Overnight Open Thread (24 Mar 2017)

Sadly, this is true. Stark reality of the London attack is that low-tech jihadis cannot be stopped. Cars and knives are all too easy to obtain and you can't put up vehicle barriers everywhere.

Methane

Ooops. NOAA study shows as US drilling surged, methane emissions didn't. I thought the science was settled?

Morse Code

Why WX is the abbreviation for weather. There are a lot more morse code shorthand and abbreviations at the link.

Lynda Carter's Rock and Roll Fantasy

Damn she was hot.

Campus Rape Frenzy

Everything you think you know about campus sexual assault is wrong. Now if they can forward this to the DoD so they can correct their training materials.

The best known source of the claim that only 2 percent of rape accusations are false is Susan Brownmiller's 1975 book Against Our Will: Men, Women, and Rape. For this fact, Brownmiller cited not a study but rather a speech, by a New York judge, who mentioned unpublished alleged finding by the "NYC Rape Analysis Squad".

Meanwhile, the real campus sexual assault frenzy committed by female teachers continues or gets buried in the news with far less coverage than fake campus rapes.
The "big three" networks -- ABC, CBS, and NBC -- continued their shameful blackout into Wednesday night of the horrifying rape of a teenage girl in a Maryland high school bathroom, allegedly by two men, including one who police say is in the U.S. illegally.

Instead, the pathetic liberal media that's shown no interest in the Rockville High School case complied with Rolling Stone in giving more than 10 minutes of coverage in two days to the fake 2014 claim that a University of Virginia fraternity gang-raped a female student.

Coexist

Once again the left proves it cannot truly coexist with folks. Conservative student targeted with hateful graffiti, rape and death threats; hires PI.

Hornet High Speed, Low Level

Greenwashing

It might be time to stop touting eco-friendly messages. I'm ok with companies that want to keep the environment clean or minimize their real pollution contributions, but I immediately don't like a company that touts silly AGW nonsense.

What If Baseball Question

Heh. What would happen if you tried to hit a baseball pitched at 90% the speed of light?

Dog Story

Wow! Firefighters successfully resuscitate unconscious dog who was overcome by smoke inhalation.

Dog Video

Tonight's ONT brought to you by can you spot the WWI sniper?:

As for greenwashing, I'm way, way, way less indulgent or tolerant. Of "environmental" crap. Have been mocking it for years.

Of course there's nothing funny about it. Same ignorant, lazy, misinformed public that responds (even if not as much any more) to this baseless garbage is the one that's dragging the country and culture down, and destroying freedom on a minute-by-minute basis (when allowed).

Informal rule: any winery whose staff/tasting room people use the word "sustainable" or "green" gets no business, and no future visits.

Have had moderate amounts of amusement torturing idiots who used the word, asking them if they knew that pre-modern wine-growing/making methods were so "sustainable", they had gone on for close to 5,000 years prior to anything like fake "green" crap being propagated. One of the oldest documented human activities. Of course the look one gets in return is as blank and hamster-clueless as you'd get explaining supply and demand, rule of law, freedom, world history, or actual climate science.

But, he was in the military, and we get along really well, have a ton of the same interests. I found myself really liking him.

One slight issue: he is 12 years older than me.

I'm curious as to how a pizza delivery guy is an upgrade, ex-mil or not.

12 years, not necessarily a problem, unless you're like 7.

Post some details on what maker's name and model number(s) are on the equipment. Some of that stuff is collectible. Hams refer to those old tube receivers and transmitters as "boatanchors". Many such back in the day were home-built. There are several of the Morons here who are ham operators, Mike Hammer being one. I had a mess of old radio quartz crystals, and I shipped them to him to donate to a local museum.

That, and while people do mostly use FM/AM/sideband voice and digital modes, CW will punch through when voice won't. That's why the people who do QRP stuff with an Altoids tin radio with a 9-volt battery and a wet piece of string for an antenna use Morse to work contacts in Mongolia from Seattle.

But Chelsea, like her mother, never gets a break - unlike Ivanka and her father.

Her father gets breaks? Are you saying Trump always gets a break? When did he get a break from anyone for something he said or did? Ever. You just spent two years digging back 20, 30, 40 years, looking furiously for things to retroactively not give him a break about. Sheesh!

But the laser-focused Chelsea vitriol is perplexing when it comes from the left. Shouldn't such first-daughter hatred be reserved for Ivanka?

199 So after seeing the earlier link from Cosmo that it is bad that men like to give their female partners orgasms I think the left is formally evil.

