Quotes of The Day

Quote I

The French have voted to postpone their rendezvous with destiny. But kicking the croissant down the road means another half-decade of demographic transformation that lengthens the odds against ever winning the numbers to halt it. Mark Steyn

Quote II

The marriage discussions [were clouded by Obama’s] torment over this central issue of life. . .race and identity. [The] resolution of his black identity was directly linked to his decision to pursue a political career.Sheila Miyoshi Jager.

Quote III

It is gonna get worse because of the stupidity that we're hearing coming out of people who say, "We need to build bridges, not walls." Wrong! You can't build a bridge to terror. You need to build a wall between you and terror. Michael Savage

Some monopolies were acceptable. Not anymore, say goodbye to the Texas Instruments 84.

If you took a math class at some point in the US, there is likely a bulky $100 calculator gathering dust somewhere in your closet.
That would be the Texas Instruments 84—or the TI 84-Plus, or the TI-89, or any of the other even more expensive variants—a shoe-sized graphing calculator released in 2004 that managed to worm its way into nearly every American math class above a simple arithmetic level. Public- and private-school students alike are usually required to buy the calculator themselves; its ubiquitous presence and instantly recognizable appearance have become the subject of memes all around the web.

All good things come to an end.

Banned from the buffet table the Ukraine, Steven Seagal is a threat to security.

Steven Seagal has been banned from Ukraine for five years, the Guardian reported Saturday.

Seagal, 65, known for movies such as “Under Siege” and “Hard to Kill,” has been deemed a threat by the Ukranian security service, the agency said in a letter to the Web site Apostrophe. The service’s press secretary later confirmed the ban.

The agency did not specify the reasons for the ban, but Seagal is a friend to Russia President Vladimir Putin.

Does this mean better movies in the near future from Steven?

KU (Kansas University) will be a better place later this summer.

Jacob Dorman isn't going quietly.
After 10 years (and earning tenure) in the history department at the University of Kansas, he's leaving in large part because of a state law that, as of this summer, will allow guns on campus. That includes academic buildings. When faculty groups oppose campus carry laws, as they did in Kansas, supporters of the legislation frequently voice the view that no one will leave as a result of such laws. Dorman's resignation is evidence that some will leave.
Dorman is leaving for a comparable job (also with tenure) in another state, one without campus carry. The Lawrence Journal-World published his resignation letter Friday.

Don't let the door hit you on your ass on the way out. Here's hoping Karma never swings your way Teach.

Violence is acceptable if you're a professor.

“They should be lined up and shot,” Professor John Griffin posted to his Facebook, according to a screenshot of the post obtained by Campus Reform, even clarifying that he wasn’t being hyperbolic, saying “that’s not hyperbole; blood is on their hands.”

Constitutionally protected rights exercised by students? Bad. Unconstitutionally unprotected speech by Professor? Good.

Got it.

American travel to Cuba initially was high when relations opened up. However, travel is down. The ONT wonders why?

Indeed, the initial excitement about the formerly closed off country gave way to moral dilemmas over food shortages and other problems caused by tourism, as well as disappointment over limited working internet, lower hotel standards, and lack of running water there. The Allianz study found lack of travel infrastructure was a major cause of anxiety about traveling to Cuba for 13% of Americans.

Sounds like an expensive camping trip. Plus, you're less likely to end up in American jail than you are a Cuban jail.

Dammit!!! I'm confused. Is global warming causing global cooling ushering in a new ice age?

Research shows a natural cooling cycle that occurs every 230 years began in 2014 and will send temperatures plummeting even further by 2019.

Scientists are also expecting a “huge reduction” in solar activity for 33 years between 2020 and 2053 that will cause thermometers to crash.

The ONT Musical Interlude

Obamacare repeal. Replace with what? Health insurance around the world.

Furthermore, in view of the challenges involved in garnering enough votes for the “Obama-Lite” alternative that barely passed the House, Republicans appear to be running out of options.

If the “gradualist” strategy is so problematic, why not move to single payer? In Japan, healthcare spending makes up only 10% of GDP even though it has the world’s highest percentage of people 65 or older. In the U.S. it is an appalling 17% (Fig. 1). Japan also has the world’s lowest infant mortality, while in America this healthcare indicator exceeds that of all other developed nations with a comparable GDP (Fig. 2). If lack of access to healthcare is responsible for this shocking statistic, why not “get with the program” and shift these costs to taxpayers as they do in nearly all other affluent nations?

