they want and do it.

Or at least that's the theory.

If you want to fire a guy, be a man about it, be brazen about it, and just go on TV and say "I'm firing this guy because I don't like him and I think he's a water-carrier for Obama, Lynch, Hillary, and the Deep State/Liberal Media Establishment."

Just show your dick. Don't play with it in the dark corners like a guilt-ridden pervert.

Just whip it out and wag it around like a proud, confident pervert.

People are tired of being lied to. I know I am. And we actually like getting a dash of unvarnished, unscripted, un-focus-grouped truth every now and again.

Trump is a shitty, obvious, unconvincing liar and he needs to know that about himself. (Obama was too, but he had the media backing him up on every inch of deception.)

Don't do the shit you're bad at; do the stuff you're good at.

31 My guess is that President Trump figured he would handle the press with this and they wouldn't be on him about the firing, particularly as just hours before they were yelling about how horrible Comey was.

So he figured, well this should keep things smooth sailing, and put out the letters.

And they went full retard anyway. Hopefully he's learned his lesson.

I would LOVE to see an appointment that is NOT a "former prosecutor" but is instead a career investigator. Former prosecutors tend to get mixed-up about their roles. Not hating on lawyers, just saying.

Investigators go get facts/evidence, assemble reports of facts/evidence and present the facts to prosecutors. Who make prosecutorial decisions or ask for more facts/evidence. Repeat as necessary.

Chief investigators lead teams of investigators by the proper allocation of resources to emerging threats to civil liberties and keep the suits off the working investigators' backs as much as possible.

That's how it was designed to work anyway.

Is that true, though? I agree, that if it is true that the White House was putting it out there that Comey was fired because of Rosenstein's initiative, when in fact Trump was the driver, it was a stupid play.

But, how do we know that the White House was saying it was Rosenstein? Anonymous sources? Did anyone at the White House go on the record on this? Or is this all just more WaPo/NYT/Resistance bullshit?

174 "I just assume all unnamed source stories are lies. I'm right more often than not."

Years ago I think it was Brent Bozell who had a blog where he taught people how to read the media. One of his best points was to just assume every unsourced, anonymous, unnamed operative type quote or comment was simply the writer's injection of his narrative into his 'reporting'.

So now when I read a piece and remove that type of language from the narrative it typically dissolves into nothing worth reading. And he did mention that assuming the opposite of the narrative was probably closer to the truth makes your take exactly correct!

which it is, both in law and everyday experience.

I can kind of believe that Trump didn't want this on his head precisely because he knew the media would blow up.

I'm trying to tell him that these evasions to avoid the media blowing up are futile, make him look bad, and make him look guilty, and he should stop with them because they don't work, and should just accept that the media is going to blow up about it anyway so might as well be bold about it and make them look like assholes.

235 Email I just sent to someone who queried as to the status of my zombietime-ing:

---

"I rarely make or upload reports any more. The information-scape is changing constantly, and I haven't been (nor has anyone else been) able to keep up with what it all means.

As far as I can tell, the "mainstream" media has continued losing so much of its former influence that some line has been crossed to where it is now essentially "irrelevant." But at the same time, "blogging" as a concept is also fading away into the history books. So from whence, then, do people get their "information"?

As far as I can surmise, people nowadays don't get "information" -- instead, they get their individually curated "social media feeds" which are designed to only confirm what they already "know," and serve to further cement their membership is various social tribes.

So despite the disintegration of the media monopoly, it's actually getting more difficult to reach "the average person" these days, because there is no longer such a thing as an "average" person -- merely members of various political tribes. I can reach an audience of people who already agree with me but I'm seeing less and less the point of even doing that. What I always have wanted is to reach people who don't agree with me, so I can change their minds. But with the hyper-specificity of each person's "media feed," and the way that tribal shibboleths and "seals of approval" determine what is an acceptable component of each members infoscape, it has become nearly impossible to reach anyone but those in one's own tribe.

As a result, my motivation to "blog" diminishes daily!"

247 Well, thanks for the back-handed insult out of nowhere, well done.

And I know what the purpose of a news aggregate site is- my problem is simply with his shift in focus of the stories he links to- they have become more and more outright fake news, whereas he used to link to more solid reporting, at least above the fold.

But whatever, thanks for your input.

256 I think Brian York had the best rundown about the timing issue of Comey's dismissal.

Byron York: To fire Comey, Trump team waited for Rosenstein
But those same Trump team members who believed Comey should go also believed there should be a process involved in doing it. Truth be told, not all of them - some wanted to see Trump fire everybody on Jan. 21: U.S. attorneys, ambassadors, Obama holdovers, everybody. But the more institutionally-minded members of the Trump team wanted to see a process observed. In the case of removing Comey, that involved going through the chain of command.

The structure was this: The FBI director reported to the deputy attorney general, who reported to the attorney general, who reported to the president. When Trump fired Comey Tuesday afternoon, that chain of command had been in place for all of 14 days.

