Is the GOP This Stupid, Or Just Almost This Stupid?

The Democrats are proposing a "deal" in the Gorsuch confirmation: For promising to not block his nomination, which they can't do anyway, they want Republicans to promise not to nuke the filibuster for any subsequent nomination -- you know, the one that's really important because it might just well tip the Court's balance for 20 or 30 years.

In short, the Democrats are offering to take a Big Something from the Republicans in exchange for Nothing.

Here's the thing: The Republicans actually want the Democrats to keep the filibuster, because they actually don't want a conservative court. Or to have the power to enact any of their legislative measures that they claim they want to enact, but in fact do not want to enact. They like pretending they want conservative reforms, while loving the fact that the Democrats can block those reforms.

Then they get to have their cake and eat it too -- they perpetually run on issues they don't want a resolution on, while being able to explain away their failure by saying "Because Democrats" or "Because Political Reality."

So some Republicans -- I'm thinking of Orin hosta and John "Build the Dang Fence" McCain and Lindsey Graham and Susan Collins and maybe Mitch McConnell -- might just seize this non-deal "deal" as a political fig-leaf for getting what they wanted anyway (keeping the Court "balanced") while citing their eternal excuse of "The Democrats made us do it, don't you Hobbits understand that?"

46 "Here's the thing: The Republicans actually want the Democrats to keep the filibuster, because they actually don't want a conservative court."

Disagree. One thing Senate Rs can agree on is conservative SCOTUS picks.

If there's any truth to a deal with a few Senate Rs it's because Schumer is looking for a way out of his publicly calling for a filibuster to appease his loony left, which he knows is bad long-term for the Ds.

"I'll blow you, but first you must blow me." I learned in juvie that it's non-binding. After 2018 there will be more Senate Rs so any deal struck with McCain et al won't hold.

I mean, if you say no and the Dems filibuster they look terrible because they have not sufficiently made Gorsuch out to be a Nazi monster. And they will lose the filibuster over the appointment they don't really care about, and when Ruth Buzzi kicks the bucket, they got no grounds to oppose.

Or, they say okay, don't filibuster, and look like chickenshits for walking away from their threats. And they lose the filibuster on Buzzi anyway.

I really, truly want to say, no, they are not that stupid. I feel like if they think there is any serious reason to think this one over, they should go talk to the President and see what kind of deal he thinks it is.

Posted by: Curly Bill Brocius at March 23, 2017 12:54 PM (AIaBD)

91 Since 2009, the Dems, through the Obama-Pelosi-Reid regime have:

Utterly politicized the Department of Justice
Politicized the EPA
Politicized the State Department
Weaponized the politicized IRS
PWed the Defense Department
Utterly politicized the Department of Education
and filled the federal courts with buffoons and giggling clowns.

With a 4-4 USSC ideological tied vote, the circuit courts, most notably the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, reign supreme. While Gorsuch awaits his Senate vote, the liberal courts run amok.

The Constitution is under direct assault and the Dems want to bargain with McConnell for, what? More time? More social destruction?

Hell no. If Schumer and his people invoke a filibuster - nuke it.

94 The Democrats are proposing a "deal" in the Gorsuch confirmation: For promising to not block his nomination, which they can't do anyway, they want Republicans to promise not to nuke the filibuster for any subsequent nomination -- you know, the one that's really important because it might just well tip the Court's balance for 20 or 30 years.

Sounds like the same sort of deal the GOP made with the Dems that allowed Barky's illegal, self-declared (for the Senate) labor board recess appointment (and other shitstains) to fly through later confirmation - even as the courts eventually came down on the side that Barky had totally violated the Constitution - in exchange for ... nothing.

Senate GOP turds love giving dems stuff for nothing. It makes tingles run up their legs.

Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair at March 23, 2017 12:55 PM (zc3Db)

95 The Dems understand something that the old GOP types don't get: when you must compromise to get something you want, make sure you get what you want first.
Think of what happened to H W Bush after he broke his 'no new taxes' pledge: what did he get in return? Screwed.

Realistically, the Democrat Party probably has no intention of abiding by this or any other deal anyway, any more than they did in abiding by the wetback deal during Reagan Administration, or supporting the South Vietnamese government after we pulled out.

When any deal becomes inconvenient, they claim that they entered into it in good faith (!), but that THIS ONE PARTICULAR SITUATION is so egregious that fierce moral urgency requires them to double cross us. Right.

