[When I Want An Art Critic's Opinion I'll Beat It Out Of Him]

breton.jpg

Breton Brother and Sister
William Bouguereau

This is gorgeous. And a testament to the concept that good things come to those who work hard.

Sorry "performance artists" and "installation artists" and "Three Used Tissues And A Broken Tea Cup artists." This guy worked hard at being an artist, and he succeeded.

Based on sketches Bouguereau made while summering in Brittany in the late 1860s, this picture was completed in the artist's studio in 1871. His young models, posed in traditional Breton costumes, epitomize pastoral sibling affection. This type of scene was quickly snapped up by American collectors, earning Bouguereau fame and fortune. As one critic explained, "Whoever gets a picture by [him] gets the full worth of his money, in finished painting, first-rate drawing, and a subject and treatment that no well-bred person can...fault."

He had the unfortunate timing of painting during the rise of Impressionism and Modernism. He is seen as a saccharine relic of the Past whose art does nothing to contribute to modern Society. All the artistic criticisms you heard about Norman Rockwell (i.e. too cute, not serious, not relevant to the struggle, etc.), put on William Bouguereau.

By the Academy and the Traditionalists, yes. The younger generation of critics tended to support the Realists and Impressionists. By the time of the Post-Impressionists, Traditionalism has lost its influence on the art world. It would try to hang on, especially in the USA, but World War I was the final nail in its coffin.

Seeing as this painting was completed in 1871 I started wondering about art themes in Europe and the influence of the Franco-Prussian War. That war had an enormous influence on European politics (one could credibly argue that it was just the first campaign in a Greater European War that only ended in 1945), and I'm wondering if it had the same effect on art.

83 What a gorgeous painting. Appropriate colors that are appealing but not distracting and they set off the brilliance of her white blouse and head piece. I love the way he captures the folds in the material.

The very realistic look of the children and their sharp delineation makes them pop out from the softer and darker background, outing the viewers' focus where it belongs. And the direct stare of the young models establishes a bridge with the audience. I feel that direct look emphasizes their innocent youth; there's nothing of artifice or calculation in it.

I've seen other Bouguereau's works. The man seems to genuinely enjoy painting his subjects whether this couple or the sensual pleasures of a bather or Venus. I find his art, and it is art, to be highly desirable.

Thanks for another great thread, CBD.

I will be gone from the threads as well until after Resurrection Sunday. However, I will still try to post a morning devotional, Good Friday till Easter. Today's devotional on Holy Thursday is on the morning thread, at post 195.
May the Lord bless you and keep you. May He make His face shine upon you, and give you His peace. Hang on - Sunday's coming.

The study of art cannot be completed without the study of its historical context. I don't know much about the Franco-Prussian War, the Paris Commune or its political aftermath. It definitely affected French art though. When I taught this period, I dedicated a huge chunk of class time to just the facts of World War I. That War had a profound effect on art history.

112 GA-6 special next Tues.: new poll

Shows DEM @ 39%-- nowhere near the 50% he'd need to win outright.

One-on-one, against either of the 2 leading GOP candidates, the DEM (Ossoff; VERY bad news indeed) loses by about 8 points or so.

The DEM in GA-6 has raised $4 mill. THIS is the one where the DNC has bet all the chips they have-- NOT the one last Tues. in KS; not MT at large; not the one in SC. THIS one in GA, to replace Tom Price. It's upscale suburban & Mr. Orange didn't run particularly well there. Underperformed Romney by a zillion points. OK... 17 points.

The poll was commissioned by Red Racing Horses (RRH) & is +/- 5 points MOE. It's a legit lol by a neutral outfit, imo.

I used to be a tour guide in a well-respected Modernist art gallery. I was trained in the art criticisms and got the opposite from the actual patrons. There are some patrons that try to agree with the Scholars because they want to be seen as thoughtful, smart or tasteful. Sometimes they genuinely like Modern art. Art is great because there is something for everyone.

Well, I've had a fascination with the Franco-Prussian War for awhile now. It's a radical turning-point in history that's often not well understood.

Plus, it pisses me off when Hollywood sets films in 1870 Paris because it sounds romantic, but ignores the war completely, including the fact that Paris was under siege for 4 months.