The ONT's guess? A cobble up approach by the Senate. Passed along to Trump for his signature. The first time the Left has the chance, it will be Single Payer.

*****

A remarkable young man, Rick Ankiel. "A story of redemption and baseball.

In the fall of 2004, Major League Baseball player Rick Ankiel had every reason to give up. The one-time pitching phenom for the St. Louis Cardinals possessed a legitimate list of “excuses” that would exempt him from criticism should he have decided to walk away from the game he loved.

50 How to make your own French flag. You don't have to wait until Bastille Day to fly your very own French flag. What a friendly way to say "Bonjour" to our little friends in France!
1. Take a broomstick. Remove the broom. Keep the stick.
2. Next, find a plain, white sheet.
3. Unfold the sheet and attach it to the stick. You can use staples or thumbtacks. (Caution: both have sharp, pointy ends, so be careful not to hurt yourself!)
4. Wave the flag at invading armies and hot-air balloons.

93 My sister returned from Cuba on Sunday. They were there about two days. Her husband ran his bare foot into something and tore off his toenail the first afternoon there. They were unable to wash the wound with running water because, well, who knows what's in the water? Found some bottled water, but couldn't wash it with tissues because they disintegrated when they got wet. Sister used some wet wipes she had to clean it up. Then, since there are no Band-Aids in Cuba, and she brought only one, they wrapped it and taped it with electrician's tape that they brought to give as gifts.

The duck tape, USB drives, electrician's tape, and stuff from the hardware store were well-received by the Cubans.

My sister and hubby went because she wanted to do a tour riding in the old cars, since our family has had a 1955 Oldsmobile since about 1961. She said the older people still think of Fidel as a god, but the younger people want the chance to have a business and make some money (Bro-in-law said they are describing Capitalism, they just don't know they are).

In all, I'm glad they are back on US soil, and I hope they didn't get a slow-moving infection in that toe.

Please note two very important things about Comey's termination that you haven't already:

1) We were shown today that the Trump admin can indeed move swiftly. Very impressive action, today.

2) Even more important, we were shown today that the Trump admin can move swiftly and quietly, which tells us they do indeed have the wherewithal to avoid those damn leaks.

96 Some monopolies were acceptable. Not anymore, say goodbye to the Texas Instruments 84.
If you took a math class at some point in the US, there is likely a bulky $100 calculator gathering dust somewhere in your closet.
That would be the Texas Instruments 84--or the TI 84-Plus, or the TI-89, or any of the other even more expensive variants--a shoe-sized graphing calculator released in 2004 that managed to worm its way into nearly every American math class above a simple arithmetic level. Public- and private-school students alike are usually required to buy the calculator themselves; its ubiquitous presence and instantly recognizable appearance have become the subject of memes all around the web.
All good things come to an end.

I was never allowed to use any calculator in any math class I ever took.

I'm better off for it.

104 Nice ONT. I'd like for HSAs and high deductible insurance to become the standard so more people would ask "what does this cost" before undergoing some medical treatment or other. We have the most expensive costs in the world because we have private insurance and demands for the best treatments and then liberals who insist than even scum of the earth felons are entitled to that same great care on the taxpayer's dime. That is one thing supreme ruler PaleRider would change. It would be "OK, you are a felon, you get bare bones treatment at the state's expense, like Cuba level care. if you want more, you or your family are free to maintain a health insurance policy that will cover top tier treatments.

True, but there may have to be *some* controls on certain life-saving emergency operations. Not to get too personal, but when your appendix ruptures, you don't have tons of time to calmly weigh the pros and cons.

So the good news is that she's doing much better cognitively, and is getting out & about more (lots of friends who want to take her out).

The sucky news is mostly something I had known, but was choosing to ignore in light of that progress: there is no cure for this, no surgery to make it go away. She' on Avastin, and that's it.

BIL tells me:

She is not eligible for clinical trials, her performance status is too poor.. All treatment for glioblastoma is palliative.

So we're buying some time, and hoping that she enjoys what time she has left.

Which is not to say that we've given up hope, but it *is* time for me to be realistic.