1945: GOP Negotiators Face Off With Their Japanese Counterparts

After a brief moment of silence for McCain who crashed his plane on the way to the conference, the GOP negotiators huddle and discuss their options in hushed tones.

E. Munster: Let's face it, the Japs have created the reality on the ground and we just can't roll back all of their gains.

McConeHead: Yeah, Iwo Jima and Okinawa are going to be tough. And then the Home Islands, geesh. This might take months and I really want don't want to work anymore 4 hour days.

GOP Member with Brain (soon to be primaried): We told people we would achieve unconditional surrender.

E. Munster: Hush you imbecile. We can't achieve that. I say we call it a stalemate. They keep what they have including their mainland territory. Sure tens of thousands are dying, but hey they're peons.

McConeHead: I have a better idea, we'll start by calling it quits and giving back the Philippines.

E. Munster: Even better is we give them Guadalcanal as well as a token of good will.

GOP Brain Member: Why are we negotiating with ourselves?

McConeHead: You fool, what do you know about winning? Next you'll be saying we could use the nuclear option.

Until then we're stuck with trainwreck healthcare where costs are out of control and you have to have the procedure before they can tell you how much the procedure costs and how much of that you have to pay.

I'm going with full on Dipshit stupid. Fix what ya promised to and watch as things turn around and you'd freeze the demoRats out for years to come. The Republicans in DC are still 'stuck on stuipd', acting like they are still held hostage to Dems. Trump WON because he was willing to FIGHT. The congress repubs position for Gorsuch, and Obamacare repeal should be Full steam ahead make the dems scrap and fight.
Filibuster - Sure the Repubs can nuke the filibuster of cloture, but as outlined by others smarter than me, make the Dems ACTUALLY DO THE FILIBUSTER WORK! Make them schedule and work up people to take all though the night, while committee business happens during the day. Enforce rules they can only speak once, and get the nomination work done.
As for this RINOCare bill, The default position should be repeal the entire shitshow, and negotiate to get a passage, not 'Lets jsut start with what we can get past via reconciliation only.' Im willing to bet that if they started with a better bill, knowing the dems won't pass it, but then kept the pressure on, you'd peel off a few over time to a better bill that just giving them stuff right out the gate.
All that pre-supposes the Republicans are actually trying to solve the problems they said they would once in power, but I'm truly beginning to think just like you Ace, and they don't want to change anything.

216 are they stupid or corrupt or both?

Obamacare was designed to fail, (and it is) so as to force people to cry Uncle (Sam), and smiling Hillary would deliver 'single payer' government care.

So Trump thwarted that sorta, but is going with RyanCare that keeps costs skyrocketed for at least a few years. That mostly advances the failure theater of the left, but puts all the blame on Republicans.

Not only do costs keep spiraling upward, but doctors check on your gun cabinet, and illegals are in like Flynn (except Flynn is out). Trump won with border control and jobs, but is taking care of Ryan/McConnel first.

Stirewalt points out that whatever comes out of the House will get less conservative in the Senate, not more conservative. Rates have to come down ... take out illegals and maternity care and put the prexisting condition people in their own subsidized pool. Currently, all those freebies are funded by skyrocketing the cost on the healthy person that liked their insurance.

The real tax/penalty was the huge $5000/yr increase on the people already insured. It was not for their insurance, it was for the illegals and free loaders. Fix it now or just say no.

People keep conflating pre-existing conditions with chronic conditions. Pre-existing conditions weren't a problem as long as you maintained coverage. If you didn't you had a one year wait. Chronic conditions are the thing that kills your rates because of my wife I know. When a worked for a mid-size company and the insurance company was setting rates for the next year, they called me directly about my wife's condition. What we need is a pool for chronic conditions.

Don't act as if this were something well beyond the GOP. The Senate turds already made a junior version of this deal with the dems right after they got back control of the Senate, as regarded a slew of administration nominations (including the illegal one that Barky had slimed through on the labor board) in return for ... nothing.

We've seen this movie before - actually played out - too many times to write it off. This is not only something that the GOP would contemplate seriously, it's something that they've already done, and done at the exact time that they didn't need to do it - like after they won the Senate and a court came down with the obvious decision that Barky wasn't allowed to declare that the Senate was out of session and then just shove his maoist nominee through.