This isn't a big issue in the grand scheme of things, but we are now to the point that the left dogmatically opposes pleasure, and they oppose it specifically for the opposite reason the likes of the Pilgrims supported it (yeah the Pilgrims believed it was a husband's duty to get his wife to think of more then England in the sack) - namely because it creates pair bonding.

Seriously, if you took a list of everything considered good by the average Americas in say 1917, is there anything the left wouldn't oppose?

200 So, there's this Disney on Ice thing out right now, and one of the tells girls that they all have Princesses inside of them. I asked four people if they thought it was OK:

1. late 50's guy: yes
2. older woman who had kids: yes
3 younger woman who is a step mom: yes
4. guy early 40s: no

The interesting this is the the guy who said no is unbearably horridly liberal. Yet he was adamant that this was bad for young girls.

The women I asked said that princesses are good, and encouraging girls to think of themselves as a princess is a positive, not negative thing.

Personally, I think it's really unhealthy, and smacks of "special snowflake."

256 #210 AOP, I have to disagree with you a little bit. Sounds like she has been conditioned to accept only a certain type of male, and she is willing to make an exception partly because she sees he is no lazy bum and that his "lack of status" should not be held against him.
In fact, she has even clashed with her parents over the fact he isn't some ivy league type or a doctor etc.
Tickled Pink, you are on the right track. Just don't let the fact that, "he talks to you" be such an important factor. Lots of a-holes talk to women of all kinds. Such "men" see it as a numbers game when they want to get laid or find a victim. Use your head and not your heart. Your heart is usually an idiot and I speak from experience.
Lastly, do what is right for you. Screw what everyone else thinks. It is your life.

Which reminds me, I need to call a friend tomorrow and interfere in her new relationship too. She's in major like, but isn't planning on seeing him 'til June. And she told me that back in December. I say go now and get it over with.

If everyone is a princess, no one is a princess.
So I wouldn't tell my daughters they were princesses.

But we might discuss what makes a GOOD princess and how even non-princesses could develop those traits.

And then we might talk about the BAD traits that a princess might have and how to avoid them.

I dunno.

Trump did his part in trying to sell the bill, but had little to do with the writing of it, and now owes the GOPe nothing while the GOPe owes him for his efforts.

Rcare's crash has also trapped the Dems with full ownership of Ocare's inevitable crash after their crowing about today's survival of Ocare.

Trump needs to get out ahead of the Ocare crash with market based legislation ready to go.

I appreciate your take on this. I've wondered what to think about the whole fiasco. The Ryno bill seemed woefully inadequate and I didn't trust that phases two and three would ever happen. I wondered if I should have trusted Trump more, but he doesn't have a long record with me that would give me a reason to trust him. I've noticed that in some other videos, the pilot is holding onto the... hand... holdy... things, those grips on the canopy during the cat shot. In that one, it looks like hand-on-stick during the shot. I figured they kept their hands off the controls until they were airborne so the jolt wouldn't cause them to crash, but now I'm wondering. Does anyone know what the actual procedure is?

Age, job, divorced or not, all those things don't guarantee anything. I guess the best you can do is meet up in person, and get to know the person.

F/A-18, Hornet & Super Hornet.

Hands-Off cat shot system. The Catapult Officer won't give the launch command unless the Pilot's right hand is up on that right-side canopy handgrip.

The throttle is held at full afterburner, by the left hand gripping both the throttle, and a "T" bar just in front of the throttle, as it's found at full afterburner.

This ensures that launch G-forces won't nudge the throttle back to military-power or worse, flight idle, mid-launch.

Soon as the jet clears the deck, the G-force event is past, and the pilot then takes control of the stick, as usual.

Result is fewer Hornet mishaps on launch, than on most other preceding U.S. Navy jets.

But my question is, why are they falling for the Dems/Media "Repeal and Replace" narrative. They should just have done what the GOP faithful have been telling them for 7 years, 'Repeal, don't Replace".

I'm now of the "Let It Burn" phase of Obamacare. Don't fucking fix it, let it do what the Dems designed it to do which is crater in on itself.

478 lousagirl, the judicial/immigration EO thing is no win. The "loss" occurred when the administration complied with the absurd, lawless order of the WA court. That loss is now locked in. The clear statutory authority of the president (never questioned or challenged before) in this area - a national security prerogative - is now diluted if not gone.

And note this isn't some clash of principles or abstractions - the EO was to stop admission of specific nationals, for good reason - and that didn't happen. Without any basis whatsoever, lawless judges and parties with no standing "over-ruled" a president on a national security matter. You won't find anything remotely like it in US history.