Please pray that the time she has left is filled with joy.

I bought the book "Shattered". I'm not very far yet, but as little as I've read it is clear that the two authors are liberals who wanted Hillary to win. Within the first several pages they've had to admit that the biggest problem with the campaign was the candidate. She kept blaming her campaign people for the fact that THEY couldn't come up with a message, voice, or tone for HER campaign.

It's kind of predictable. She blames everyone but herself. But it's fun seeing these liberal reporters who liked her and thought she'd be great candidate try to explain her f**k ups.

The infant mortality rates don't include a baby that dies within 72 hours of being born, or some such time frame.. it's considered either a miscarriage or a stillbirth, I can't remember now.

Remember everyone, Obamacare meant that people would no longer use the emergency room as their doctor's office thus taking people out of them and causing the price of insurance to fall.

If you have been to the ER in the last couple of years you know that is a load of BS. ER visits have risen 30% in the last three years, and are expected to keep rising.

One of the hospitals here in town is building an ER only hospital several miles from their main hospital. They said that only 25% of ER patients actually get admitted to the hospital.

So remember when people talk about "healthcare", what they are really talking about is going to the ER when they have a case of hemorrhoids.

What I want to know is how many doctors hospitals specialist other than Ben Carson are going to step back cut their income by two thirds and start treating single payer patients Also our tax structure would have to be completely redone increasing taxes for everyone and especially for those currently who don't have pay any.

348 I don't think the TI-84 (or similar) is going anywhere quick. In particular, it is and will be a requirement, and emulating it (which you can do on a phone) won't cut it, because they don't want you to have access to the internet either. Additionally, instructors like that they can take control of your calculator, clearing it's memory to a known state and locking it. In general, the ti-84 is a calculator that you pay for but never own.

That said, there are raspberry pi type devices that run under $10 that could be hooked up to 20-30 worth of electronics to do everything that a TI-85 can do, but better and more cheaply. Something will eventually come of this. But probably not for 10+ years. Teachers tend to be very conservative about how they teach. And really, only about that, and only in the sense that they hate change with the kind of burning passion that would usually involve a large dose of penicillin to cure.

477 I've got a pile of old calculators from the mid-80s on. They still work, though I keep the batteries out (save for the button cells -- I don't think they leak).

And re RPN. It is simplicity itself to write a routine to parse a RPN input string. Ie write a command such as

"calc" that does something like

"calc 1 2 3 * + "

which returns 1 + 2*3 . You just do a stack, pushing operands on it, and popping them off when you encounter an operator character.

Much harder is parsing normal notation. I did it. Well I did something that seemed to work. I'm sure there were bugs in it that would've been exposed with enough input that went down some more complex path than I'd ever tested.

503 Graphing calculators honestly weren't that important for math classes. 95% of the typical uses can be dealt with a much cheaper scientific calculator with a stats function.

Old TI-82s will get students through the occasional need for actual graph functions.

The prevalence of the graphing calculators when I was in school was usually more about kids cheating by saving test answers and giving them to students in later classes.

601 From the original post:

"If you took a math class at some point in the US, there is likely a bulky $100 calculator gathering dust somewhere in your closet.
"

W?
T?
F???

At my school, "calculator" was a synonym for "cheating," and anyone who brought a calculator to campus received detention; multiple infractions would get you expelled. If you were found to have a calculator in math class,, you were given an "F" and "CHEATER" was branded on your permanent record.

I thought this was the standard attitude toward calculators in schools, until sometime very recently when all kids were given every kind of electronic device to be used "educationally" and ("coincidentally") the quality of education went down the toilet.

Am I alone in this experience? Weren't calculators banned at your schools too? And if not, what year was the transition-point from "calculators are illegal" to "calculators are mandatory"?

Didn't use a calculator for tests in math, chemistry, or physics. Had to write everything out long form for the most part as well.

Only time a calculator or computer was allowed was in upper division labs where a crapload of number crunching was involved, and even then we had to demonstrate we understood the equations.

Yup.

So now you have students that can attempt to enter 3+3= into a calculator, and when the given answer is less than either of the two numbers, just calmly write the answer down and move on.

Because the calculator is never wrong.

And the students haven't mastered the basic concept of adding two whole numbers will give you an answer larger than either of the two numbers.