That would fall squarely on the shoulders of the Democrats and allow the GOP to shove through the next nominee without the circus of a long hearing. Whoops, sorry, I forgot you were right.

I've been saying that for a while, but our side demands Republicans say the stupid out loud.

When Democrats lie, it's usually to the general election voters and not the base.

Republicans lie to the base but keep their promises to the voters that never vote for them.

Take abortion for example, it would be so easy to stake out a real consensus pro-life position, but no, some groups want 100% purity that scares the hell out of voters.

The one where they stalled his agenda so much they forced him to go to pen and phone which allows Trump to undo them just as easily? Then, when the next one comes up, don't take their calls and block the filibuster. What do they have to lose? Democrat respect? The Dems have done this for decades, all the while screaming about how evil and monstrous their opposition is. Where did the Democrats leave the slightest room for leverage?

It only works to make a deal with someone if you've honored deals in the past and there's any level of penalty at all for breaking it. There isn't.

399 At some point I think it would be helpful to come up with a shorthand name beyond RINO to more accurately describe the many, many "Republicans" that are actually died-in-the-wool, deep cover Democrats who have learned how to say the right things in their home states/districts in order to be elected and remain part of the big fancy DC Fraternity of Our Betters.

On one hand, you have the northeastern variety who know the Dem side is too crowded with candidates to offer any hope of winning, so they simply declare as Republicans and mouth mildly less socialistic policies to split the vote and defeat the loony left candidate. Their inner statist remains unchanged regardless of who they caucus with.

On the other hand, you have the red state variety who know how to manipulate their way through elections as the "reasonable" candidate in a field of much better conservatives. Once elected, they're free to throw all of that aside, make conservatives miserable, and most importantly, run other peoples' lives according to their inner Dem wiring.

Both types need to be effectively tagged if we're to ever have a hope of having them removed from our lives.

If you still hang on, then you'll suddenly get 24/7 media coverage (driven by the RNC rolodex of friends) that reports breathlessly on your tax returns, email, and countless other things that accidentally got leaked to them from unknown sources.

Get past that and you'll suddenly find that you have a massive social media following for editing video clips that make you look like a lunatic, followed by interviews with lifelong neo-Nazis and KKK members expressing their full throated support.

Then, if by some remote change you actually get elected, you will arrive in DC to find that your office is a broom closet in the basement of some ghetto building, you are ineligible for a seat on any committee, your allocations for staff, etc. have been lost, and your privileges to participate in anything have been suspended pending receipt of your dues payments to the national party. In the short term, that may be a good place for charity to kick in. In the long term, getting government out of the healthcare fields will lead to dropping prices as pharmaceutical companies adjust to the fact that the government cash cow is no longer there. It is a misuse of insurance though. Insurance != healthcare and treating it as if it is drives up costs for both.

447 FWIW, I'm about this close to turning off college football since there's rarely any risk and only massive rewards for scooting out of the pocket and potentially making huge yardage without any fear of intentional grounding being called. Backed up 30 yards with nowhere to go? Oh, just throw it away somewhere. Right there in front of you is good, usually, so long as there's another player somewhere on the field ahead of you. Chances are good that you won't get a whistle.

Screw that.

Sounds great. Will never happen. That ship sailed long ago.

What seems to be the compromise is block grants to the states to allow them to manage the program themselves but with caps based on people in those states who should be Medicaid eligible, old, sick, children, etc. and it will be up to the states to police their own Medicaid expansion and make sure they aren't brining on people who aren't eligible.

President Trump was never enthusiastic about a complete ObamaCare repeal and--from what I gathered from his primary speeches--likes the idea of a Medicare expansion. His strongest idea re healthcare was/is the elimination of state boundaries insofar as competition among insurance companies is concerned. Greater competition, lower premiums.

Anyway, the President let Ryan run with this particular ball. The problem is Ryan's lack of credibility with House conservatives. There are at least 4 Senators who have said they will not support a bill that does not address protecting Medicaid expansion, Portman, Capito, Gardner and Murkowski. I would also include Collins in this list as highly likely.

Note, only 1 of them is from the northeast and they all are from states that want to keep the Medicaid expansion part of Obamacare. So forget 60 votes, who hare you going to replace those 5 votes with on a straight repeal vote? Schumer?

Based on what I've lived through, that's exactly what I expect. The Uniparty is in a ceaseless competition to screw over the public as cleverly as possible and to deny the formation of new, viable political parties.