And you won't find much of anything on it, period. The admin. doesn't seem to be bright enough to know what just happened, and the entire ruling establishment of the country is just passive (if not enthusiastic) as judicial misrule reaches further into every corner of life and governance.

484 But on the positive side, Ezekiel Emanuel (an "architect" of the idiotic disaster known as Obamacare) will be having his third meeting with the president and/or senior aides next week. Not kidding.

And Ryan's House super-pac just pulled funding from a GOP member in a tight district, because of his refusal to support the crap sandwich today.

So that's looking good for 3 out of 4 consecutive wave or rebellion elections finally producing some obvious and easy improvements. Or not.

But on a seriously positive note, 10-20 million people and lots of small businesses still see no end in sight for their plight, wherein they're without insurance for the first time in their lives due to the destruction of the individual market. (shhh, don't tell anybody about that, I think this fact is highly secret, based on all public discourse and nearly all statements by all politicians going on 3 years now)

506 navybrat there a zillion different (many unrelated to each other) problems with health care financing that "pre-existed" before O-care.

O-care created a lousy, unsustainable, and small welfare operation to subsidize crappy plans with poor market acceptance (docs willing to play). It also destroyed the individual/small group markets with regs requiring absurdly expanded, uniform offerings. It also expanded Medicaid, an entirely separate question.

The O-care plan participants are a small handful (and shrinking), just a fraction of those in the individual market who've faced ruinous premium spikes and plan degradation.

Triage. Repeal all the crap that has destroyed the individual market. Repeal the stuff that is pushing the large group plan market higher and higher in price. That will fix 90% of the damage. It's not complicated. It would be wildly popular, politically.

Let the tiny O-care phenomenon shrink and collapse on its own (while pointing and laughing and screaming "Democrats!"). Then beclown yourselves to your heart's content nobly creating a "safety net" for the small number of financially involuntarily uninsured. But first, take your boot off the finances of millions, and off the economy.

518 That baseball at .9c reminds me of the weapons in the Schwarzenegger movie 'Eraser.' I saw with a friend at the Irvine Spectrum and when the bit of dialogue went by saying how fast the projectiles went I shouted out "What the hell?" Perhaps a bit more loudly than I intended. My friend leaned over to ask me what the problem was. I explained that the weapon was unusable in atmosphere and you didn't even have to come close with it to be effective. In fact, the question was how far away you had to be when ordering a disposable robot to fire the weapon.

Let's remember something funny.

When Donald Trump was winning primaries, the fake news and the Democrats were laughing because, according to them, Mr Trump was exactly who they wanted to face in the general election.

They said they couldn't ask for a better Republican nominee because he was the easiest for hillary clinton to defeat among the rest of the R candidates.

Gah. That's rough. There was a similar thing, I think, when Apple Maps came out for the iPhone and the coordinates for xyz National Park in Australia were smack in the middle of some uncharted desolate wasteland instead of the park offices.

That said... it's called Death effin' Valley. Not because it's a cute name, but because it's 120 degrees, there are no ranger stations or convenience stores or cell coverage. It's a place that really really wants to kill you. It's like people who decide to head deeper into the woods in a blizzard because they have 4wd and someone has to dig them out in the spring, or who sailed a 25 foot Catalina around the bay and decided to do an ocean crossing because they have a Garmin and how hard can it be? Sometimes, you can't save people from themselves.

544 I have one guide to judging whether a movie is good or not: Can I watch it multiple times without being bored? Or, does the humor become stale and lame? A really good movie is enjoyable over and over. But a 'statement' movie or some such, like 'The China Syndrome', becomes silly upon the second watching, and sillier to the point of not watching after the third time, if I get to a third time.

I've read on here numerous times how 'a friend in a gray box' will flip the tv channel and see a certain movie on and become 'stuck', sitting down to watch however much of the movie is left. For me, that's a good movie. The best example of such a movie for me is 'Blazing Saddles'. I won't watch it on tv, but whenever the mood strikes and I pop in my dvd, I laugh like it's the first time and go all the way to the credits.

An example of an older movie like this is 'The Thin Man'. I can watch that over and over and over, until the alcohol finally kicks in. A newer movie like this is, well, I'll give two: 'Galaxy Quest' and 'Guardians of the Galaxy'. 'Galaxy Quest' has been enjoyable for the umpteenth time. My multiple viewings of 'Guardians' has not lessened my enjoyment of that movie in the least.

That's my 'movie review' test for whether a movie is good or not.