In other art news:

The sculptor of Wall Street's iconic "Charging Bull"
statue says New York City has violated his legal rights with the
placement of "Fearless Girl," a statue of a young girl...Artist Arturo Di Modica and his lawyers argued at a press conference in
New York City on Wednesday that the placement of the statue was
copyright infringement and distorted the meaning of his sculpture.

Di Modica at times became emotional during a press conference, and
said the bull's message was supposed to be "freedom in the world, peace,
strength, power and love."

"In our opinion, a deliberate choice was made to exploit and to
appropriate the Charging Bull through the placement of 'Fearless
Girl,'"...

If it's uncharacteristically thorough, it'll cover or at least touch on the sinking of Von Spee's squadron off the coast of the Falklands early in the war, which is interesting on many different levels that ordinarily escape observation (acute controversy over a possible/successful denial-and-deception campaign, the Pacific in WW1 naval activity, the role of wireless and undersea cables, the Panama Canal's first strategic consequentiality, etc.)...

169 94 Seeing as this painting was completed in 1871 I started wondering about art themes in Europe and the influence of the Franco-Prussian War. That war had an enormous influence on European politics (one could credibly argue that it was just the first campaign in a Greater European War that only ended in 1945), and I'm wondering if it had the same effect on art.
Posted by: IllTemperedCur at April 13, 2017 09:44 AM (XWkhW)

The study of art cannot be completed without the study of its historical context. I don't know much about the Franco-Prussian War, the Paris Commune or its political aftermath. It definitely affected French art though. When I taught this period, I dedicated a huge chunk of class time to just the facts of World War I. That War had a profound effect on art history.

They are accessible to the outside world via a mock up cabin in a museum in Helsinki and can be interacted with via a screen - kind a like Skype. The results of course, are utterly hilarious as 4Chan, and its Scandinavian equivalents, mercilessly troll him. Of course, being imprisoned in cabins, Shia et al. cannot get away. From the internet (Inside higher edu..)
It is great that the state of New York wants to do something progressive
for higher education, but the devil is in the details. And the history
of American college financial aid has shown that well-intentioned
programs often backfire if they do not examine unintended consequences.
We should promote free public higher education, but only if we do it

CCNY used to be a great school. It produced eminent scientists and serious Nobel prize winners. Then they decided that they had to have open enrollment, so that everyone could have an equal chance of attending a great school. Well ... everyone was able to attend but the cost was that the once-great school is now a piece of shit and most of the people who enroll never make it through. The school had to come to the level of its student body.

This is a leftist success story. Everybody can say they went to CCNY .. though now no one with a brain would want to.

There's nothing wrong with critical analysis of great works of art and sussing out what the artist was trying to do or say.

It's just that the progs and commies have f*ked up art criticism (as they do everything) by imposing often ludicrous meanings on works that are obviously far removed from anything the artist could imagine.

So now art criticism leaves a bad taste in everybody's mouth. But it didn't have to be that way.

234 Meanwhile, back at the restaurant...

The first of the table tops have come in and they are great. These are made by woman who has a small company making cutting boards and other products out of the curly (tiger) maple that isn't quite good enough for Gibson Guitars.

Apparently, Gibson will use about 6 board feet out of every 100, so there is a lot of wood left over.

We also just order a few refrigerator items you can see at webstaurant - a True TSSU-60-10HC 2 Door refrigerated sandwich prep table (for when someone says "go make me a sammich") and the Vollrath 40863 48" Cubed Glass refrigerated countertop display cabinet, to encourage people to pig out on pies and cakes and such.

Also bought (62) of the Lancaster natural wood window back chair.

All that money in the bank was just collecting dust anyway.

I'm becoming much more aware of the relationship between, not just the artist capturing the mood/style of the subject, but also the notion of how the artist, in posing and painting his subjects, creates a mood and style.

In other words, here you have a haughty expression, perhaps impatience, and if so, might it be due to the fact that he asked her to dress up in an outfit she doesn't usually wear, and sit there while he draws her likeness?

How well did he know her before asking her to pose? He often did he ask her to pose for this one painting? Was the little boy a willing subject, or is this perfectly behaved little cherub of a child a lie, in that he was screaming the whole time, and the artist had to create from his own imagination the peaceful child we see here?