532 And they are. Just because a few people here can't see what apparently the rest of the world sees doesn't make it false.

Jack ... what you're doing to that chicken is absolutely scandalous. But I can't help but watch.

1/6/2016 ... the House and Senate passed HR 3762. Eight pages ... not this 120+ page HR 1628 dandy they're going with now. 52 of 54 GOP Senators voted for HR 3762. 239 of 242 GOP Reps voted for HR 3762 (4 NVs).

It was a reconciliation bill ... but proponents and opponents alike agreed it effectively nuked Obamacare. Paul Ryan called it repeal. Still does on www.speaker.gov.

Sandy Levin (D) said HR 3762 "guts ObamaCare". John Lewis (D) said "It is a deliberate, systematic attempt, not just to repeal, but to destroy Obamacare".

Mark Sanford (R) and Jim Jordan (R) both asked why HR 3762 wasn't put back on the floor in a National Review article on 3/10/17. That article, Is There a Doctor in the House, outlines the differences in the two bills. Check it out.

Or believe JackStraw ... that a new 120+ page bill is effectively the same as an eight page bill previously passed. And believe him when he says a new 120+ page bill was needed over an eight page bill passed with overwhelming GOP support.

You. Tell. Me.

Wow. All excellent questions. We'll take it in parts...

>>>Why does government have to be involved in our health insurance in the first place? Seriously?
....

Simple. It's tax and diverts 1/3 of the economy through DC. What? You thought this was about healthcare or insurance? Nah. The only thing Obamacare (or RyanCare) accomplish is a giant cash influx into DC with a few semi-plausible sugar pills to make people thank them for a slew of massive new taxes and vast cost increases.

>>>The government doesn't get involved in my car insurance or my homeowner's.
....

The state and federal insurance regulatory agencies just emailed me to say, "Hahahaha".

>>>Why don't insurance companies just offer a product and if I want it, I can buy it? I don't understand.

You can't have nice things because Uncle Sam wants his cut. Really, it is that simple. Beside, you should be embarrassed if you have nice things. You only have nice things because you exploit people. Now pay your Fed/ State/ Local taxes, fees, surcharges, penalties, etc. or we will seize all your stuff and put you in jail you racist! You thought that was your property? You didn't build that! Your money? I don't see your name on it, now do I? US legal tender. It doesn't belong to you.

>>> I don't think we've always had health insurance. I think when I was born, it was pay the doctor what you owe him. I've seen Rev's hospital bill from when he was born. It was $23.

Exactly. Everyone keeps blaming "big hospitals" or "big pharma", etc. for rising costs. Bullcrap.

Let's take "big hospitals". Know why we have "big hospitals"? Because the federal government mandated a the creation of a monopoly through requiring "Proof of Need" certificates. You are not legally allowed to hang a shingle, treat patients, and charge them a reasonable fee.

It's really much simpler than that, however. Whatever gets subsidized will cost exponentially more. There is nothing so subsidized as healthcare. Now regulate it and it will add exponentially more cost. Nothing is so regulated as healthcare. People talk about healthcare being so much cheaper if you pay cash or- even better- pay cash in another country. Of course! You're cutting out the 10 gazillion middle men (mostly government) who are demanding their "fair share" of 1/3 of the economy!

Now, back in the day, someone couldn't pay $23 to birth a child. Fine. They had options. 1. Don't get knocked up. That's free. 2. Buy insurance that covers pregnancy and pay $3 a month before you get knocked up. (The math people will see that $3 x 9 months didn't save money. That's because insurance is nothing more than a savings account. Why? Because that is the law. Go see your state/ fed regulators for details). 3. Charity. People were too embarrassed to seek charity (too bad their sense of embarrassment didn't extend to keeping their pants on). So, to save on embarrassment of asking friends, family, and/ or their church for $23 to pop a kid out... they asked the government. The government, seeing that they could buy votes for the low, low price of $23 was more than happy to oblige.

Or they might want to feature their young bench, like Elizabeth Warren. I understand she can get pretty shrill.
Or Kamala Harris, who might demonstrate she's not as bright as billed. Or Corey Booker, featuring T-bone.

Let everybody get a good look. Meanwhile behind the scenes, days and days to work on the healthcare bill with no one to press them.

It's telling that both Parties feel the need to pretend to be more conservative than they are.