258 OT but probably the greatest example of leftist cognitive dissonance I've seen so far today (I'll probably see worse tomorrow)....

A Facebook page/site called Book Riot (which I originally "followed" because they were supposed to be about books, but has since gone hardcore Trump-is-the-second-coming of Hitler leftist) has a post up (it appeared in my news feed) titled "100 Must-Read LGBTQIA YA Books". (I have no idea what several of those letters mean.) The post is illustrated with a photo of an attractive young woman sitting in the grass contentedly reading, with a rainbow-patterned umbrella/parasol beside her... and she is wearing a hijab.

So Book Riot apparently believes that Muslim women who take their religion seriously enough to wear a hijab (or are too afraid of their husbands, male relatives, or local authorities NOT to wear one) are going to spend their spare time reading young adult (i.e., aimed at teens) novels about the glories of "the queer and trans rainbow"? Not to mention the fact that places where local law or custom requires women to be so dressed aren't very LGBT et al friendly, to put it mildly?

Speaking of lies:

The Left loves lies.

They lie about everything.

Every word is about manipulation rather than truth.

Another reason they are naturally allies for Islam - the religion of lying liars who lie all the time because they think God desperately needs their lies on his side - or something.

Let us not forget these words - so we can understand what the cause of all those lies is: "When Satan lies, he speaks his native tongue."

283 Ok - I am trying to not to follow this too closely. But a very cursory, light, skim of the mass hysteria leads me to this pondering. Isn't it possible that Trump was in his heart-of-hearts determined to fire Comey since the election, kiss blowing or no kiss blowing? And then Rosenstein comes along two weeks ago (10 days ago?) and does his own investigation and determines that, yeah, this FBI Director did some really out-of-bounds stuff here. And this determination by Rosenstein makes its way into Trump's ear. This being just a few days after that pathetic May 3rd testimony to the Senate Judiciary Committee. And Trump says to himself: "That's it! This guy's outta here now." And asked Rosenstein to draft up the document, etc.
And so yes, Trump decided to fire Comey on his own, before Rosensteins document. BUT ALSO it was Rosenstein's investigation that finally put the wheels in motion.
So it wasn't a lie that Rosenstein's document were the reason Trump fired Comey. Just different ways of looking at the events.
Yes, I voted for Trump.

309 So I'm glad that this shabby, poorly-thought-out decision to suggest that Rosenstein Did It is behind us.

Uh. No. This is what passes for a normal decision-making process in large bureaucracies especially government bureaucracies like the Federal Government which employs some 3 million people, it as been said.

Trump wanted to fire Comey right from the beginning, but Trump, being a business man and not a politician asks the very obvious question; 'can the President fire the FBI Director?'. Like all such simple questions in Washington, D.C. it is not a simple question. 'Nixon did it', doesn't work as an example. 'Clinton did it', also doesn't work. Lawyers must be consulted and a study group convened to study the question. Also the political ramifications have to be analyzed by experts in the field of politics and public opinion. So Trump asks his advisors, 'can I fire this guy', and the advisors pass the question around, hem and haw, back and fill, circle the wagons, and some poor schlub deep in the bureaucracy gets the assignment, 'can the President fire the FBI director', and said schlub toils away in obscurity for a week or a month or five and writes a position paper.

Then! when the president makes the decision to fire the FBI Directory all hell breaks loose as everyone and his second cousin express their opinions, because everyone in Washington, D.C. has an opinion. Sometimes many opinions. Some even contradictory opinions useful for any occasion.

But the way it works, one guy, one guy, in Washington, D. C. woke up one day and said, "Fuck it. You're fired!"

Then! Of course the case goes to court where a federal judge might well, in some future time, render a decision for or against, maybe.

310 >>>>Wait...What?

When did Trump say that he fired Comey because Rosenstein asked him to?

I don't think so. Trump clearly said he fired Comey because he
wasn't doing a good job. Of course he had a report from others in the
FBI to back up his decision, but that's far from blaming Rosenstein.

Although the President has the power to remove an FBI director, the decision should not be taken lightly. I agree with the nearly unanimous opinions of former Department officials. As a result, the FBI is unlikely to regain public and congressional trust until it has a Director who understands the gravity of the mistakes and pledges never to repeat them. 329 I think I invented the cottage cheese sandwich (within my family), by brother thinks he invented the cottage cheese sandwich.

I'll give you two points. My older brother was the type of guy to grab things away from me just because he could, as if my intentions were nothing to consider, AND in his teenage years he couldn't make a sandwich without knowing what kind of sandwich you had made for yourself. My recollection was specifically trying to come up with something I never saw anybody eat before.

He could still be right about the sandwich, and I made up a memory. My confidence is with my memory. One is the truth, the other is not the truth, but not necessarily a lie or deception.