All of that, and more that we'll never know, went into creating the girl we see in the painting. She's beautiful. And mysterious, and we'll all only guess at what it all means.

Freakin' art, that is.

How many commenters have written, 'It's just like a photograph'? But that's the point, isn't it? With the advent of modern photography, there's little commercial need for representational exactitude in likeness in painting.

I admire craftsmanship. I admire technical mastery--and the example above is an exemplar of technical mastery. However, it isn't necessarily snobbish to point out that the measure of a work of visual art should not necessarily be dependent on its verisimilitude, how closely it approximates real life.

Tastes differ. I don't look down on people who don't like abstract works. That said, I don't like being called a snob for thinking the painting above is a pedestrian piece of sentimental tripe.

That's the thing though. We can take this back from the self-proclaimed keepers of art.

People who want to do art criticism should be encouraged to do so, but let's set some fairly easy to understand ground rules though:

1. Respect the intent of the artist.
2. Accept others' interpretations, as long as they are not DISMISSIVE of the intent of the artist.

In other words, if you want to see something else in a piece of art, fine, go for it. That is your right. But don't tell me the piece above is pro-abortion or pro-pedophilia or some other such nonsense, because YOU aren't allowed to foist that on the art, when the artist had NO indication of putting it there.

What most people admire (and what many who are called "art snobs" look down on) is actual skill in producing the picture - i.e. THE work of art.

At some point "artists" decided that actual skill in producing images was some sort of vulgar exercise and that is where they split with the vast majority of people. "Artists" wanted to be known (and celebrated) more for their deep intellects and profound statements rather than garish splotches of paint on canvas or lines on paper that took real talent to make. This is the problem. This is why most people laugh at lots of abstract stuff.

290 that is how it was described to me by moms who had ear tubes installed after chronic ear infections. Eustachean tubes? My grandmothers used to growl and mutter about covering ears for little ones in the wind.

*****

Oh, okay. I think you are conflating a couple or three different things.

1. Eustachian tube is an anatomic channel that connects the middle ear with the inside of the nose. It allows drainage of fluid and equalization of air pressure.

2. Surgical ear tubes (also known as PE tubes or pressure equalization tubes) are small plastic grommets inserted into the ear drum (tympanic membrane) to assist with drainage of chronic fluid from repeated infections. They typically stay in place for a year or two and then are spontaneously expelled and the hole in the eardrum seals on its own (but not always)

3. Covering the ears is really not much of a factor in preventing ear infections. The underlying cause of middle ear infections is more commonly an upper respiratory tract infection, that includes the middle ear space (via the Eustachian tubes) and bacterial overgrowth within that mucous fluid in the middle ear.

4. Testicles may drop. Eustachian tubes? Not so much.

We look at the limited elements of her beauty (her charcoal eyes, her fingers, feet and face) in our own subjective effort to project those characteristics to support an image of her objective beauty.

We can speculate that she is kind and compassionate judging from the happiness found on her brothers face, which is reassuring to the viewer that she has a good heart and soul.

German foreign minister Zimmerman telegraphed Mexico offering to let them have the southwestern US if they attacked the US if the US declared war on Germany. The Brits eavesdropped on the wire and let the US know. When confronted, the Germans admitted it. It caused great anti-German feeling in the US. PBS went on and on about how Wilson was too proud to fight and wept when he was forced into war. But no Zimmerman. Am I paranoid for suspecting PBS was shielding Mexico and the "immigrants" from any bad mindthoughts concerning reconquista-ism?

403 327 The author ridicules the way modern art critics read modern social causes into the Old Masters' works. For example, see his discussion on Gauguin's "The Spirit of the Dead Watching". The scholar says it is about White Male dominance of the Brown-skinned Female Other. According to Kimball, what Gauguin was really doing was depicting a dream his Tahitian mistress had.

Posted by: Kris at April 13, 2017 11:00 AM (nwqNw)

Right. I mentioned Kimball's book on the book thread awhile back. The "scholar" who turned Gaugin's work into a progressive morality play is what gives art criticism a bad name. Kimball is trying to restore its legitimate function.

Posted by: OregonMuse, deplorable since 2004 at April 13, 2017 11:05 AM (V4ryl)

Ugh.

You've wandered into a huge pet peeve of mine-

the imposition of some modern progressive nonsense onto the art of a previous era.

A few years ago I wandered onto a movie website where the proprietor was trying to make some bizarre assertion that the director of a 1930s horror movie was making a statement about global warming.

The movie was a very standard monster flick of that era...maybe "White Zombie" if I'm remembering correctly.

And "deconstructed" by the blogtard to fit into his goofy worldview.

So, I tried to argue with him nicely and logically about the absurdity of his critique.

Aaaaaand, you can probably figure out how that went.

He immediately went from 0 to 100 on the shouty, abusive, outrageous outrage scale.

So, I insulted him gratuitously cuz life's too short for emotionally unstable morons(the bad kind).

And left.

That experience convinced me that I never wanted to see the Left take control of the gov't again in my lifetime.

Their ignorance is impervious to reason and logic or even human decency.

We really dodged a bullet when Hillary! lost.

Keep pretending that the airline process is somehow wondrously better than people know it to be.

Yes, this guy is a walking shitshow. He's no Ghandi. Then again, neither was Ghandi.

470 "Hyacinthoides non-descripta"?

O.K. But the PLANT is Hyacinthoides non-scripta.

Greetings from the Gardening Thread, Bluebell.

471 Did I read that wrong?

472 Bougereau's work is gorgeous, but his work leaves me with some question marks.
I have been told, by art instructors, to read the symbolism of the young "girl with broken vase" as depicting unhappily-lost virginity.

There's this obviously-pedophilic take on the broken vase, by another artist:

And here is another Bougereau with the same vase:

It's just something to be aware of. None of these painstakingly painted works have any accidental symbolism.

That sounds like a lot of pomo gobbledygook to me.

Bouguereau is known for his transcendentally sublime paintings of the Blessed Mother. He has no peer in presenting and executing that subject matter in 3-D.

I'm an artist - trained in painting, sculpture and illustration. I graduated a 4 year art school with new im0proved skills but also the realization that most art professors are unrepentant perverts. So it's no surprise to me that the links you reference are about dirty talk rather than just the technique and craft of painting.

Sometimes a broken vase is just a broken vase.

474 Modern art is shit. Obviously, modern art commences sometime after 1871.

475 "That sounds like a lot of pomo gobbledygook to me."

It was pretty straightforward, really, but nothing that you are required to agree with. I agree that his work is gorgeous.

Painting the Blessed Virgin Mary isn't a proof, though. We have enough instances of debauched homosexuals who nevertheless painted sublime religious art.

476 startlingly beautiful painting

477 I'm gonna second Shoey, I never comment on these beautiful paintings but this one is one of the most gorgeous things I have ever seen.

Probably makes me a philistine, or whatever they call people who are not fully appreciative of a poorly painted black square.

Who for example?

In any case, Bougeuareau was a devout Catholic whose oeuvre was an expression of his spiritual beliefs:

"Bougeaureau viewed his art as a form of worship of God and His most beloved creation, mankind."

(I'm not sure why you had to include the modifier "debauched' before the word homosexual though.)

479 The Nut Gatherers (at the Detroit Institute of Arts) is my favorite Bouguereau painting. My best friend's mother used to say it reminded her of us, long before we ever saw it (my bf was born in Detroit but the family moved). The flush of the skin and the way that the girls face each other catches them in a way that seems natural even though the image is idealized.

Speaking of critics, I got the following comment about a piece of mine: "It has a unique quality of gestural solidity which makes the sculpture appear both stable and ethereal." I think it's a compliment.

As for criticism of Rockwell, I thought it was funny that when I took my parents and one of my brothers to see a traveling exhibit of his work, it was packed. A report said it was one of the most popular exhibits, and I could tell why. People were responding to the paintings, and most of them were too young to have ever seen the Saturday Post or have seen them in the context of just illustrations.

480 -I can't produce DNA-stained sheets for you, but Michelangelo and Caravaggio are two examples.

-Religiosity is not an argument against pedophilia.

-Not all homosexuals are debauched. Some are sexually continent, as practicing Christians.

-I linked to three paintings. No dirty writing, no pomo revisionism. Just the paintings.