People rather seldom know their thoughts in the way they would linearize it in an explanation, and they often don't express it to a fully accurate representation of what exactly they thought. Let's quit giving the left too much room in turning a possible cluster of misperceptions/misinterpretations into politics or deception.

It could be true that Trump wanted to fire Comey (I believe that). It could simultaneously be true that Sessions picked up on this and asked his second, to draft an assessment of Comey's fitness to remain in office. Then it could be true that the AG office put together the recommendation before Trump even chalked up his hands to swing the axe--so it accelerated the process. So to some it looks like it initiated somewhere, but to Trump, it's simply an expression of his building momentum to fire Comey.

Anybody who has watched Trump can tell you that if it made him look too indecisive, he going to simply exaggerate his will to swing the axe.

Let's stop responding to the 16-color carton scenarios that the left puts to us.

Can we do that??!!

338 If Trump fires Comey too soon, it becomes reprisal for failing to jail Trump's political opponent (not really, simply in the image game) and thus representative of Trump's Will to Junta. So, regardless of Trump's willingness to fire Comey, it's opportune that he gives Comey a little rope. And the admin must have thought the lib outrage after Comey's testimony before Congress gave them enough space and opportunity to act--on what Trump always wanted to do. Plus the recommendation of Comey's two superiors makes it all the more a legit action--were there sanity in today's politics.

Posted by: Axeman at May 11, 2017 03:50 PM (2mC6G)

339 I have no idea why Ace is accusing Trump of lying about firing Comey. I mean seriously, he sends a formal letter delivered by an administration official to Comey's office(only to find he wasn't there) in which he says that the FBI needs confidence in it's leadership as does the country. He does so with the inclusion of a rationale letter from the Deputy AG (demonstrating cause) and a concurrence letter from the superior Comey reports to , the AG.

Now , three days later, after the media has made up a hundred stories about how and why Comey was fired, all to make it look nefarious on Trump's part, including one that this was all on Rosenstein from supposedly someone in the WH, then last night, Dem congressman screaming that Trump lied, this was all his doing and he forced the AG and Dep AG into doing this, etc.

People, stop believing Democrats and 99% of the media, including Fox and most of the internet.

341 On the issue of whether Trump "lied" about Rosenstein recommending the firing.

Why are we talking about that?

The point is, really, that the media will fill a vacuum of information with their nonsense.

Trump gets on top of this within a few hours and says hey he got fired because he wasn't doing his job. But because he didn't tweet that simultaneously, somehow it wasn't Trumps idea.

Seriously, if you don't see Trump tweet it, or see video of him saying it, then don't take it for granted that's what he said.

355 As usual in the comments section, TM;dr.

If someone else has already pointed this out then apologies (and how could someone else not have)

This complaint is hogwash. Trump may have been going to fire Comey all along but that's beside the point. You don't get into your subordinates bailiwick if you can help it. He asked for the opinion of the supervisor. The supervisor said he can/should fire him. Now if the supervisor would have come back and said, nah, he's a great guy, then it's time for Trump to sit down with the supervisor, explain why he disagrees and the shmuck has to go anyway.

Chain of command, it works and it's important. While orders may come down to do something you always, if you in any way can, give the supervisors closest to the issue the first say. It might be you have to explain to that supervisor that yours is the decision at the end of the day, but you don't cut out your subordinate leaders and just take it in your head to. You might as well fire them too since you just demonstrated that you don't trust them to make the right decision and that you'd tromp on them anyway so they don't have the right/authority to make the decision 'cause you're the boss.

Like it or not Trump did it the right way for the organization, for the health of the organization, the leaders in it and the subordinates that deserve the standard measure of consistency and chain of command.

What are we talking about? Trump didn't hide behind anybody's memo that I can see. And, BTW, the Rosenstein memo is about 100Megatons of pretty obvious but irrefutable smackdown on Comey.

What are we talking about?

Trump fired the FBI director. Maybe a bit late, but as the president's russki friends say - lusche pozdna chem nikogda (better late than never).

Dunno about the mechanics, but the dude learned about it on the TV, as he was giving a public speech. Thought it was a hoax, then got the "um, boss, we gotta go talk" from his horse-holders. Pretty f***ing classic. And well deserved.

Comey always has been no-there-there. Oh, lots of PR and arrogance and self-importance. To go with no particular abilities that rise above the average.

Rosenstein said "no" when asked about the made-up b.s. about his quitting. Boom.

I'm puzzled. We have here one of the best moves Trump has made yet, we have the most outlandishly absurd reactions from the press and their political arm, we have a 100MT smackdown memo reminding everyone of why this guy had no business being FBI director, he gets a nice dose of humiliation in the process, and Trump tweets up a storm of trash-talk in response to the idiocy.

On 7/20/93 Foster was found dead). What a crazy coincidence! And did the media riot about this? I would speculate, shake magic 8 ball, and say no.
